Lyoto Machida faced off against former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 84 on May 24, 2008, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in what was thought to be Ortiz's final UFC appearance after a dispute with UFC President Dana White.
Machida frustrated Ortiz with lateral movement and counterstriking while successfully defending against the former champion's takedowns. In the closing minutes of the third round Machida knocked Ortiz down with a knee to the body. As Machida moved in to finish the fight, Ortiz almost locked in a triangle choke before transitioning to an armbar attempt. Machida managed to escape and win by unanimous decision, with all judges scoring the fight 30-27 in his favor. Years after the bout, Dana White revealed that the only time he ever awarded a personal check of his to a fighter was to Machida, for defeating Ortiz.
Man, I miss the old UFC.
me too :)
Me too, glad we have KZhead so we can watch old fights like this :)
WORD!
100
Everyone fought each other back in these days.
The old UFC was pretty action packed and these guys are absolute legends
They should get seniors to fight
@@kinbolluck476Have you not watched Bellator?
Still is action packed.
Prime Machida was something else
What a time
It’s kinda nuts people forget him. Cleared out everyone in LHW when it was stacked, went like 13-0 before Jones beat him. If not for Jones fighting at the same time, he’d be in the conversation for best LHW
@@bigjer7589 Machida wasn't undefeated when he fought Jones. Rua knocked him out in their rematch .
Rush King Machida
@@bigjer7589 Lyoto was on his decline when he met Jones
I never realized how close Tito came to getting that submission.
Sooo close....I had my bet ticket in my hand
Really sweaty at the end of the fight. Maybe in the first round, Machida can't slip out.
Teve que saber sair da chave tmb ....
Machida ran the whole fight. Not matching well with Tito's style.
@@Bucephalus84So if you're opponent's strength is striking, the manly "right" thing to do is stand there like a crash dummy and try to bang with them? Or maybe, it would be to avoid those strikes and use your mobility to your advantage?? 🤔🤡
Lyoto was a real Samurai
favorite era of ufc.
Tito Ortiz was actually competitive on this one. Good times, good times.
Shows you how he was tough as nails, even then, when he was out of his "prime." Machida banged on him that whole fight and Ortiz just kept moving forward.
@@redriderbbgun8018 Tito was the man during his days. This was peak Machida and he couldn't get Tito out of there.
@@glenncon2894 Hell, Tito almost flipped the script and got Machida out of there. Would have loved to see Dana's face afterwards lol
@@paiv4256 Yeah. Dana hates Tito's guts and Machida was the next big thing this time around.
I don’t know how he kept going after those brutal jaw kicks
That knee to the solarplexus is one of the most incredible mma moves I've ever seen. So well timed, and brutally painful to Ortiz. He just went down like a sack of potatoes, my god.
@@Dave-zz9fh If I were an MMA fighter, that move would definitely be in my arsenal.

Wow i forgot how good of a fight this was. Lyoto wasn't just a striker. The way he took down Ortiz was impressive and, how he slipped out of that arm bar/triangle.
Lyoto stopped being a savant when he fell in love with his knockout punches and forgot his sumo and clinch work which opened up those opportunities.
@@pescatoralpursuit1726 Lyoto could of gone further if he stuck to his strengths.
@@mitchjames9350 Problem was Lyoto was an old dude (in fighters years) by the time he won the title. Being 32 at the time, I really believe that played a giant part in him being unable to get another belt. He started to lose against fighters he would have mopped the floor with only a few years earlier.
Was not even close.
nah tito actually didnt secure it properly. his right hand should be grabbing lytotos left arm preventing to create space. yeah it was tight coz tito squeeze like balls but lyotos elbow was almost out
I always wondered if Lyoto could have cut weight and fought smaller guys. He always looked out muscled even during some of his most impressive wins.
He did fight at middleweight too.
@@MoosicDude cool, I didn’t remember that, or maybe I missed those altogether. Do you remember who he fought in that division?
@@tibbar1000 He fought some legends at that weight Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort and Chris Weidman among others.. I'm just really sad he never fought Anderson Silva. Those two in their prime would have been incredible.
@@MoosicDude wow. I remember a couple of those but did not realize they were middleweight fights. Thanks

@@Jesseleeg Tito took the loss like a man, humble at the end.
Machida was so slippery. So good at avoiding taking direct shots.
The good ol days, UFC had 2 karate champs, GSP and Machida
Yeah but there is more champ category karate fighters like Wonderboy or Robert Whitaker
GSP didn't use it though, so it is reaching. Machida, Wonderboy and Whittaker do.
@@MVProfitsKarate was the foundation of GSPs style, it was the first martial arts he learned because he was bullied as a kid cause he was small, he only learned other martial arts when he went full MMA, karate is evident in his striking just like Machida

absolutely crushing knee to the body in the 3rd

I seen this on spike many years ago and I really was impressed to see karate being utilized in the UFC.
Machida's speed, elusiveness, counter skills, feints was a beauty to watch. He was like the Muhammad Ali of MMA. Prime Machida is one of the greatest LHW fighter (top 5), only very few that could and would beat him.
ali of mma, it was exactly what i was thinking!!!!!!!!
the way he evades and counters always look like he’s doing it at the same time. He’s so fluid with it. One of the most underrated LHW. And he was thrown into the lion’s den from the start of his career talking about the quality if fighter he fought unlike others who fought alot of nobodies early in their careers
Until Jon jones faked the kick and put him to sleep 🛌
That Sumo style where Lyoto shrugges off the clinch is awesome.
I always come back and watch Machia highlight's that liver kick in this fight, and his spike trips, and that perfectly timed straight punch, he did when they were coming into attack are some of my favorite moves, I have seen to this day in mma.
Machida is MMA's version of "float like a butterfly but sting like a bee."
Machida way stronger than he look
I don't even watch the UFC like I did in this era. I just watch it on KZhead to a couple of fighters after there fights and just the highlights. Back then I would watch the UFC fight after fight after fight. This was the era. Rampage, Mir, Machida, lesner, cain Velasquez, junior dos Santos,
Tito: stop moving so I can pound you. Lyoto: I'm not Jenna...
That knee was beautiful
Excellent match, thank you
Eu gostava de ver esse Tito lutar. Lyoto nesse tempo tambem era o melhor.
IMHO Machida was fairly underrated
By who? He was the undefeated undisputed, reigning, defending champion.
@@CalvinHikes what does that have to do with being underrated? He was not marketable. He was not a trash talker. That’s what fills seats. He wasn’t one of them.Take this as a lesson. Boy.
Dana white was shaking while watching this fight. He wanted Tito to lose so much, his last fight with ufc.
This was a great fight. Action packed
This is the fight that made me a Machida fan.
People remember Machida as a Karate striker, but forget he’s a Jiu Jitsu black belt as well…
Lyoto é o inimigo da “luta feia” muito técnico e cheio de “cartas na manga” nunca se sabe qual coringa ela vai puxar na luta.
this the first machida fight i saw and hes been my favorite ever since!!!
Lyotos rise was really fun to watch. He was a tough riddle to solve for a while. This was a Flawless fight by him.

Had that triangle worked it would have changed history big time.

o cara foi totalmente anulado no controle de distância, ficou tão frustrado que começou a chamar pra luta kkk
Uma boa luta e um respeito entre os atletas
Lyoto was different. No intimidating demeanor or macho attitude like one expects from fighters, but a very gentle guy instead. I bet a lot of opponents underestimated him because of that.
The opposite of tito
Não entendo nada de luta, mas é nítido como Lyoto não desperdiça golpe. Sempre buscando a precisão.

That triangle choke was crazy
Nice to see the UFC allowing older content to be posted to it's youtube accounts like this. We all know the fix is in.
