Again we look at a viewers puzzle and again it´s William Dolmer composing this brilliant study.
White is up in material but the end game can still be hard to win. But in fact, there is one variation that will make it a lot easier to win. Can you find it?
Do you have any puzzles/studies you want to share? One of your own compositions or perhaps something you found and really liked. E-mail me at mikael@vonbargen.se and I have a look at it! Basic rule for this channel is to use as few pieces as possible but still make it beautiful and unique.

  • Excellent.... But cant we win by just taking the pawn and not necessarily sacrificing Rook vs Bishop.... I understood the end game theory and things which was incredibly knowledgeable. You are just brilliant. Thank you very much and God bless you.

  • I saw the first three moves, but I thought White should take the pawn. I have just learnt that Rook versus Bishop is usually a draw. I need to study basic endgame theory.

  • I think that I'm finally seeing how to get opposition from more than one move ahead 🎉. Thank you for drilling these basics again and again.

  • My strategy was the pawn in the fifth row, cause opposition is not necessary. But Rh1 is the correct process

    • Agreed, the pawn + rook versus bishop feels like a much easier endgame, especially with the poorly placed bishop.

  • My strategy for the win? That’s easy … Insist that my opponent resign. This is as good as my attempt at getting the win by playing the position out. 🥴

  • (@4:03) - Sacking the rook for the bishop is unnecessary. After 1 … Kg8, 2 Rxg6+, Kf7 (or Kh7), 3 Ra6 and now black’s king can’t get to the white pawn, and white’s king and rook are now on white squares, immune to the bishop. After black moves, white will move 4 g6 and now all of white’s army is on white squares; black’s bishop is a useless paperweight. White can now move the king down (on white squares) to either help push the pawn on g6, or just get a king+rook and lone king checkmate using the g-pawn push to keep the bishop defending the g7 square. I’m sure Stockfish can do this with one eye closed. 😊

    • Hello it turns out after rxg6 kf7 is a draw for black according to the table base

    • Thanks for pointing this line out, I missed showing this in the video. This line is actually just a draw sine white will lose his g-pawn. After Ra6 black plays Bc3. If g6+, then Kg7. Next move black will play Bf6 and the pawn will fall. Even if you don't advance the pawn it will fall since black plays Bd2 to attack it, forcing it to g6. Then black plays Kg7 again, followed by Bg5 and Bf6. I double checked with Stockfish and it values it to be a dead draw directly after Rxg6 actually.

  • Rh1 kg8; Rh6 kg7; g5! Kg8; Rxg6+ ... If black pushes g5 sftr Rh6 then RG6+ wins the pawn outright and protects the white g pawn ad well If after Rh1 g5 then Rh5 will ensure black's g pawn is lost and the game as well...

  • 4:40 can you explain why Kb3 is the only winning move, i punched this into a comp to make a study on in and i notice only Kb3 wins here. But how to eplain how Kb3 here is opposition and the other moves not, since we are infact not opposing the black king in a distant opposition maner in a diagonal. The black king is on another dark square diagonal. but to go into this diagonal with our king makes it a draw. Perhaps we need to use the system of corresponding squares to explain this? Ah i think i get it, if you go any other direction than the fastest way up the white diagonal we allow the black king acces to the e6 square. By studying the alternativs the white king has to stop the black king enter the 6th row.. because if we playe Kb2, then the black king gets to 6th row it does not matter if we get opposition. Because we cant infiltrete with king in h file.. and with black king on 6th row we can never get to c file or infiltrate on the queen side eiter, since we will give the black king acces to f5 square and its black who will win. Also if we go Ka3 we are too far on thequeen side and black king will enter e6 and f5 squares and black is acctualy winning. So its not only about opposition here.. aditionaly to geting the opposition we have to be able to fend the black king on the 7the file. And additionaly to mark or understand this possition, when our king enters d5 the magic square. We have a OUTFLANKING possiton. The black king cant enter the e file anywhere since we are in d file and will enter it with taking the oppostion, so when we get to the d file the e file is poisioned for the black king. And going to f8 will not help them any more.
