Repair BROKEN Bail Arm for CAT 637 Scraper | Part 2
This video is Part 2 of repairing a broken bail arm for a Caterpillar 637 Scraper wheel tractor. This is the bail arm on a twin drive push pull machine and had quite a bit of damage when it came into the workshop, it was completely broken in two parts, one of the ends was bent and the bushing position needs line boring. In this part 2 we complete the repair and show the step by step process to weld the hollow bar we machined in Part 1 to the bail arm. We also use our Sir Meccanica WS2 portable in-line boring and bore welding machine to repair the bushing position. The repair is completed by welding on the stop step and giving it a quick coat of CAT black paint.

In this video we are using:
- WIA Weldmatic 500i Welder
- Sir Meccanica WS2 Portable line boring machine

The Boring and Welding machine was anything but boring, I had no idea such tools existed ! Awesome to see all the different skills and knowledge used in the one job
23:00 So this is the new metal additive manufacturing (Metal 3D Printing) that everybody is talking about. Very high tech there, Aussie!
Perfect job, and a big thumbs up for being gentle with the arm when using the forklift, nice to see the arm not just "dumped" on the ground like some people would. Shows respect for the customers gear.
Also no need to beat up your surface of concrete dhop floor
That is the only loving this parts gets, once back on the machine it will live a tough life as why it need to be repaired.
You sure know what you’re doing. Have the right jigs and tools to get the job done and you seem so well organized and efficient in your work.
What I like in such video : it is not only gluing to pieces of iron. That’s analysis, understanding, integrating, preparing, welding, …. That’s not only one job…. And requires a lot of knowledges
That you could've acquired all these marvelous skills over the course of just one lifetime is amazing.

That boring machine/welder works like a hot damn. Imagine having to machine this on an HBM.

It's refreshing to see the outtakes! Yes we are human and it's fun to see. Thanks!!!
Your reference to pressure build up in the now sealed tube was stunning. The first few folks who suffered explosion would never have thought it possible. Some say “experience is the best teacher, but the most expensive “.
I'm a Mechanical Engineer and I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one! Compressed gas (air) in a tube that size and thickness? I would never have imagined the pressure could get that high just from heating! Does the tube rupture or the weld blow out?
would love to see a test on that.
@@philgrindle2741 could only be unexpected steam, not hot air.
@@alexjohnward I wouldn't think even shf could generate that much force but that's outside my area of hydraulics and pneumatics (only 40+ years)...
@@philgrindle2741 I also doubt that a steel "pipe" this thick could blow just because of heat-caused build-up pressure. Compressed gas steel cylinder operating under 150 atm/ bars (2200PSI) have walls about 15-20 mm thick (.6-.8 in). much less than this "cannon barrel" here. With thinner walled tubes/ pipes, especially ones with seams - yes, no doubt, bu this one...?
Hilarious when Homey gets some new toys to play with :-) And why do I want one of those boring/welding machines, I've no use for it, just know I want one.

Thank you so much for the camera shot of behind the mask so we can see what is going on. This channel is so interesting. Cheers from MN, USA.
This whole thing is so real. Real guy, real dog, real wife, definitely a real live working shop and no foolin... big stuff in capable hands and a do right mind. Great to see such work done by such a forge ahead professional... and honest, with the filming screw ups and awkward bits at the end. Cards face up. Love it.
This was a surprise, thanks. I'm glad you mentioned tubes blowing out from heat expanding the trapped air. I saw it happen once early in my career and never forgot it, it looked like an animal tried to claw it's way out from the inside, damn near gave the welder a heart attack. I always drilled a 1/8 hole somewhere in the tube I was welding and after it cooled sealed it with a quick tack. And just for all the experts it never caused a structural failure. Good video
I remember looking up some calculations on holes in pressure vessels and how much the hole reduces the strength of the entire structure. It was for things like pipes going into the side of a water storage tank, but the calcs extended to things like holes cut in concrete slabs (say for plumbing). Small holes made only a tiny theoretical difference in the reduction of strength. It wasnt until holes got to a really decent size that they started to reduce the strength of the vessel, and then the strength started to reduce dramatically as the hole size increased. So, I reckon the little hole you drilled didnt change things at all.
@@jellyfishbones0 I didn't mention in my comment what I was working on was roll cages and chassis for race cars and off road vehicles. Not actually pressure vessels or anything that carries fluids or gasses.
I like your dog. He always looks like he wants a big hug. "Come for the dog, stay for the machine work."

The whole process of building up the eye hole via welding, then resizing the rough surface to spec via the inside lathe is brilliant!
I saw the beginning of the job, and I thought, "Hmm, I'm not an expert in fabrication, but it seems like you'd need a jig to do that job properly.. Oh, wait, there's the jig." Good one. Lovely work.
Wow! It's Friday, now where did that week go......... Dam! It's only Tuesday! Thanks guys for the early upload.
From my point of view (Im only welding sheet metal up to 1,5 mm thickness) is really funny what you call a tack weld. 😄 Good job as always! 😊👍🏻
When you lit the torch you should have said “Now that’s a torch”. LoL
I knew Kurtis has super human strength! Did you see him grab that hot welder tip at the 23:35 mark? No tricks from the camera or editing. I'm telling you folks. Kurtis is just a beast! Lol. Another great job finished.
Nice blending of the music Karen throughout the video. Thanks for bringing us along.
I would have never thought of a to possibly exploding from welding. I'll keep that in mind if I am welding into that is enclosed on either side. Thanks so much Curtis. I look forward to your videos every Friday 😀

G'day Kurtis, Thanks for putting ""PART 2"" together , Was a nice little surprise for the faithful .. Very tidy work , with some class welds ... Another happy customer. Respect from Shellharbour
Hey "KnK", real nice to watch a pro at their best, and fun to watch you weld and fabricate too, good job Karen, i know it must be tough to follow Kurt with the video all day. Hood down lights on.
That was one hell of a project. I am guessing that the reason you had an alignment jig handy is because you have done a bunch of these before. The line boring part always amazes me..
On the alignment jig, it looks well used (rusty). Kurtis, this is not your first rodeo with these projects. 👍 Best wishes from the far North.
The "Portable" Line Boring tools are quite the tool. Nice work.
When things don't go right, you know it's going to be a good day! 😀😃🙂🙃😊
Thanks Kurtis and Karen for showing. Must be a common thing that they break as you have a jig setup for it.
New to the channel, several days. That jig is a great item. Must do a lot of these to have that laying around. Really enjoyed watching him work. The dog is the real star. Of course, thumbs up, mate!
I suspect the process of building that jig would be at least as interesting as this repair. Quite an exercise in being prepared! Actually if this is a relatively common job I wonder if the equipment owner sent over an intact arm along with the broken part the first time as a template?
@@daniellewis1789 sending an intact arm? Probably not, an intact arm would be installed on the machine if the machine was down. And if there was an intact arm as template it should be a new one considering a used one could be bend somewhat. I would ask for (schematic) drawing of exact measurements of the eyes on the machine, let the measurements compare to an operational machine as double check(or personally take the measurements on site if possible) and when you start building the jig youll go by the drawing and keeping everything square/in line.
The work is excellent but the editing is what makes the videos enjoyable. Well done.
You must get a lot of these jobs judging by the nice jig you set up. My late father was a machinist until he passed at 88. I swear he could see 1-1000th of an error just wearing his glasses. Great videos.

In the last vid I was about to ask how you ensure the position of everything after welding and then I seen the jig. Did you make the jig using a good part and do you make jigs and fixtures for any part you repair? Great work though, always a pleasure watching a master at work.

I’m surprised that you don’t drill a small vent hole in the new tube. You could weld it shut when you are finished!🇺🇸
Thanks for the Tuesday video, in lockdown here in NZ and I am already out of argoshield, still got plenty of electrodes so I can still do some welding at home. Cheeky ask but do we still still get a Friday video? haha
Cool that you have a rebuild jig for this. It must be a pretty frequently requested repair. It was neat watching the bent eye come back toward round, without cracking, thank you very much! This is a good example of why I'm hooked on this channel: you show where the broken bit lives, tell how it works (or not), tell why you're machining as you are...it's just addictive!
Hitting like immediately because you know when you know, outstanding engineering 👏
I must say that im surprised at how little amps/feed you use for those heavy welds. I used to work in a factory and even though I only welded "small" stuff, heaviest was some stainless tubing with 12mm walls, I still pushed 240 amps with 15m/min feed through my Kemppi welder.
Another job well done, even the paint job was spot on. Man hands"". Curtis you are nuttier than a squirrel turd. Lol. Great video guy's and pup.
