  • I love GCN. But I learned more from these when they used to compare super bikes with mid-range bikes. Reasonably priced bikes by Specialist, Trek or others would do far better in these comparisons and provide more meaningful information. Methinks the makers of $10K bikes might be afraid of this. And no one looks at a $10K bike and then says "that's too much, I'm going for the $200 bike.!" But, it was entertaining! And Ollie, you look positively sickly, gaunt and under nourished. Keep up the good work!

    @SidAuteur@SidAuteur Жыл бұрын
    • This is definitely the case. When you get above a certain price point the gains are much more marginal. It’s like difference between Tourney and 105 is much bigger than between 105 and Dura-ace. But then this is the same in all sports, the top end components are cutting edge state of the art so would have to be expensive with the research and development that go into it. Unless you race at pro level you don’t really need it though.

  • My first road bike is a Eurobike. It is crazy heavy, but it will make some good riding legs after riding it a few times. Yes, it has several pitfalls, but for a newbie with a very tight budget, it isn't bad for a new road bike. However, I wouldn't recommend getting too chummy with it for long if a person wants to get serious later. A few issues with it is the quality of the derailleur and the size of the chain ring. The derailleur will junk up after some time of serious rides. Also, the chain ring is a bit smaller than that of a typical road bike, possibly because the parts seem to be a mix from something that resemble various types of bikes. A positive aspect to the Eurobike is that the frame can stand a beating for how heavy this tank on two wheels is. I don't ride mine any longer except for when I am screwing around. Note: if a person is just learning how to use clips, this is the bike to do it with because a person new to clips will fall, dropping the bike a few times along with banging up the knees.

That was probably the finest bit of riding he has ever done (or anyone at GCN, even in their pro days for that matter). What I can't figure out is if he was able to go over 30mph for almost 50 minutes in Project 49, how come he could not achieve his Hour Record goal. Even though its an extra 10 minutes of riding, he should have been able to get closer to it than he did.

E.g., aluminum frame, claris group set etc. It seems that you really do go faster if you have a great bike compared to an amazon bike; but how much difference does it make to go from the most affordable "true" road bike (~1,000 dollars), to what many riders would consider a good road bike bike (~$3,000)

  • Let's be real here Ollie has upped his training and his overall fitness on the bike~ If you put an amateur on the bike the Pro cyclist still would have won of the cheap bike. I think we all know Ollie is like semi-pro these days! haha

    • yeah he is at 5W/kg which needs some pretty rigorous training to get to as an amateur

  • Great video!!!! We all know Ollie won… I think upgrading components on the euro bike to see how much weight can be saved would be a good video…replace everything just keep the frame

    @thomaswag80@thomaswag80 Жыл бұрын
    • Spot on target! Seat post, fork, handlebar and chainring are hi ten steel. Just replacing them for aluminum parts would shave good 3 to 5 kgs. On the other hand, the frame is heavy as hell alone and it's geometry is akward.

  • with that heritage, this eurobike is probably the most valuable eurobike ever. this on bike probably made gcn more money then amazon selling them ;) you should have made everyone singh it who has driven it. it was a fun video even if oliver is a pretty good rider and traffic lights are always a pain in the....legs.....

  • While I get that this is really just an ad for Wilier, please be conscious that the Amazon bike may be all someone can afford. And if it gets them out riding, then that’s the most important thing. It’s not all about the bike. It’s all about going for a ride.

  • This video really shows how good Ollie has got - he lost 72 seconds on the traffic light, but if he didn't stop timing, then he lost significantly more time than Joe which skewed the final results. If both stopped timing at the lights, then Joe would have to make up the difference between the time it took to get to Ollie and the time he had to wait at the lights - in other words, Ollie arguably won this challenge!

    @Judewilkinsonjfk@Judewilkinsonjfk Жыл бұрын
    • well it's pretty obvious that ollie was faster time-wise, since the waiting time at the traffic light was much shorter for joe.

  • *This video reminds me….* Many, Many, moons ago, I used to go cycling with a classmate of mine _(in the late 80s if you’re bothered)._ I always owned fairly heavy and not very aerodynamic second-hand bikes, whilst he, being more into cycling than me, always had pretty decent bikes that were light and aerodynamic. It was so frustrating when we’d go out and watch him disappear into the distance and then wait for me for what seemed like a lifetime as I slowly caught him up at the top of the next hill. So, I basically got him to swap bikes with me so that I got to ride his really good bike and he suffered riding on my shitty bike. Okay, he could still outperform me and beat me to the top of the next hill. But, the difference between our speeds was greatly reduced and he no longer had a nice relaxing wait for me to catch him up.
