Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is an animated series that was based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series produced by Sega of America, DIC Animation City, Bohbot Entertainment and the Italian studio Reteitalia S.p.A. in association with Spanish network Telecinco. Airing during the fall of 1993, 65 episodes were produced, which was syndicated by Bohbot Entertainment in the United States. The series inspired a video game, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which features several original characters from the show. Furthermore, some elements of the series, such as Sonic's fondness for chili dogs, appeared in later video games and media of the franchise.

I remember seeing grounder and scratch on the cover of the Sonic SatAM series on Netflix and wondering "Who tf drew this? It looks nothing like the actual show". I had no idea it was for a different show.

The irony here being that the first show is probably by far the most well known one, and maybe most beloved. The thing is they were trying to do two different things, the first show is basically a Tom and Jerry esque slapstick with soft visuals while the other show is a far more serious BTAS style story with a strong narrative focus. Neither is outwardly superior to the other since they are trying to accomplish two separate things.

@@kitchean Actually, his name was always meant to be Eggman. Sega of America didn't like the name so they changed it to Robotnik for the game's American release. Eventually, Sega of Japan and Sega of America compromised and made Eggman a cruel nickname that Sonic came up with, though later Eggman just started calling himself that without any hint of disliking it.

I loved Sonic as a kid. So many fond memories from my childhood with Sonic. My mom made me give up Sonic in 6th grade. When I was a sophomore in high school, I came across Nostalgia Critic’s review of the Sonic cartoons and the nostalgia hit me and I came back to loving Sonic again. I then used Sonic as a coping mechanism because I was severely bullied in high school. Using Sonic as a coping mechanism made me forget about the pain I put up with high school and reminded me of a happier time in my life. I have to thank Doug’s review by bringing Sonic back into my life.
Don’t give up lad. And if you’re still a fan, try the games. The classic games, along with sonic adventures one and two, and sonic colors and unleashed are top tier games that really dive into Sonics character
now i don't feel so bad, i watched this version as a kid and loved it, but tried watching the other (better) version once and didn't like it for some reason, don't know why, but certainly seeing them both now i see the difference, but alas i'll always have a sickening soft spot in my heart for it

I dont know, Doug was always the type that thought: Just because something is for children, doesnt mean it has to be dumbed down. He usually praises shows like Batman for taking kids seriously and not shy away from adult topics. So saying a dumb show is fine because "its for young children" always felt a bit of a false argument.
I watched this video with commentary. Doug said that he doesn't hate the show _now,_ but he hated it as a kid so that's what he was channeling.
Let's be honest, AoStH is the definition of guilty pleasure. Except for Mr. PINGAS of course.

And in fairness, it working on mindless robots that only obey their programmed and authorized orders makes more sense than it working on sentient intelligent(?) robots who have free will.
The thing about that last episode is that the story IS continued. While there technically was a sort of reboot a few years ago, the comics, set in the same universe as the show, are still ongoing, and if anything, the stories have gotten better as they've gone on.

@@koolmckool7039 The Archie Sonic series took every character I loved in the cartoon and threw them all away, replacing them with poor caricatures that act like they came out of a low budget soap opera instead of Sonic Sat/AM - complete with impossibly complicated love triangles and unnecessary evil twins. Then it replaced _those_ with characters from the game series, which were clumsily shoehorned into the series like Jar Jar Binks into Star Wars. The comic also followed *_none_* of the cartoon's major plotlines - like _The Doomsday Project_ and _The Void,_ but had the unmitigated gall to steal some of those concepts years later and twist _those_ into unrecognizable caricatures, too. The only character that I think got a good deal out of being in the comic was Antoine Depardieu - the 'french coward' - and they didn't even get his name right. I hate the comic so much that I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I tell you that I'm literally feeling irrational shadow pains from typing it's name in the first sentence.

Fun fact. Depending on the rules of the kingdom Sally might not be Queen. She might be too young, or even not in the line of succession. It's also possible without confirmation the King is dead she can't be crowned as queen. At best she rules in absentia as regent until she: comes of age, the king is confirmed dead.
In the episode "The Void", it's confirmed that King Acorn (voiced by none other than Tim Curry!!!) is actually alive, but is trapped in a pocket dimension that Robotnik banished him to. Also, the red eyes at the end of the Doomsday Project were confirmed by writer Ben Hurst to belong to Naugus, the Void's other permanent resident.

+Zik Zak I stopped around the Countdown story arc. But it just goes to show you that with a little bit of effort, you can make a great story regardless of the mess. Though, even Archie had some blunders in their early days. One was where Sonic had to face a giant bug, and apparently had to get a pesticide and all the Chaos Emeralds as well. It was one of their earliest works, so I'm not to angry about it. But, yeah. The comics are great. In fact, I would hire them as writers for the Sonic movie that's rumoured to come out.

I will fully admit that I liked Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog when I was little, but it was immediately cast aside from my brain once Sonic SatAm came on the air and showed me true quality in kid's cartoons. I also remember the game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was based around the characters from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and I loved that game, so that was the jumping off point of me liking that cartoon.
Yea, I liked AoStH when I was a kid, too. I did enjoy SatAM, but because my local stations switch around the syndication times, it went up against a show I liked more at the time. I forget if it was Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men, or Power Rangers.

In case it hasn't been said I think I've figured out WHY Princess Sally doesn't declare jerself queen. To do so would be having to admit her father is dead. She can't bring herself to do that.
To be fair, the SATAM show was based on the Archie Comics and actually had a plot. Sonic Underground was pretty good as well. Sonic X is even watchable the first time, but Sonic Boom kind of goes back to the randomness of Adventures and is very loosely based on the game, but considering how the Sonic Boom game actually is, that's probably a good thing.

Don't listen to the other guys. If you want to know, watch it yourself. Don't listen to people who just want attention or can't keep their emotions under control and therefore feel the need to cause suffering. Watch it yourself and form your own opinions instead of relying on other's. If you do rely on third party opinions, at least have them give you a reason to by stating why it sucks or is good.

i want to contest the argument at 5:34 about it not working. Why? because i managed to fool my brother when we were little by doing exactly that - pointing in another direction regardless of the fact that he was looking right at me. before he noticed, i could relocate to a new spot, to my amazement, it worked twice.

I would like to point out that there is a difference between the two. Pointing in a direction to distract someone can work because they don't know what's there so they look to see. Telling someone "I'm over there" and pointing is different because, unless you have something that looks like you in the direction you are pointing, that person should not be fooled because there is nothing there to catch their attention.
Honestly, the joke would've worked if the robot didn't believe Sonic and attacked, but it turned out that was only an afterimage Sonic left, and actually came from that direction for a sneak attack. Following with "I gave you a fair warning!"
What you did is very different from what Sonic did, you pointed in a random direction but said nothing and so your brother thought that you were trying to get him to look at something which is why it worked, it's like when someone points in a random direction and asks "what's that ?" so they could distract the person, Sonic just pointed in a random direction and said "I am over there" which I'm sure that if was what you tried instead wouldn't have worked even if your brother was little at the time.

Fun fact on the SAT AM complete series DVD the shows creator explains that the show was canceled due to low ratings cause it would air during football games, so kids didn’t watch it regularly. But the plan for the mystery villain hinted in the final episode it was going to be robotniks old master, returned from a dimension he was banished to by robotnik himself. You would meet the master in a previous episode, where they tried to save Sally’s dad from the same dimension.

Adventures was originally supposed to air on ABC, but at the 11th hour they decided they didn't like that concept so Sat AM was ordered in its place and Adventures with syndicated, probably leaving the animators little time to produce 65 episodes, which might be why it looks so cheap. Adventures was also slated for a Season 2, but Dic chose to produce a second season of Sat AM instead.

Glad to see that you're still reuploading the old episodes back from like 5-6 years ago. It also gives people who haven't seen these episodes, a chance to see NC back in it's prime when the episodes weren't overloaded with skits.

While I don't really hate The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, I most definitely prefer the SAT AM one better.
One thing that's ironic is that both this show and SatAM were created by the same company, DiC Entertainment, who also made Sonic Underground.

In Sonic SatAM, it's explained in one of the episodes what happened to Sally's father. He's still alive, but he's stuck in the Void and unable to return to their world yet without turning to crystal and dying. The King isn't dead he just can't return yet without risking death, so it isn't technically incorrect for Sally to still be the Princess of Knothole.
And to think that the existence of _Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog_ led to the creation of Chris Chan. No wonder why Doug was so freaked out by how crazy the show is. It created chaos (no pun intended), both in and out of real life.

I mean Sonic Underground was pretty decent....they sang way to much though, but it had an actual plot and good characters (From what I remember, I haven't seen it in years)
The problem with underground was pacing. Most episodes were just pointless filler minus a less than half which actually progressed the plot and/or characters.
They didn't need a prophecy to overthrow Dr. Yolks-For-Brains, all it takes is a pull of a trigger.
I remember they had one message at the end on quicksand..that's right..quicksand.. so just in case you ever encounter quick sand in your life, you'll be prepared.
You would be surprised by how often quicksand knowledge comes in hand. I once was getting an order from Wendy's, when I left I realized they got my order wrong.
