  • Ratting is a more humane way to dispose of a rat infestation then many other methods (poison, water traps etc.). These rats eat the food ment for the livestock, and guessing by the barns and english country side, the livestock would be any form of poultry. Rats will also "hunt" and eat the poultry. These aren't poor rats, they are a pest in these numbers. And the terriers do what they were bread for: hunt and kill small game. Ratting is not done for sports or fun, it became a necessaty with mass breeding and production of livestock. Don't steer your hate towards the ratters, steer them towards the hungry society that demands availabilty of meat and poultry 24/7. If nothing is done to prevent overpopulation in rats (and mice in Australia) we would also starve, because in overwhelming numbers they would destroy any livestock operation and would also eat any vegetable, fruit and other plantable and harvestable goods, meant for human consumption, in no time. Just look at the mice plague Australia had this year ... and next year could be worse.

    • Not to mention, a poisoned rat can end up in a predators stomach. Rats don't die right away all the time from poison, can take up to weeks and by then they have already affected mass food chains. Killed an owl bc of the poison, or killed a fox or something.

When we went up I would have to check under the house for rats, ferral cats etc. All I would say to him was 'where are they and he would literally barge past me to get in first and ferret around under the house. 😆 he wasn't a trained ratter or what ever, it was his nature. I will say this, anyone in the house could take his bone or food away from him and he wouldnt grumble or get angry. They are a unique breed of dog. Mindyou he wasnt scared of any breed of dog. The old saying fits this breed 'it's not the size of the dog in a fight, it's the size of the fight in it'. He only got angry with other dogs when they were aggressive toward his 'pack'.
