If you’re a football fan of any age, you’ve probably heard of Edson Arantes do Nascimento - although you might not know it. That’s because Mr do Nascimento is better known as Pele. And Pele is among the greatest footballers of all time. Don’t take our word for it. Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbauer and Eusebio called him the “most complete” footballer they’ve ever seen. Argentinian coach Cesar Luis Menotti described him as a mixture of “Alfredo Di Stefano, Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff and Leo Messi." Michel Platini, the great French midfielder, put it best: “To play like Pele is to play like God.” So, more than 40 years on from his retirement, we ask: how good was Pele actually?

    • Problem is: there wasn't a brazilian league before the 1970's. They played state championships. Most of Pelé's official matches were for Sao Paulo state championship. There was also a Rio-Sao Paulo interstate championship. In the early 60's a national cup (not a league) was created where some state champions would play against each other, around 5 or 6 teams participated and it would sum up to less than 10 matches in total. Nevertheless the brazilian teams as a whole were very strong, almost all the players of the national team played in Rio or Sao Paulo championships, so even the state championships were high level.

  • The statistical stuff take away from his actual magnificence. The man, especially when he was on top his game, would upset the defense, his teamates and even the cameras at times with the most subtle faints. Just watch him play in the 1958 Final vs Sweden and check a couple of his misses. At one point, he gets the ball from a long cross, controls it with his chest like its a balloon, knees it with his right over a defender and then shoots it with his left, the ball never touching the pitch in all of this sequence. Thats a 17 year old boy, playing as if this was some street game. As Tostao said, where all others struggled to find out what they were going to do in the next second Pele had a whole feature film playing in his mind. Unparalleled mental speed and intuition.

  • Pele did something no else did before or after his time. He revolutionized the game. Rivelino, another football legend, the number 7 on that 1970 Brazil's dream team once said no one on that generation ever even came close to Pele. And here were talking Gerson, Tostão, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto and Rivelino himself. Mainly because Pele was the first real football athlete. He was both technically, mentally and physically at least a decade in front of everyone else. All the mechanics of his game: the dribbling, the skills, the pace, the almost perfect ambidextrous finishing, the above average strength an aerial capability. All of those fundaments were reinvented by him. You don't see anyone doing the kinds of moves Pele did before him. You can think someone's better than Pele. Some player might someday win 3 world cups, stop a war and score over 1000 goals. But it's very unlikely that will ever be a single athlete that can change a whole sport as Pele did. There's a football before Pelé and another football after Pelé.

    • @@abelarcos5235 You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Watch Pele goal against Sweden in the 1958 WC final. How can you say that Pele only socre tap ins? Are you out of your mind? The man could dribble past the whole opposition defence. He scored headers, long shots, volleys, free kicks, penalty kicks and with both legs in or out of the box. He was an absolutely complete player. Non-european playes could not run for the Ballon D'or award util 1995. How the fuck would Pele win a Balon D'or if it was a prize exclusively for European players? And also, of course football is better today than it was back in the day of Pele or Eusebio and Di Stefano. The sport is always evolving and will continue to do so. In fifty years football will be way more competitive in terms of physical, tactical and technical atributes. And some kid on some comment section in 2060 will say that Cristiano and Messi weren't that good because in the 2010's football was lame.

    • @@abelarcos5235 you don’t know what you’re talking about if you think he just scored tap ins. Ridiculous thing to say. Secondly, no competition? Wrong. Brazilian league was a lot different to what it is today. And if pele’s competition was so awful, why wasn’t he? Why was he able to stand out amongst them? He got the same training, played on the same pitches, kicked the same balls as all of them. If pele were born in 1995 instead of 1940, and he had access to all the modern training techniques, high tech gyms, nutritionists, personal trainers, amazing pitches, lighter footballs, and everything else that comes with being a modern footballer, he would currently be the best player in the world. Just like how if Messi were born in 1940, he would be the best player of the 1960s. Oh and btw, pele was a far more well rounded player than CR7 has ever been.

  • Saying Champions League is replacing World Cup is just an attempt to discredit World Cup competition from fanboys to excuse LM and CR for not having won one. The truth however is that World Cup is the real place where someone can show how worthy he is in terms of personal abilities and lidership, because now at Champions League you play with other great players in great teams, so that doesn't make you the best player by default. You have to prove that by playing with weaker teams or with your national team and win the titles. Then you show that personal diference and convince the others. Pele and Maradona both proved this at local and national levels , but not Messi and CR

    • @@samhynnz892 Well yes, it is a team sport, and therefore it is hard to judge for single performances. You have some champions who have the chance to grow and live in a golden era for the football in their country, and some other not. But here is the thing, Zidane managed to transcend french team to make it a winning team, and Jacquet built a team around him because he thought he could be a leader for titles. Good calculation indeed. Pelée, the volume speaks for himself, i mean. It's like romario or lets say Bagio. For these players, the longevity and the volume speak for emself. And as for Pelé, it's 3 titles for world cup where he was an obvious decisiv element for his team (which were dominant teams with strong individualities, i have to agree with that). As for Messi, he failed to transcend his national selection to make it win. Maybe Maradona is quite right about his statement "hes a good guys, but not a leader". Messi was gifted and prolly the most spectacular player of his era, but he failed as a leader for his national team, this is just the reality. In the decisiv moments he didn't show up as a legend, as Maradona did for Argentina. The same can be said about Krujff. I would put Ronaldo 7 aside because i don't think Portugal ever had the dimension to win WC.

According to Messi and Cr7 fans' way of "thinking", the goals scored in game like Santos 6x 3 Benfica in the final of the Paris Tournament in 1961, in which Pelé scored 2 goals and Euzébio 3, would not count...That is ridiculous, like ignoring and trying to bypass the history of football itself. And Pelé is the greatest not only because he is about 500 goals ahead of them, but because the whole of his career and what it represented, created, inspired. Pelé was complete, and not only 5 times the best...but he was always considered the best during all the years he played and still is until today by those who understand football. He had perfect control of the ball, played precisely with just the necessary effort. Only abroad, Pelé scored 361 goals. From May 23 to July 5, 1959, Santos would travel to Europe for the first time and Pelé, still 18 years old, would play 22 games in a month and 12 days, scoring 38 goals. In other words, the team played a game every 1.9 days and Pelé, despite obeying this tiring script for any mortal, he reached an average of 1.7 goals per game. Some results of Pelé against the Europeans: Santos 5x1 Barcelona (Pelé beat Cruif) Santos 6x3 Benfica (Pelé beat Euzébio). During this period Santos, with Pelé, faced the great Benfica five times outside Brazil: once in Paris, once in Lisbon, once in Buenos Aires and twice in New York. In those games Santos de Pelé did not lose at any time and had four wins and a draw against the great European and Pelé scored five goals, an average of one per game. The match in which the King scored more times was precisely the only “official”: there were three goals in the final of the 1962 Interclub World Cup, in which Santos thrashed the powerful opponent, in Lisbon, by 5 to 2. Of the champions, Internazionale, twice world champion in 1964 and 1965, was the team that suffered the most goals from the King: no less than ten. Ex Santos 7 X Internazionale 1 (Pele 4 goals) Roma 0 X 5 Santos (Pelé 1 goal). Pelé not only beat the European champions of the time, but also impressed the best players who showed him great respect after.

In early 70’s Santos supporters had to sit down next to Palmeiras or Corinthians ou São Paulo supporters. Under those rules I had never experienced any violence among supporters. Everyone knew back then if you tried to break a fight against your opponent support, you would also get hurt badly. As a result, you were able to watch unforgettable matches and have fun peacefully. Also all social classes were able to afford futebol game tickets. I was a kid back then and I was able to watch games some games free. I had to wait at the gates until 30 minutes of second half when they let supporters enter the stadium free. Those 15 minutes were precious for me. Just perfect !!!

    • @@eduardofreitas5764 Hi!! good to hear from someone with experience! I'm 66 years old and first watch Pele play live, from the sideline (had a pass), Santos vs Junior FC (Barranquilla Colombia). Experienced first hand his real speed, ball control and space play. Unique game which tied 2-2 and the stadium was packed to capacity with fans wanting to see Pele play! well, Pele got into an argument with the Referee at beginning of Second half and expelled Pele!! needless to say the public that came to see Pele started to get violent and were going to lynch the Referee, right in the middle of the field!! Police intervened and had to fire gunshots in the air for people to back down. Finally, police surrounded the Referee and dressed him with regular clothes and sneaked him out. One of the other Officials finished the game. Oh, Pele came back and finished the game.

The game you attended is famous and it is in most documentaries about the King. Pelé was far from a walk in the park for referees in general. He was very smart in trying to use his prestige to influence referees but he was not successful in many occasions. The goal that Pelé scored against Italy in 1970 ( Final match): I was told that an Italian University made a deep study on the dynamics of Pelé’s jump to overcame Facchetti. It looks that Pelé stopped in the air to wait for the ball and advanced his had hard to score the goal. Check it out

  • Wow !!!!!!!!!! Finally a video about Pelé that doesn't go out of its way to insult him and try to undermine his achievements just to anyhow prove Messi Ronaldo are better. 4:53 Just a quick note here. While it's true that Pelé has a lot of friendly goals in his career, it's important to realise that the majority of these (200+ out of 526) were against 1st division teams from Europe or South America. Like it was mentioned in the video earlier at 2:08 Santos was playing tour games across the globe, even skipping official competitions, simply because it was much more lucrative for the club. His goal average in friendlies and competitive matches is actually almost identical proving that he wasn''t stat-padding, or else his average would have been much higher in friendlies.

  • I find it really absurd when people say another player is better than Pele. If you pick Pele from the 60's and put him on the field to play nowadays, he probably wouldn't be even the top 5 in the world. On the other hand, if you pick any player from the current era and put him on the field to play in the 60's, any of them wouldn't be top 5 in the world as well. So what's the most accurate comparison I believe we can make? I believe we must compare the difference between players from the same era. If we compare Pele with ALL players from the same era as him, we will find out that no one was even CLOSE to his technique, ability and so on, so Pele was the best by far. However, if we compare Messi or Ronaldo with the same players from their era we can't say the same thing, we can name Neymar, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Fenomeno, Thierry Henry, Zico, all these players are not that far from Messi and Ronaldo. That's why for me and for all people who had the pleasure to watch Pele playing, he is the greatest of all time by far and it's going to be really difficult to see a player to be as superior as Pele was comparing to the same players from his era.

    • Why Pele from the 60's would not be top 5 nowadays? If he was born in the 90's you can be sure he would, but considering that Pele from the 60's the game was so different from nowadays and that's why he wouldn't be top 5 Why Messi/Ronaldo would not be top 5 in the 60's? If they were born in the 50's they would probably be, but considering Messi/Ronaldo from this era they would suffer a lot with defenders from the 60's, with the heavy ball, the heavy jersey and so on That's why we must compare each player with other players from their era. And then we will notice Pele was much superior to any other player from the 60's than Messi/Ronaldo are from any other player from the 2000's, 2010's

First, pele in the 62 WC only played 1 single game so even if he wasnt in the Brazil Nation Team, they would be able to conquer the trophy. Second, pele was never the best scorer in the WC not even in the so called "Great Brazilian National Team" in 1970. Third, pele lies about many of his records including the 1200 plus goals and the fact that he played in an era that football was not developed as it is today gives him some benefits including some myths about how we played at that time.

    • What? You are acting as if pele was transported from 2010 into 1960, pele had no advantage over the players, it was pure skill which made him dominate. Also give any great player from the 60's proper equipment and conditioning and they are just as good as players today if not better, as humans have not advanced only technology, i can comfortably say Bobby Moore or beckenbauer > ramos, because just from footage and performance a lone they have far greater positional awarness and talent then Ramos, who has as much awarness as a donkey on ice skates. Not to mention the fact dominating an older era takes far more talent and skill then today, due to the fact there was no red card, shit pitches, shit boots, and shit heavier ball. If you think its easier to stay consistent and dominate with no diet plans, conditioning or red card, then you are heavily mistaken. Also Pele was a greater athlete then Ronaldo, he was far quicker than any player today, and his vertical jump was on par with michael jordans (41') compared to ronaldos jump at 30", so peles athletic ability is good enough to play in any era. Please stfu g.
