Steve Reviews: The 90s Sonic Cartoons

With the new Sonic movie coming out I thought I'd take a nostaligic look back at the unique 90s period of Sonic cartoons. These were cartoons I grew up with as a child, but how do they fair up now when I look back on them...
Note that the audio is a bit off in this vid as there was construction work outside whilst I was recording, I tried editing much of it out, but that has affected the voice over a little, so apologies.

    • I liked it too! I had never seen Sonic SatAm so the whole "dark" aspect of the show was something completely new for me, and I still think a lot of it works incredibly well...if it hadn't been a Sonic cartoon, like as an adult it's even jarring how the designs of Sonic and his siblings just clash with nearly all side and background characters. If they had made it an original cartoon with the background character aesthetic and the music, I think it could have been a lot more popular. I also think Sonic Underground would have profited from serialization instead of being episodic. There was just so much emphasis on finding the queen and liberating the people that the whole episodic stuff got grating quickly.

  • Fun fact: Sonic's VA for one of these series , Jaleel White if I'm not mistaken, was planned to voice Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations, but it was discarded for unknown reasons, thus why Classic Sonic doesn't have a voice, although, for some reason, Tails and Dr Robotnik do have a voice, which I think it doesn't make sense in the game, but oh well, what I'm I going to do. Edit: Jaleel White is the VA for both of these. Sorry for the mistake

    • It is Jaleel White for all three shows actually! He also plays Sonia and Manic alongside Sonic in Sonic Underground. I don’t remember hearing that he would play classic in Sonic Generations but it sounds reasonable. I think the reason it might’ve fallen through is because I remember in an interview, White said he actually hated playing Sonic and that Sega completely screwed him over. I might be remembering wrong but that’s my theory on it.

  • FUN FACT: Long John Baldry (who voiced Dr. Robotnik in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog) actually saved Elton John's life once when Elton tried to commit suicide after having problems with his engagement to a woman, and as Baldry's openly gay himself, he talked Elton out of marrying her and focus on his music career. In honouring Baldry, Elton John's song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is based on that experience and that "someone" (and "Sugar Bear" in the lyrics) are references to Baldry. • Steve the reason Tails can’t really be independent from Sonic in AoStH is because he’s only a toddler here. He’s 4, independence means he dies. That’s why the episodes that show him doing his own thing he’s forced to do so via Robotnik actually succeeding in taking Sonic OOC. Forced to really step up his game and hopefully find other adults that can help him. And I think those episodes are some of the best.

    • To be honest, “Sonic SATAM” sounds like something that definitely should be remade today. It really stuck with me as a kid, like the original Star Wars trilogy. If you watch the review of “Sonic SATAM” by the “Nostalgia Critic” (Doug Walker) he figured out that the show has a subtle environmental message at its core about nature vs technology. In this case, Robotnik is portrayed as a dictator symbolising technology, while Sonic & company are portrayed as “freedom fighters” symbolising nature: therefore nature conquering technology. Many shows in the 90’s was about protecting the environment & I bet kids were more invested when it’s portrayed like an actual war. Considering the golden age of streaming & animation, on top of protecting the environment being just as relevant today as it was back then, this should be remade today. If I did this myself, the new title for it would be “Sonic and the Planet of Terra”. “Terra” is the Latin word for land, as well as a play on the word “terror” to symbolise Robotnik’s rule over the planet. It could draw inspiration from Endor, the forest moon in “Star Wars” where the Ewoks live. I’m positive it’s possible to do justice today, it’s just about finding the right creative team. What do you think Steve? Please let me know, & I could describe how I would reimagine the characters & so on for this incarnation of “Sonic the Hedgehog”.

An open world sonic game based on the world of “The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog”, would be amazing if made by Nintendo.

Of course the animation is gonna look different from the later Sonic cartoons. Also, this came out in 1993. Hand drawn television animation in general wouldn't get officially improved until 1999/2000, when digital ink and paint got bigger.

  • Sonic Underground was the cartoon that introduced me to Sonic in general, kind of a long story but here it goes I remember as a child going on vacation with my family to Gatlinburg TN and we picked up a dvd copy of The Super Mario bros super show at Redbox, also it was also my first introduction to the Mario cartoon.Anyways after the show was over, the show had some trailers, first there was the legend of Zelda cartoon trailer and then the one that fascinated me the most and that was a trailer for Sonic Underground, though it was basically the intro.Holy Smokes as a little kid, this was amazing. The intro to the show got me hooked so I just had to find a way to watch this show. So the next time when we came back to the Redbox,I finally got the first Sonic Underground dvd I ever rented called the secret of the chaos emerald. When I watched the first episode called friend or foe.I was freakin hooked to the show. And then as Netflix arrived I watched the entire series.I really enjoyed the show while watching it as a kid. Fun characters, good music,a strong narrative and a good sense of mystery. It was fun watching Sonic and his siblings trying to deafeat Robotnik and search for there mother Queen Aleena. But strangely once I got done watching the show, something bothered me.They never found there mother. This really pissed me off even as a kid, because I though the show would at least have more episodes, but over the years after figuring out why the show ended and why we never got a conclusion. It all makes sense.Though I hope they do reboot this show someday because it would be nice to get an actually finally from this show.Because without this show I wouldn’t have become a big Sonic fan like I am today. Plus I wouldn’t be able to play the games, watch the movie or even watch the other cartoons. That’s why I have a soft spot for Sonic Underground.

  • I actually liked all of these cartoons even sonic underground. Imagine all of this combined with every othe sonic continuity which would include the game-idw universe the archie comics universe the fleetway comics universe and the sonic boom universe. All of this sounds impossible for story reasons since some of the history of a certin person who worked on archie sonic comics. Well if i had a story reason for this it would include a sonic oc i created called genesis the hedgehog and he has a lot of backstory for a oc so I'll mention it after mentioning his apperence and abilities. His appearance would be a grey hedgehog with green eyes but he would hide his identity because of story reasons but his disguise would be a black metallic mask similar to zeros mask from zero escape 999 with a black cloak similar to chris Redfields coat from resident evil 8 and while he is in this disguise he calls himself mr g so its kinda like a split personality when not in his disguise he has a calm freindly personality who gets angry when someone tries to do something like try to hurt someone he cares about but when he is in his disguise he is always calm and knows everyone's every move being a bit overpowered which brings us to the abilities he has the ability to cross through the different sonic universe's which was the main topic of the comment but he can also revive people but only if the body is at least 10 meters from him he can also travel back in time as well as stop tine itself like dio brando from jojos bizzare adventure part 3 stardust crusaders. His backstory is like i said is a bit complicated and long so i will make the short edition. He is sonic's eldest brother he was Gerald robotniks assistant and was close with maria he was also gave his dna to the black arms to make shadow and when genesis combined both dnas he basically created immortality so he used it on himself to make him immortal and then g.u.n came and killed maria and genesis was in a demonic rage but maria told genesis before she died she told genesis to not kill anyone so he escapes and returns to mobius. He was also freinds with cream the rabbits father and my reason he is not in the games is that genesis is being chased by the dark brotherhood from sonic chronicles because they sense that he has incredible power so they try to hunt him down and genesis didn't want creams father to get involved so he sent him far away from mobius for his safety and after that genesis was cornered by the dark brotherhood by a cliff so he jumped off the cliff and faked his death because of immortality. Genesis wakes up in a cave and he discovered that he had powers and left his universe to get stronger rpg style though this is not the end of the backstory because when he left his universe he went to the archie universe where he gets captured by robotnik and was transported to a prison where he met a certain female character who cheated on sonic with a certain evil green hedgehog but these events took place before that anyway genius became close freinds with her but then he was sent to public execution and so he fakes his death again and left to the fleetway universe where he meets extra life sonic and redeemed him and then both of them went back to the game universe and repaired mecha sonic from sonic 3 and knuckles and redeemed him as well and as a gift for redeeming them they gave genesis a disguise and nickname to become the multiverse hero named mr g. Well what do you think whoever is reading this.

  • I don't think the SatAM show will ever come back. Even if it did, I highly doubt it would do well. For three main reasons: People's way of thinking is entirely different to how it was back then, and I feel the show would be completely different from how it was in the 90s. Secondly, because of how long it's been since it last aired, they likely wouldn't have the same writers, and it'll end up being shit anyway. Finally, and the biggest reason is that things about the Sonic universe have been more or less codified now after so long. We have an idea in our heads of what Sonic is meant to be now, so a lot of people will watch it and be like, "what the hell is this? This isn't Sonic", and relying purely on the fans of the old series isn't going to cut it in terms of views I'm afraid.

    • The main writer for SatAM, Ben Hurst, died a few years after the show's cancellation, so it was going to be different regardless. And as far the "That's not my Sonic" reaction, that's nothing new to the fandom. Despite how loudly some fans can got about things being different, they usually take it just because it's Sonic related. The only real reason we haven't gotten a revival is because Sega of Japan has a grudge against their western media side. As well as have lots of weird rules and mandates regarding Sonic's personality and image.

    • The people saying "this isn't sonic" are either new to the series, very casual fans, or *extremely* dumb... At this point, it's been long established that there is a whole multi-verse of Sonics. Shoot, even all three of the 90s cartoons are classifed as thier own distinct universes at this point... The BOOM series is its own universe. The newest netflix cartoon is all about traveling across the multiverse. With this said, I've heard that Satam and the Archie comics are the same universe multiple times now. Supposedly, these comics were a continuation of the show.

  • Interesting thing from the comics to note about Robotnik (Julian Ivo Kintobor) in SatAM is that he came from a royalty family of humans (House of Ivo) who were at war with the Mobians (furries). He defected from his faction due to unethical practice as a scientist which he was convicted for, and for involving a relative in a scientific 'mishap'. He was taken up by King Acorn under political asylum where Julian demonstrated his advanced knowledge of miltary and technology, something the Mobians were lacking, and was appointed as the minister of war for King Acorn, helping him win the war. Once it was over, King Acorn ordered Julian's assets to be disbanded which would prevent him from practicing the very unethical and war-inspired experiments that got him to flee from the human colonies, enraging him, so he plotted a military coup on King Acorn and seized Mobotropolis (capitol of Mobius) for his own. Another tidbit regarding Robotnik's robotic arm is that when Sonic was younger and trying to flee from him, he knocked Robotnik into his roboticizer which mechanically replaced his arm, and it's regarded as the very first moment that made him hate Sonic.

    • It's interesting because an idea Ben Hurst have the season 3 was that it was going to be revealed that Mobius wasn't actually a separate world but was actually a post-apocalyptic Earth and it would have been revealed that both Robotnik and Snivley were astronauts sent into space but because the 2 were in hypersleep the world's changed around that without them knowing a Nuclear war happend which lead to all the humans getting wiped out and the radiation ended up mutating the animal life into anthropomorphic animals and the animals then renamed the planet Mobius

  • There's actually another Web series called Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps just in case. I also actually enjoyed Sonic Underground especially the intro. Though I actually found and saw it in Netflix when it was in website form. I didn't play or really known much about Sonic at the time. So Sonic Underground and The Adventures Of Sonic were the only 90's cartoons I've seen. I do however with the power of the internet want to see the Saturday AM Sonic the hedgehog. Even more after your video!

I started talking about Netflix when mentioning where I saw the old 90's Sonic cartoon when I was little. Which Netflix was originally a website before becoming a big streaming platform where you could watch or rent series and movies. I hope I cleared a misunderstanding.

  • Baldry's performance is awesome and perfectly encapsulates how I imagined Robotnik would act like in the early games. He was a goofy villain obsessed with gimmicks who isn't usually that hard to beat, yet he keeps coming back with a new gimmick for each level (or episode). His minions are totally incompetent (can be killed in one hit in the games). Hell he's my profile pic, of course I loved this take on the character

  • I remember being very young and watching both of the sonic shows as they were aired at the same time. I was so confused because they were so different and didn’t understand why there were two shows. I also remember reading the comics for years. I recently sold off a bunch of my childhood toys and collectibles which included these comics. In all, I think they were somewhere around 90 to 100 comics. I always looked forward to going to Walden books once a month to get the new comic. Wish I could go back……

  • The 90s through early 2000s were pretty extreme and the only Cartoon Network show back then that is truly extreme is Code Lyoko, like XANA has truly nightmarish attacks and 1 is when he via spectre pins down a Sewer Rat with its little arms and enters through the mouth then eventually meets other rats and bites them spreading control as they become extremely hostile and due to XANA being a Multi Agent System, controls all of them independently and goes after the school, the most terrifying thing about them is a swarm of them moving in water. Oh and the next episode? Yeah XANA does this same attack on Hornets and remember what I said about the rats becoming extremely hostile and XANA controls them? Yeah that amplifies these Hornets and they go berserk and actually sting much faster than usual but the thing about XANA is he's a sadist, he isn't going to kill mindlessly if it ruins the fun for him.

  • I definitely prefer “goofball” Robotnik / Eggman in any of the cartoons. But I think my favourite of that type has been from Sonic Boom. YMMV about the series itself, and the calibre it was trying to be. But I like just the idea of Eggman being as disillusioned as he is funny and somewhat endearing.

  • I quite enjoyed the original Sonic cartoon, and in high school I was introduced to the freedom fighters series, which I was very disappointed I wasn't aware of much sooner. It took a little getting used to seeing familiar characters in a different setting, but I did really like the ideas the newer series posed, and the way they went about some of their storytelling. I'm honestly not sure which one I enjoyed more, and for completely different reasons. I can't recall which one, but one of my Pokémon was nicknamed Grinder a few years back, and Blazikens tend to be nicknamed Scratch. I actually forgot about these side characters while running a rooster rescue, then watched the original series when it became available for free to me. After having my heart stolen by those roosters, I found a whole new love for an old favorite character. Thanks for covering Sonic- it was a lot of fun nostalgia! I wonder if there's any lost media associated with Sonic, and if so, if Scribbles to Screen would cover it? I always love watching your channels back-to-back when you cover the same topics, and I quietly wish for a day that you two would be able to make a collaboration together. I think it would be AWESOME to hear you guys engage in interpreting a story, and how addition of lost media could change the interpretation of a story- which you often already do, yourself, but I'm often left wondering how your opinions would differ. I think you'd do a great intro on covering a story, while Scribbles could introduce lost media afterwards. This is, of course, just a fantasy and I have no intention of pushing such a project onto you. I have no idea how feasible it would be for you to engage in a collaboration with him, or if you two even like each other. This is just feedback in case you're looking for some inspiration.
