  • I just found this. Wonderful content. I am most appreciative of the experience you had with your dad. I shared many such adventures with my dad except they involved fishing. 18 month after his death those those high fives and handshakes acknowledging that we were a good team in the best and most fulsome sense are my most favorite memories. Cherish those experiences. Thanks again!

  • Loved this Dan. Stumbled on your trip west and back east over the weekend whilst thinking over buying an M20J here in the UK. Great memories for you and your dad and a great video to watch, well produced, well shot, so good to see when flying is banned here in the lockdown. Did you have any mechanical/electrical problems during the trip? Thanks for posting. Keith, York, England.

  • Rmag. Hi there. Is there anyway that I can chat with you off line??? I'm a Mooney M20K owner with an avionics issue and I was wondering if I could get some assistance from a Garmin PRO.

  • Heey Man, Idk if you are still catching up on the comment section here but i thought to give it a try anyway: Im about to buy my first own plane and the final two canidates to become my plane are a Turbo Arrow 4 and a Mooney M20J. Both Aircrafs are almost identically in terms of price, overall condition of the airframe itself, Engine Hours, Avionics etc., you name it. In Addition the Arrow has the Merlyn Automatic Wastegate Mod and an Intercooler. Although I see the advantages and disadvantages of each planes, with the Mooney in the lead Im still hasitating to make a choise. Why you ask? Well.. my major concern is the performance of the Mooney on hot days. In Germany - where I live - climate is getting warmer and warmer every Year and past Summer I took a M20J for a 1.5hrs ride to one of the North-Sea-Coast Islands. Outside Temp at MSL was something like 35°C / 95°F. Now, as I was cruising at some 5000ft with a very poor speed after a even poorer climb performance, despite having the Cowl Flap fully open and leaned to rich of Peak I encountered very high if not excessive CHT readings that wouldnt normalise until i reduced power to ca. 55% bhp and fully enriched teh mixture. After I arrived back home I told the owner about that and he was like: " Yeah thats what hot days do to the engine, its totally normal." But honestly.. I refuse to believe that. almost my entire Flight Training was during summer in simmilar conditions Temperature wise. And neither the 3 Units of normal aspireted Arrow's nor the 7 Cadet's and not even a single of the 4 Seminole's I used to fly back then showed any sign of that heat problem. So now my questions to you as an experienced Mooney owner: Have you ever encountered a CHT Temperature problem with your M20J on hot days and if yes, is it a problem common with all J Models? And well obviously: if you had to choose between a Mooney and a Turbo Arrow which one would you pick? Thank you for your advise in advance and I hope I dont bother you too much with that matter. Best regards from Germany!

    • Oliver, I can’t comment on the turbo Arrow, never flown one. I’ve flown my Mooney on hot days with outside temps you describe. I’ve never had high CHT’s and a I’ve never had to pull back to 55%, and I’ve never had speed problems with my Mooney. I think the Mooney you flew has some issues. Mooney’s are known for their efficiency. Not much out there than can fly as fast, and far on the amount of fuel burned. I will admit that on a hot day with the 200 hp engine, load it up near max gross, it’s a a bit lackluster in climb performance, but once it’s cleaned up (gear up flaps up, cowl flaps in) the plane just starts to accelerate. I would cut and paste your inquiry to the www.mooneyspace.com forums and see what other Mooney owners have to say about the unusual CHT temps.

    • Rmag thank you very much for your answer. Then it must have only been that very unit having heat issues.

    • @@RMAG Thanks for the reply. Thats an incredible setup you've got. Great avionics package. I looked at the renovation you did on that plane. You basically made a new airplane! Well done. Nice to see what can be done with the right plane. I think it would have to fit my mission and be my forever plane to invest that much. Am currently researching planes for a future purchase as the kids get out of the house. Mooney M20J keeps checking all the boxes until the lottery hits then I'll get a TBM or King Air. May call your office and see what I couldn't live without for an avionics upgrade in planes I have my eye on. Tough decisions after pricing out paint, interior, avionics, motor, and airframe.

  • Thanks you for the wonderful evening watching you and your Dad. I am so amazed at the distances you can cover with a single engine ga plane. That last long leg would be 17 hours to drive it. Did you really go from Columbia to Cape May in 4 hours and change?

    • 5 hours 22 min. There is not many airplanes out there that can fly so far, and so fast while burning so little fuel than a Mooney M20J.
