The other name for this song is 莲, or Lotus. You can see a lot of lotus references and imageries in the MV. In China, there is a slang "White Lotus," referring to those that play innocent, acting nicely in front of others to get benefits, and then talk shit and stab them behind their backs. Lay's antis often refer to him as a "white lotus" because they think he's fake. There's also a Chinese metaphorical saying about Lotus being, 出淤泥而不染 (which he used in the lyric of this song), which means growing and living in the mud/silt but not being stained or dyed by it, referring to the world vs him as a person and his goal and dreams. He used what was targeted at him, turn it around, made it positive, and made a fire song. Also, the Chinese refer to themselves as 龙的传人 or “Descendents of the Dragon”, and every emperor in China was considered 真龙天子 or "The Heavenly Son of the Dragon."

Well "Shenlong" (神龙，means Holy Dragon) from Dragon Ball Z is just a typical Chinese dragon. So any Chinese dragon is like that, the dragon in this MV is a black dragon that represents Holiness and nobleness in Chinese culture, as black was considered the most noble color in the first unified Dynasty "Qin" in ancient China. That is also the time when the backstory of the MV took place. Nice reaction, fun and on point.
The MV was filmed 6 months ago at Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios in China, the world’s largest outdoor film studio. More than a hundred background actors were a part of this MV. He personally spent $1.4M for the overall production. The company that made the effects for the Lit MV is Dexter Studios. This is the first time that they have produced a music video as they usually make movies, such as the Oscar-winning "Parasite." The word 莲 "lian" (which sounds like lit in chinese) means LOTUS. The slang the haters used to say to him is 白莲花 (bai lian hua) which means someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside. But lotus is a holy and pure image in Chinese history which is not a small thing like those haters said. The bad metaphor happens these years from some ignorant and stupid people. He speak highly of it and correct the reputation for it as irony to the haters. Another thing is that there's an old metaphor about lotus: 出淤泥而不染 (which he used in the lyric of this song), which means growing and living in the mud/silt but not being stained or dyed by it, referring to the world vs him as a person and his goal and dreams. He used the 2 different sides of the word lotus. The overall MV is based off of Lay’s favorite Chinese historical figure fighting oppression. The MV is the portrayal of a Chinese General’s entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The voice in the 1st 1min of the MV is actually the voice of a Peking opera artist singing “The Song of Gaixia” which the General composed for his wife Lady Yu (potrayed in Lay’s song, Jade) who later took her own life Lay released his semi-autobiographical book “Independent 24” or "Standing firm at 24." In the book, Yixing talked about how he thinks he has 2 dragons inside him, the good & the bad. He always listens to the good one, which the dragon protecting him and helping through the difficulties. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, strength, and good luck. This could be the reference to the dragon from the mv is helping him to fight the enemies
For the double play on words here, I looked it up and the Chinese character “莲” (lián) means 'lotus'. In the MV there's many shots of a golden lotus slowly opening. The part where it sounds like he's saying "I am the lit", if you look at the subtitles it actually says "I am the 莲" or "I am the [lotus]". Lotus flowers (莲花/ lián huā) are important in Chinese culture, and they represent purity and righteousness. This is because the lotus grows into a beautiful, pure flower, all while sprouting in the mud- so it can represent silent strength in the face of adversity, purity, truth, and (the one I think Lay may be referring to) the idea that no matter what others see or think, all that matters is that YOU know that you are upright and just (I.e. in the face of slander, gossip, or rumors, you can still stand tall and proud because you know you have done nothing wrong). The meaning of lotus flowers is also prominent in Buddhism, which is important in Chinese culture as a whole. So I think he's saying that not only is he always standing tall with no fear, but that even when we worry, he still has silent strength. Just looking at the MV, it seems like a song where he's just saying he's 'Lit' (and that's not a bad thing, sometimes we just need a bop 😉), but there's also a deeper message behind it, and it not only makes it a lot more meaningful, but also shows us how much thought he put into it (as if that weren't obvious enough with the production value and his name over and over in the credits)- and how he tries to be sincere and genuine with us. He really is the sweetest ❤️
