In 2020, Avengers was torn to shreds. Years after its support, Crystal Dynamics would be sold off and the game subsequently shut down. With all the fixes, heroes, added story content, and stripped monetization, did it ever manage to make a comeback? To celebrate our collaboration with Retro Rewind, we dive in to see how it fares.

Marvels avengers walked down the stairs so the suicide squad could fall down them.
Lol and Gotham Knights to just jump off the stairs too haha
🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing comment 😂😂😂😂😂
@@reallyhimongod 😅😅😅😅 yup
For what it’s worth, playing as each character is very fun, they play very differently from each other. It was the repetitive missions, the chaos of not knowing what’s happening on-screen when there are four players, and lackluster rewards that killed this game
It’s definitely worth playing at the very least. Idk if you’ve ever heard of a game called jump force but basically it was fighting game with anime characters from many different series. it an ok game…. But the characters that will most likely never be playable ever again it this capacity makes it worth it.
Agreed
Agreed, when I first started playing I actually enjoyed it a lot, it’s when you get to the endgame that the flaws of the game really start to show
Except the last 2: Mighty Thor and Winter Soldier. Moreso mighty thor. She is just thor with a different ultimate
Is it possible to play coop with friends or only single player is available?
Me looking at Avengers after Suicide Squad KTJL: "Perhaps I treated you too harshly"
Me this whole video
Nah both are trash
@@blackvalio4060 atleast with the avengers they all dont use guns.
@@user-zd1oc3pz8s Maybe it should have. It probably would have been better
Game had so much potential. I wish they just focused on story mode and just allowed 4 player coop and we would’ve been fine with that’s . With dlc and new villains and heroes . Make skins cheaper . And maybe a pvp mode . All they had to do .
Marvels avengers had such potential I'm actually upset it didn't work out
Needed a higher budget and a better team of coders
Agreed. Could've been on like Season 10 by now if it didn't fail
It’s good now ..
They never cared enough to make this game work and it shows, Helldivers, No Man's Sky, two pieces of proof that passionate people are behind those games, this was just junk food that Square Enix pooped out on Cystal dynamics
@@TheInfamousWolf never? Have you played this game since the first day? First week ? 🤣 it’s way better now. It’s just facts
This game’s debut bombed so hard it even scared away a fair amount of people from the (pretty good imo) Guardians of the Galaxy game
That was the real tragedy because that game was a lot of fun.
That’s the most disappointing part of this game. The collateral damage it caused to the guardians of the galaxy game
Is that one worth checking out? I’ve been really interested in it
Eidos Montreals Guardians of the Galaxy game is great deserves a sequel
@@JBThomas1026where are you thinking about playing it? I don't think the switch version is worth it. Unless it's like stupid cheap, since it's cloud game..
is it even still playable now? Man the state of modern gaming annoys the hell out of me, the fact that we even have to ask this question is stupid
Oof, tell me about it
Square enix updated the game so you could still play it just only single player
@@diegopansini3152 i miss the days when we could just put a disc in and play a darn game
Yes it is if you have it, you can't buy it anymore unless you buy the disc.
@@James-gj8rnThen do it, it's offline but it works nontheless
Its actually a great game when you just play the single player campaign without all the stupid live service stuff they tried to pushed. Its why Suicide Squad is disappointing because Marvel Avengers already did it and it failed. its why I mainly play single player games.
The biggest faliures of the past decade has been live service and yet were still getting these games.
EVEN MY YT FEED KNOWS LEGIT RN I HAVE A GAMERANX VID OF WHY EVERYONE HATES LIVE SERVICE⚰️⚰️
Because gaming company want gta online money
I soooo badly wanted Marvel Avengers to succeed because it hit every itch I wanted in a Marvel game. It didn't just have maps where it felt like a wasteland, there were maps that were in the city and maps where sure there was wastelands but there was a town nearby. You saw they wanted to make the game do better because they went back on their "no two people can be the same character" with their attempt at a multiverse story. I loved it for what it was, but we 100% deserved better.
The biggest problem was the endgame content didn't have any variety, it was still the same world missions that you did in the story missions.
@@lutherheggs451 if the game was able to last the 2024 and 2025 they would have been able to add a Wanda Doctor Strange vision and Captain Marvel, plus the kree war against the avengers 😞
We thought it couldn't get worse than this.... then SSKTJL came out.. perhaps we were too harsh on Crystal dynamics
Nope
agree. and with the avengers they all dont use guns.
@@blackvalio4060 Yup
That abbreviation broke my brain. 🫤

I gotta say I really like this new form of content. The old way kinda just felt like a quick vid on what’s relevant in the main stream at the moment, this feels much more in depth and genuine.
Does anyone else chant out “in todays video” at the some time as Matty 😂
and It's not even complete if he doesn't do that!!
I know this Game had a very rocky launch but I have to say the main story is surprisingly good. I love playing as Captain America. Throwing his shield around is a blast. Plus, Spider-Man is pretty fun in combat as well(The swinging is stiff though lol 😂).
Mainstory was good. Black Panther was good too
Actually Hawkeye and Kate do have their differences except that they both use a sword and bow, but Hawkeye is more skilled with the bow and arrows and he has very good combos with it and he is a little slower than Kate when hitting with the sword, the thing about Cosmic Cube has a post-credit scene at the end, because then you have to talk to Hank Pym and it will be revealed that Crystal Dynamics had planned to put a big Avengers Villain in the game Jane Foster disappointed me because she is a total copy of Thor except that she is better at Ranged attacks and The Winter Soldier has the abilities of Cap and Widow combined but at least they knew how to give variety to their abilities which actually turned out very well
I still go back and play it when I'm in the mood for a superhero game that isn't Spider-Man or Batman. I play as Hawkeye in the MCU Ronin outfit giving me a the closest thing I'll probably ever get to a Green Arrow game
Marvel Avengers is better than Suicide Squad at least.
ms marvel is my favorite superhero, so even though i didnt love this game i did seriously enjoy seeing an awesome kamala khan story in a big budget game!
Favorite? Never met someone with that opinion. Why do you like her so much compared to let’s say Reed Richards? Not judging btw. I know someone who drew the character for a few issues for Marvel so not a hater (MCU does not count).
Let me guess a few things. You're part of the LGBT people, the view in your favorite show and you idolize Aoc.
Proud to contribute with the question!! Crushing it Matty, love the content!!
I enjoyed the game. I never hated it I didn’t understand why. Clint Barton Hawkeye was my favorite to play!!
I think we can agree most of us thought the roster would be just as long or longer than ultimate or alliance…
I may have missed it, but I dont believe you mentioned that it's no longer being sold on digital store fronts, which makes it 100x harder to get into the game outside of physical copies.
ALL of the people who bought the game still have access to the game....Jesus Christ people need to stop pretending that if something is delisted you lose access to it, everyone who bought it can still delete and redownload it any time they want and Crystal Dynamics said in a statement that servers would remain online indefinitely for people who own it All delisting the game does is stop new sales of the game
@@lutherheggs451 literally not what he said, he said it's no longer being sold on digital stores. Calm down and read correctly. He is talking about people who don't own the game.
I’ve always stayed away from it, but hearing the content additions and positive changes, I think I’ll give it a chance.
I know most of you don’t care at all but I want to tell my story and I think this might be one of the right places to put it. When the game was first announced I was hella excited, I even pre-ordered it, I’ve always been a comic book enthusiast and geek, my favorite characters were always Spider-Man, Captain America and Hawkeye, (just from marvel ofc) long story short: I got to play the game when it was first released, (even then Spider-Man was already kinda confirmed for PlayStation players, they never set up a date but they said he was coming) and back then everyone was so into the MCU movies that I remember many of my friends hated it because they thought it would have something to do with it, now, I gotta admit that when the game first started I was having such a blast it was such a good game, in that time it was so simple because it was only the campaign and main story except for maybe one or two side missions, until I finished the campaign and then I was repeating the same missions but with no reason at all, after a month it was stressing cause then missions got harder, and everything seemed like a cycle, until then they added the Kate bishop DLC where I was honestly disappointed that I wasn’t able to play as Clint Barton but Kate was still good, something that was for real annoying me around that time was the fact that no matter how many times I’d complete a mission, glitches like the mission not showing up as complete would constantly happen (specifically with Taskmaster) but the rest was fine, then future imperfect came and I was happier, many more glitches occurred but nothing to worry about, then due to other games that I wanted to play, after completing future imperfect I deleted the game and came back many months later with the Wakanda Operation already added and it was SUCH a mess, many I completed objectives that would take me ages, a lot of side missions etc. I decided to complete the wakanda thing and leave again and when I came back Spider-Man was already there, then I found something magical that had always existed but I never did, playing with people online, it made it much more fun, i remember spending some money on Cap skins and leaving a couple months after, never came back ever, that was around November 2022 February 2023, I came back today, April 21 2024 and i just read on an instagram posrt from the game account, that they will no longer update the game or work on it, it’s officially discontinued until further notice and that makes me hella sad cause even tho it had the ULTRA Trash moments, it is still on my personal top 3 games I’ve enjoyed the most.
I put in over 1,200 hours, almost 1,300 hours into this game on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X. I absolutely *LOVED this game!!!* I also just recently learned that having the Xbox version of this game automatically granted us the Xbox PC version of the game as well. So the next time I play through the story again, I will try it out on my PC, too! Damn shame they couldn't get a strong enough cadence to get this game to be something the rest of the Gamers wanted. I had hundreds and hundreds of hours worth of fun, though!! I also went on ahead and bought the Steam version of this game. I got it juuuust in case modders got ahold of it and did something for it. That hasn't happened, unfortunately, but I would love to see that change.
What do you do for a living?
@@tokivikerness8863 I work as a Paramedic. I work three 13-hour shifts in a row, so I am off 4 days a week, every week. Leaves me with plenty of time to game.
No one actually critiqued the (9 to 10hr)story, everyone just focused on the in game. Unfair criticism
For those who are curious the game it's still working. Offline and multiplayer. New players will have to buy the disc to play. But we could all make a discord group or something to play together especially for the raids...
"Web slinging to the sky, attaching it to the wrist of jesus christ" 😅😅😅😅😅
lmao just like his ps2 game
Best thing about War for Wakanda. Christopher Judge voices Black Panther. Gives strong Kratos vibes 🤩🤩😍😍
I actually just played this game and the story expansions back in February. I got it on a sale for $15 CAD. The story was very enjoyable. The graphics are some of the best from last gen and the selection of skins was great. However, it felt very mobile-esque in terms of how the missions were structured, and they became very repititive because of that design. The game really shined in its more linear segments related to the story. The combat could have been polished a lot. Hitting enemies is satisfying, but sometimes it just becomes a bullethell and not being able to properly block becomes a problem. That games as a service idea is really hard to pull off. I'm not sure why companies haven't looked at the real successes of games as a service, such as Genshin Impact and fornite, and impletented that in their games. First of all, if you want to make a game service, make it free, have a solid foundation with a story, enough for the people to say, I really enjoyed this, I want more. Then you can focus on how to monetize it. I'm not a big fan of gatcha, but I've played Genshin almost since launch and I don't think I've spent more than $100 on it. And i have pretty much every 5-star that I like, same for Honkai Star Rail. I don't think I would mind a Marvel game with a similar design. Make it open world, constantly adding to it with a solid story, and give us a solid selection of character to get started
Great video! Thank you Mr editor and your cat is super cute! :)
The combat in Avengers was actually quite a lot of fun. Definitely much better than in most other Marvel games (outside of Insomniacs Spider-Man). And the "weird" looking faces was just because they took a more realistic approach with the visuals. You got used to it. Much more of a problem was the voice acting, which just mostly sucked. They booked Troy Baker, Nolan North and Laura Bailey just so that they can sit them on a couch next to each other when revealing the game. Baker and Bailey were ok, but Nolan North was pretty miscast as Tony. And it's not like there is no good Tony Stark out there besides Robert Downey Jr. The guy who voices him in Midnight Suns and Ultimate Alliance 3 is pretty great. Also, the guy who voices Thor, he constantly sounds like a guy who is "doing a voice". I know that is a problem with English voice acting in general, but if you want me to take the character seriously, don't make me think it's a guy who is playing a guy. On the other hand, this game's version of Ms Marvel might actually be better than the MCU version. But it all comes down to the gameplay, and I think what the game nails is the feeling of the characters. I actually DISAGREE hard on Spider-Man feeling bad. Sure, the webswinging is nowhere near as good as Insomniacs, but it works fine, and it was fun to me. And his combat feels pretty identical to Insomniac. The main problem with this game is the boring repetitive missions, levels and meaningless loot. That is the game's biggest problem. If you just want to run around as the Avengers with friends, it's not that bad. Playing alone is mostly boring outside of the story. (Speaking of endgame stuff here, the main story is fine) Also, the character roster is so dumb. They have two Hawkeye's, two Thors and the final character was a guy with a gun. Instead of using more unique characters like Dr. Strange or Wanda.
According to a leaked list, Strange and Wanda were on the list for upcoming DLC heroes, but the game lost support before they could get the chance
I have a soft spot for this game. Actually enjoyed the story. And played with a friend on release that's no longer here.
I loved this game. It has excelent combat and once you get into the endgame of fine tuning your build, its cool how it changes the playstyle of a characters kit. What this game suffered from was clear and concise gameplay loops.
Ngl this game is actually fun asl especially since im a marvel super fan
If I bought the disc version, is there still a way to download the expansions?
Yes the updates are still available. It's just not on digital storefronts for purchase
The expansions are included with the game now
And everything that was on the item shop is in your inventory
Thanks guys. Appreciated.
i bought this game for the ps5 a couple years back, still haven't unboxed it or played it but after watching this, i may give it a go
I think the issue with live service games is that they occasionally, very occasionally, do work super well. Helldivers 2 proved that recently. So all these big AAA studios keep trying over and over and over just in case, without understanding what works about the very few that do.
I still play this game regularly, I love Marvel and well... its a F****** AVENGERS GAME!!!
I kinda feel bad for this game. I really enjoyed playing it and I wish that it had been released in better circumstances. COVID really hurt it and the initial reception basically killed it because hardly anyone was playing it
Great video guys.
Honestly in 2024 this game is great in my opinion. With live support cut off, character progression sped up, and most extras/skins given for free, I no longer spend countless minutes looking at loading screens, and the gameplay experience is really fun and varied. I confess that I pick up this game way often than I did when it came out. I nearly gave it no second thought for 3 full years.
The Marvel's Avengers game was actually fun
hey matty , Btw DareDevil was part of the New Avengers in volume 2 run of the comic books
Ayyy!
Adding Daredevil, Luke Cage and Wolverine. probably would have saved the game.....
I was with the game since launch i personally enjoyed the game i understood the frustration players had but I had fun I took a break after black panther and came back when winter soldier was added and immediately went back to grinding and enjoying the game it’s really sad the game ended
I used to play this game at every given moment. Whenever I got home from work, before work… at work (jk.) no but this game was such a happy point in my life even if it did poorly. I stuck around for it all, since day one to the day the Devs said we’re done here. Thanks to this video, I’m going to redownload the game and go back to my happy place. “Seriously, you’re the best.”
Even now i never understood why people feel this games characters should look like the MCU counter parts.
Agreed. I think it was because it came out during the MCU hype. When I played it after a few years of Endgame, the characters weren’t as jarring (a part from Nolan North’s Tong Stark imo)
Yet before the game came out the same imbeciles were crying about how they were worried they would be MCU versions
I bought this on Steam last year when it went onsale for like $4 before they took it offline. Seemes interesting especially at that price, haven't played it yet
What also killed the game was having to buy all the good costumes!
The bigegst problem of this game wasnt only that stupid "game service" model but the general audiences with the "but they dont look like in the movies" stupid complaint. Not the greatest game, but still a fun experience to play with friends.
At the end,can i still beat the campaign if i get the game now?
I bought mine at Walmart when it came out and the game case came in a box with the same cover art and came with patches or pogo of the Marvel icons in the game. I believe they are still inside the box in my closet but I’ll have to check after work.

So yeah PlayStation users have to buy it on disc
When I got this game in 2020 I played one of the first Ironman missions flying through New York and I remember flying MAYBE 10 miles per hour at the fastest and I immediately closed app and uninstalled

I love this game. I played it from the start to the very end and after. If they had kept with it and didn’t just drop to a skeleton crew months after release I think we could have had a different result.
A good summation of how the live service and microtransaction garbage is the heart of the problem.

I got all the trophies and achievements for this game in Xbox and PS5. I loved this game. So sad it's gone.
The game actually went gold prior to the pandemic hitting.
Daredevil actually was a member of the Avengers in the early 2000s, so he would have made a great addition to the game.
I STILL play Marvel Ultimate Alliance on X Box 360 and it Holds up Better than Avengers 2020!
Greta review! I how you do guardians next! A significant improve my on the avengers formula
I need to know how Crystal Dynamics goes from Tomb Raider glory to Avengers shame. What happened!?
The people in charge not knowing their own timeline and not planning for the future properly and the toxic community mixed in to the unfortunate downfall 😢
Played the whole post campaign with Thor and I had a great time getting to max gear level when the game came out. Hammer throw sticking enemies to a wall while I beat enemies with fist to then call the hammer back leading into a heavy attack finisher felt great. Agree the ground characters sucked. Hulk was kinda cool tho.
This game should be free to play for playstation
I played a good bit of this and I enjoyed it for what it was. Look past all the monetized and online aspects (because half the time the online didn't work lol) and it was a fun experience. I enjoyed the story and maybe one of these days I'll finish it. I still owe it to myself to platinum Anthem lmao. I'm so close to that shiny trophy.
Having bought this game with all the dlc for 5$ before they took down all the digital editions..it had its moments. Having all the skins really helped my experience when I.could roll up to a mission with the MCU Avengers team/Skins
I’m curious to hear your thoughts on helldivers 2 I agree the live service has been a stain on gaming but helldivers makes me think “maybe IF done right live service can work” that’s a big if tho
You need to try the Guardians of the Galaxy game it’s a whole different vibe and I personally think it’s really great game to play. 👍🏼
20:41 Hell divers 2 is like the Baldurs Gate 3 of live service games, worth a mention for live service that works and is built different
As someone with over 20 days of play time in this game, I think that Kate and Jane foster and winter soldier could’ve been replaced with other more unique characters like Falcon or Captain Marvel
Its not an online only game. The game was patched to be completely playable offline with ALL content. Its quite literally a peoper singleplayer experience now.
Lol that was the shortest unboxing of the channel I think I've ever seen. It's a shame games today are so far and few between of what we had years ago versus what we're getting now.
Im glad they made everything free as someone who spent money on the game, im just glad I was able to wear black widow swim suit outfit when it was added
Had fun with friends playing the survival mode Thats all the fun i remember about this game
Daredevil is sometimes a avenger in the comics
Shane I downloaded it about a year ago and still haven't put it on my ps4 or 5 to open and play it smh... im scared lol
When the game first dropped and the roadmap showed a new character drop every month I knew the game was in big trouble. That right there showed the developers had no clue what they were doing.
So they removed it from digital play but if I have a physical copy I could still play it
Haha suicide squad is about the same treatment soon but with maybe a year into release 😂
Honestly this game should have been a 2 player coop Iron Man and Thor story game with paid DLC later on adding Black Panther, Captain America with a story expansion for them and maybe they would have figured out how to make ground only characters fun cause imo Avengers ground only characters needed more time in the oven. also if it succeeded then another DLC adding Wolverine and Hulk.
it was guilty pleasure for me. it had some bright spots but hampered down by poor mission and enemy design.
i have gone back every so often when i have that itch. while its fun you can overcome the repetitiousness of the missions. The most i can play before it killing my itch is like 2 hours
The extra missions and characters were all free. I’d much rather have that and paid skins, than pay per character and missions.
You have to pay to access the extra characters like Spider-Man and Hawkeye?
Not to access them. There was a battle pass with name plates and costumes you could buy, but the characters and missions were all included with the base game.

Hell Divers is during Live Service very well
This game may not be the greatest game out there, but when I first played it I genuinely enjoyed it especially it’s story.
I can only speak for myself especially since I seem to be one of the few who played it but I think c-12 was a great game back on ps1 and I think it would be cool if it was featured in retro rebound
Awhile back, I was hyped. Especially from the early presentation. Until.. after release. Um it was broken. Your save data could be corrupted, you could lose gear, progress, even trophies were buggy. I sadly picked up my copy on release day. I did not get far, due to said issues. I waited. Then I just gave up, I took my copy in, and returned it. I never finished the campaign. It did not seem worth it
i always enjoyed this game it always felt like a 3d vs of tmnt side scrollers or like those old snes avengers games
