  • I think that Jumbo played this stage to perfection. I remember the two previous years, they were trying to wear down Pogačar by riding a hard but steady pace almost throughout all of the mountain stages, no matter how hot the day was, or how high up in the mountains they were. And back then, Pogačar also didn't have a lot of teammates around him, but he could keep up with that steady pace. I think they finally learned from their mistakes, and they tried a completely different strategy this time around. These attacks came early, and came hard, and just kept on coming! They really wore him down, and this was the perfect stage to execute such an attack, and Jumbo really couldn't have played it better!

    • That was only 2 year ago, last year JV soon didn't have the team anymore but just hanging on and see where Vingegaard stranded. @Avianthro@Avianthro Жыл бұрын
  • Something to consider: The fact that WvA is sitting, basically waiting on the other side of the summit put Pogi in a position of threat. If He and Jonas are leading on the road, there is no worry about Jonas attacking because as long as he rides his own pace and stays close, he will close him on the decent. Whereas with WvA waiting there, he feels like he has to ride hard to prevent attacks because even a 10 second gap could turn into a minute+ if Wout is there to power Jonas down the hill. Which is a genius bit of tactics, because if Jonas DOES feel like he can crack Pogi, then Wout is there to take him to the next climb with an even bigger gap, and in that case perhaps even pace him for the first k or so, but even when Jonas DIDN'T attack it still puts Pogi under immense pressure. /edit: You actually talked about this 1 second after I paused to make this comment. :P

    • Well Pogi could have just let Roglic or Vingegard go at say 60 or 50 km from the finish line. Ride his own pace just like them. Only if they are stronger they will stay before him. I dont believe in a domestique doing anything in stages like this. On the climb its man to man. On the descent it's just going downhill fast. Only for getting food or water they are useful in these stages. It's too though. Pogi maybe would still have lost some time that way but less than now..

At the time this was viewed as brilliant tactics taking down the "unbeatable" Pogacar, which is partly true of course, but it still takes a hell of a rider to attack again and again on Telegraphe/Galibier and then completely destroy not only Pogacar but also the rest of the field on the final climb. That last 4-5 km was one of the most insane climbing performances I've ever seen after such a hard stage. Vingegaard continued to impress on Hautacam and on the ITT in 2022 and then pretty much looked unbeatable throughout the 2023 season outside of Paris-Nice and the start of the Vuelta where he had stomach issues. His only "weakness" seems to be following Pogacar in a sprint, which really isn't that much of a weakness.

Watched that Jumbo plan B movie just prior to the stage so i got quite excited about Jumbo lying down all their cards on the tarmac and getting the results in the end by complete obliteriation of the field and the gc. But a big gamble as well as u also said on ur pod. Also that smile from Roglic when he crossed the line and vingegaard pausing that interview for a hug with Wout told so much about the team. • What a wonderful stage. This is what we've been waiting for, and oh boy did we get it. My personal highlight of the stage was Jonas and Primož taking turns and attacking Tadej. Most say this was Tadej's tactical mistake but in my opinion, this just shows the respect Pogačar has for Roglič. They know each other better than anyone and Pogačar would never just let Roglič go. Despite Roglič's injuries and discomfort, he's still a force to be reckoned with and I doubt Pogačar knew the condition (and daily form) Roglič was in yesterday. For all he knew, Roglič could have had super legs yesterday and his back pain had finally subsided, so he just couldn't afford not to follow his attacks. Plus, this was the place where Roglič got his first TdF win back in 2017, attacking 34 km out. As we've seen, 2 or 3 minutes is not that much of a gap, and that could have easily been (a healthy) Roglič at the end instead of Jonas. My only hope is to see Primož make a comeback, preferably at this year's Vuelta. He's still got too much of a fight in him to simply become and settle for a status of a super domestique for JV.

  • Pog did an incredible ride today - he dealt with all the 1-2 punches, then towed Jonas up the Galibier at a pace no-one else could do, and only really struggled on the upper slopes of the Granon. I don't think there's another in the Tour who could have done that. But he said that Jonas was the best climber in the world, and he wasn't wrong - doing all that work really cost him. Thomas was a surprise - he was there for the 1-2 punches when no-one else had followed, and while he got dropped at the top of the Galibier and Granon, he rode at his pace and didn't lose too much time. I was also surprised by Yates - even though he paced sensibly across the whole day I still thought he would have been much further back. Let's hope today is just as epic.

    • @@iminc5498 no Vingegaard didn't say that he was on his absolute limit in the Galibier, what he said was the word "insecure" but what he meant was he wasn't sure if Pogi was on his limit or not that's why he didn't attack, it was at Col du Granon where he said that if he didn't try he won't know and he tried because if he didn't he wouldn't have won. On the Galibier, if you look at Jonas' face he really wasn't on the limit, he was just getting a free ride behind Pogacar, compare that to his face on the last 3km of the Granon, that's where he tried to be close to his limits or at his limit.

Therefore attacking and potentially opening a gap that would allow him to settle in a steady pace seemed like a reasonable option.

It meant that during the last climb, Pogacar wasn't only fighting them, he and whatever he had left of his team had to be careful of everyone else in the group and in turn it resulted in the pace up the climb increasing significantly. • Team Jumbo is incredible. Once again Wout shows how crazy insanely good he is and how valuable he is for the team. He made almost 3 minutes on Barguil and saved a lot of energy pacing for Jumbo. Why was catching Barguil important? Vingegaard got those additional 10" bonus for the win in the end. So professional, masterpiece by Jumbo. Btw look at Tadej at 5:50. His shorts are full of dried salt. According to an expert (former pro) in the stream I watched, that's not a good sign. Glad Tadej had a day like this, he made us believe he is human after all. I hope he can recover and make it still interesting. I honestly don't have favourites, I just enjoy the show.
