For this family holiday we went to Dubai UAE for 2,5 weeks. I took the bike so I could train while we where there. A few days before our arrival it rained and there where a lot of floods everywhere inluding on the Al Qudra cycle track. The worlds longest dedicated cycling path in the world! The first ride was a big surprise as I could not get back home...

  • Hello Jasper! I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I am apart of the Youth Council in Dubai. And, we basically are the next generation of leaders who strive to present the government with a fresh modern perspective and approach to improving the city and country itself as a whole on an international level. I am currently based in the UK, and originally from Dubai. I am studying Urban Planning and Design, and I will be returning to Dubai to work with the government. Your highlighting of the issues in the Al Yalayis region (the area where town square is situated) was appreciated, and I will bring it up in my next meeting with the Roads and Transport Authority to ensure that measures are taken to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. You should not be in such situation where you feel it is unsafe to cross the road and having no right of way. I apologize you had to go through that. Hopefully, the next time you visit, the issue should be resolved during the next incremental phase of improvement and development(these are done quarterly throughout the year), and you will be able to see some zebra crossings. I must mention that I have been to Amsterdam and cycled there. Words cannot describe how much I adore the place and how it is incredibly people-friendly. Dubai draws significant inspiration from such places, and we will strive to improve. Cheers and hoping to seeing you again.

    • Wow this is such a cool reply man. It’s great to hear you are actually putting in the effort to improve! I think this was not the last time I came to Dubai so I hope the implementation will be realized! There are lots of cyclists in the town square area that would help with the design and needs of these road crossing so maybe get in touch with them. Thanks for your comment. 👍🏻👍🏻

Amazing, will take that into consideration and look into the social media groups that they have so we can take onboard feedback. There is always room for improvement. Have a brilliant Easter break, Jasper.

    • Such concerned comment from a future government official demonstrates how unique is Dubai. Thanks to His Highness Sheikh Al Maktoum"s vision, Dubai has risen, over the past 25 years, to become a very attractive and efficient city. Looking at your concern is (while you are still studying) extremely impressive and should be an example for many government / city officials worldwide. Laurent , an happy 🇫🇷 cyclist 🎉🚵‍♂🎉

Glad you showed the whole getting back to town part, as not seen that previously. Cycling in to fast moving traffic seems mental, but the drivers have respect over in Dubai so not an issue it seems

  • Little tip for first time users of “wet waxx”. When adding it for the first time on a clean chain. Put the chain in an ikea ziplock bag. Pour 100ml of the waxx in the bag and shake it around to work it into the chain. After that just take the chain out of the bag and let it dry.

    • Sounds like an alternative to hot waxing haha. It would be waisting a lot of wax this way so I would t recommend it actually… dripping it on the chain worked well for me. Otherwise use the hotwax if you want the best performance

  • 14:02 Sounds just like Germany: between the town I live and the next town where I work there's a main road and a quiet road. However the quiet road is missing a few hundred meters of tarmac so whatever you do you end up on the main road (or you mountainbike on a dirt track). Since all locals drive nobody seems to mind...or even notice!

Does that contain the hexagons shapes too or do I have to buy the hexagons separately if I want to apply the same care on my bikes as you on your bikes? Also why does the link under your description lead me to the german version of the site?

    @mateagoston8145@mateagoston8145 Жыл бұрын
    • Hey, the hexagon shapes are the “hotwax”. There are 2 options, hot wax and cold wax (drip wax). I’ve used only drip wax on my road bike and used hotwax on the Mtb. Both have good results, nevertheless The hotwax is a bit more work and should get a little bit better result. Either way you use, degreasing is probably the most important step. The link should bring you to the correct website according to your location. Maybe it’s a hiccup. I think you should land on the English website. Anyway the code is the same: jasper10

  • There's some great gravel and mtb up in the hills / mountains in the north east. But unfortunately unless you want 120-140km of riding just to get there and back (before you get offroad), you have to get a car. Also, you should see how bad bike paths and connecting infrastructure are in Turkey ... they're unreal.

    • @@jasperverkuijl There's a park in the city with gravel and singletrack trails. You can put together fairly long loops on it. You'd probably enjoy it with your BMX background - there are some jumps (if you send them) and bermed sections.

You are a great personality and your videos usually amuse but most group rides are full of dull elitist and that was my take away from that group you joined up with. Also being mostly flat I don't think I would enjoy riding in Dubai. You made the day seem light and enjoyable though. Keep up the good work.

  • For me Dubai is a dream that never come true. They fight against nature. They do the impossible to live here. Sand, hot temperatures, flat surfaces... Is not the place to ride a bike except for one thing. An event like Titan Desert. Maybe we can race there and win the elite category. If you ride every day the wax is the lube for the chain. Only for road bike. If you ride MTB just gone and you will need something more "oily". Greeting from Mallorca.

  • Why you complaining. You chose to be there. And you saw there were rain floods. You should have gone back the way you came instead of cutting across the highway. there are far worse traffic situations in the western world. I was on a boulevard in Pontiac, Michigan with 30 mph speed limit, and all of a sudden it turns into 55 mph highway without warning and I start seeing turnoffs from the highway. I had to take the first one. That was crazy. You probably wouldn’t have complained about that situation because its in the west. Sorry but it just seemed like a bash.

    • Theres literally two ways back, walk across the highway or cycle into oncoming traffic. It is pretty crazy, i was there in January. I would go back there but they do need to sort that out as its literally only 1k from the start of the track and the far end of town square finishes at the roundabout but theres a big metal fence around it. Ideally they could put a gate in here and that would work perfectly as no need to make anymore paths.
