  • I could always pick Lay out in EXO because he is so crisp and precise to watch, and I love that about him. He can do all styles of dance with finesse and excitement. He is creative to the max. I love it when Zin gives reactions, she is so great at describing the moves and pointing out things I never thought of. Thank You Zin and Micah and Lay and your "Lit" dancers.

  • The story in Lay's "Flying Apsaras" was inspired by Chinese mythology or folktales. Apsaras are spiritual immortal beings that can fly -- similar to angels -- which are based on Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Flying apsaras are most often found in hieroglyph images as part of ancient Chinese cave murals. So, a lot of the pictures you see them making in this dance are designed to look like the images of the flying apsaras from those drawings. Lay is an ambassador for China, so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music, which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles. The choreography has also been designed to highlight Chinese culture by using a lot of traditionally Chinese dance moves and styles. The choreographer that Lay worked with was Huang Xiao who is a member of his team from the dance competition show that Lay was a team captain on last year called Street Dance of China season 4, and the other dancers are all members of Huang Xiao's Hello Dance crew. Lay is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work, he does it all -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in creating the choreography and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. It is also all financed by him. He even owns his own production company called Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay. (Zhang Yixing is Lay's real name. Lay is a stage name given to him by SM Entertainment.) As you might know, Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he was originally meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin from SHINee being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China. Lay's catchphrase is "Balance," which means that when it comes to choreography and synchronization it has to have balance. If it's not balanced then it's not good. Therefore, his attention to detail when he creates music and choreography is on point. He is so highly respected within the Chinese music and dance community that he is considered an authority figure. He has even started his own Idol trainee company in China -- with SM's blessing -- called Chromosome where he plans to use his talents to influence the world entertainment industry and to pass his skills and knowledge on to the next generation. (And he's not just head of the company in name alone, he is super hands-on in everything he does.) He is regarded as an expert at so many different things because when he decides to do something he becomes hyper focused with the goal of being the best at it. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music. He literally spends 6 hours every day in the dance studio practicing, regardless of how busy his schedule is. Some of his favorite sayings are "Try hard, work harder" and "Talent is only 1% of what you need to succeed, hard work, dedication and a grateful/humble heart is what makes up the other 99%." Lay is a perfectionist and he is never satisfied unless everything exceeds his expectations, which is why he only released a short 40 second visualizer using a few clips from what was going to be the MV, and we don't have a full MV for "Flying Apsaras" yet. He wasn't happy with the final product. This is also why Lay is involved in all aspects of his music. He takes pride in the fact that all parts of his work are done by him, so he wants it to be extremely high quality because it's his reputation that's on the line if things aren't up to his standard.

  • Yes, you're right. It is a little bit of south asian influence. Apsara means angels in Hindu muythology and believe it or not, Lay has starred in an Indo-Chinese movie before. Lay will always stand out to me as one of the best artists to ever come out of the Kpop industry. The way he can sing, rap, DANCE and produce, he's one of a kind.

    @ivy_tae@ivy_tae Жыл бұрын
    • In fact, the music and dance of the Flying Apsara is derived from ancient Chinese Buddhist legends, and many of the movements and gestures in the choreography come from the images of the murals in the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang, located on the Silk Road (the ancient route of Chinese commerce to foreign countries) in western part of China. To this day, there is still a traditional dance in China that draws on these images and movements, and even the costumes mimic the images on the murals. Lay combines this traditional Chinese dance with modern hip hop dance , and incorporates traditional instruments from western part of China into modern hip hop music, which is very innovative and attention-grabbing.

    • Ofc. If there's group activities, they'll try to include him. His relationship with SM is actually doing really great now. The problem is not him leaving SM. The problem is him being the biggest star in China. Makes it very hard for him to join the rest due politics & tension.

  • I like that he respectfully displayed movements from another culture without making their movements a caricature of that region's traditional dance. A lot of the movements are derived from Indian Classical Dance. The word apsaras itself is a reference to Hinduism.

  • Thanks for pointing out the fact that he stays pretty much in the center. I just noticed because of your comment. I think it has to do with symmetry. I have a feeling that Lay and the choreographers he works with like symmetry and balance. Reflecting further on it, it has a lot to do with Asian culture. The pictures also reflect inspiration from architectural designs of the culture. Very fun.
