UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on October 24, 2009, in Los Angeles, California.
Lyoto Machida was expected to face Quinton Jackson in his first title defense, but Jackson opted to coach the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter instead. Pride Fighting Championship's 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix winner Maurício Rua was then selected as Machida's first title challenger. The bout took place on 24 October 2009, at UFC 104, with Machida winning by unanimous decision, 48-47 from all three judges, with one stating that Machida "landed the more damaging strikes throughout the fight" and was the more "effective aggressor".
Out of the three judges, Nelson Hamilton gave Machida rounds 2, 3, and 4. Cecil Peoples and Marcos Rosales each gave Machida the first three rounds. In spite of this, a significant amount of the audience in attendance booed the decision after it was delivered, voicing their support for Rua. Writers for a number of sports websites and magazines also claimed they felt Rua had won. There were also MMA fighters in attendance who voiced support for the decision, among them were several of Machida's training partners, including Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, Junior dos Santos, José Aldo, Rafael Cavalcante, and Anderson Silva. A FightMetric analysis of the fight suggested that Rua had been more aggressive and had landed more blows to the head and legs than Machida, while CompuStrike reported that Rua landed almost twice as many strikes as Machida did. Both FightMetric and CompuStrike explicitly state on their websites that they are not intended to be used to judge MMA events, and are merely a way to track a fighter's activity.
This fight was Karate vs Muay Thai, almost literally. Great fight
I tell everyone if u are a fan of Style VS Style fights not just brawls, this is the fight I tell them abt
This was a very cool and unique UFC fight. One of the last style vs style fights
This was a textbook prime vs prime fight. Both were young, both were technical strikers, both were fresh and has not suffer brain damage. One of the best MMA fights of all time
Lol do you guys ever stop talking about brain damage? They had been fighting for years at this point.
Was a close fight but not a robbery and joe was tottaly on the Shogun's side
lol watch again, shogun proved on the second fight
Yeah 2nd one proved this first fight was a robbery lol
@@MiguelMartinez-el1le Machida did better in the 2nd fight and was winning the whole thing until he got caught.
Im watching this crying bro, we wont have these kind of fights anymore
This era of the ufc was the perfect mix of brute strength and heightened skill. Don’t get me wrong there are still slug fest today but it’s always from the same handful of fighters. In the begging it wasn’t as fluid it was more about the biggest strongest guy that can take the best punch won. Now it’s everybody wants that picture perfect moment so it’s more of a dance then a fight this era here was in between where the fighters started mastering their craft and doing amazing things but still have that brawler dog in em and made it a slug fest and a master class at the same time
Agreed
IMO the commentary was strongly biased in favor of Shogun. His leg kicks were great but he got clipped with punches on a lot of them, which got ignored by the broadcast. Not sure who I'd give the fight to but maybe a slight edge for Shogun
Absolutely agree about commentator. They were ignoring Lyoto s punches which he was executing perfectly. 100% design victory for Machida. Fight was really close. No doubt
Man Lyoto's karate is amazing. His evasiveness and counter striking is beautiful to watch.
are you blind? lol
O Lyoto eu parava pra assistir, ele sempre tinha algo surpreendente, era cirúrgico
Nice old days, true Warriors, not the coward stile used for many new stars that uses eyepoking and coward kicks on knee
I remember! Back then,Lots of people criticized Lyoto Machida for this fight. They say that it was a rubbery and Rua should win this fight. I completely disagree with that! Yes! It was a close fight but! I think Lyoto did enough to win this fight. If you guys noticed anytime when Rua was attacking , Lyoto was executing perfectly counter punch in head. Beside that it was obvious that commentator Joe Rogan was on Rua s side and he was praising Rua s name often even when Machida was scoring and he was creating image that Rua was wining the fight.I rewatched the fight with volume down and you can see clearly how Lyoto Machida was scoring perfectly.
I gotta disagree. I seen countless hits by shogun that weren't countered and some that didn't land. Very close and good fight tho. No eye pokes and bs.
Very true Joe Rogan was biased as shit in this match riding Shogun's meat.
You think Machida won because Rogan praised Shogun? What kind of goofy shit is that?
@@CaptainCorpulence No! I didn’t say that! Looks like you don’t read comments carefully! I said anytime when shogun was kicking machida s legs machida perfectly was executing head counter punches. In the end it wasn’t even split decision! It was unanimous decision for machida. Rogan was just biased to Rua which is very unprofessional .
This was a very close fight but I thought Shogun won. Shogun was better in the 4th and 5th round and he just did more damage. Both were my favorite fighters at the time and was not upset with the decision. This was one of the, if not the best style vs style fight I've watched. Fantastic fighters.
Muay Thai vs Karate Beautiful Clash of Styles, I miss when UFC bring something new in striking now everyone fight almost the Same Standing.
Yea cause everyone's becoming more well rounded. There aren't many specialists anymore
@@azeemsyed8550 I think Alex Poatan is a good Kickboxing specialist, I like seeing specialists and I love seeing Chimaev who is a Sambo specialist and Thompson Karate specialist.
I definitely don’t think it was that big of a robbery not like GSP versus Hendricks. Machida did land a lot of strikes as well. It could of gone either way. So it went to the champion
but hendricks was on the juice so gsp actually won, it was before usada started testing...hendricks shrank and lost lots after that...
But please say that you’re glad Hendricks lost. That guy was on the juice and GSP wanted to pay for the drug test but Hendricks didn’t take it because he knew he would fail. But GSP won 3 out of 5 rounds. Gave Hendricks 2 rounds. Watch it again and you’ll agree.
Gsp was gifted some wins though. Also a greasing accusation comes to mind.
@@BillyBob-wq9flGifted some wins? Against who. Name one single person. One of the most dominant champions of all time was “gifted some wins”. You’re a dolt.
@@BillyBob-wq9fl greasing yeah but when was he gifted wins? Hendricks doesn't count he was juiced to the grills and he even tapped in the 1st round but referee missed it
Shogun takedown attempts were just waste of energy. Unbelievable how the coach has not adjusted that....
The commentator always emphasizing Shogun's strikes f'kn pisses me off. This is a great fight and Lyoto won the fight. Stay neutral and recognize the trend of the fight not some single good strikes. I absolutely hate biased commentators picking a side.
Fightmetric stats favored Shogun in every round except the 3rd. It was a clear 49-46 for Rua. Not the massive robbery people make it out to be but it was a bad decision bud, Shogun did enough to win.
Rua's fighting stance look so cool, i thought he won this fight as well. But regardless this is a showing of elite strikibg from 2 elite strikers arguably the best of their era (and jon jones of course).
The way he bobbed in rhythm and feinted with his lead hand was so smooth.
The casters pure bias. When Machida hits shogun still shogun score😂😂
Niesamowite umiejętności po obu stronach, refleks szybkosć dynamika i nieprzywidywalnosć. Piekny spektakl na naj wyższym poziomie...
Lyoto was landing a lot of straight punches and knees to the gut. Stuffed them takedowns too. Jon Jones watched this fight very closely, he opened the title fight with a knee that Shogun never recovered from. Jones watched all the LHW fights that Machida fought, Machida exposed a lot of holes in their game that Greg Jackson took advantage of.
2 cascas grossas, lutasso, Lyoto foi melhor mesmo
Luta épica
Cant wait to see Yuri vs Alex part 2 hopefully it will be half as good as LYOTO n SHOGUN.
This trilogy I believe this was, was awesome
Jon Jones attempted a homicide on these two fighters
Is discusting how Rogan is biased when UFC wants a winner like wanted Shogun champion in that night
Luta de dois samurais !!!!
The fifth round is actually really close. I'll give Machdia round 2,3 and 5 Great close fight.
Lyoto e um samurai 🎉
if you like this watch Pride Shogun vs Nogeira (Rogerio)pride midelweight tournament 205lb
Shogun won this fight leg kicks and octagon control was on point the whole night Lyoto had his moments but too far and in between
Good gravy MMA fighters are tough. A single one of those kicks or knees to the body would have probably had us sore and slow for days, and these guys ate countless. That bruising had to be bad next few days.
Machida was shocked he won
Alpha happened in a UFC event. it was like Ryu vs Saga.
I would not want to be the one that decided who won this fight it was close. I always liked both of them they were very skilled at what they did
Shogun Fera mas Jones amassou ele
Lyoto before this fight was a fighter everyone avoided. Enters Jon Jones few fights later.
This should've been a split decision victory for Rua.
Joe was abit biased on the commentary
This is still one of the worst robberies I've ever seen in mma. I like Lyoto, but this was a travesty.
horrific decision. This is what happens in UFC time and again.
they fought well, i thought the winner is shogun. however, the result was different. after that, in rematch, shogun did finish machida.
Shogun kicked the shit outta him
The announcer’s bias in favor of Rua was ridiculous. Rua missed more leg kicks than he landed.
The fightmetric stats heavily favored Rua. Yes Rogan has a tendency to start talking up one fighter (especially leg kicks lol) but the fact is Shogun should have won this decision, not the worst robbery in UFC history by any means but it was a bad decision.
Enfim, tamanho não é documento.
Biggest robbery ever
Terrible decision. Shogun won clearly and I say that as a fan of both fighters.
Machida 100% right decision in this video
👍
Back during a time when no one could solve the puzzle to beat machida. Shogun came in out of nowhere, dismantled the champ and friken got robbed.
out of nowhere??
@@kallebaah0 yeah meaning that he came out from the shadows and did what no one could’ve expected, considering machida was at his absolute pinnacle beating everyone and looked unsolvable.
Na revanche Shogun quase matou o Lyoto.
Sim. E o Jones quase mata os dois . Grandes lutadores
@@lucifer1313 e Gustaffson e Reyes macetaram jones.
If you want to show us a fight, show us the whole fight!!!!!
Lyoto muito superior ,mereceu a vitória
Empate
Shogun venceu claramente.
Assaltaran o Shogun coitado
Rampage jackson
This was a good fight. Don’t really care about this fight since Shogun won the second fight.
Pelas imagens o Shogun foi melhor 😂
Achei machida melhor... shogun estava dando bicudas correndo... cambaleou algumas vezes. Chutes inexpressivos.
Shogun was the best
@@sevenbenderPlease stop the glue sniffing 🙏
Machida venceu
Lyoto lost that fight
Robbery
Roubado
This fight was lame.
Worst decision I’ve ever seen
Achei que garfaram o Shogun nessa luta. Ele levou fácil
machida won this fight with no doubt
Ui!
Jon Jones destroyed both of these men with ease.
ive watched this fight at least 50 times. Shogun basically kicked lyotos body and legs to pieces. Result was wrong, but didnt matter in the long run.
Campeão do Pride e UFC.
Falou o "manjador" LOL
Shogum ex lutador e o Machida é o melhor
