He's still in EXO, he's the only Chinese member left in the group. After 3 out of 4 EXO's Chinese members sued SM Entertainment and left the group, EXO gave up on the Chinese/Korean subunits and became one EXO. However, he is not currently active in EXO, instead he's doing an amazingly successful solo career in China. That's because Lay is the Ambassador of Youth in China (he was chosen for that because of his influence, achievements and popularity in the country), so he's kinda connected to the government, and when the China-South Korea relationship became politically not so good some time ago (China even banned Korean artists from performing in their country for a while), Lay was stuck between his Korean group and his responsibilities as the Chinese ambassador. Since 2017 till now Lay is focusing on being "Chinese singer" rather than "kpop idol", but he didn't left the group. He's still in contact with all the EXO members. They meet each other from time to time, post pictures with each other, and when the oldest member of EXO was going to the military, Lay surprised him with a call. Also Lay tells everybody that he is an EXO member every chance he gets. And he was in "Tempo" MV for like 2 seconds, so MAYBE he will return soon. I'm praying for that since the release of the "Tempo" MV, because this was his first official appearance in EXO since 2017, it got me hope. PS.: Sorry for a long comment, but I wanted to explain why he has problems with being active with his group, while other Chinese idols are not affected by the political situation between those two countries.
Even now, Korean singers and actors are banned from entering China. Korean singers and Korean are not allowed on TV shows. Recently, Lisa appeared on a Chinese TV show but failed to mention Black Pink. Only Japanese members of IZ*ONE were allowed to appear on the same TV program. The Korean members of IZ*ONE can only talk in Japanese on KZhead videos. Koreans cannot speak Korean in Chinese media. However, very few exceptions exist and therefore become incomplete prohibitions. Chinese activities are not prohibited in Korea. Many Chinese singers are active in K-pop groups without any restrictions.

Did NOT expect you to react to Lay but this is a pleasant surprise. Lay is still part of EXO, the only Chinese member remaining. He produces his own music and is quite active and popular in China. “Lian” means lotus in Chinese, “白莲花” or white lotus signifies purity in Chinese culture as these white flowers (associated with innocence) bloom in muddy water (harsh surrounding). However, it is now widely used to describe pretentious people who act innocent. Lay’s antis call him white lotus because his image is innocent and kind but they refuse to believe it and call him out for being fake. The pronunciation of Lian is similar to Lit which Lay used as a word play and produced a song using the name that his antis gave. This is totally a King’s behaviour! Lay is defs one of the most hardworking and genuine person in the music industry.
Lay wrote and composed this song and he even did the choreography himself! He is a singer-songwriter and he often does everything himeself! He has a great passion about music! and yes Lay is still an EXO member :) He is only on hiatus due to political problems between Korea and China but he is still under SM and still promotes as EXO Lay :)

Lay is still an EXO member. Back in 2017, Korea and China had political issues known as THAAD: basically China was not happy about Washington’s agreement with Seoul to build a missile shield system, known as THAAD, in South Korea to protect the close US ally from North Korean attacks. Because of this it caused issues among the Korean-Chinese Idols who couldn't participate with their groups. Some can but some can't. In Lay's situation, he's China's ambassador and incredibly popular in China so if he went and promoted with EXO it would be like going against his country which he can't do. So, since 2017 Lay has no choice but to follow with his solo work in China, which is not a bad thing because like I said he's so popular in China. He still somewhat participates with EXO when he can like he was in the Don't mess up my tempo MV. He is still super close with all the EXO members and he never wants to leave the band. EXO always talk about missing Lay and hope that he'll be back soon

What I know about this song's meaning is, Yes, " Lit" (in English) has the same pronunciation of "Lotus flower" in Chinese. The thing is, haters call Lay as "White Lotus", which means a person who pretends to be innocent or victim, looks pure but it's not. And in this case, the Lotus flower is Lay. One meaning that I know that showed in the video is, you see Lay and the Lotus flower in the black water but they're still clean and white, that means Lay is ACTUALLY innocent. That's all I know, but maybe something might be wrong... (feel free to correct me) Only thing I know for sure is that Lay used that "lovely" name that haters gave to him to make an MASTERPIECE called "LIT", and that's what I call KING (Sorry if my English is bad)

squishypenguin your explanation is totally right. In the beginning scene, the white lotus was shown to rise from the black liquid. It’s also a metaphor for a Chinese saying for how Lotuses grow up in mud ponds but they are very pure, just like how a person’s surroundings doesn’t effect them.
This is definitely all spot on! But there’s also another layer to this MV that not as many people catch onto, which is just because of lack of knowledge of ancient Chinese history. The story told by LAY is a representation of the story of Xiang Yu, a Chinese rebel leader that overthrew the Qin Dynasty. One of the generals who helped in the war, Liu Bang, was given control of Western China but quickly overthrew the other generals and broke the truce between himself and Xiang Yu. Whilst under attack, Xiang Yu was cornered and chose to take his own life rather than allow others to kill him. LAY has mentioned his interest in Xiang Yu and how he admires his determination to die on the battlefield fighting. He compares this resolve to the purity of the lotus: strong and unwavering. In Lit, LAY plays the role of Xiang Yu. It’s also really interesting that another song in this album, titled Jade, is a song also connected to Xiang Yu. Except it tells the story of consort Yu, the concubine of Xiang Yu. While Xiang Yu was besieged by Liu Bang, he sang a mournful song to consort Yu, who replied with her own verses, performing a sword dance which ended with her committing suicide so as not to distract him by his love for her. The Chinese word for jade is yù, so the song is a play on words, just like how Lit is comparable to lian, the word for lotus. LAY’s songs are dripping with Chinese history and culture, something I find very personally interesting and hope you do too!

This song was 1.4 million dollars for the mv lol. I think the visual aspects live up to the price. Exos history is a tough one. I'll try my best to explain even though o doubt you'll see this. Exo started off as 12 members with six members promoting simultaneously in two subunits (Chinese (exo-m) and Korean (exo-k)). They promoted the same songs. It in different languages. Soon after their debut, the two subunits joined together. Unfortunately sm mistreated the Chinese artists so three of them filed lawsuits and left. After that, the remaining members of exo-m joined with exok and became just exo. The members at this point are xiumin, suho, lay, baekhyun, Chen, chanyeol, d.o., kai, and sehun. Lay was the only Chinese member left in exo. Currently however, lay is unable to actively promote with exo due to "political reasons" and tensions between china and s. korea. He's still a part of exo though. The last comeback that he fully participated in for the full album (title and bsides) was monster era I believe. Technically he was a part of the tempo promotions, but only in the sense that he appeared visually in the Korean mv. Lay had lines in the Chinese version of tempo. Since Lay hasn't been promoting with exo, he's started his own solo activities. He's been really successful and he has a really large following in China. Exols are still hoping that tensions between china and s. Korea will resolve and that lay will be able to promote with exo again soon. As for the song. I really like it. I can't really listen to it too often though because I feel really hyped up and energized when I listen to this. This song is on my playlist that I use for when I go on walks. The song is so powerful and it's a nice switch up from his previous release (which was also really good but had a completely different vibe)
Lit has similar pronunciation as lotus flower in Chinese, and it describes a Chinese religious belief of the duality of life and death. In lit mv, general Xiang Yu (the one in Peking opera costume. He’s a very famous war hero who fought until the last minute) is the past life and Lay in modern clothes is the present life. Dragon represents general’s spirit and soul, and the lotus flower and witch with the dragon eye tattoo help pass along the spirit. Another meaning of Lotus flower is the symbol of growth and purity because it grows and blossoms out of mud. Some people also use it to describe someone who is pure and innocent in appearance but maybe opposite inside. Lay’s antis used to call him white lotus because they don’t believe such a huge star could be so honest, humble, hard working and respectful to others. They also mock at his dream of bringing Chinese music to the world, saying that all of his hard work and effort will go in vain. This song is Lay’s response to bullies. “No one beat me down, I walk my own path, I’m the lit”.

I have a similar saying in my country that says, "a lotus flower in cow dung" which basically means that someone who who acts differently than where they're from, acting all innocent and different when they come from a shitty background. It could also mean someone who's trying to do something that is completely out of their reach. I love how i can interpret the song in a different way after knowing the lyrics, the chinese meaning is pretty similar to what we have here so i find it very cool.

The mv is based on the story of his favourite general xiang yu. The opera song you hear first few seconds is called “song of gaixia”. During the battle of gaixia the han soldiers( xiang yu army) was surrounded by the chu soldiers (enemy). The chu soldiers played victory songs to trick the han soldiers into thinking that they have lost the battle and they did , thus resulting in them running away. Xiang yu was only left with some soldiers his consort (yu) and his horse. The “song of gaixia” was composed by xiang yu for his consort when he was entrapped by the chu army. His consort later killed herself so she doesn’t get captured. Xiang yu escaped with the soldiers but chu army went after him later on he was the only one left and he killed himself so that the enemy doesn’t get the satisfaction to do so. The flower in the mv is a lotus flower, lay’s antis call him a white lotus which can someone pretending to be innocent or a victim. He used this in a good way that yes he his a lotus that grows in the mud. The dragon as lay says that he always feels that there is a dragon guiding him in life also dragons are a symbol of power . I finally understand why EXO related videos gets comparatively lesser views.. It's cuz of YT doesn't counts views if you.. Viewers replay or move back n forth in the video.. and that being a common occurrence in literally 95% of EXO content, that sure explains a lot 😅, I think only around 30% views are counted from the total per day viewers traffic..

He is my favorite music producer in china. He's good at making dark trap and exotic trap music . I don’t even need to check the credit and I heard the signature bass in the transition part, I recognized he definitely collaborated with Lay. Lay was as a judge in a music competition last year , and he met Anti-general. Lay was immediately amazed by Anti-general and his talent, that’s why this song was made. It's not water lily but it's Lotus. In China when you call someone white lotus it's a slang it's not really straight forward but it means that person act innocent kind of thing.
