2008 Western Conference Finals Game 5, May 29, 2008 | After stealing game 4 in San Antonio, the Lakers entered game 5 looking to close out the reigning champion Spurs at home. The Lakers would fall behind big in the first half, similar to game 1. Also similar to game 1, the home team would make a comeback and it would be lead by Kobe Bryant. Following an 11 point first half, Kobe went into attack mode in the third quarter, scoring 11 points and igniting a Laker run that had them up 64-63 after three. The MVP took it a step further in the 4th quarter, erupting for 17 more points to further separate the Lakers from San Antonio to eventually win by a 100-92 score. Kobe finished with a series-high 39 points en route to the first Finals appearance by the Lakers in four years.

    • Cao Li That's what's stupid about the League MVP, it shouldn't go to the player who's team has the best record it should go to the most talented player in the NBA. And from 2004-2010 NOBODY was better than Kobe Bryant. And in 05-06 and 06-07 he was the Lakers. Dude averaged like 36 PPG and single handedly got them into the Playoffs.

      @dixonmixin10@dixonmixin109 жыл бұрын
    • dixonmixin10 I think it's all bacause of the trial he had. NBA has been against him since then, NBA wanted clean players as league's face, Kobe never had the same dickride as MJ or LBJ. He would have deserved at list 2 more, al list! Beyond that, also consider that in his prime years he had a terribal team, he wasted three years from 2005 to 2007 in which he was just unguardable.

    • Cao Li I see the argument you're trying to make, and you're right. Those Laker teams in the mid 00s would've been lottery teams without Kobe. He kept them competitive in the West, and couldn't be stopped. He was definitely the most VALUABLE player. The notion that the MVP should be the best player on the best team is one of the dumbest in any sport.

      @LuckyLefty92@LuckyLefty929 жыл бұрын
    • Cao Li I would say it's a bit of a stretch to say Rose was a weak MVP. He still averaged 25 and damn near 8. He won it more so because he had the numbers and his team overtook Lebron's as the best in the East. My opinion is, no matter the logic you look at it, Kobe should have several MVPs

    • New Breed The Cavs weren’t as good as the Celtics in 2010 or the Magic in 09 and got worked by both of them in the regular season, the Magic were stacked as were the Celtics. Mo played fucking awful in both playoff runs, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Look at Kobe’s teammates stats in the playoffs those 2 years and look at how weak the teams he played were.

The Spurs played great basketball this series but Kobe was too much of a problem for them. He dismantled this team piece by piece. Can’t believe I doubted the Lakers going into this series. Congrats on making the Hall of Fame Kobe, as all of us expected. There will never be another Kobe. Rip Mamba❤️

I never saw a 13th pick destroyed the whole team especially against the franchise player (1st pick Duncan) and having an all time head coach Popovich. I didn't see that coming from 1998 till 2008. What a turnaround baby!!

  • It's funny how Chris Paul stans claim he was "robbed" of 2008 MVP when Kobe led a lesser supporting cast to the best record in the West and while only having Pau Gasol for 1/3 of the season In hindsight, the 2008 WCF further proved that Kobe was far more deserving of MVP since he easily beat the same Spurs team that Chris Paul lost to with far less help on both offense and defense 2008 Lakers vs Spurs in WCF Pau Gasol - 13-10-4 on 45% FG - 73% FT Lamar Odom - 13-10-3 on 40% FG - 69% FT Jordan Farmar - 8-2-1 on 46/42/100 2008 Hornets vs Spurs in WCSF David West - 20-9-2-1-2 on 45% FG - 84% FT Peja Stojakovic - 13-5-0 on 45/48/93 Tyson Chandler - 9-10-1 on 74% FG - 57% FT and 2 BPG Chandler also was mainly responsible for Duncan's offensive struggles Chandler held Duncan to 15-13 on 42% compared to 24-16 on 46% Duncan shot 42.1% FG in the 2008 WCSF, the 3rd-worst FG% he shot in any series after the 2005 Finals and 2016 WCSF (Age 40 - last series of career) Duncan also had 2 points in the 4th quarter of Game 7 against the Hornets (on a foul by David West) and shot 0/4 in the 4th quarter when guarded by Chandler. CP3 had far, far, far more offensive and defensive help than Kobe, yet Kobe sent the same team that eliminated CP3 packing in a quick 5 games. Clear proof he was the vastly superior individual player and deserving MVP Had Chris Paul won the 2008 MVP, he would be the only MVP to never reach a Conference Finals (though now with him riding Harden's coattails, this likely won't last) further proving he was not deserving of the award.

Duncan wasn't nearly as integral to the Spurs' success as much as Kobe was to the Lakers'. This is clear, as Duncan was averaging very mild minutes (around 20 per game) and very mild stats in general for the majority of the 2nd half of his career.
