The odds were stacked against Ineos and Adam Yates going into today's stage with a long but gradual climb up Jebel Jais, which did not particularly suit their very small climbers Rivera, Martinez and Sosa, who would prefer steeper gradients like Hafeet to make a difference against race leader of the UAE Tour 2021, Tadej Pogacar. Ineos' plans were made even more difficult by the prevalence of many strong climbers with stage win aspirations, such as Buchmann, Zwiehoff, Higuita, Almeida, Kuss and Vingegaard, as well as Tadej Pogacar himself obviously.

UCI = ultimate champions of inconsistency.
My memory is that a UCI announcement said riders would be warned about the various positions before the rule comes into effect, to let them get used to it etc, but not enforced so I assume some either gave a stronger message than they should have or it was interpreted as a stronger warning than it was by Dowsett, mess regardless.

The Lanterne Rouge is an expression used in French to designate the last contender of a race, especially regarding the GC. Riders are pretty happy to end up as the Lanterne Rouge and there's often kind of a "race" to take that last place, especially in the Tour de France ! Cheers.
