Mortal Kombat was one of the very first video games to get adapted into a Hollywood movie back in 1995 and along with movies like Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and Street Fighter, set the tone for video game movies being… not so great. Now, 26 years later, Hollywood is ready to breathe new life into the franchise and take a shot at the popular game franchise.
2021’s Mortal Kombat definitely raises some questions. Like why are we following this made-up Cole Young guy when there are about a hundred existing characters to choose from? How deep does this dragon-mark champion concept go exactly? Why did Cole go back to his family after he specifically left them to keep them safe? How exactly is Lord Raiden allowed to intervene? If death is just another portal and all these characters can come back, did any of this even matter?

I feel like it played to his fight style. Throughout the movie Cole showed that he can taking a beating. Alot. Like the whole movie. But he always gets back up so it makes sense that his arkana is a defensive power. Especially since the whole goal is protecting him and his family.

That's funny cause that's what they did with the recent animated movie and guess what, it was a tonne better than the film adaptation. Hell, it even had the same opening.
From what I've heard, they specifically avoided having Johnny Cage, cause having a new OC to replace the primary character of the series makes things "better" according to certain people who want to shove their OCs in various franchises. Which of course kinda makes the whole things bleh, especially since if I recall, Mortal Kombat wouldn't have happened without Johnny Cage, since the game was originally suppose to be a Jean-Claude Van Damme game with Johnny Cage originally suppose to be Jean-Claude Van Damme. But when the rights for that fell through, the repurposed things.

You know whats more tight? Removing one original beloved character, and debuff the main character from the game story (Liu Kang) and the yellow ninja gamers were so eager to see fight, so the new guy has to save him.

Shang Tsung looks like a little b*tch trying to act tough and Raiden looked like he was walking around with hemorrhoids, he looked THAT stiff and awkward. He might be the best champion who gets long age as a winner of the tournament. The only thing bothering me is the weird use of raiden’s transportation ability.
In the movie, Sub-Zero does mention a Shirai Ryu/Lin Kuei rivalry, but it's said so quick that one could forget about it
I got the impression that MK champions are essentially ageless and gather power over time. Hence Bi Han got an upgrade to Sub Zero with much stronger ice powers and Scorpion has the hellfire thing which basically seems like they ripped it off Ghost Rider.

It did kinda come off as Sonya being the protagonist of an entirely different MK movie that the inclusion of Cole made them skip. She actually made two rivals over the course of the film, and actually earned her power. That Cole ended up being the one to fight Mileena despite the film taking the time to set her up as a rival for Sonya, made it really weird.
