TORN APART Axe Restoration
Axe Restoration where I restore a double bit axe who is torn apart and have broken edges with lots of dents.
ABOUT THE AXE
This a is a double bit axe from Gränsfors Bruk in Sweden. It is based on a North American working axe but are often used as a throwing axe because it rotates very well in flights. Both edges are identical, and the centre of gravity is carefully positioned. It weights around 2,3 kg.
This one was given to me by the guy at the metal dumpster a few years back. It was not that rusty back then, but I admit that the axe head has been laying outside on my working bench in the harsh Nordic weather for a few years.
Both the edges on the axe head have been mistreated very badly and got big dents. The middle of the head has literally been torn apart or cracked maybe during the very cold conditions here in Sweden. We have around -30 degrees Celsius sometimes during wintertime. Now is the time to restore this beauty of a tool back to awesome.
ABOUT THE AXE RESTORATION
I started by removing the silly stick I used as a temporary handle for the axe. After that I gave the double bit axe head a very nice high-pressure 130PSI sandblasting. I used aluminum oxide as my blasting media.
Both the edges on the axe head have been mistreated very badly so there was a lot of big dents. I choose to repair the dents by welding new material on the edges. After I grinded the excess material away the edges looked very good again.
I also welded the big crack there went all the way through the front side of the axe head. I used stick welding for this repair because the metal was much thicker there compared with the edges. After I had done all the repairs, I hardened the edges of the axe and did a quick cleaning job after the heating process.
I gave the edges a nice polish on my flip table bench polisher machine and did some cool laser engravings on the side of the head.
I had a handle that I adjusted to fit for this project and finally I gave the handle some Nordic teak oil.
I am really satisfied with this Awesome Restoration. I think that this came out perfect and the engravings really gives it that Nordic Forest touch!

The sandblasting section is always my favorite. It's so satisfying watching the rust magically disappear.
yes it really is satisfying to watch :)
I agree
I had a sand blaster for years and loved it till I had to retire used to clean rust and old paint off of a lot of things it required a 30 gallon air compressor.
@@AwesomeRestorations Why did you censor the welding flash? Is it considered inappropriate graphic material?
@@momo1461 flashing is inappropriate 😂
T-850 and i really enjoy watching you restoring things it's so satisfying to watch something broken and nearly destroyed gets restored to it's former glory
Thanks Adam - I really appreciate it :)
the T-850 has an armored endo skeleton. by specs that looks far more like the original t-800 as seen in t-2.
Any channel who covers the light on the welding spot deserves this free comment to help the video! Keep up the good work!
thanks a lot 😊
The condition of that axe makes you wonder what he was fighting with. You definitely resurrected this axe and then went one step further and made it look magnificent.
thank you so much I am glad you think so :)
Is nobody going to talk about how he always puts eye protection on the things that are very bright just brilliant
I was going to say that, it’s so nice that he does that, absolute masterclass
Thank you so much 👍
Honestly, thank you very much, never have i seen a you-tuber cover the bright arc while welding, very considerate of you, love all your videos
I would totally raid a medieval village with that, friend. 🏰 Thank you for video
Thanks - buddy 🧑🎄
thank you very much I really appreciate it :)
There is something very relaxing about watching your videos. I think it's the way you take your time, and show every detail and process of your work. Outstanding work as always!
Wow, thank you!
I like the fact that you have beer fridge in your shop. Not a little mini fridge, no no no, a big corner store type cooler. 👍👍
Cheers 🍻
the beer fridge has 2 kinds and not just some beer lol lol no no the whole fridge is full love it hahahaha..
That's more than a restoration, it's been reborn as something even greater! Lovely work with this one.
Many thanks!
You are now my favorite welder. Never seen someone put the dot there to protect our eyes from the weld. Thank you so much!!!
Yes, welding observed on LCD would kill your eyes... how stupid peple are :)
thanks a lot Chris for your comment and for watching I really appreciate it :)
wait, so can your monitor actually translate the brightness of a welding? Mildly concerned now.
@@tylermech66 no, it can't
@@MarioMartinazzi Didn't think so, but just had to be sure.

many thanks Nick I am very glad that you also like this video 😊
Oh my god I'm barely one and half minutes into the first video I've seen of you and I'm filled with indescribable joy. Not only was there no long intro but I LOVE not being blinded by the welding!!I love these kinds of videos but they all hurt my eyes from the welding.
thank you so much for watching I am glad you liked it 😊
I LOVE the humor in your videos!! Small and subtle details here and there.. Like the bear blinking etc etc..
Feeling a little low today, watched another of your amazing restorations was just what I needed as a pick me up, I love the way you tackle each project with the utmost care and attention to produce a work of art from salvaged items. 👌
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and for your kind words I really appreciate it 👍🙂

I worked for a guy like you as a burn table operator. He was a true artist, as are you. The sticker in the back window of his Ford read just weld it. You guys don't know what an obstacle is. Just opportunities. It's a pleasure to watch you work.
thank you so much for your kind words 😊
This is a pure cosmetic restoration i dont think those edges would last a couple of solid strikes not to mention that crack but aestethically it looks very nice
I know nothing about this and was wondering if you can fill me in on why you think it won't last,
@@gregsoad5031 he didn't temper the edge. After clenching in water it's going to be incredibly brittle. You have to heat it about 450° f depending on the steel to take some of the stress out and make it more durable
@@OdegardOnline thank you! 🙏🏻
@@gregsoad5031 also mig wire isnt good at hardening. As the steel used for the head is much much harder, so even with proper hardening/tempering the edges that were welded wiill still be considerable soft. Would have been better off just grinding off the chipped edges and letting it sit in evap-o-rust for a few days to find out where the hardening line was and how much he has to work with.
@@DuriensBane interesting, how can I learn about all this?

First time seeing your videos, and the editing, restoration, blurred welding, satisfying sandblasting, and everything else makes me wonder why I never found your channel sooner!
Welcome aboard! Glad you liked it 😊
Im glad he’s protecting us from that UV light. We all know how phones replicate both visible and invisible portions of the light spectrum.
I've been chopping wood with two Gransfor Bruk axes for decades. Very nice to see this one put back into service.

That was brilliant! And yes I did pick the bear but I wasn't expecting the design to come out that good. You really do a great job on your projects and the videos themselves. Well done!

I love axes, especially double-headed ones. They remind me of vikings! Also I thought it was cool how you put a gray spot over the bright sparks to block them!
I did choose the bear actually 😀
Thanks a lot 👍
As far as I know only Americans use double headed axes. My family has for generations worked in the Swedish forests around Uppland cutting wood and making charcoal for the ore industry back in the days and I have never heard of anyone using one for real. I agree they look cool but as a tool they are worse than a singel edged one.
Your art is amazing!!! I really enjoy watching your restorations thank you for putting out great content 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you so much 😀
yes I did sandblasting is king :)
Awesome work my friend. And yes picked bear like you 👍🏽 That hammer of Thor was pretty cool too
thanks so much glad you picked the bear :)
Man the initial weld on the edge was what blew me away. I don't know how to weld, but I love watching it. And then fixing the middle of it blew me away. And then the bear ! Is there anything you can't do?? Keep up the great work, brother. This is next to none.
thank you so much for your comment I really appreciate it 😊
I really appreciated the Terminator 2 reference when you were fire blasting the axe head. Made me lol

You are truly an artist
I chose the bear like you 😊. You are doing an excellent job. I can sincerely say that you are amazing. Your videos are relaxing.
I'm curious: is the soldering/filling as strong as the forged material? or are those weak points?
Good question. No the repair on the edges are absolutely weaker. But this one is a show axe going up on the wall. So it does not matter with this axe 🪓 thanks for watching 👍👍
@@AwesomeRestorationsif it was going to be used, how would you make it stronger?
Thanks a lot for watching 😉👍
I love all old axe especially in the province of mine its so many uses iluv the way u restore highly much appreciated
Greetings from Maine, USA! I had picked the OWL! Thank you for sharing!

thank you so much for your comment and support I really appreciate it ❤
Bummer! I guess I missed this one. Always a good job.
better late thank never. Thanks so much I am glad you liked this as well 😊
Did anyone else think the damage was staged? The colors on the rust looked like spray paint. When he sandblasted that off, it looked like a brand new axe with some chips in the blade. I'm not denying that it's an entertaining video, or that he does quality work. I'm just saying the damage was done on purpose.
It looks like real oxidation to me. After it's removed, the pitting in the exposed metal looks corrosion-induced.
this is for decoration only now
Professional top workmanship, relaxing enjoyable to watch, and the editing and occasional special effects and sound effects are spot on. That goes for all your work.. thankyou
thank you so much Anthony
I always rate your videos because you are one of the people who cares about putting protection on the screen when soldering

The restoration job looks great, but I'd be interested in seeing how well those edges hold up. I would think any solder there would break away after some use.
thank you so much, I am not going to use the axe for anything else that decoration now
@@AwesomeRestorations Actually there are tool steel filler roods for tig that could be use to repair edges and have them hardened and stress ready. Maybe for the next project? 😊
@@AwesomeRestorations maybe you should add this into the description, or pin another comment up top. otherwise you will continue to get guys like me saying "that edge weld is shit.
