The successor to the PSP has become quite the cult classic. As one of my favorite handhelds ever, I've been a massive advocate of the device since its release. However, time has done its thing and PlayStation has ported many exclusives from the Vita to consoles. Is the library still worth it? What exclusives remain? Which version do you buy? How much does is go for? Does PSN even still work? What classics for PSP and PS1 are available? The questions are plentiful, so let's take a look at the little handheld that could!

I play daily on either my PS5 or my gaming PC but every night when I lay down I grab the Vita and play for about an hour before going to sleep. Such an underrated handheld.
same here, i finally softmodded mine after hearing about how easy it was and OMG, i can play every vita game i've ever wanted too, but i'm spoiling myself on all the missed PSP JRPG's i've missed out on! and even better, playing all the recently fan translated games on PSONE and PSP from Japan thanks to cdromance, who always updates the newest translated games daily lol, its getting so much game time. also catching up on ps1 rpg's like xenogears and the like, seriously best handheld
@@Dominicn123 you can also get mgba for the vita and play gba games. Also you can convert every ps1 game with psx2psp and run any ps1 game under the Adrenaline psp emulator not just ones that were sold i put diablo one for the ps1 on my vita
Is it possible to do this with a laptop and a pstv?
Shoot, I do the same thing. For about 10 years now
I recently jailbroke mine after not touching it for years. Haven’t stopped playing it since. Ever since I became a dad last year. It’s hard to find time to sit down on the couch and play PS5. Or retreat to my man cave and play PC. Psvita is great to pick up and go. Usually sits in sleep mode around the house and battery barley drains.
I was going to say something like this myself!
The standby time on PSVITA is insanely good.
The standby time on PSVITA is insanely good.
I love my Vita as well but I also have a recommendation if you have a large Steam library and you want portable gaming, absolutely get yourself a Steam Deck or any handheld PC. There are a lot of Steam games what aren't on the Vita but of course PS Vita exclusives or games what released only on PlayStation PS Vita + PS3 or PS4 are best to be played on the Vita! Make no mistake this is nothing against the Vita I still love my Vita. I usually jump between multiple systems, PS Vita, DS, 3DS, PC, Steam Deck, Wii, PS3, PS2, PS1...
@@Official_RetroMania yes!!! I’ve been wanting one so bad. Paid it no attention at first but now with my situation. Been highly thinking of it. Just been spending money left and right past couple months. With my son’s birthday, holidays, his baptism. Got a vacation with the wife next month. I plan on buying it sometime after once I stabilize myself from the money pit. Even been looking into the Odin 2 for emulation. Really been enjoying playing older games lately.
The Vita truly was underappreciated! Specially for a person like me who loves Japanese games!
For me it's an rpg machine!
You can delete all previous player’s trophy data and start anew with your own progress by inserting the cartridge, tapping and holding the game icon and selecting delete/uninstall. Remove the game cartridge and then put it back in again, and everything will start fresh, like it’s new. I figured this out a while back but clicking and tapping around, but I guess it might still not be common knowledge. Hope this helps.
Exactly! Hopefully retro sees his comment and he'll give it a try
I got one 6 months ago or so. I only have 2 games. God of War collection and Uncharted Golden Abyss. I need more games, I love this thing.
If it wasn't for the Vita, I would have never experienced one of my favorite stories about growth set in one of my favorite worlds. The Muv Luv Trilogy is absolutely phenomenal.
Love the vita for the emulation
my favorite videogame youtuber talking about my favorite handheld ever, now this i gotta see. thanks matty :)
I take my Vita to work with me nearly every day. It's far more pocketable than many other modern handhelds, and many of the systems features have aged very well so far. Great battery life as well.
Same, it's practically my lunch break pal
If you're not hacking your Vita for emulation and Homebrew, what are you even doing?!
Protecting the one Vita I have from bricking in case I make an idiotic mistake.
@@ElvisbackpackIt’s not gonna brick, believe me the Vita is so absurdly easy to get CFW on. Literally dummy proof.
I would be terrified Sony would find out and ban my account and all my trophy progress would be lost
@@Elvisbackpack ooooh brickinggg. Im so scareddd
Seriously, hacking it is worth it just to get around Sony's outrageously expensive memory cards
I still play mine regularly. Sonic Racing Transformed and Chinatown Wars recently.
The ONLY reasons to own a Vita in 2024 is SD2Vita, PKGj, Adrenaline, Homebrew and lower end emulation. Way too expensive to collect physically games now and some games are impossible to find. Hacked my Vita about 5yrs ago now and sold off my collection of around 40+ games. Probably tripled if not quadrupled what i originally paid for them
Prices for physical games have gone down a bit again. Games like Danganronpa and Trails of cold steel used to go for 120 dollar, where you can get them now for about half or even less. Probably has to do with the fact that most games are ported to other platforms in the meantime
Killzone Mercenary is my favorite game for the Vita. Sadly the online multiplayer was shut down a couple years ago which I would play all the time. You mentioned in this video that there’s still people playing so maybe it was brought back online if you played it not long ago? That would be a dream come true.
I believe the Killzone's servers were sadly shut down already. Surprisingly somehow, COD is still online
He said the same about freedom wars. He didn't actually test these games. He didn't do his homework.
1. Ratchet collection is available in NA. I have the digital version. 2. I thought Freedom Wars servers got taken offline?
I finally got around to buying a Vita OLED in March, mainly because I wanted to play Txk, which is amazing and a lot more fun than Tempest 4000, which is based on it and now on all sorts of platforms. I didn't buy a Vita when it came out because of the memory cards, but that problem has been fixed by the community, and I think it's great. I travel a lot for work and I have been bringing my Vita with me instead of my Switch or Steam Deck just because I don't have to take it out of my bag at the TSA checkpoint.
I was literally just playing on my Vita, the Vita is the GOAT!
Just bought two 2000 models from japan through eBay 😊
This video is coming about a month after I decided to buy a refurbed Vita again lol. It’s really such an amazing machine. I loved it when it came out and I’m still loving it today.
Ever since I got to borrow a PSP for the better part of two months back in 2010, I've always wanted a PlayStation portable system
Great timing! I just got an SD card adapter in today and plan to homebrew it. Had my Vita since 2016 and have been playing it pretty consistently. A lot more than my Switch. I highly recommend getting thumb stick extenders. It's night and day when playing shooters.
Great timing! My son picked one up a couple of months ago, and I've been looking to pick up some games. This video was exactly the info I needed.
Not to mention one of the most active homebrew communities out the there with amazing ports of all kinds of games like gta and such!
Man PS Vita will always be a go to handheld for me. I need to add more to my collection soon!!
To fix the trophy issue, just pop the game cartridge into the PSV then delete the application and then take cartridge out and put the card back in
It's really strange to see the year go up & up. I remember watching "Is Vita Worth In 2016?" as if it was last week 😅
Crazy I just bought a PS Vita yesterday and now here you are with this video. Can’t wait for it to get here, already getting all my roms ready.
I just bought mine not even 20 minutes ago, i'm excited myself. The pricing is so strict now though, I missed out horribly. 👤
@@booni7187 for real. Used to be able to get them so cheap. Wish I got into emulators and stuff sooner, I woulda picked up a couple when they were at their cheapest. Now even the physical games are stupid expensive.
I bought a memory card for one and then the seller in Japan was taking wayy too long to ship it so now I just have the memory card lol
With both a 3.5 mm jack and Bluetooth support, the speaker quality should be a non-factor for anyone looking at a Vita.
PlayStation needs to make a follow up to the vita, it was their last good piece of hardware
Also the oled vita has Hall effect sticks
Some of my favorite experiences on Vita have been vanilla wear games, like Odinsphere, Dragon's Crown, and Muramasa (which is stuck on PSVita and Wii). Those games looked gorgeous on the OLED
Muramasa is my favorite Vanillaware game
so glad you brought up Danganronpa, another thing to add is that you can pop 3 platinums on PSvita vs only 2 if you play the Danganronpa collection on ps4 or ps5. the first two games are considered one game for whatever reason.
The PS Vita was ahead of it's time!
Amazing video I love the Vita, I got one in 2021 and it’s been my primary system the last 3 years ! Got myself a ps tv as well
I love this channel so much man
amazing video!! i loved your coverage of the vita :))
Great video as always Matty. I really appreciate your content
Matty you're reading my mind here as someone who got the white and neon yellow as a Japan import a few months ago 😅 Getting to play dragons crown, persona, metal gear HD collection all on this beautifully small device has been a blessing
Who is Matty?
I have been watching you since the fallout 4 days. You are my favorite youtuber ever man thank you for being you.
I literally just dug my PS Vita out of storage this morning for Steins Gate! I played mine a ton from 2013 to 2018
The most underrated system ever! I love my vita and still play it regularlu
Ps vita is my favourite handheld.. I’ve got 2oled (one broke now) black slim & Japan silver slim.. I got so many years ago to stack up for the future.. back then I have payed for 3 vitas less then for 1 iPhone!
I was feeling nostalgic about the Vita and found out that mine had a dead battery 😅
Happened to me with me psp a couple years ago. Took it out of my closet only to find the battery about reayd to blow up lol. Now my psp battery cover has a slight bend to it because of that
Love my vita, got mine in 2015 from gamestop just so I could play my childhood games (the jak and daxter series) on the go. Not the best ports of those games but played the hell out of them as well as R&C, sly, uncharted, and much more. Honestly my favorite handheld other than the 3ds. Great video🙏🏼
Apologies, not trying to be that guy, but ratchet collection absolutely released in NA. I worked at gamestop when the vita released, I was a day one adopter. Also just mod your vita, it's the best handheld made better modded
I just played FF7 on vita for the first time. You can always wirelessly transfer saves to PS3 for that sudo switch experience as well
Fun fact, if you have one you can also transfer the memory card directly from your Vita to the PSTV for another proto Switch style experience.
My husband and I both picked up Vitas last year. I got the silver OLED imported from Japan and I love it, my husband picked up the metallic blue one at a convention. Haven’t put too much time into the console yet bc I simply have too many hobbies but I’ve enjoyed my experience with it so far! As a fan of Little Big Planet I really liked Tearaway. I picked up Persona 4 Golden and when I get around to playing it that will be my first Persona game 😄.
Arkham Origins Blackgate is great but I found it to be VERY difficult. I bought an OLED 3G model and used it as recently as today. Love the varity of content, VITA originals, PSP game and PS2 and PS One originals. Golden Abyss and Hot Shots Golf were always two of my favorites. Great video, thanks.
So is it true that it only lasts 3 hours?
@@armandomorales0921 Not sure which game you’re asking about… I’m still in the middle of Blackgate (I needed a break from a challenging boss fight) but I have played several play throughs of Golden Abyss and don’t remember it being a short game.
22:34 Is this how you were playing for the Dissidia video the other day? Smart, that's how I'm also playing it now! Vita really "living" up to its name in 2024!
Now, after watching....This might be the cleanest psvita in 2024 video on the internet, if yall know what i mean...
I love my Vita. I mostly got it to play the definitive (imo) editions of the first 5 Trails games, but I've since enjoyed plenty of other games on it that further justify the purchase: Gravity Rush, DQ Builders, Monkey Ball, the Sly games. Eventually I want to get around to playing other stuff on it like FFX/X-2, Ys, Dangan Ronpa, and the 999 trilogy. It's also my goto device for Retro Achievements. Wish RetroArch on it could handle PSP/DS games though. That would make it perfect.
I'm so happy you brought up Tales of Hearts R. I really loved it and just beaten it about a month ago or so
Appreciate the video, one of the most underrated consoles ever. I have to say the native and if any exclusive jrps on this console are pretty mid in general, BUT, on a jailbroken vita, you can play the first five kiseki games, with an english patch. The first three have the EVO treatment, which offers many quality of life features. Also, with the PSP bc, you can also play all the YS games up to 8. Definitely, the Vita is worth it.
The sd2vita is essential imo
I love the Vita, still slowly going for my full NA collection. I don't know if you've checked but Killzone and Freedom wars have both been taken offline.
I loved the gyro aiming on certain Vita titles like Uncharted. I used the sticks for aiming the cross hairs in the general area and then fine tuning with the gyro controls.
Just started Helldivers 1 and Patapon on the Vita. Finished P4G earlier this year. Prefer the way the OLED feels in my hands, and modded a white one, then I have an unmodded P4G limited edition slim which I really should use more.
I've had a Vita since 2016, and while I don't play handheld consoles a lot nowadays, I always come back to the Vita. Especially now that I have jailbroken mine. I've ran homebrew on it, emulators, and even an english translation patch for Phantasy Star Nova which is an excellent game by the way if you like Phantasy Star Online 2. On its own, I love the Vita, but it became one of, if not, my favorite handheld once I did the jailbreak on it.
Vita for life baby!
12:33 By the time this video was uploaded, the servers for Killzone have been shut down. RIP 😥
Every time I boot up the VITA as I did this morning, I always think I don't play on it enough. Such an underrated system.
The Vita is such a sick handheld, there's nothing else quite like it. I have a 1000 I got around in 15 or so, and another JP 1000 on ebay like in 20/21. My US one is fully cfw'd and loaded with cool shit. I love that it sort of makes my PSPs redundant with Adrenaline, though I can't use the PSP GPS or Camera with the Vita... You're right, you need a MicroSD adapter and cfw in addition to the card. I'm currently using a 128gb. The JP Vita on the other hand, different story. Bone stock. It randomly started boot looping after being left in rest mode for like 2 months. It wouldn't stop either, after the battery died & was charged again it continued. I assume it's an issue with one of the boards in the unit. I've also put cfw on my friend's Vita twice, since he restored factory settings one time. That reminds me, I'm supposed to put some .prx files on there for him. Huh, I didn't know the PSTV had restrictions on what games you could play. That seems like either a Sony or a publisher thing to be honest.
Soul Sacrifice and Freedom Wars need a return. Toukiden also great glad on ps4. Soul Sacrifice no longer online i dont think tho
The Vita is my favorite handheld. The OLED screen is gorgeous and the fact that you can play PSP and PS1 games on it means it has a massive library. I don't trust Sony to keep the PSN servers operating forever, so I pre-emptively downloaded every Vita, PSP, and PS1 game ever made for all regions and backed it up. Some of my favorite games not mentioned in the video: - Dragon's Crown - Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational - Killzone: Mercenary - Muramasa Rebirth - Soul Sacrifice - Toukiden: The Age of Demons - Y's: Memories of Celceta - Y's VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
I was always interested of having one and i think i will finally pull the trigger on buying one this year. It is also not a really expensive system too so yeah.....defintly looking forward of having one.
Im so glad to hear that the PSN store is up I def wanna cop one soon.
Better hurry. Who knows when Sony is going to close it. Xbox 360 is closing the store at the end of July.
I bought one a couple of months ago! I wished the buttons were softer in feeling as you pressed down? Still, the games are well enough to say is worth the purchase!
You can still get achievements in previously owned games. You install the game by putting in the cartridge. Then you delete the game on the Vita. You pull out the cartridge and put it in again. You install the game again. After that you can earn achievements in that game.
MK9 is on Vita, it looks worse than the Switch MK games ever did, but it has 0 dropped frames and is the most "kontent komplete" version of MK9
I bought the PS TV to play vita games I own a vita, bought it when it came out. just prefer playing on the tv. I played uncharted, supposedly not supported on the ps tv, but it worked, there were a couple spots I had to switch back to the vita to play it. Using cloud save. Not sure if that works now with psn. but.
I'd imagine Vita + PSP + PS1 over HDMI being pretty nice... as long as it's supported by PSTV!
I'm really struggling to decide whether i should just buy a Vita or buy a Nintendo Switch Lite instead, for modding
I bought the vita to play persona 4 back in high school. Such a great experience coming home after track practice and playing it. Also in Uncharted golden abyss, turn on the gyro controls. Makes aiming much better
I actually got a PS Vita slim blue earlier this year. Even though I don't play it that much, it's so aesthetically pleasing.
Unit 13 was my jam. Would always play it while I was at the laundromat lol.
I love my vita. Got so many games on it. Crazy powerful for being such a small system.
...I picked up the vita 5 years ago & never had the chance to really played it...the only reason at that time was for Persona 4 Golden but I only just completed P4G last year and just suddenly saw the potential of Vita & feel I have missed the train...😅...
Picked one up in its original box recently. In mint condition. I have missed this device.
yes, play minish cap on it via retroarch w/ gpSP core, A MUST
If you jailbreak the Vita it really is the ultimate handheld. Playing Gameboy and SNES games on that OLED screen is amazing
Too risky man
@@armandomorales0921 What's risky about it?
You can resolve the trophies issue you had, delete the game by long pressing on the bubble, then reisert the cart and install again.
One of my best friends gave me his Vita that he didn't want anymore a few years ago, and I jailbroke it and it's something I always take with me when I travel. I used to dream about being able to have a ps1 collection of rpg's that I carried with me and now I do. The Vita is an awesome little handheld machine
If I could of given you a thousand like I would, thanks for this Vita vid🙏🏾👊🏾
Love my vita so many great games that yes can be played elsewhere but feel best on there
DJMax Technika Tune is amazing on Vita is amazing, where's my DJMax game on Switch NEOWIZ?
A lot of comments about not touching the vita for ages and then breaking it open and loving it once more - totally in the same boat. Completely mismanaged by Sony, we as consumers took the reigns and the system is honestly flourishing in this 2024. Funny enough, I'm currently playing P4G XD
I absolutely adore the vita, it’s become my all time favourite handheld. And after I softmodded it and installed an SD card adapter, it has open the flood gates to a whole slew of experiences, mot notably the ability to run the vita in a virtual psp mode and play almost the entirety of the psp library
The grip on the vita is a must I agree.
Price comment confused me. You can find Vitas for less then $150 all day long plus they come from Japan so are probably in better shape. I just went to Japan recently and got a mint OLED for $72.
That FF X and Persona 4 combo 0.0
My first game that I bought for the vita was Wipeout 2048 and it blew me away.
Still have my original PS Vita from ages ago, recently got a USB charger for it.
You need to mod your Vita in this day and time. I modded mine last year and it has been a great experience. I’m also collecting as many physical games as I can in the Same time
I will have to dislike the video for the simple reason that nobody can make a video talking about VITA without at least glimpsing a bit about jailbreak.
@@GregoryAlanBaileygamereviews if it isn’t modded you’re paying for games which is fine but also paying for overpriced storage which is not fine imo
I want to make a bit of a service announcement. Regarding those Monster Hunter style clone games, there is one more I think is worth mentioning. That is Toukiden: Age of Demons. I believe it was originally a PSP game, but it was updated/rereleased on the Vita where it plays much better. However, that’s not all. Toukiden had a sort of expansion/version 1.5 that was released as a separate game instead of via updates. It’s called Toukiden Kiwami. So instead of Age of Demons, get Kiwami and you’ll have the best Toukiden experience. Likewise for Soul Sacrifice that was specifically mentioned in the video, there is a 1.5 version known as Soul Sacrifice Delta. That’s the one you want to get. If you’re a physical collector you’ll need to get the Asian English release of Delta, as North America only got the base game physically. I also want to mention Toukiden 2 (no idea if it’s as good as Kiwami, haven’t played it yet) and the God Eater series (also haven’t played) which a lot of people love as well.
For Danganronpa, I did decide to switch over and play V3 on the PS4 since it was marketed as a new Dangranronpa story I figured it was only fitting to play it somewhere new. Honestly, still an amazing time on console.
Fun fact: since Croatia (my country) transferred to the Euro, Sony shutdown our PS Vita and PS3 stores so we can't buy anything from there.
I just picked up Freedom Wars not too long ago. Muramasa is also one of my faves.
It blew me away when that game dropped physically for 15 or 20 bucks years ago
I freaking love the vita, it was my gateway to persona, sadly most of the jrpgs are being ported to switch
Same here ! I beat persona 4 golden on vita and never looked back. Loved Persona 5 too and I’m currently playing 3 reload
Heck yeah dude! Top tier series, hope ya enjoy P3R!
It's fine if more people can play the games you like on other consoles. You are not wrong to like the Vita but it's a dead console. I still love PS1 but I don't expect other people buying a PS1 to play FF7.
ikr even Tokyo Xanadu is coming soon.
@7DragonEyes7 nah its not bad at all, just makes the vita sorta irrelevant since the switch is getting them all. Trophies on the vita are still pretty nice though, as well as being able to have a screensaver.
Still my favourite handheld console of all time. Homebrewing this thing was goated.
i bought a vita a little less than a year ago and i’ve been able to beat 20 games that have been sitting in my backlog all during my breaks at work 🙏🏻 thank god for having a job i can be lazy at.
I platinumed Unit 13 a few years ago. Really enjoyed it
No mention of the Limited Run Games? They supported the Vita quite well.
If you love handhelds. YES
