This is part 1 of a 9 part video series on how to rebuild a Toyota 4X4 solid front axle. In this video we show the front axle tear down procedures. It applies to 1979 to 1985 Toyota 4X4 Pickups and 1984 and 1985 Toyota 4Runners. These instructions can also loosely apply to the Toyota Land Cruiser and Suzuki Samurai. If you need parts, log on to www.lowrangeoffroad.com (or call 801.805.6644) your one stop shop for Suzuki and Toyota Parts.

  • It’s about time somebody did a video that gets to the point, and doesn’t drag out a five minute video to an hour with lots of unimportant fluff! Good job guys!

  • The editing and preparation of the videos of this channel is outstanding, and help people a lot. So, it is a must to contribute. First and before tearing the axle apart, it must be checked if it rebuildable or not, e.g. large bent in the housing. Also, it must be checked for bent housing (I mean small one). The checking can be done by a water gauge. If it bent, then, during disassembly, it has to be address where is it. It is very simple inspection, however, it will tell us about the whole history of the axle and how to do the straightness of housing. By the way, a lot of housings come bent. Then, during disassembly of the kingpin bearings, the preload on them has to be assured otherwise, and especially if there is a play in them, the flange that holds the bearing race can be bent inward (pressed in due to excessive abuse) and the complete housing is a trash. It can be fixed either by pressing the flange outward or welding on a new flange. In both cases, the centering of the CV joint around the axle shaft seal is not assured. This means an oil leaking housing. All the bearing surfaces has to be inspected. Most service manual call for inception of part before, during and after disassembly for whatever can be inspected for expected wear and tear. Good luck

  • I just installed the ultimate solid axle kit on my 1983 4x4 yota and the new shims with the kit were way to thin. The thick and thin shim together were not as thick as the factory thick shim. I had to reuse the Toyota shims before anything would function properly so make sure you keep your old shims. Also for people like myself who have never done this job before it would be a great help to include a simple set of clear instructions to reference.

  • nice job on these axle videos... i wanted to mention that there are shims under the steering arm and under the bottom cap, need to keep track of what shims went where when disassembling, so that it all goes back together properly centered... toyota sells an sst factory tool for measuring how much shim thickness you'll need to use, but i couldn't get it to be fully functional with the trail gear axle housing and longs, it was only partially useful... also, be careful about using a screwdriver or pry bar for the teardown, don't want to score or dent anything, although i ended up having to buy a new set of shims anyway.

  • Mr. you're Wrong already on the Differential bolt, by this you're supposed to take the top off before doing the bottom bolt. How're you going to tell everyone that taking the bottom off in this video and than to the top bolt. I do believe you do know you if you end up taking the bottom off and if you're unable to take the top off than more then likely you're screwed, due to the fact that you cannot refill the gear fluid back in. Plus I want to add to this is the bolt with washer and cones on the locking hub. you're supposed to leave the nuts/bolts towards the end of the stud so when you used that brass hammer to hit the comes off, you want able to mess up the studs and have the washer on the stud the cones will not be able to fly off. hope this help you're mechanics and to whomever is DIY. anyhow great video though
