Kobe Bryant - 32 Pts, 5 Reb
Carmelo Anthony - 34 Pts, 9 Reb
Similar game, different ending for the Los Angeles Lakers. Their 24-year playoff dominance of the Denver Nuggets dissipated over the final 29 seconds of the fourth quarter in the second down-to-the-wire game in the Western Conference finals. Carmelo Anthony led all scorers with 34 points, recording his fifth straight 30-point game in the playoffs. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 32 points, moving past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for second all-time in Lakers playoff scoring. With 4,087 playoff points, he is 370 points shy of tying Jerry West for the top spot. Game 3 will be in Denver, where the Nuggets have won 16 straight games dating back to the regular season.

  • This era of basketball is the reason why I fell in love with the game. Love how the refs let them battle and play at a high level. Now they just soft. Call every petty foul.

    • Exactly. I love how the regular season had good games, but when the playoffs started, you seen just how much the intensity picked up. Everything was contested and nothing easy at the rim. I use to love that feeling the weekend the playoffs started and you knew you had a whole slate of games to watch.

  • As a young Nuggets fan watching this series in 2009 Kobe felt absolutely unstoppable. Looking back now and seeing how much Melo frustrated him gives me so much pleasure. Melo’s game will always be criminally underrated. These were epic duels that we are now unfortunately deprived of in todays quick whistle league.

As soon as Billups left Melo became a perennial first round exit again, just like he was before Billups That's why the Nuggets were 0-3 without Billups in 08/09 but the Nuggets were 9-7 without Carmelo in 08/09

    • I disagree. If you go back and look at the Magic-Lakers series, it could've easily been Los Angeles trailing 1-3. Orlando could've been up if Courtney Lee made that layup in Game 2; they won Game 3; Dwight Howard missed two crucial free throws in Game 4 that would've put the game away before Derek Fisher hit that 3 to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Magic organization also messed up by benching Rafer Alston and letting Jameer Nelson play.

  • KOBE MELO and MJ are the most box officed players of all time just look at kobe and Melos team, their teams are one of the worst teams in the NBA but look at the garden it's full no matter what same for the staples center and MJ is the greatest so he always brings a crowd

  • Can see why Artest was traded for in this series, aswell as the Boston one the following seasons. Ariza is fantastic getting up and down the floor and was becoming a very good peice but just doesnt have the strength to deal with these physical SF's like Melo, Pierce, Artest himself, Lebron etc

  • Reason kobe has a smoother jump shot and drives to basket compared to lebron melo and durant is because he has a decent cross over. Same with Curry. Cross gives him good space for the jump shot. Durant has crazy reach though.
