  • I've watched this a few times, and I can't help just take from it, that Keane is not only extremely humble.... but his respect for other players as HUMANS, is amazing. He's spoken about taken advice and tips off senior players, when he was in his youth... and also he always talks about being a senior player, and having others take information from him. At 35 years old, the names of Hughes, Sharpe, Bruce etc.... it's great to see him remind me of how good they were. Whatever you think of his punditry, you can't deny he's so respectful about players HE'S played with, and also humble about his journey.

Obviously we don't know the full extent of how Lingard/Pogba etc are behind the scenes but it's the perception that their social media gives off and the way they play in games.

  • Roy talked about the character the most and football being priority irrespective of what else was happening around those players. At that time (even today) if you are at United, you definitely have players with skills and talent. It is how they keep their hunger for Trophies high and take responsibility when the game is not going their way. Some of the current squad players won't put effort and drown easily in negative emotions even when the game is a draw. Maybe the low desire for glory due to hefty pay-check and long contracts made them think they can't be disposed of for putting less shift. Also, As Roy pointed out most of the players at his time at United were self-motivated for improvement rather than coaches asking them every day to train hard or work out the issues themselves. They just follow the training module and when something comes out of the syllabus, they choke. I think the brilliant character is the most distinct feature of any big team that separates them from other teams because in terms of raw quality United had brilliant players then and even now but that mentality in the squad is missing.

He might seem stony-faced and reserved at first glance, but underneath you can tell he adores football more than almost anything in the world. Keane’s undying loyalty to his teammates is wholesome as it is hilariously biased, woeful punditry. I love the guy

    • Football was miles better in the 90s- Ronaldo and messi are still In the top 5/6 now and they’re about 800

    • @@deanBORO Premier league football in the early 90s was proper rubbish. The quality was low, seriously. It was arguably only the 4 or 5th best league in the world until tv money started filtering in, foreign players started to be recruited and standards started to improve. By the late 90s the premier league was amazing to watch. But the standards now compared to then are obviously higher, its very hard to argue otherwise. Training, tactics, nutrition - all leaps and bounds from the 90s. A 90s premier league fullback like Irwin would simply not cut it in today’s game. The game has progressed leaps and bounds. Football isn’t static, it will always keep progressing and evolving

    • Liverpool fan. To be honest, from that list of midfielders especially, you can never have a terrible midfield. You can rotate it each week. So when he said Robson and Ince, I wasn't really surprised. They were both brilliant players.

  • Van Nistelrooy came in after Schmeichel and Stam left which left United far more vulnerable at the back with Barthez and also Blanc was on his last legs. Had prime peter and jaap still been there then Ruud would have won even more trophies.

    • I agree with you. That's the same thing I thought. Nistelrooy came into a team in transition. Certain rocks were either crumbling or gone, especially Peter & Jaap.
