Making a BIG Hydraulic Cylinder Rod & Eye | Part 1
This video is part 1 of a job we did to make a new BIG hydraulic rod and eye for a Hitachi EX1200-6 Excavator bucket cylinder. The rod has a lot of scratches and the eye is completely torn off the rod and has fatigue so we are making a whole new cylinder rod and eye. This shows the step by step process to make the eye including machining, milling, drilling, facing & boring. We start with a 200mm chunk of steel plate and turn it into the hydraulic cylinder rod eye ready to be fit and welded on to the new rod that we make in Part 2!
** WATCH NEXT** Part 2: • Making a BIG Hydraulic...
In this video we are using:
- HMP-150T Hydraulic press
- TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- BM-63VE Milling machine
- Everising H-360HA horizontal bandsaw

I was a well traveled Mechanical Engineer going around the world repairing commercial gearboxes, mostly newspaper printing, mining, large vehicles etc. My neck broke and my fate was sealed so I was medically retired. Your videos allow me to experience what I have missed most in the world, my job. Thank you.
Shit mate sorry to hear that happened to you! Are you able to do some hobby work? Glad you can enjoy the videos thanks for watching
You know I tell people that since I can't work anymore myself because of medical issues, and I don't know about where you're from. But these folks think that I'm not right in my head for missing my work, personally I think they're not right in their's for thinking life is so grand when you can't work, and have to sit around bored outta your head with no real purpose in your life anymore. Glad to see I'm not alone in that sentiment, and I understand exactly how you feel. Btw, dam good work you do young man, your pop, and your grandfathers should be dam proud of the way you turned out. Yes Sir dam proud of you
@@timothymilam732 I can relate to your situation. I'm in radio broadcast electronics and in 2000 a ladder slipped with me on it and I crushed L1&2 in my back damaging my spinal cord. Fortunately I was in an ambulance in 10 minutes and operated on the next day by a trauma team of very competent surgeons and given a second chance. Everything is not right but with physio and care I returned to work for another 10 years before I was retired. I opened my own business doing contract engineering and had more work than I wanted until covid19 came along. Now it's emergency only and I could be bored out of my mind if I let it. Instead I've returned to my hobby of building a model traction engine that I started 40+ years ago. It'll keep my mind and hands busy when I'm not on the road. Keep the right attitude and take care of yourself. Who cares what others think. Keep standing. Covid19 doesn't like gravity. My theory anyway. Ron in Canada's banana belt.

@@timothymilam732 well said Sir......I feel the same way too
It may not seem like a lot, but I really appreciate you showing where the part is located on the vehicle. It gives the less mechanically inclined members of your audience (like me!) a better idea of what you’re working on and how it affects the operation as a whole. A wonderful video, and I look forward to more! ☺️
Hey mate, thanks to the missus for that she thought it would be a good idea and viewer feedback didn't disappoint. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers 😎👍
Absolutely agree. While I'm not among those unfamiliar with heavy machinery, it still helps to associate the peices we see you working on with what the whole thing is like on the vehicle.
Even for someone like me who runs equipment daily I appreciate it because one video was about a scraper pan roller and I don’t believe I would have figured out where it was on the machine without showing me
How the lathe cutting insert takes that smacking force over and over again without breaking is really amazing!
In the late '40s, the 50's, the '60s, and early '70s my Dad was a machinist. He worked for Curtis Wright Aircraft, Lockheed, and Aerojet. All that time I knew he was a machinist but I didn't know what a machinist actually did. Now watching you and Abom79 on youtube I see what his job was all those years. Thanks for the content, great job.
That's awesome glad you can get an idea of what he did back in the day!
I watch Abom79 too LoL He does great work with all manually operated machines. another good one is Inheritance Machining

I've had 40 years on excavators and you don't realise how much work goes into making these components. fantastic. your knowledge is incredible.
It looks like your safety officer has some executive meetings that he needs to attend. It is a good thing that he has instilled such an environment there that he can feel like he can slip away for a meeting or two and not worry about anyone getting hurt. Good on him and the thankless work he does.
Ok the dog is a star and he lives it well. You are a master of mechanics your knowledge and your know-how are impressive, I make a special dedication to the video technician. Hey mate this is a seriously good comment and we both appreciate it a lot! Glad you enjoy the videos it makes the effort worth while with comments like these. Cheers, Kurtis & The Missus
We can all get by with just the machining and problem solving but when you throw in comments from the Mrs and shots of Homeless it really puts everything into perspective. Thanks for the content!
Hey mate and thanks for the great comment, when we know viewers are enjoying the videos it makes it worthwhile! Cheers
It just amazes me that the bits aren't snapped off instantly when you start machining the outside of the eye from square to round. They must be absolutely insane hard metal.

How come the safety officer doesn't ever say "Where's your Gloves" Just saying; protect those instruments; from one tech to another

Greetings & Happy New Year! Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your videos. I appreciate the time you take to record, edit, augment (on-screen RPM, tool numbers, etc.) and post the videos of the projects you and your wife work on. Have to say that I love the outtakes because they provide balance to the professionalism and expertise you show while doing the actual work. I wish you both continued success.

I really enjoy seeing these little tricks you use to fix the workpiece in the maschine.
Awesome thanks for watching
I agree. When you first loaded the eye in the 4 jaw I wondered what you were thinking when you advanced the two "forward" jaws to the material and then put the two inserts in. I figured all that would do was push it out of the chuck. Then you welded them in and I saw the method of using the corner to actually drag it into the chuck. Very clever idea. I'll store that one away for reference.
Really enjoyed watching this! I welded and assembled thousands of cylinders and rods over a 5 year employment with a larger hydraulic cylinder manufacturer.
The closest I come to working in a workshop like yours is when I fire up the Ozito battery drill and yet its after midnight and I've only just finished watching this video. I'm hooked! And now I'm pissed off that that I'm going to have to wait for Part 2. I'm especially interested to see how you go about welding the rod to the Grade 350 mild steel eye. Great video. Hahaaa pretty sure the missus will think up something better for a future video 🤣
Very nicely done including the radius. That radius is not just eye candy, it tries to prevent pinpoint stresses from building up on the surface. For it to operate as intended, the finish and the transitions around that radius should be fairly smooth. I probably would have done the last finish for the round part using the button tool just to get that radius as smooth as possible.
Kurtis, I love watching all kinds of welding/machining channels. And not just the big stuff, even the smaller scale machine channels as well. One guy I recently found was Heritage Machining. The guy works as a 3d CAD operator during the day and his machine shop he inherited from his grandfather. He built a shop inside a pole barn (aka large shed) like whay youhave in Australia, except the condition of the shed/pole barn was less than ideal to use as it sat.
This channel is amazing, I'm not even in this line of work but I love these videos.
Hey mate glad you are enjoying the vids!
Jeez the safety officer really is a VIP (very important puppy).
hahaa he sure thinks so!
Honestly, I think the fame got a bit to his head.
To Karen… your video shots are outstanding. I don’t know if you’ve taken classes on this or if it is instinctual (I’ll bet the latter) but you place the camera in the right place at the right time. During the facing of the part, you had the camera perfect for those rainbow rays coming off the the oil on the face of the part. There are DPs that would DIE for a shot like this! You’re editing is excellent but more important, you know your audience and their threshold of watching real-time and when to get creative (slo-mo or time lapse) with just the right music track. I’ve worked with videographers in the past that this would go right over their heads. Kudos. [from a recently retired tech company instructional manager]
Always nice music to go with. A hard, complicated, risky challenge successfully met and completed... without wrecking any of the valuable tools needed to get the better of it. Really great to watch such a complicated process executed so skillfully.
