Black has a bishop and a pawn and we need to capture both in order to win as white. How to do it?
This is a puzzle by Henri Rinck and it was published in 1926.

I see that we have to win the bishop but the position is restricted and if we play a random move black will just advance the pawn. Conclusion : we have to attack the bishop with Kb8. If the bishop goes to e6, we will take it with a discovered check so he has to go to d7. We have to attack the bishop again with Kc7 and they have to play Be8(if not, we will just make a discovered check and take the bishop). We continue to attack the bishop with Kd8, Ke7, Kf8 and lastly trap the bishop and gain it with Kg7.
At first I couldn't find the solution but when I looked at the "strong play" I realized that the king should chase after the bishop.
My problem with these chess problems is that I cannot imagine how such silly positions could ever occur in a real game. Other than that they are amusing.
Thanks for this beautiful endgame position, glad to hear your good self after a long gap.
Thanks
Kb8 Bd7; Kc7 be8; Ng3+ ... Black abandons the pawn to keep the bishop. The bishop hunt will take some time...
3:48 Why not return the favor with Kd2?
Excellent as always... You are just brilliant to bring the best game preparations level chess.
Bloody pawn on the way !
if black responds with Kf2 (Kc8) Ke3 (Nc1) Kd2 fork? or Kf2 (Bb5) Ke3 (Kc8) Pf4... or Kf2 (Bb5) Bd7...the Knight would have to get to f1...I'm probably missing something as usual but it seems that there is a line of play that would be interesting.
This time I got at least the first few moves…
Amazing how white's king can chase the bishop all the way across the board.
Good one
Шикарний етюд. На тему ніколи не здавайтесь і знайте всі можливості легких фігур
But pawn is still there at the end.
On Blacks first move. Why would He move f4? Better would be Bd7.
What about 1.Kb8 f4 2.Kxc8 Kf2. Now White cannot take the pawn with 3.Nxf4 because of 3. ...Ke3. And Black guards the g3 square so the next Black move can be f3.
After Kb8, Black should respond with Bd7.
Solved
One of those where finding the solution isn't too tricky but you just marvel at the composition. Like how did anyone find such a strange position?
Nothing too strange in this position. To find yourself piece down but with an extra pawn is normal. It's just that we usually do not see this rare opportunities. Artificial are puzzles when yiu have obvious material advantage but are asked fof mate in 2 when there are 5 obvious ways to give mate in 3
