'58 Ford Parked Over 50 Years Ago: Will It Run?
Can Davin and Jeff get this old Ford V-8 engine to fire up after a 50-year slumber? All evidence points to this car being off the road since 1963 (that's 60 years ago!). And it has been slowly sinking into the dirt in its current resting place since at least the mid-1970s. With a new battery, new spark plugs, fresh fuel, basic hand tools, and some good old-fashioned know-how, can your favorite engine builder and his new sidekick get this tired old 1958 Ford Country Sedan station wagon to start? Will it run??

Wagon REALLY needs to be a Hagerty shop project
It wants to live, and it wouldn’t be right to not help it to get back on the road. Hopefully this won’t be the last time we see this old wagon in a Hagerty video.
@@CarlWithACamera Amen!!
At this point since they did get it running and since they did showcase their ability to get a long dead vehicle running even though they never drove it or even moved it from it's grave, they actually NEED to do this for more reasons than can be listed. If these guys DON'T get it so it can be returned to the roads, then they are not showing that a car such as this one can ever be returned to the road and that would be a serious letdown to their viewers. And to let down the viewers would be a dumber than dirt decision on their part
Would love to see that build
It sold for $472K
My favorite show. The best thing is no annoying music playing in the background.
Amen to the lack of music!
I'll go with no bad music.
I would ABSOLUTELY love to see this wagon in the shop and back to life and on the road again!!
Growing up, my dad was a car nut, amassed a sizable collection of 300+ cars, and 80% were in that car's condition. I spent weekend after weekend watching and helping him do exactly what you did right there. I think that's why these are my favorite types of videos, and why still to this day (my father is long gone) I still cars from his collection running again. Thanks guys!
😄😄😄
Вы в США счастливчики, что можете владеть подобными авто. У нас их может купить только по цене квартиры. И обслуживать тоже очень дорого. Привет из России ✌
My dad was the same way
Тоже и в Болгарии... Я понимаю.
I'm still doin it. My brother and I used to race our 58 SW.
Just want to mention that Vice Grip Garage is one of the OGs for this kind of content, glad to see more people making these long form videos
It's been a dream of mine to see Derek and Davin join up for a project. Davin looking at specs while Derek grabs a Tonya Harding is something I hope to see someday
Looks like there can be at least two more episodes near this house
yes!
I was eye balling the thunderbird also. And there are keys! Lol
I think the man from Barn Find Hunter was here once as well. Lots of treasures.
Save the cars 🚘
@@lucasstiles8012 ....yes - Tom Cotter was out there a couple years ago - that is how these guys knew there were cars out there. I seem to recall that a women lived in the house, and her father had collected all those cars. I don't remember if she wanted to sell any of them or not.
Hey everyone this is Jeff. This was a remarkable day, still can’t believe it. I would love to make this old girl drive out of her last resting place. Please like these new videos!
Good job Jeff, don't give up on what you love to do!
I hope y'all do drive it out. I did that with a 59 Chevy panel truck that had been sitting in the woods for 32 years.
Drive it out! Drive it out! Drive it out!
is that an auto or manual?
i had a 59 country squire when i was 15. 332.2bbl. what a broad slide on those ole country gravel roads. but hey. a country squire.
Love this!! The guys work really well together and are happy getting this old girl running. This should be a permanent show with Jeff & Davin.
I admire their determination
Why is it everyone forgets how a carb works. Get a little chain saw gas for some upper cylinder lube, fill the float bowl thru the bowl vent, close the choke so it will have a rich mixture and be on high idle, squirt some down the bores and turn her over. Should run for 20-30 seconds. Done it many times, always works as long as the engine isn't mechanically trashed..
I started using this type of content as way of putting my 5 year old to sleep to which he initially referred to as "boring car videos." The other night I caught him staying up to watch one of Hagerty's time lapse engine rebuild videos to my surprise. He's chip off the old block. Thanks for the help steering him in the right direction. We love the content!
I approve of that great idea!
I like these videos
Never happened.
Please do a series on this car! Love to see it saved and driving!
This is perhaps the best piece of content this channel has ever produced
It's good to see Davin back. I was considering re-evaluating my insurance situation. Now I won't have to.
Seeing that little boy happiness spark again along with the car, so wholesome
I was 8 years old when that Ford was last registered! Back then my Dad drove a '59 Plymouth Suburban Station Wagon with the rear seat facing out the back.... Ah, the memories! Thanks for bringing the dead back!!
What a great job. That 332 in that car is a great engine.I have one in my 59 country squire..those guys are amazing. I hope someone will restore that car Long live old fords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did they do a update 🙄
My dream car. I’d give anything to have it. Love these wagons. The boxier the classier in my eyes. True works of art.
KZhead is a strange thing. I watch many Will It Starts and have for a few years. Finally they hook me up with a two and a half million subscriber channel for the first time. Way to go, YT... Just so happens I'm a wagon lover too... 🇬🇧👍
I truly love the 58 wagon it's really a piece of art
god idk what it is but the feeling of fixing up a car and getting it running, nothing can beat it
This is a nice car they are working on hope they come back for that Thunderbird behind it!
Welcome back Davin, you have been missed and a hearty welcome to Jeff as well. Awesome start to a series guys. Only car people can appreciate the excitement you guys experienced.
Glad to see Davin back on air. We've missed him.
I was celebrating and smiling as if I was there. With a little effort, I could've even smelled the fuel, old grease, old car interior humidity. Great job, guys.
So cool. My Dad had almost the exact car when we lived in Minneapolis (same colors, hub caps). Traded it in 1963 on a Falcon wagon when I was eight. Remember we would go camping and used a roof tent. Had some movies of us climbing ladder to get in. I still remember the white plastic knobs on controls when I would sit in driver's seat and pretend I was driving. Love this video
I was born in the front seat of a ’63 Falcon wagon. My parents made it as far as the hospital parking lot. My dad delivered me. He cut my cord with his pocket knife and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, lol.
Let's give around of applause to the starter😝
it is my humble opinion but after watching couple of other people videos about vintage cars mechanics, i think yours is most informative and very easy to watch not just for awe but also for context. I really liked it as I could actually learn something from lead actor/mechanic, I hope I wasn't only one who noticed/appreciated that and Hagerty will incorporate more of that type of video contents. I understand that its views that you are after so I hope my thumbs up and this post will be noted. All the best Hagerty team. Great content and looking forwards for more content like that.
You can't kill those '58 Fords!! I bought a '58 in 1969 for $25.00 and ran it for two years and sold it for $35.00. Good old days!
Hope to see this beauty rebuilt in a timelapse video 🕔🤩
Absolutely Vice Grip garage is the master at this game.. great video guys
But then he drives them away. Should have been 5 minutes longer when them seeing if it would try to move.
They forgot to mention the part of the go handle, but let's just pretend we didn't see that 🤣
I definitely would not mind having more of these two to watch, this was really fun!
Sometimes the trick with old Fords is to hold the gearshift all the up, because even in park it wont always start because of the safety lock out
The 50s Fords with automatics do not start in Park. Only in Neutral. I have no idea why they did that. For the 55 - 57 TBirds, the dealers sell an updated neutral safety switch that WILL allow it to start in park, like the later cars do.
@@novaseline4u By 1958 they were starting in park. I have 3 57's.
@@novaseline4u That ended on the '57 release.
I never looked twice at old wagons, except nomads but in the last 10 years I have seen some real cool wagons. I can't remember ever seeing one like that. You have alot of area to do custom paint and lots of room under the hood to put any motor you want. I can't believe I'm saying this but that's a pretty neat car.
I had had a 59 sedan.
back in the late 60's a friend had a 58 sedan and his dad had the wagon. great memories
Gawd, Davin, one of your best vids ever. Loved it. The success, the laughter. And a Ford that was built the year I was born! What's next for "Bessy"? That's what my grandfather called his '62 Ford Country sedan wagon! Thanks for your efforts for our enjoyment and rememberies!
I love it too and I'm new here. Is this channel based in Michigan by chance?
I have a 58 Ranch Wagon that looks very similar. I love how these motors just keep going.
That's a cool rig👍not my flavor but you hardly see machines like this anymore so I appreciate it
So now it's alive again you have to pull it home and get it roadworthy :)
Very impressive start for the 58 wagon. Have no idea where this is going. But, would love to see! Thank you for sharing! 👍
I'd really like to keep seeing more of this. It gives me motivation to try to keep my stuff running.
I find keeping cars running not very difficult, the hard part is to keep THE BODY from turning into Swiss Cheese after about 12yrs. I live in North Central Wisconsin, where the "road crews" don't spare road salt during Winter. The only vehicles that last up here are of the "sunny day only" variety. The "under body flush" at your local car wash can only help so much!
Try Zeibart.
Oh beautiful!!! I love those old american cars so much! There’s nowhere else cars like this were ever build!
Growing up in America I always thought cars from other countries were unique because I hadn't seen them. Eventually enough time and I realize the rest of the world kinda all built the same lil econoboxes back in time and to think of how many car companies America used to have creating giant luxurious land barges
Wow! Can’t believe that old girl started up! If anyone could get her to go it would be Jeff and Davin!! Can’t wait to see more of these two cranking over old engines and diagnosing the problems along the way. Looking forward to seeing which one they try next 🙂
Great work Davin and Jeff! Great to see the old gal roar back into life!
My 8 year old was yelling at you to put your foot on the break. His big sister took him Christmas shopping a month or so ago. When they came out to leave. His sister couldn't get the car started because she didn't release the safety feature by breaking. When their dad came to rescue, of course, It started right up. He was having a lot of fun at his sisters expense till she reminded him she may or may not give him a lift. Its fun to watch the two sides of his brain fight out teasing his sister vs. transportation. We can't believe you got it running! My boys have the biggest man crush on you guys. They have an old 78 ski-do snowmobile torn apart in the garage. I bought them the manual on it for Christmas. I play your videos to motivate them out there. I'm hoping they get it running by Feb so they can run it this winter. Your enthusiasm infects them. Can't ain't an option. Figure it out. And make sure the fire extinguisher is handy! Thanks to you for your motivational skills.
Those old FE engines were pretty dependable and started pretty easy.
Not an FE .
@@spaceghost8995 If its stock, it is an FE. First year in the wagon, if its a 58.
@@ChubbyJontheBartender I glanced at video wrong I had thought I saw distributor in back but it is in front. It's FE
You mean they weren't, (Fix....Or....Replace....Daily) ?
@@spaceghost8995 They still had the 292 available in '58, but this was the 1st year for the FE352 and that's what is in this wagon.
Hagerty finally getting in on the will it run videos
Thanks Davin for refreshing old memory. After watching this episode, I jumped to the 3 year old episode where you and Tom Cotter went barn find hunting. Thanks Hagerty, Tom and Davin.
Great video! I was smiling right along with you guys! Excellent job!
That’s great I love this type of video. I watch guys getting big trucks and heavy equipment running like this a lot and always enjoy the process.
Damn Davin!! Was beginning to think they buried you before the shop after the flat 6 rebuild. Good to see you Sir, and even BETTER to see you working on a car/engine. This car needs to be taken care of... Bring it back like you did the truck!! If not, I'll buy it!!
Of course it ran, it’s a 1960s ford V8, you can’t kill them. Nice work 👍
I'm thrilled at the sound of this. Being born in 57 it makes my heart sail! Thank you
At 9:59, the dashboard is absolutely beautiful. Those red lights and the gauge is something else! Absolutely love that design.
Love to see you guys bring back the good old days ALIVE awesome 👍 job
After watching a few other people's videos regarding the mechanics of old cars, in my humble opinion, yours is the most educational and convenient to watch-not just for context, but also for amazement. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely LOVE this start up! As well we had a 64 squire wagon when I first started realizing cars. In that early nostalgia I saw the 54s and fell in love. Just a blue collar dreamer here! Thanx
Great going, boys! Neat old car!😁👍🛠️⚒️
wow you guys are Amazing Techs.. I love these kind of videos thanks so much for your time in making this videos
There's something really cathartic about watching this. I'd love to see it come back to life properly!
I love these type of videos. Thanks for the grind.
Another great vid guy's. It's always fun to see if ya can get an engine to run after sitting. It's like you feel like you have brought it back to life. That yard has some great potential for so more of these episodes . Thanks for the vid.
Well done, chaps! I didn't expect to see Davin do this kind of job. Good to get out of the shop once in a while, maybe? Cheers.
I'm a 1958 model, and I still run. I think that's just a part of the great American automotive heritage of the time! They'll never make 'em that well again (I believe!) Thanks for this video guys! I remember wagons like this one really well, and I loved the classy old station wagons very early on! I have three siblings and that's how the Pastor (my dad, now 94) kept track of us four! Great memories!
Gentlemen that was so cool to watch you work on that 58 Ford wagon. And to not only get it to turn over but then to get it to idle . Was Awesome ! I hope to see you have that car in your garage and to see it get restored . That would be so Amazing. Thanks for sharing this with us . Bob S .
Between this and the recent videos from Fab Rats & Merlin's Old School Garage with getting the engine in a boat that was sunk under Lake Powell for 30 years working again, I'm dang impressed by how solid some of these engines are! Obviously it's not always the case but the fact that with not much work, Davin and Jeff were able to get this one running, and the same with the boat engine that Merlin fixed up, that's some seriously well-built engines!
What about vise grip garage?
@@revee1000 Never watched one of their videos, so I can't say anything about them. But neither this "restoration", nor, from thumbnails, Vice Grip Garage can hold a candle to the craziness of getting that boat engine working again, IN the original boat too. Regardless, my comment was NOT about promoting X or Y channel, it was about how well-built the motors themselves were.
I think Jeff had the magic touch with the stater switch 👍 cleaning a carb on the fly niccee.. can’t wait for the next vid.
Brings me way back to when guys could pop the hood, actually see the engine and have enough room to work. Now I know how Dr. Frankenstein felt when he said. "It's alive!" Great work men. Just great work. Thanks for taking me back.
what a potential gem of a find, kudos to you guys for making it work.
Wow - don't find many '58 Fords around. Definitely worth saving & restoring. 60 years off the road (last registered in '63), and you guys had here running. Beautiful! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
My dudes... this guy you visited for this car has a couple others that look to be nice projects and videos! Can we meet the person behind the cars, their story, why the cars got parked, etc? Can we see the rest get some love!?
Here's the Barn Find episode that features this location and someone connected to the owner: kzhead.info/sun/g7igYcx7paOLgIU/bejne.html
@@Hagerty Wow that was fast! I love this channel... John Camisa is the best but these good old boys are the kind I'd love to share a beer with! Thanks!
Mate, good to see you back. I love your content . All the best.
Been hanging out for some new stuff from Davin and crew - great to see this, plus lots of other interesting toys in the background
Nice work. Now, how about getting it on the road?
Glad to see you back. Hopefully you had a great holidays and you're ready to get back to some serious wrenching. Station wagon looks like it would be a blast
a medal for the patience ... good job!!!
One thing that constantly amazes me: The quality of American starters. Sits for 50 years, turns right over; seen it a hundred times. I saw a video a few years ago where a guy was trying to start a 1928 Franklin after 71 years off the road, and he beat that starter up for what seemed like hours and it never died. People commented more on the starter abuse than the car.
Love to see any old engine come to life, but those old FE V-8s were what I spent more time with, it seems, due to me owning so many older Ford pickups. The engine is either a 332cui, or a 352 cui engine, the only V-8 engines offered in 1958 on the wagons other than the 223 cui inline 6. Not easy to identify a 332 or 352 unless you have the displacement sticker still on the air cleaner. Many of the blocks had 352 cast into the front left side of the block, right below the head, next to the water pump, even though the engine was a 390cui.
*DAVIN!* About time you got back. I was starting to worry that Hagerty had forgotten "what brought them to the show" - i.e., you and Tom! All is right in Hagerty world again now, though. Great to see you all back and I like the concept of this series. *Hey Ben Woodworth?* Never got anything delivered that we emailed about a while back. Didyou forget me? - Ed on the Ridge
so I enjoy a old car, can it run after so many years. I have watched many hours of content, there are lots of folks who can get a classic running. This is the first one I have watched with a tree in the engine compartment. Respect brother, keep up the good work.
Love seeing these classics being brought back to life!
Very enjoyable guys. Has possibilities for restoration I'm thinking.
Years ago, I was in Guadalajara for my employer and saw a '58 Ford in the parking lot. As I approached it, I noticed it was a convertible - with 4 doors! They did their own version of a chop. No top, just wide open. 😅
If there's no top for it then technically it wasn't a convertible but a car with no roof. I'm trying to picture it in my head.
@@JimmyKraktov Just consider where it was.
I was born in 58 & I sound just like this in the morning when I wake up. You dudes put a smile on my face, thanks for the video.
Beautiful 😃 to see this old motor come back to life
really ought to drag that one out of there and see if you can make it road worthy!
gas goes in the carb, not on the leaves next to the carb.....😅 Great Car, love getting things like this running. Love all the giggles.... i know the feeling
Tha carb is just a messy eater, that's all. 😛
It's so awesome watching these old, forgotten engines roar back to life,.
What a beauty!
Nice! But are you taking it home and restoring it now?
This was awesome to watch. But man did it bother me with the tree still on the windshield lol. Hopefully you guys will get this back on the road. I love wagons!!!
Great job you guys. Well done. Cheers!!
That was flipping awesome man! That is one sweet ole car that is straight up screaming to be restored ! 😮❤️👍
Heyyy Davin's back and now he's doing revivals. I hope you make this a regular thing, after all there are a lot of young people doing it with way less experience and knowledge.
Kind of surprised you were using what looked like straight gas in the squeeze bottle. Running some 2-cycle mix really seems to help preventing the cylinders from getting washed down during those long cranks.
Yep, that, and if the plan was driving it if it ran, I wouldna run the engine, or even turned it over for more than 10 seconds Tops without at least a cheap oil and filter change, and some clean water ... a sudden "whap-whap-Whap(!)-BOOM(!!)" woulda been one of those unnecessary "Well, Damn, we shouldna tried that," moments. Still, excellent car find, and nice video too. I always thought that '58 Fairlanes (wagons too) were nice-looking cars.
Outstanding. You guys are wizards. Can't wait to see where this goes.
That Ford got you. Those 50s Fords will not start in Park. You have to shift it into Neutral. THEN it will start. Learned it the hard way when I picked up my basket case 57 TBird back in 1985. I'm at the 12 minute mark. Now I'll watch the rest and see if you catch it. :D
They will start in park with some assistance.
@@cliffmcsparran3390 They will if you install a modified neutral safety switch, like the ones sold for 2 seater TBirds. Otherwise - nope. With my TBird I went through the same steps as these guys did - until I read the owners manual. It clearly stated the transmission must be in neutral to start. Not park. Put the car in neutral, and then it turned over with the key. That said, Ford eventually changed their cars to start in park, but I do not know what year they made the change.
Ha this was awesome, so cool to hear that rig run after decades! Now lets see if you can move it hehehe
Did we see this property on Barn Find Hunter as well?
As a local I can say it is the same place. Lots of treasure there.
Yup!
Glad I finally finished watching this! I can't wait for more with these guys.
Love it! Can't believe it started...amazing!
This video was absolutely awesome. Please more of this!!!! Entertaining and informative!! Diesel, a rubber hose and a funnel work great to lube the cylinders.
