It's difficult comparing eras, but I can say Maradona is the player that I enjoyed watching most of all. No one comes close for me.
I would say the most talented footballer of all time…he literally invented freestyle football.. What he did with Napoli and Argentina will perhaps never be duplicated again..

@NMA 55 NIDHIN JOBI Its called eyetest,that is the measurement for a players skill set.His biggest strength was in his dribbling ability and strength with or without the ball.Maradona,a prime messi and Brazilian Ronaldo are unmatchable in that category.However when analysing an all time great the criterion that is used in judging a players greatness are:1:Career, this includes the individual's overall team and personal achievements and accolades 2:Peak years,3:longevity and 4:Finally eyetest/skill set.Maradona is up there in terms of eyetest and partially in career coz apart from the wcup and the two league cups and an european cup he won with Napoli,his trophy haul is rather shallow compared to maybe what Messi and cr7 have achieved career wise.His longevity wasn't also that that good coz he played at his prime for around 3-4 years at his highest level n his peak year was in 1986.What maradona did in those 3-4 years at his prime,messi and cr7 have been doing consistently week in week out with countless almost unbreakable records for over 15 years running.That's unprecedented and that's where they beat maradona hands down.Even Pelle's longevity playing at the highest level was equally impressive but doesn't match to that of Messi n cr7. Thats why today they are being talked as arguably two of the greatest of all times.Therefore Messi and cr7 are up there when it comes to career,peak years and longevity.Messi scoring a record 91 calendar year goals and 73 goals in a single season is the true definition of a player at his highest peak in the history of the sport.

You didn't mention one thing. How much he was brutally fouled from start to finish of his career. There's not even another player close to the level of fouls he got, you can look at the stats of the world cup and he has like 3 times the foules of the second most fouled player.. We don't have the statistics of his club career but it would probably be even worst, in Spain it was a scandal. In Serie A it wasn't fun either, Van Basten had to retire at 28 because of it. People say today football is harder, I'd say today Van Basten scores 40 goals per year till he's like 45. Now Maradona's problems off the field surely did not depend by this but I'd say it's an important factor to analyze, without the warrior mentality he had he would've done nothing in that football

I'm 50 years old, and was lucky to be at the stadium many times to see Diego play. Without a doubt he was the most naturally skillfull and talented player in football history, basically because he wasn't an athlete, although he was very strong. And one thing that most people forget, is that he was addicted to cocaine since 22 years old to almost the rest of his life. And he really liked to party, though he was really professional training. Cocaine is a drug that, of course, does not improve your skills or physique, on the contrary. Even though all his achievements, Maradona once said "what a player I would have been if I was not a cocaine addict", and that's true. Another thing that you can see in interviews with team mates and rivals, is that he was a really good person, always helping other people, specially the weak. Rest in Peace Diego, the GOAT forever.

Yes but he was an attacking midfielder/second striker player, and not really a central midfielder like Xavi or something. Messi plays as an attacking midfielder or right winger often, and Ronaldo started as a wide midfielder, then became primarily a left winger.

An attacking mid mostly the number 10's and any winger is a forward in real football sense and not a striker.That is the difference between the two positions.That's why he wore the number 10 shirt and that makes him a forward too.What makes messi and cr7 special is the numbers they have been able to put up and not just in terms of goals but also assists.For instance do you know that messi actually is the highest assist player in the history of the sports and u add to the insane number of goals he has scored in his career despite not being a striker?There is no single forward or number 10 for that matter in the history of the sports who has been able to match those stats eclipsing even real number 9 strikers both of the modern game and even in the past.That's why they call him an Alien,completely out of this world.

You mention it yourself to an extent. Stats don't tell everything. It is mostly pointless to compare different eras, players, leagues and whatever else. Would Messi and Ronaldo have scored as much if they had been fouled as hard and as often as he was fouled? Would they have scored as much in Italy at the time, a league notorious for its focus on defense and where fewer goals were scored compared to other leagues? Would Messi have scored as many goals if he had played anywhere else than Barcelona (which probably was a match meade in heaven)? It is also nonsensical to compare Maradona's lack of success in European competitions with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo or are you honestly comparing Barcelona and Real Madrid of the 2010's with Napoli of the 80's?

Maradona is still better than Messi. Messi is too slow compared to Maradona. Maradona was a fast playmaker with extraordinary if not perfect techniques that after he stopped played, we could only see those techniques again with Ronaldinho and R9! The world and I will always put Dieguito Maradona above Messi.
