In this video i will show you an easy way to install a SWA cable and fit an earth gland and earth nut to the steel wire armoured cable. I will show you exactly how to connect this into an outdoor junction box. I will guide you through step by step.   • Excellent video👍 clear and informative. One thing worth mentioning is that the steel wire armour should not be visible at the bottom of the gland assembly when you've tightened up the last waterproof nut with the rubber seal. If it is then the armour has been cut too long and the gland is not waterproof, despite the outer rubber shroud.

  • It’s a lot easier to push the shroud over the cable and the part of the gland needed before you expose the steel wires that can make it harder to do this

    • @@TheDIYGuy1 I took my swa from my old concrete shed via a waterproof connector the wires were different from the power in my old shed red,green,blue, and my 2.5mm colours were black , brown, grey . Can you recommend a CU for my shed taking in mind it will be supplying to 4 sockets 2 small led strip lights and a light switch.

  • Hi mate, In my house we have 1 junction box (Outdoor) and from there 2 SWA cable 2.5mm come out for 2 different areas. They are plugs but we use them for lighting and charging some battery tools in the garage. I'm worried maybe the consumption is not dangerous or maybe the installation. Excellent video mate!

  • Great video, very helpful! I'm looking to make off an SWA gland on a SWA Ethernet cable into a very similar junction box - does the SWA still need earthing? And if so, how would I do this, given there won't be an earth to connect to? I can't find anything online that covers this and it's driving me crazy haha

  • Great video, can you spur off any ring mains socket providing you add a fuse spur? I.e. when all ring sockets are already protected by a RCD at the board?

    • Yes, in theory, you shouldn't spur off a spur but fuse it with 13amp fuse.

    • I still use a hacksaw for this but you can get purpose built cutters.

  • Hi mate. When you have 4 core, red, blue, black, yellow, is the connection to the meta box (metal stands) to CPC of the 4 core as no CPC in the 4 core.

    • It should be fine, the only time this would have trouble for regulations is when you're installing it in a "special location" a.k.a a bathroom, if you're still worried use a higher IPX grade junction box

    • Armoured cable is normally the safest choice if you're running to a garage or an outbuilding, ideally the cable will be buried but you can clip along a wall, fence etc. if you don't mind having it on display.

    • Part P applies here because installing SWA could be part of a job that would be notifiable work, e.g adding an additional circuit for an outbuilding.

  • Where did you then connect the earth wire from the SWA nut to earth it? To a socket?

    • You connect it with the earth coming from the consumer unit, use a WAGO 221 2-way connector to attach them together or if the junction box is metal or has an additional earthing terminal inside the box (usually found in the corner of a box) you will need a 3-way WAGO 221 connector to add an additional earth wire to the box :)

  • Quick few questions So what are you connecting the SWA to. Is that just 2.5 twin and earth from the ring main. And on the otherside at the shed for example would you do the same. Connect it to 2.5 twin and earth using terminal blocks and then connect up your sockets Secondly the SWA i saw online has difference colour cable. Grey, black and brown. Is this the same stuff. Also I was going to trail the cable underground in conduit. Have you got it under the slabs?

    • You have 3 phase colours, the black and grey can be sleeved with blue and green + yellow sleeve for single phase application, did this an hour ago 😉

  • Better using a SWA cable stripper it looks like a plumbers pipe cutter and you just move it round and round the cable it cuts through the wire as well

  • Put the shroud over the cable before anything else, dont want to install the cable to realise you need to take it all apart again because you've forgotten to put the shroud on. I have done that before lol

  • there is a much easier way than faffing about with a hacksaw simply use a standard plumbers adjustable pipe cutter, it will cut through the outer sheath and score the armour wires in seconds perfectly straight around the cable

  • Hi, Great vid massive help. Question: i need to power man cave and wouldn’t mind an outdoor socket too. Can I take the power from inside 13amp socket, to outdoor water tight socket, then SWA from that socket to cave ? I’d the. Want to run lights and sockets off the other end in the cave.   • A bit more armour exposed than I would, but WELL DONE, "the diy guy" shows how a 2022 SWA is terminated with the Banjo in the BIN!!! If you are under the age of 80 Banjos should not be part of your life!

  • I would never do that! I would slide the gland over the wire first then take the outer insulation off and bend and cut the Armoured steel off. I would never show someone how to take a saw to it with that last bit of wire going underground 😮
