Who Dares Wins - Full episode - Series 4, Episode 5 - First Broadcast Wednesday 18th May 1988

A bumper episode here - 45 mins long and packed with sketches and songs. It's like we knew the end was coming and we just needed to get all that stuff out there. We start with a 30 year retrospective of the many faces of WDW through the years (Tony's hardly aged) which leads into one of my favourite songs 'Love and Peace' by the sixties duo Karma and Gerald, who prove to be far less than they appeared to be. I loved channelling my inner Carly Simon for this one "Geranium's don't practice torture, Daffodils don't drop Nepalm". With the Seoul Olympics of 1988 about to happen that summer we have a sports network's allocation of commentary slots meeting with a very disgruntled Jimmy picking up the Synchronised Swimming (Sharon Hall will be very upset at his disaffection!) - I'm very happy with the Gymnastics! We also endear ourselves again to the air hostess community having already suggested mandatory sexual favours on Euro Air flights Cindy Reid now talks us through the complexities of the role and how to avoid the perils of the in flight magazine. Cindy proves a little difficult to shift however. Our costume department excel themselves again with some amazing Gargoyle costumes for Jimmy and Rory messing with the verger's head (I'm not sure what Liverpool FC had done in May 1988 but the audience reaction to the opening of this sketch is fantatstic - actually looking it up, they had just lost the FA Cup to Wimbledon on 14th May the Saturday prior to this episode, so that all makes sense) - I love how restricted we were language wise in 1988 especially in the film script commissioning meeting at 22:51. We could satirise and ridicule national figures but we had to say 'Bonk' and 'Willy' rather than... well you know. "We need a bonking scene where no-one has done it before" - "I know, Cliff Richard's house" got a great reaction - We get to see behind the scenes of the tense negotiations over expenses and accommodation when on jury duty and s Mrs Simpson I discover some shocking home truths about my MP husband moving from supportive spouse to bitter wife in very short time - I do worry that we may have mentally scarred the small child in this sketch. She was funny though. I love how well we managed to match the actual skaters leaving the ice in the Ice Skating sketch with me and Jimmy waiting for our scores to come in - side note - another child damaged for life in this sketch as I hold a revolver to terrified 8 year old's head - the football score gag at the end of this sketch is one of my absolute faves "Some late football results just in - Real Madrid 2, Surreal Madrid Fish" #whodareswins #vintagecomedy #the80s #whodareswins #comedysketch #80s #classiccomedy #comedy #80scomedy #comedysong #sketchcomedy
