  • I saw Pele play in a friendly in England for Santos against Sheffield Wednesday in about 1973. Also in the Santos team were Edu and the goalkeeper, Felix, both in the 1970 World Cup winning squad. Now, even though Pele himself stated that George Best was a better player than himself, and even though I am a Manchester United fan and saw George Best play over a hundred times, and idolised him as a kid, I disagree with Pele. As soon as I saw Pele touch a football in real life, ten metres away from me, I knew in a flash that he was better than Best. He is, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest footballer that I ever saw. He was magnetic for leather...

All the kids wanted to see him and get his autograph. He was roughly handled by the Bulgarian defence and he missed the second game against Hungary. Against Portugal, he played in pain and after one brutal tackle, he hobbled down the touchline a virtual passenger. I was so close to the pitch that I could see the look of pain in his face. I never listen to those who underrate Pele or try to diminish him. He was the greatest.

We could argue if he was the best or not, we can compare him to Maradona, but saying "Pelé was a fraud" is a crime against football and should be punishable by law. He did 50 years ago some of the plays that the best players of today days are praised for, and he played during a time in which there were very little technical advances in the design of footballers' equipment, so it was all natural born skills. Pelé is definitely a Legend.

First of all you said that most of footballing greats say messi is the best but the fact is that none of them has watched Pele play, you just completely disregarded the people who call Pele the greatest as old timers but if you really want to get the best perspective then you have to take the opinions of people who has watched both Messi and Pele play during their lifetime. Most of these people will say Pele was better, if you don't believe me then watch this video named "100 people talk about Pelé". Two of the things you said in these long comment contradicts each other. First you said Pele's achievements with the national team are underwhelming because he always played in the 'stacked team' ok but then later in your comment you said that Pelé never played in europe thus makes his club career not so great but you didn't realise the fact that almost all of his national teammates played against him on the club level in brazil. Which made the level of competition in brazil very good.

    • @L'existence Précède L'essence. Va te faire foutre. You do not play, and it shows. Let's begin with what the best players say..it's Pele all say bar one Lionel Messi, a player with no right and barely any headed goals. He keeps silent not because he has anything to match with Pele, but because by hiding he hopes to accumulate something with which to challenge Pele's achievements. What's to hide?! Why the silence? How long to wait?! Let's move to eras. Last week I saw Messi beg a penalty because a keeper's hand unintentionally touched his face. In Pele's era as pointed out in this balanced presentation, Pele was fouled 4x more than the most fouled currently, no cards, no subs. As for conditions, I've played in snow and waterlogged pitches, professionals refuse to play on now. Pele could play in any era,how many could play in his? Conditioning merely brings out the best in players. Current conditioning akin to the conditioning boxers of Pele's era undertook for 15 rounds, as opposed to today's 12. Just as no boxer today equals Sugar Ray Robinson, no player today equals Pele. To equal Pele a player needs a heavy shot in the three shooting techniques, with either foot. A player needs impeccable heading ability, chest, thighs, heels and ability to self-correct following impacts and challenges. A player needs improvisational abilities that bring new possibilities into football equal to what Pele brought. One-twos played off opponents? Only Pele ever did it..and so on. The arguments against Pele began with the appearance of Cruyff. Notwithstanding Cruyff playing in teams equally talented as any Pele starred in, Cruyff was the first to acknowledge who was better. Cruyff did have two good feet and was great in the air, played in the category of De Stefano and Zidane..all three better than Messi. The arguments then shifted to Maradona, a single-footed maestro of which many are from South America. Maradona again acknowledged who was better but so did both Argentine World Cup winning managers. Pele at 17 in a World Cup winning squad, Maradona at 17 ,not. Pele at 21 in a virtually unchanged squad 4yrs later, as was Maradona. One squad good enough to retain title without it's talisman, the other unable to retain title with its talisman; Maradona to the 86 team what Garrincha was to the 62 team. The crux of my argument is a thing only players understand: Maradona and Messi benefitting from low centres of gravity. Pele the only player ever able to change centre of gravity during play. In the 2nd leg of the World Club Cup against Benfica, Pele's 2nd goal was of this quality. He did the same in the World Cup earlier that year in his unsurpassed goal (in my opinion) vs Mexico. This goal is the only goal you will ever see, scored by a player from standstill, going through two lines of four on a diagonal run directly towards goal. Messi could not score such a goal. R9 would have needed another distracting runner and Maradona scored his greatest goals against broken defences following turnover ball. Pele had the Di Stefano AND Maradona category skillsets, plus the pace and power of Mbappe. I believe your intention was to muddy the waters through which the greatest are evaluated. What betrays you is your own playing experience. To score a goal among the finest of Pele's is the pinnacle of any player's career, not so Messi. Messi could not complete the hattrick Pele scored in 58 vs France: the ball he received on his thigh and transferred to shoot, is the most difficult to convert as the player must rise with the ball to kill it. All this is lost on you because you've never had to execute such technique..such never even entered your head. But why are we debating Pele's technique when those able to thwart such became World renowned as a result? Bobby Moore thwarted Pele in 70, and is rightly considered the greatest England defender as a result. Gordon Banks saved the perfect header..Why use mealy-mouthed arguments leading nowhere when the pinnacle of Pele bars your path in every direction? If you were doing so out of a sense of injustice, you might argue against the imponderables touched upon in this presentation, but you don't. Your mud is composed of denigration, delegitimisation and denial. Is Messi's left better than Pele's left? No, is his right anywhere near Pele's right? No. Was Messi at 17 better than Pele at 17? No. Has Messi played in teams as talented as Santos or Brazil? Yes. Was 2006 Argentina elevated by Messi vs Germany? No. Was Messi able to win Champion's League minus Xavi and Iniesta? No. There you have the answer to your nonsense! Such are the situations fate reserves for those contending to be the best. Messi entered World Cup folklore against Serbia alongside a stellar team in 2006. 16 years later he still strives to make good his promise.. The intervening years a post-Zidane interregnum. Now the baton has passed to Mbappe or maybe another will emerge in Qatar, but none will surmount the insursurmountable Pele, as the pinnacle of footballing possibilities. I'll leave you with this footage. kzhead.info/sun/Z5mxgaemqqN5eaM/bejne.html Not quite La Battalia Bonbonera of '69, but sufficient for Santos to number among teams refusing to contest this trophy. Pele won this trophy in the teeth of hostility. Could the man who's face was last week touched, brave such a field? No. And that is why he cannot compare with Pele. Enjoy! kzhead.info/sun/Z5mxgaemqqN5eaM/bejne.html

  • I had always thought George Best was the best player in the world. After I had the fortune to witness Pepe’s greatness during a friendly game played by Santos against Newcastle on June 4, 1972 in Hong Kong. Newcastle led 2-1 in the first half but Pele scored 3 fantastic goals in the second half to win the game. One of the goals was the best goal I have ever seen. Pele received the ball in the midfield from a overhead pass, he ran toward Newcastle’s goal touching the ball 7 times by his head, chest, thigh and feet while he ran passed 3 players and the ball never touched the ground and scored with a volley. He was like a magician performing acrobatics in full speed. There was a movie that came out and replayed that play 7 times. I kept going back to the theater to watch that play. I wish somebody had that movie or video to show Pele’s skills. He truly is the king and the best.

  • "The more the game was difficult, the more Pele asked for the ball and played even better" - Tostão. Pelé's biggest matches were the ones he was challenged: Santos vs Botafogo-SP, Pelé scored 8 goals and during the match, the opponents asked Pelé to stop, as they were feeling humiliated, but Pelé replied that he would detonate Botafogo-SP, this because in the previous game, Botafogo-SP won Santos and at the end of the game, Botafogo-SP mocked Santos on the field. In 1959, Pelé scored his greatest goal, the goal of Rua Javari, and invented the air punch. This happened because the opposing crowd challenged Pelé, who then scored his biggest goal, and celebrated with a punch in the air, fighting and cursing the opposing crowd. In 1962, Pelé played his biggest game in Europe, because Benfica looked down on Santos……etc. Pele's history and personality are like this, when challenged, Pele played even better. Before the 1958 World Cup, in the game against Corinthians, Pelé suffered a knee injury, Pelé swore that as long as he played, Corinthians would never be champions, Corinthians went 11 years without beating Santos and was only champion when Pelé retired.

  • The offside rule in Pelé's era was indeed more restrictive than the current one. But it's not because in Pelé's era, you had to have two players in front of you, while "today is only one". No, it's still two. The reason why the rule was harsher is because any offside player, even if not participating at all, could still cause a whole play to be ruled out as offside. I'll give you an example using Milan 5-0 Real Madrid in 1988/89 UCL semifinals, second leg. Real Madrid had over 20 offsides in that game, and the legendary Sacchi's Milan team showed total mastery of how to exploit the offside rule back then to its limits. Look at 24:00 of the video below. kzhead.info/sun/h5qLYJFwiqtva4E/bejne.html Also, same line was offside, not onside as it is stated in the current rule.

But it's controversy actually makes it more fun to watch. There's gonna be lifetime bantering between fans. Lots of what ifs and if onlys. My comment might be off topic but I don't mean to disagree to anything you said. Cheers.

Like even in same line of 2 nd last would be considered offside during 1970 and even the person who is in offside and even though he is not involved in playing would be considered offside for whole team. • "So, Pele played against weak opposition on the domestic Brazilian League"........... This is BY FAR, the worst argument against Pele, simply because state-level tournaments in Brasil, throughout the 50s, 60s, and even late 80s were not weak, on the contrary, in fact, some of them (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul) were very strong. Even stronger than the national championship. First of all, Brazilian football was much stronger then, since almost all Brazilian players would remain in the country. Imagine if Neymar, Vinicius Jr., Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus, , Thiago Silva played domestic. The 1958 team? All of them played locally. 1962 team? 1970 team? 1950 second place team? Yeah, you got it. And I'm not talking only about first class players in Spain, England, Germany or Italy.Those were playin on the big four from Sâo Paulo or the big four from Rio de Janeiro. Imagine if the hundreds of brazilian players in Portugal, Ukraine, Japan, Turkey, Russia were playing in Brazil. That was the situation until late 80s. Out local tournaments and clubs were very strong. Our “second rate” teams were filled with players who would be playing today at médium level teams in Europe. And please, I beg you: find some statistics about Brazilian teams playing against European teams from that era. The great Real Madrid? Yes, beaten many times by different teams. AC Milan? Benfica? Yes, all of them. It's also important to notice that Brazil is a huge continental country. There wasn't a national organized tournament until late 60's. State level tournaments were by far the most important events. It must be said that some of Brazilian states are as big as most of European Countries, but football is historically centered on a few of those states. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were the main ones, with Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul on close second. In the 1958 team there were 10 players from São Paulo (from 5 different teams), and 12 players from Rio (from 5 different teams). 1962 had 13 from 4 different teams from São Paulo. 1970 team had 11 players from Sâo Paulo (from 5 different teams); If you take a list of teams with most National Champions from the 60's until now, first, second, fourth and fifth places are teams from São Paulo - Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians and São Paulo FC. All of them, by the way, are also multiple Copa Libertadores Champions. Not to mention medium level teams with multiple second place and third place national honours like Portuguesa, Ponte Preta and Guarany (1978 national champion), that were also playing on São Paulo. Teams from São Paulo have more National Trophies than teams from all the other states combined. Those were the teams Pele was playing against. So, HOW, HOW, HOW can one say that the São Paulo State was not a very strong Tournament, with FOUR high level teams and a number of medium level teams?!?!?! And Pele was also playing in the “Rio-São Paulo” tournament, with those four best teams from Sâo Paulo AND the four best teams from Rio de Janeiro It was strong! Pele was playing against some of the best! Pele's team, Santos, was playing against some of the world's best players, and beating some of Brazil's best teams. You can’t say that Pele just get 3 World Cups because of his world class team mates, and also say that teams with two or three of those same team mates (and Other very good players) were weak. What are you implying? That those 22 players in the World Cup were world class, but the rest of Brazilian players were bad? Well, it’s true that some teams were not that strong, but the same can be said about Almeria, or Granada, or Mallorca, or Fulham or Bournemouth. Messi or CR7 goals against them are not valid? Yes, Pele was playing against and with some of the best players in the world. And guess what? They unanimously say he was the best of them all.....by far. Nowadays, people forget this, cause the National Tournament is well established, but simply put. State-level Tournaments WERE the most important tournaments throughout the 50's till the 70's. And you know what? THE SAME IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN EUROPE. Imagine this: São Paulo is roughly the size of the UK and has/had 4 high-level teams, Minas Gerais, with two high-level teams, is the size of Spain, Rio has/have 4 high-level teams, Rio Grande do Sul have/has 2, and so on. Those states had very strong state-level championships. One day, they decided to create a strong National Tournament and, little by little, those strong state tournaments begin to shrink. 40 years later, we are calling them "farmer's league" Well, Spain has 2 (maybe 3) strong teams; England has 4, Germany has 2, Italy I don't know anymore, 2 or 3. There are always plans for a Europe League, with all of them. Imagine if little by little they begin to abandon the domestic league in favor of this new continental one. 40 years from now, there will be people saying that Messi or Ronaldo or Muller played in a farmer´s league. Now, let’s talk about the Brazilian National Championship. In Pele times, as I said, it was not the most important tournament. It would be a knockout competition with just three or four games to the title. It was not until 1971 that Brazil would have a proper National League. So, if you get Pele’s goal average from these 3 or 4 games a year in his prime and 20 games a year when he was over 30, his average wouldn’t be that impressive; but that is the same as measuring CR7 career for his Years in Juventus. Finally, ”friendly games” didn’t have the same status then as they have now. Football wasn’t the same. Santos actually quit three libertadores to play these so called ”friendly games” including against Real Madrid and Barcelona, Inter Milan, Benfica, AC Milan, Juventus,River Plate, Boca Juniors, with their legendary players and he had the same goal average (0.92, 0.94) in ”unofficial games”. Those were not summer cup games.

It's wild that Europeans downplay South American players when their best clubs bring them all on their teams and they are usually the best players. Especially the case for Brazil. Now put all the best Brazilian players and make them all play in Brazilian clubs then ofc the competition was incredible. It's incredibly annoying seeing so many people trying to downplay Pele.

    • @@sky3down367 Pelé didn't invent goals. In Pelé's era, official goals wasn't really a well-established concept, and even competitions like UCL and Libertadores (the south-american equivalent to the UCL) were still very young. Friendlies and unofficial competition could be valuable, and many of Pelé's goals in "friendlies" are against far stronger opposition than some of his official goals (there were weak teams in Brazil and in São Paulo's state championship, of course, like there are weak teams in each league today, but Pelé's stats and performances against pretty much every great team you can think of from football back then are also fantastic, he stat-padded against EVERYONE!). Pelé played against the entire european elite, and Santos, Pelé's club, actually abdicated from playing Libertadores after 1964 for the rest of decade because international tours were much more lucrative! The video fumbles in two things though: 1-Jairzinho wasn't the top-scorer in the 1970 World Cup. He was Brazil's top-scorer, with 7 goals in 6 games, and also scoring in every match (a feat no one has repeated since). But Gerd Müller was the top-scorer of the competition, with 10 goals. 2-The offside rule in Pelé's era was indeed more restrictive than the current one. If anyone wants to know more details, and check out themselves Pelé's numbers against european teams, and even more detailed research on Pelé's career, you can't miss out on this Twitter page. An insane amount of research. mobile.twitter.com/selecaotalk/status/1251863371168788485 Also, check out Bella Kona's channel. By far the biggest KZhead channel of Pelé footage. Let's not forget, but people sadly forget, that Pelé was truly an amazing ATHLETE! He helped revolutionize the sport, and he was insanely perfectionist in how well he took care of his health and training. He was physically and genetically privileged, could run 100 meters in less than 11 seconds, and was a true freak of nature overall. At his peak, mainly in the early to mid-60s, a ruthless competitive machine of 100% objectivity and insane skills that could even bulldoze past defenders in strong physical duels if necessary. More details on Pelé's amazing athletic atributes here. mobile.twitter.com/SelecaoTalk/status/1251890364207771650 And don't forget that Brazil won three World Cups in 12 years, and everyone in those teams was playing for a brazilian club! Overall, there can be zero doubt that Pelé is indeed a GOAT of this sport. I won't discuss here if he is greater than Messi or not, as I don't think there can be an absolute GOAT. But there can be a GOAT category, and Pelé and Messi are undoubtedly there, on the exact same tier. They should be in any Top 3 of greatest players in football history! I hope someday that all the ignorance and bullshit regarding Pelé that is still being spread online can finally stop. It's so, so unfair and disrespectful. I also recommend this Michael Cox article from The Guardian, though he makes mistakes regarding the brazilian state championships. Brazil wasn’t/is broken down in four regions, each state had/has its championship, but the clubs from the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states concentrated the vast majority of the talent, and there was even a Rio-São Paulo tournament as well. The big exception to the "rule" of talent being concentrated in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro's clubs was Cruzeiro from the state of Minas Gerais, they won Taça Brasil in 1966 (there wasn't a brazilian league per se back then, Brazil's size, poor infra-structure and logistics made that impossible, so Taça Brasil was the closest to that, it was a very short KO tournament), beating Pelé's Santos in the finals in truly legendary fashion (6-2 in the first leg, 3-2 in the second), ending Santos' hegemony of five titles of Taça Brasil in a row. Coming back to the article though, Michael Cox is spot-on when it comes to the many unfair complaints thrown at Pelé, and also how the contexts of different eras can be so wildly different that stats' comparisons are ultimately unfair. theathletic.com/3185136/2022/03/16/individual-scoring-records-which-goals-count-who-on-earth-is-bican-and-what-about-pele/ The article is behind a paywall, so I'll quote the most important points. "Let’s start with Pele. In recent years, his goalscoring record has come to be mocked for various reasons, in part because his figure of 1,279 includes matches scored in youth matches, state competition matches and friendlies. Few of those goals were scored in youth competitions. It’s worth remembering that Pele was playing in Santos’ first team by the age of 15 and for Brazil by the age of 17. The concept of “friendlies” was, in the 1960s, somewhat different from today. Pele was the world’s greatest player, Santos were often regarded as the world’s greatest side, and those tour matches of Europe and Africa were taken extremely seriously by Santos and their opponents. For example, in Athens in 1961, Olympiakos defeated Pele’s Santos 2-1 - the Brazilian side’s first loss in a 13-game European tour. It is considered a victory of such importance that it features in the club anthem: “Everyone trembles at the very sound of your name / Pele and Santos still remember your name”, it proclaims. This is a club boasting 46 league titles and 28 Greek Cups, yet a victory in a “friendly” remains its most celebrated win. Some of the most famous matches of this era were friendlies - take Hungary’s win over England at Wembley in 1953, or Wolverhampton Wanderers’ famous 3-2 victory over Honved a year later. It’s not unreasonable for Pele to count those goals. Equally, since club friendlies in the modern era aren’t considered so prestigious, it would seem less understandable if Ronaldo or Lionel Messi’s goals in those games counted, and therefore for consistency, none are counted in “official” records. That’s all fair enough but it’s not like Pele is attempting to claim goals scored in his back garden. It’s also worth questioning why it is universally accepted that goals in international friendlies do count, but goals in club friendlies do not. Many of Pele’s goals in club friendlies will have been scored in much more competitive situations than, for example, Ronaldo’s friendly goals against Andorra, Luxembourg and Estonia."

Also, you really either didn't read or straight-up ignored all I said in my comment, and the links I shared. Santos actively boycotted most of the Libertadores editions from the 60s, because it was far more lucrative to the club to play friendlies across the world. Back then, official games and tournaments weren't as well defined today, and the calendary had less games too. So, teams played friendlies that were taken very seriously. Some of the biggest games of that era were friendlies actually, like Hungary's historical 6-3 win against England at Wembley in 1953. All games featuring Pelé's Santos made stadiums across the world be fully crowded, and everyone wanted the bragging rights of beating Pelé, and everyone took the games very seriously. You can't look at the past with the eyes of the present, you have to understand the context of the era, things were different. In one of the links I shared, there are examples of strong teams Pelé played against across the world, and there is also a good video in KZhead called Pelé vs. Europe. Santos faced Eusébio's Benfica in 1966, and won by 4-0. Santos had already faced Benfica before, and in an official competition: the 1962 Intercontinental Cup. Santos beat Benfica by 5-2 at Benfica's home, with Pelé scoring a hat-trick and one assist. In 1959, Santos played a friendly against Real Madrid, and lost by 5-3, with Pelé scoring two goals. And the list goes on. You really should check out the video made by Daily Dose Football regarding Pelé. And please, read my first comment again, and this link below too, debunking all bullshit regarding Pelé, and also talking about Pelé's amazing athletic atributes, and how perhaps no other player did as much as Pelé in changing the sport and make it the global phenomenon it is. Pelé was the Messi of his era. He was already seen as the GOAT. And the far lesser globalization also made Pelé far harder to watching than Messi nowadays, so everyone wanted to see Pelé whenever they could, wherever he went. Everyone kissed where he stepped, he was worshipped like a god, and was a global celebrity that transcended the sport. • I believe that the sport pele was in was totally to modern football. Let me explain, pele wasnt the fastest nor the most skilled, nor the most precise, but he was good enough due to his durability, and that is one trait modern footballers dont have very developed. You could have messi skills, but they would soon fade after 4 baseball style tackles and 3 kicks in your legs. When pele played there was no red or yellow card, defenders tackled you without piety. Thats the secret, pele played in a more crude, rudimentary, rugbyish sport.

  • There's no one ever like Pelé! All the facts, like you presenting here, that I already knew it, proves that. A total complete player, used both legs, heading the ball, chesting the ball, dribbling etc. No one is like him. Pelé was the best among the best. in 1958 he was the best, he saved Brazil against Wales. In 1970 he had the best moments of the tournament, like dribbling Uruguay goalie without touching the ball and someone trying for the first time in a world cup to score a goal from the other side of the field.

  • Great video, Pele was truly masterful, it's so sad his health is deteriorating. I have a slight correction. We still have the 2 player offside rule today, you are forgetting about the goalkeeper. In 1925 the rule was changed from a 3 player offside rule, to the 2 player offside rule we have today. So it was actually harder to score before 1925, but Pele always played in the 2 player offside rule era, so it's no different than today.

    @joelmatthews3453@joelmatthews3453 Жыл бұрын
    • But still rule was restrictive. Like even in same line of 2 nd last would be considered offside during 1970 and even the person who is in offside and even though he is not involved in playing would be considered offside for whole team. So goal scoring was still tough.
