The most out of pocket Star Wars game goes to Phantom Menace. Did I expect this? No. Did I love it? Uh...

  • You can get past the gungans without killing them by force pushing them out the way. When I played for the first time as a kid I didn’t realise though I just murdered everybody. I got this game for my 8th birthday and it holds a special place in my heart.

  • I never played The Phantom Menace tie-in, but I did play Jedi Power Battles, which was essentially a second attempt at a video game adaptation of the film, and it was widely considered to be the superior one. It was challenging -- occasionally maddening -- and addictive. It had some of the best lightsaber combat ever outside of the Jedi Academy series, and was arguably a spiritual predecessor to the Revenge of the Sith PS2/XBOX tie-in as far as combos are concerned.

    @90sNihilist@90sNihilist25 күн бұрын
    • It was a brilliant game at the time. Co-op with my little brother was great until he'd accidentally jump off an edge and die...and we had shared lives 😅

      @JoshTT2@JoshTT224 күн бұрын
    • @@JoshTT2 That brings a smile to my face and echo of old nerves. Unfortunately, I only had the opportunity to play co-op once, but I do remember the shared lives, which amplified the anxiety every time one of us had to jump onto a tiny platform over a black abyss or a ledge. I remember being physically and mentally tired after jumping sections. 😆

    • That was a mainstay of my childhood. Not sure I agree on the lightsaber combat...every time I go back it feels like I'm playing with a baseball bat until you get to the actual battles and the block button becomes next to impossible to use because there's a cool down metre.

I remember when I was like 9 or 10 had a bunch of friends over for my birthday and we were taking turns playing co-op for hours trying to beat the first level then after we finally beat it, nobody could beat the second level.

I know the critiques at the time didn't like it at all, but this is my very first Star War game that I've got to play as a kid and man my 10 years old brain at the time love this thing to death. I have so many memories of this game, the platform thing where you not only can fall into water but also can get eaten by those giant fishes scared me to death. • Just played this through for the first time on my Steam Deck last week. I also had to Google how to block and eventually I also discovered that you dont have to time your deflections, you can just hold down the attack/block button (square on PS1) and it'll automatically block for you. Of course, like you said areas with several enemies firing at you make it impossible to block all blaster bolts. While it makes sense, it got very frustrating.

I did actually beat the game without any cheats, but I cheesed the hell out of the Darth Maul fight. Just shot rocket launchers and blasters at him from behind the laser doors where he wouldn’t approach until he died LOL But I’m shocked you didn’t mention the Tatooine Qui-Gon levels! Those were my favorite with all of the dialogue choices and different paths of and side quests you could do. Or you know attempt to kill everyone and get run down by pig guards

  • I still remember the ultra-hype for the then-upcoming Episode 1... Though the only games related to it I bothered with was Episode 1 Racer and the Rogue Squadron: Battle for Naboo games... including the super-secret cheat to play as a Naboo starfighter in the original Rogue Squadron game which laid hidden and unknown until Episode 1 was out. Can't pull that kind of surprise off anymore nowadays without dataminers discovering and spoiling it to everybody.

  • I played this game as a child growing up.. And tatooine.. I am so surprised you didn't show off any of Tatooine. I got addicted to tatooine. The amount of things you can do and people you can talk to is just ridiculous. Exploring the towns there was amazing for my child brain. It was the closest thing to a GTA for child me. You could do so many things and just kill everything if you wanted and the world reacted to your misdeeds. Well, you could try, until thermal detonators were thrown.. To this day: It still frustrates me Thermal Detonators are not as large of an explosion as they are in this game. They were horrifying here!

  • I wanted to let you know that the PC version has very different "cheat" codes, some which are good fun.The 2 most pertinent ones would be: -Changing the camera perspective to a close 3rd person / over the shoulder -Changing your character on any mission with whatever weapons/items/ammo/health they've acquired kept (Obi wan with Panaka's ricocheting blaster 😈)

  • You don't need cheats to beat the game, but you have to beat it in very specific ways. (at least on the PC version.) There's a few big bosses, the monster in Jabba's place will get stuck when you stand near the slop corner. The monster in the tattoonie back yard will get stuck when you lead it all the way to the tight alley gate. there's 2 health packs when fighting maul then you MUST pick up, fight him with the saber and he will move around, that's when you get the health packs. Some people have also managed to force push him into the pit. force push gungans too to get pass them. you can kill 0-% of mos espa and get all the items you need... but if anyone sees you do it, padme and anakin will call you a murderer lol.

  • The game was made before the movie, and the developers only got small clips and ideas of what to follow. This is why sometimes it seems so bonkers. The parts and cutscenes that are closest to the movie were last minute inclusions after learning about the film in full. The camera angle was included because they were already working on a full 3d and fps Star Wars game. TPM team was told they can't do those perspectives. They were also told they can't do the podrace because Racer was being developed. You can go through this game without too much senseless killing if you use force push. I am suprised you didn't cover the Mos Espa level, arguably the best one in the game. This title is a childhood gem for me and not only my favorite Star Wars game but one of my favorite games of all time. I hope you come back to this in a later review episode. Maybe the PC version as it is graphically superior.

One thing I think stands out, in retrospect, is that I found there were a lot of aspects that I believe Bioware/Obsidian might have taken inspiration from (and built upon) when they made the KOTOR series (levels like Gungan City, Tatooine, and Coruscant, as well as some aspects of the dialogue system).
