Polish Czech Conversation | Professions | Slavic Languages Comparison
This Polish Czech conversation is a special one. As it’s the first episode of a series of Polish Czech lessons based on Slavic languages mutual intelligibility phenomena. #slavic Me as a Polish teacher and Vít as a Czech teacher are going to learn each other’s languages by having back and forth bilingual conversations on different topics.
In this video we discuss professions.
In the course of the conversation, we mention 20 different professions in total. But we focus on discussing 3 in more detail to compare relevant vocabulary in both languages and we utilize a guessing game to give structure to the lesson.

They definitely learned each others languages at least a little bit because polish is very easy to misunderstand and most czech people don't understand 89 percent of polish language

I'm a Russian living in Prague (so I know Czech), and knowing both Ru and Cz gives me a chance to understand both of you in 99% of the time. Cool content actually, go on!
I have a theory that if you know one extra Slavic language on the top of your native one you can understand them all. What about my conversations with other Slavs? Do you understand them well? :)
@@Ecolinguist i kinda agree with your theory but only if a person knows another slavic language that's not close to their native language. I mean many Ukrainians or Belarusians can speak 2 language (Ukrainian/Belarusian and Russian) but they still won't be able to understand Czech or Slovenian. But if they know Ukrainian and, say, Croatian - then your theory can be applied.

As a native english speaker learning Czech. Slavic languages are blowing my mind. It is so clear how the surrounding countries influenced the languages. I love it!
I meen not influenced, but have a common roots.
@@user-tq4uy5zh1j when I say influenced I mean that the slavic languages closer to Northern and Western Europe sharing some Germanic and Nordic words and one's closer to the Middle East having Arabic speaking patterns. It's obvious the intermingling of culture helped shape that. So cool.

It is as a loanword from Swedish, I guess, there in Finnish too: lääkäri 'doctor'.
In Ukrainian - likar. Likar likuje liudej - a doctor treats people.

I'm Polish and I had a Czech girlfriend. We could understand each other fairly well. It was a fun aspect of our relationship speaking to each other in our native tongues. Especially when she wasn't able to express herself with her poor English.
The difference between Czech uchitel' and Polish naucziciel for professor... Is that in Poland they finish teaching their lessons 😊 Perfective aspect....

Uwielbiam jak ten nauczyciel z Czech mówi "Ano, ano" albo "Jo jo" - to brzmi tak przyjaźnie 😃
Ja jsem Čech a taky mě se na to baví koukat. Učitel češtiny říká i slovo "tak" což je posky "ano", u nás se používá když chceme říct nebo či doplnit větu
"Jo jo" jest zarazem tak przyjemnym zwrotem jak i dla mnie przynajmniej momentami denerwującym zwrotem, przez podobne korzenie ogólnie języków i też zapożyczeń. Słysząc ten zwrot po czesku to tak jak zostało wspomniane brzmi to przemilo i utwierdza w przekonaniu że ktoś cię słucha (zresztą takich zwrotów wstępuje ogorm w większości języków na świecie co nawet prowadzi czasami do nieporozumień ale nieważne) ale jak tylko go usłyszeć w polskim to mnie krew zalewa ale wynika to pewnie z mieszkania od urodzenia w dużym mieście w regionie który znaczącej gwary po 2 wojnie światowej nie ma i każdy z otoczenia używał "podręcznikowego" polskiego. Kwestia pewnie przyzwyczajenia i właśnie różnic w znaczeniach niektórych słów zakażenie właśnie od regionu albo zupełnie nowe zwroty, które brzmią źle (?). Źle jako dziwnie i dające odczucie typu "co tu zaszło, czemu ta forma powstała jest wiele innych sensowniejszych ààà". Przykładowo "poczemu" występujące bodajże na Podlasiu i jak nie trudno się domyśleć znaczy "dlaczego/czemu". Nigdy i tak nie przeżyje przeklętego "na pole" z Krakowa (nic oczywiście złego w żadnej z gwar nie jest, osobiście uważam, że są ciekawe i można na ich bazie zobaczyć etymologie różnych słów albo interakcje między różnymi językami) i tak pewnie kwestia różnicy właśnie pochodzenia i znaczenia w tym kontekście ale pewnie będzie mnie drażnić w taki czy inny sposób nie ważne co.
'jo' is from bavarian 'jo' which comes from german 'ja' - 'yes'. In czech republic its the informal way to say 'yes'

I'm French woman who learned Russian in school (I have a reasonably good level by now), and Czech by myself (which I learned by myself so my level is weaker), and I understood a good chunk of what you guys were saying. I would love to see more videos involving the Czech language!

C'est formidable! You're level of proficiency in those two languages must be quite high! I know French and Italian (and even quite a bit of Latin and Spanish), but I doubt that I could understand much of a talk between a French and a Provencal, or a Spaniard and a Catalan :-)
The guys are communicating in two different languages? That's amazing, it seems that Polish and Czech are almost the same languages. Very intelligable. That's closer than some dialects in Germany are related to each other.
In fact all slavic languages are so intelligable that a basic converstation can occur.
Not that similiar, you need to speak very slowly to understand, but yes, very similiar to each other, but not necesserily intelligible, Czech and Slovak on the other hand are really similiar, we understand each other almost perfectly.
Yea, Czech and Slovakian normally talk with each other every day, and we understand 99,99% Of what we are saying to each another

V nejpřesnějším (najdokładniejszym) překladu polský "znachor" je to český "mastičkář", ale v nejdoslovnějším překladu staročeský "mastičkář" je to staropolský "maściarz" (novočeský "lékárník" / novopolský "aptekarz", jinými slovy: farmaceut, který pracuje v novopolské "aptece" / v staroceské "apotyce" / v novočeské "lékárně", ale v které česká "mast" stále je to polská "maść" :)

Great job! As a bilingual Ucrainian/Russian speaker, I understood both parties pretty easily. All of our four languages share lots of words. Although the accent in Czech is a little bit more difficult for me, it is understandable when spoken slower. Some words in Polish and Czech refer to the old Slavonic language used like 1000 years ago, that is also fun. I had to "stretch" my knowledge of our ancient sagas and manuscripts. :-)

Kiedyś w Barcelonie spotkałem dwie Czeszki, też na wakacjach. Byłem zaskoczony, że one po swojemu, my po swojemu i się doskonale rozumieliśmy. Niesamowicie podobne języki.

In Finnish the word for doctor is "lääkäri". I understand Czech language so well. Better than any other language I don't speak at all :D I'm polish and I live in Finland ^^

Ja niektórych słów nie rozumiem ale i tak po dłuższym wytłumaczeniu łapie o co chodzi
Jeden Polák mi říkal, když chceš, tak rozumíš. Neznám vše polský, protože některá slova jsou původně slovanská, některá zase naopak německá atd, navíc to specifické zkreslení tvaru ze staroslovanstiny, to ještě nemluvím o psané formě komunikace, ty sprezky, ale většinu polský rozumím. Jednu větu na konci jsem nerozuměl téměř ani slovo ale to nevadí, polský rozumím lépe než německy a anglicky a říkám polakum, mluvte radši na mě po vašem, budu lépe rozumět.
À propos de "lékař/lekarz", c'est tout à fait exact, la même racine indo-européenne se retrouve dans les langues scandinaves: "læge" en danois, "lege" en norvégien, "läkare" en suédois et sans doute des termes similaires en féroïen et en islandais. Je connais un peu le tchèque et assez bien le danois et j'aime énormément les sonorités de la langue tchèque: c'est une langue magnifique!

Musím souhlasit, že můj zájem o jazyky velmi souvisí s mým zaměřením na programování, algoritmizaci, hledání a sestavování pravidel a vzorců, logiku obecně. Na matematicko-fyzikální fakultě, kde jsem studoval je celý ústav formální a aplikované lingvistiky a učí se tam matematická a komputační lingvistika. Je to krásný obor ke kterému si lze nalézt cestu jak od humanitního vzdělání, tak i od čistě technického.

I am Irish and have learned polish and I can understand 75% of Czech. Slovakian is even more similar to polish 🤣 I travel to Poland yearly and Slovakia also and it’s handy being able to communicate.
I am sorry to tell you this but Slovakian is way more compatible with Czech than it is with Polish in sentence structure, vocabulary etc. 😅 However people who are not native speakers always find Czech very distinct from those two which is weird to me.. like Czechs/Slovaks absolutely don't need to switch from their native languages. I go to uni in Prague and I have several Slovak colleges who just do their exams in Slovak. It's possible because those two languages are so similar (this wouldn't happen if they went to uni in Poland tho) 🤷🏻♀️ But impression that "Czech is different" probably comes down to accent and that Czech took a bit more from German than the other two.
I am Chinese, I do speak czech, I can catch some polish words, especially nouns, therefore I am able to understand 30% of polish, Slovakian is much more closer to Czech.
@@eliskaneugebauer5338 yes, very similar languages, mostly grammars are the same too, but I realise one case in czech and slovak is different, czech say: mám dobré studenty, slovak: mám dobrých študentov. （something like this, i dont speak slovak).
@@eliskaneugebauer5338 You are totally right. Czech and Slovak are almost the same language. I am Czech from Romania, I don't hear Slovak very often like you, from the Czech Republic, but I understand it 100% due to the similarity.
Hodne zajimave video. Narodil jsem se ve slezsku, zil jsem 18 let par kilometru od polskych hranic, takze spouste vecem rozumim, ale stejne mam obcas problem pobrat o co jde. Hodne pomaha psana forma a to, ze se snazite vysvetlovat pojmy. Pokud ale mluvite rychleji, je tezsi pochopit smysl. Nejzajimavejsi je, ze mame spoustu slov podobnych nebo stejnych, ale zaroven mame slova, ktera jsou stejna nebo podobna a maji jiny vyznam! Tesim se na dalsi video. Dziekuje
This is quite fascinating! I am using my knowledge of Ukrainian and Bulgarian to understand the conversation and I understand pretty much everything. I am also fluent in Russian, however, it is Ukrainian that helps me understand most of Polish and Bulgarian helps more than others with Czech.
It's true - Ukrainian is more similar to Polish, Czech and Slovak could be more similar to South Slavonic languages like Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian and possibly Bulgarian. However Polish people could understand Czech and Slovak quite well, probably Slovak is slightly easier for us.
Interesting that Bulgarian helps to understand Czech. To me it sounds like mix of Yugoslavian languages, Russian and something random. Only numbers are somewhat similar. On the other hand Yugoslavian languages are somewhat similar to Czech. Not as much as Polish, but at least it's somewhat possible to communicate with each other with effort. Problem is not knowing third of the words including basic ones, misunderstanding some others. But Bulgarian seems completely different than Czech to me.

Drogi Norbert, wspaniała robota! Zachwycająca, pełna ciekawostek. Piszę po polsku, bo jesteś Polakiem. Chciałbym się przedstawić: jestem Bułgarem, lingwistą w strefie komparatystyki języków romańskich. Dla mnie Twoje filmiki są szczególnie zabawne, przyczyną czego jest format Tobą wybrany. Jeszcze jeden szczegół: umiem 5 języków słowiańskich, z których 2 na poziomie C2, bułgarski i rosyjski, no i dalej w kolejności od najlepszego do najgorszego - czeski, polski i słowacki. Z resztą, będąc swojego czasu polotem wycieczek, no i tłumaczem oficjalnym, doszedłem do wniosku że najgorzej Słowianie z grupy języków zachodniosłowiańskich i wschodniosłowiańskich się orientują w języku bułgarskim, po prostu nie rozumieją jak się do nich mówi po bułgarsku. Główną przyczyną tego jest fakt że nasz język stracił zupełnie swój starodawny charakter syntetyczny i się już bardzo dawno stał językiem analitycznym, jak hiszpański, na przykład, czyli tam, gdzie przeciętny Słowianin oczekuje jakiejś fleksji jej tam nie ma, tam jest artykuł. Rosjanie też nie bardzo się w języku bułgarskim orientują jak się do nich mówi, natomiast jak czytają, rozumienie skacze do 65-80 procent. Dziękuję za Twoją pracę. Powodzenia.

@@Hliadac interesting, because when i look at you comment, i see the same letter, but one of them are write in azbuka and second in local latin alphabet. is pronunciation of belarusian and russian languages same as in czech/slovak languages? We have some different words, we write ' instead of ъ, we write ў after vowels, we have дз and дж in the alphabet, we have i instead of и, (1st is Russian, 2nd is Belarusian) жи = жы, ши = шы, ци = цы, ти = ці, чи = чы, writing of е and я depends on stressed syllable (I used Google to translate 2 last words, translation can be wrong) We speak Russian in Belarus and I can't answer your question. Some Belarusian people are don't understand the Belarusian language because they learnt it in school and didn't use it anymore in their life. I watched a video when somebody was giving Belarusian words to Russian people and almost nobody could translate it because in their language these words are different. We have same words (лес = лес) and different words (ліхтарык = фонарик). I think Belarusian and Russian people could understand each other but not everything. We have some Ukrainian and Polish words. A little bit words came from Czech. I think Ukrainian people understand Belarusian much better. (sorry for my English if I wrote something wrong xd)

čeština je možná sympatická, ale jen do doby než se ji začneš učit. Někteří češi neovládají výslovnost ani v dospělosti a s gramatikou je to stejné. Mě zas příjde polština jako tvrdé šišlání, které ovšem svou zvučností budí zajimavý dojem

I just wanted to make a suggestion which might help those whose native language is not Polish or Czech or those who are not very confident using either of the languages. When you repeat a Czech word or when Vit repeats a Polish word, you could write them in blue or red respectively. Overall, your channel provides invaluable insights into how languages evolved and how they are connected. Thank you!

As far as I know, for a long time, even after XI century Polish and Czech languages were about the same language. Ultimately, when Mieszko 1 married the Czech woman Dubrava and they were the first Catholic rulers of the christian Poland (just since 966 year), they had to understand each other and sometimes argue, for example, on too salty soup :) Best regards for Czech brothers from Poland! :)
Well around X century there was no Czech or Polish language. Just many similar dialects Slavic dialects used by different tribes. At that time most Slavs were most likely able to hold a conversation with one another no matter how distant their tribes were.
Well, funny enough I was taught during my studies that at this point there was still more or less "common" Slavic language. Although I was studying history, not linguistics. I literally hold a book about the Polabian Slavs in my hand right now that our right says so.

На жаль, чи на щастя, ми з дитинства володіємо двома слов'янськими мовами
так, більшість українців - так склалося - білінгви з народження. а білоруська від української відрізняється дуже умовно. тому, де вже є 2 (а може й 2,5 з урахуванням білоруської) слов'янські мови - третя сприймається легко. загальні принципи будови слов'янських мов відомі, залишається лише з'ясувати деталі і мова стає зрозумілою.

I find it soo cool that Polish and Czech languages have words that are considered archaic in Russian but yet sound so natural (sometimes better than the alternative in Russian, imo). Here's a list of those professions in Russian: 1. Zawod/Profesa is "Proféssija" in Russian. "Zawod" in Russian is a factory, actually! 2. Lekarz/Lekar is "Vrač" in Russian. We also have this word Lekar' but it's archaic and usually means an unqualified doctor. 3. Znachor/Lecitel is "Znáhar'" in Russian. Just like in Polish it means folk healer, it's basically a synonym to Lekar'. 4. Szpital/Nemocnice is "Bol'nica" in Russian. The word "Bol' " means pain so basically bol'nica is a place of pain, kinda similar to Czech logic. 5. Hydraulik/Instalater is "Santéhnik" or "Vodoprovódčik" in Russian. My understanding is that this word comes from soviet times because it is an abbreviation of "Sanitary technician". 5. Strazak/Hasič is "Požárnyj" in Russian. We too have a verb similar to Czech "Gasit' " which means to put out fire. 6. Remiza/Hasičarna is "Požárnaja chast' " or "Požárka" in Russian. 7. Kelner/Cisnik is "Oficiánt" in Russian. This is a weird one and I think it was improperly borrowed in Russian from French or Latin. 8. Kucharz/Kuchar is "Povar" in Russian. We too have word "Kuhar' " but it's considered archaic now (usually refers to a woman - "Kuharka"). 9. Kierowca/Ridic is "Voditel' " in Russian. From the verb "vodit' " to drive. 10. Tatuazysta/Tater is "Tatuiróvščik" in Russian.

If possible, I would like you to have two-way discussions with native kashubian and Silesian speakers. As you know, the first is also in the lechitic subgroup of west Slavic languages. i would be intrigued to hear at least two of its dialects. In the case of Silesian, whose exact classification is in much dispute, I would like to see the grammatical and syntactical differences-as well as similarities-it has with Polish.
