Had an acquaintance with a large fleet of military vehicles and trailers tragically pass away. I had discussed purchasing a M817 military dump truck from his collection before he passed. When we got there we found the dump truck engine was completely locked up. So I picked out another truck to try...
1970 XM818 6x6 tractor truck, with a Cummins 250 non turbo, 5 speed transmission, and a two speed transfer case.
Those things were built to last and run on anything in any condition if only things were still made to that quality of construction
Steve, with Multifuel Engines, You are correct. The M800 Series 5Ton was powered by a Cummins 250 naturally aspirated Diesel engine. It would ONLY run on Diesel.
Made in USA
En la actualidad las cosas son descartables. Esas máquinas son superiores.!!!! Excelencia en camiones.
@@patrickdaly5117It would run on any oil based fuel, It's a mechanical injection pump. As long as the fuel is filtered properly it will run just fine. It will also run on gasoline, but it will destroy the pump in a few minutes unlike the multifuel which would last a while longer
So sorry it had to end the way it did for those old workhorses. Thanks for giving them a fair shot before meeting the torch. I have a '77 M818. It will soldier on in the memory.!
I was in the Army back in the late 70s and early 80s. I drove one of those in Germany over 100,000 miles.
Love seeing old bits of kit getting a second chance!. Nice one!. Nuff said!. 🙂
Sad ending for sure. At least you got her running one last time.
I love your video without all the silly comedy and drama taking an hour of my time to watch. Keep up the good work
Dang man! That's horrible news. I loved it! Such a cool truck! Wow! I would drive that thing everywhere! My wife would kill me when I brought it home though. But when I resurrected it would be a good ole time!
It took a lot longer than i liked but i finally got to watch this video. Thank you for making it.
good job ! this Truck is very happy to day !
That’s one awesome piece of equipment!👍
I love these trucks. Damn pity they scrapped it.
Am I alone here now or does it seem these U-Tubers for the most don't come prepared? I mean if I'm going to drive a few hundred not to mention 50 miles to rescue some trucks, I would come with 3 times more batteries than this guy has, battery charger, generator, extra fuel, tools, air compressor, spare tires etc. SMH!
No! I think your right! It seems that a lot of these knuckleheads give little to no thought to being prepared ahead of time.
You're not the only one, but I think it could be done on purpose i.e., for content and as a challenge - we can d better than others and resurrect car with less tools/resources..
Yep. Bad prep.
HI R.R.R. ,, GREAT VIDEO!! ONE OF THE GREAT TRUCKS HARD WORKING ,,.. I AM A MILITARY ARMY GUY .. WE USED ALL KINDS OF TRUCKS AND JEEPS ,, LETS SEEEE PART TWO.. THX.
Man I would love to get my hands on one of those 21/2 tons love those drove them a lot in the army
Awesome job to. We'll done 👍 man. Keep up the good work for sure to no doubt about that one either.
Man id love that truck ! How cool is that !
Que bueno es ver a estos monstruos volver a la vida!!! Excelente trabajo amigo!! Felicitaciones
Put this truck in the war museum in Overloon and let the children climb on it.
Beautiful truck.
What a-machine! Love seeing old diesel engines in forces trucks stated. Can’t beat the old trucks to get going. Love it. 💯👍 HEY buddy” next time would you show us the engine please give us a tour of it. As this is what ALOT of us want to see. Regards 👍👍👍👍👍THUMBS UP👍👍👍👍👍
That was awesome 👍 man. I think that it would be awesome to get the rest of those things up.& Working again now to along with the other truck you just got running to.
I was amazed he finally got that one running 😂😆 he's a Mr obvious that guy is
Why hasn't he tried getting them in running state before this video did he feel like he had a buyer that was interested
Fun stuff. As far as the dump truck goes I hope you are able to get time to take another try. Some times you just need to step back regroup and make a new plan.
He commented the family didn’t wait and had a scrapper (or themselves) cut all of the trucks up.
Good luck with on your journey.& Progress with moving forward on to the next vehicle.& So on our there to brotherman.
Very nice. 👍🏻
Don't give up on the dump truck, it's not necessarily totally seized. Pour penetrating oil into each cylinder, leave overnight and then turn crank with a wrench on the end of the crankshaft before trying a battery start.
It is too late now, the family came in a scrapped everything shortly after this video. Wanted a quick paycheck. I just couldn't make it up soon enough to save this truck and the dump truck. I had pulled the injectors on the dump truck to see if it was hydro locked. I did pour some diesel down each cylinder, figuring exactly what you said might happen when I came back, and then I would buy both. But it was not meant to be.
You'll play hell turning this engine over with a wrench. It ain't a 6 cylinder gas car engine. It's most likely a 635 C.I. Continental multifuel.
@@clay1883The 5 tons had NHC855 Cummins whereas the 2.5 tons had the multifuels
Thank you to succeed to start the semi.
I driven the WW1 ww2 gas powered, the truth of that, I did serve in Korea and then went directly to Vietnam. 66-67-69 for a while I was assigned to a field until, combat engineers, roman plow teams, got hit, and put in a base camp group, Driving the 5 tons I really enjoyed doing that, not so much the 5 ton dumps, the duce and half I liked that truck, really like the sound of the engines. I did run a10 ton a few times, I wasn't so keen on them. The Army had some of the best toys going back in the day Blessings to you and yours
I can´t believe the family just scrapped it all up! Where is their sense of historic nostalgia? Had they given time and invested some cash it could go up for auction for 10x more than they got by scavanging the parts!😭😭😭😖😞
No thought short sighted NPC idiots(office slugs lkely) .
Great looking machine, hello from Thailand…
What a shame that truck got scrapped. It was ready to run, just needed some love.
Oh so sad that they were all scrapped. These trucks never get enough credit for what they went through and still fire after all those years.
I'm in the UK and love this stuff, I so want that truck! Liked and subbed 👌
is this how Russia is getting its army equipment? 😄
that truck looks bad ass. cool shape nice and big.
Good luck.🎉🎉🎉🎉
I've had three of these army trucks one multi-fuel the other was the Cummins diesel they are badass more fun than you can imagine took him to the fairgrounds and pulled the sled
They are damn good trucks for a lot of things, we took a 72’ and swapped the 250 for a 400 big cam, boy those Rockwell axles had no problem turning then, what a beast.
Very cool truck to save. So dope
Pretty sweet it's a winch truck. NHC-250 (non-turbo) engine is mostly gutless by today's standards, but sounds amazing at idle. Fun stuff to play with. I have a 1990 M925a2.
I know your pain, I had a tentative deal with a scrap dealer for a 30 something packard limousine, a Hudson, and a 57 Chevy Viking, he had a heart attack and while in the hospital his son decided to crush every vehicle in the yard. He had model t’s, a 1920’s dodge brothers truck, an reo I was trying to work into the deal, a few old autocar’s. Tons of other newer things like mustangs, cameros, and his personal stash of a dozen hemi’s.
You guys did pretty good! If you do another one of these either the 800 series like this or the 939 series 5 ton also with the 250 Cummins you can very easily bleed the fuel system by cracking the injector lines and there is a hand pump near the IP and you can presurize the entire injection system from there to purge any air out of it and it will start faster. This was pretty good though! Nice work.
What does IP stand for?
Injection pump
Excelente.!!! Muy buena máquina !!!
It’s horrific they scrapped those trucks. I know a guy in that general area that would have bought every one of them for more than scrap value and if they weren’t salvageable, keep all the parts for other truck owners. Very very sad.😢 Nice video otherwise. I thought it was gonna run away on you for a minute there.
They should be tared and feathered
非常浪費資源的國家,全球公認的
The world is in business today, yesterday it was built to last for ages and therefore to cement a name, today not to long last for the stomach is constantly craving for more new tastes and fills ..?.......?
Couldn't tell you how many of these 5 and 2 1/2 tons on ranges
Way to go..Thats a great Truck,,I found one like this on a farm in Wyoming,
Nice video 👍😊
I felt like I was in the field with the Army national guard or the regular army up in fort Lewis. Fond memories of Deuce and ass and 5 tons.
Oh wow, very cool!!!!! 👍👍
Badass toy to have! Good job bringing it back from a woody grave
Too bad it got cut up for scrap. Read the last line in the video.
Beutriful truck
Just enjoyed the sounds of that truck once more. I drove one during Nam.
I put a lot of miles on the M-818 when I was stationed in West Germany.
I like that Truck Army.
awwww so sad engine sounded awesome
I remember that day.
Alas. An ignominious end for a noble beast.
I would love to help get an old army truck to run.
How can someone let such a beautiful truck get in those conditions m? Unbelievable
The Tractors are my favorite because they can be any truck ya need... Need a tanker? Hitch up a tank trailer! Need dump truck?? Hitch up a dump trailer!! Need a flat bed??? Hitch up a flat bed trailer!!! Ect and so on it can be many trucks by simply changing trailers😎
que marca de camion es, podria de ser un White ?
Let me know where these are parked and in a couple of hours we'll have a rolling convoy!!!!
Unfortunately, in tiny pieces in China most likely. They all got scrapped.
boy does that motor sound great a trully big diesel sound
I remember the ones with a Cummins. They had NO leg room in the cab.
Классная техника!мощный дизайн,механики грамотные✌️
Me encantan estos videos
I agree that is sad. If you ever need a 1928 model A Ford to start i have some experience.
QUE SOM MARAVILHOSO
Cara adoro quando vcs ligam esses motores show
Please try to go start the one with the rear camo tarp on it
If this is filmed in the US, if thought all US Army trucks were left hand drive? Great video, best regards from Australia.
that part of the film appears to be reversed some how ? its a left hooker alright .
Njywe nemera abazungu cyane mufite ubwenge birashoboka ko Imana ari umuzungu
Did You make any attempt to see if the engine would turn before trying to start it? Did You check to see if there is water in the Oil? Did You check the coolant level? What is happening after You get it to run? In my experience with M series trucks they don't have extremely high mileage on them. These Cummins are capable of very high mileage and if you have intentions of using it you should prepare for the first start after sitting in the forest for a long time so as to minimise damage to moving parts.
I would Really Really like to have one of these or a Deuce and a half. Are they " practical" No, but they are Way cool.
Love this HL 1 game trucks
good to see these engines be bringing back to life and running same as they got out from fabrics
It seems the truck was abondoned without serious problems with its machine parts. Not too complicsted to restart.
Oh and I want to say one more thing thank you for not advertising the fact you need to drive it several hundred miles to get home for the drama effect at the risk of the safety of other people on the road.
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. I have gotten some trucks running and driven them home, but after an intense inspection, and only for a short distance. Anything else gets a thorough going over, or hauled. It isn't worth hurting someone.
Que buena amigos desde chile abrazos
Ya know - there seems no shortage of videos about vehicles/equip that were parked for different reasons. Perhaps some things are not worth fixing or returning to regular use.
A good portion of the ones I have run across are 'round-to-its', something sidelined the machine, and the owner was going to get around to fixing it. And never did. Many more were collected, and just never worked on. And more were left after the owner died. I agree, some of them were simply parked because parts are no longer available or it is worn out beyond economical repair. Some stuff passes into the Golden age, where it was a common item, then parked, more and more were disposed of, and now this one is only one of a handful left and now worth the effort to save. The real reason for all the videos on the subject is that they are popular, and get lots of views.
Hey looking for a old willy's jeep. I know it's been a year since this video but didn't know if you know of any???
I LIKE THOES ARMY TRUCKS 🚚
Esses mecânicos aí são foda. Os daqui conseguem desligar os que funcionam
Are you soaking the cylinders on the dump truck, I bet you could probably break it free.
it was a sad end for them
Pull all plugs and spray the hell out of it. And on the dump truck do the same thing just let the spray do its job give it day's. And mister let the glow plugs do their job your to fast slow down and did you change oil and grease and look good at all hose and brakes lines ?
Why is the picture backward the air cleaner is always on the left and exhaust on the right i bet thought I wouldn’t notice
I'm not surprised people have noticed. Somehow my camera recorded it in mirror image, but my editing software couldn't flip it. Good catch!
The FD logo on your t-shirt is backwards there Chief.
@@gtmtnbikr I am a fireman, but not the kind you're thinking. Look up N&W 611.
Its over John,nafing is over😁😁😁
What are you doing can you drive that truck you seem to be doing a lot of messing about with the tractor unit
Agreed these trucks were built &run &pull anything my dad drove a duece&half during ww2
OMG DAM!!!!!
Why is it that I've seen a lot of videos , especially those involving car or trucks , that the images are reversed?
After all that time and effort, you got it up and running only for you to see it get destroyed. ☹️
Video is reversed of it trying to move???
Family greed for money always seems to get in the way of another person's(family) lifelong dream of saving old American iron. that was alive. ready to live on so sad.
So the owner cit it up after you got it running? Didnt you buy it to secure it? Really?
The owner passed away, the family swooped in and cut everything up before I could get back to finish the job and haul it out of there. Dozens of trucks and trailers that were already spoken for. It is still an ongoing mess.
Why is the driveing on the wrong side of the truck
What a shame that jewel was mint when the Army sold it !
Is that the multifuel, Cummins or Cat engine? If it's the multifuel that engine cut off isn't an emergency stop. It's how you shut the engine down. No electronic shut off or really anything electronic on those trucks. Hence why they're generally so reliable.
M809 series 5 tons had the NHC 250 cummins engines only. The older M39 series 5 tons you could get the LDS465 multifuel, 6602 gas, or Mack engine. This one is an M818 and has the NHC 250 Cummins, hence the emergency fuel shutoff if the electric fuel shutoff fails.
Who would have thought that charging your batteries before you used them could make a difference? 🙄🙄🙄 Geez!!
What's the deal with the backing up and moving forward??? Just get that old gal out where you can easier work on her!!! Good luck 🤞 by the way since she runs she'll be an excellent part's doner!!!👍👌😊😉😏
Just a question. Why did you flip the image sideways?
My camera did that for some reason, I couldn't figure out how to flip it in my editing software. I can now, but would have to pull it down and re-upload it, ruining the analytics.
Thats too bad you Didn't get the Truck. I really could use one like it also.
No prep no common sense ! Got lucky it ran😮
