5 Things to Make Your Underpowered Honda More Fun to Drive
How do you make a slow car FUN to drive? In today's video, I explain 5 Things that made my underpowered 1999 Honda Civic Project more fun and enjoyable to drive!
The old saying is that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. In the case of slow Honda's...that depends. With the right mods, it's possible to make 90's Honda's (or any car for that matter) more fun to drive regardless of the power. The transformation that much of my budget Honda Civic has had, is in the driving experience. A well rounded car is much more fun than a car that does one thing in my opinion. Anyone can install a turbo or swap an engine in a Honda, but few people will focus on the details that make driving it more fun!
Lowering a Honda Civic and fitting wider wheels and tires is nothing new, but doing it (right) is a rare sight. Functional size and weight is often overlooked and can make a world of difference. Installing wider wheels will increase traction and the overall contact patch. Lowering the car on coilovers will improve handling and lower the center of gravity. Installing an aftermarket steering wheel into any car will (most likely) FEEL nicer. Swapping an S2000 steering wheel into my civic along with a weighted shiftknob and poly bushings made a HUGE difference. Remember, everything you touch makes the experience.
Installing aftermarket seats will improve the fun by holding you in better. Less body roll and much more focused driving position. One of the more expensive mods, but can still be done on a budget. Hondas can swap many seats including Integra seats, RSX seats, EP3 seats, Prelude seats, etc. Lastly, the cheapest mod is a CLEAN interior. This doesn't cost much and you'll have way more fun in a clean car than a filthy car. Less items clanking around and will again, feel better.
Coming from a person with an exhaust AND an intake on their underpowered honda, these other 5 things have proven to make MY driving experience more fun. Not saying they are a bad idea, but I would do these other 5 things any day. This stuff is all based on my own opinion and if you have a different one, leave a comment below!

This guy gets it. Screw all the flashy/noisy mods and just focus on the driving experience for once! A lost art.
Del Sol seats FTW!
Exhaust is worth it if you do it up right, mine has a magnaflow streetseries and it's the perfect balance. Usually costs more but is super worth it imo. One of my coworkers has a hyundai veloster with an ebay muffler on it and it's so loud it's ridiculous, I understand where you're coming from but if you do your research and spend enough it's one of the best car mods
@Randy Bobandy I got a spoon n1 sounds nice not to loud
It's just called driving a car, to its full extent, simple as that may seem, literally try it. Then fix it alot.

Aww guys. I know your pain. I hope you make it through.
Clean interior, probably the most legit improvements I’ve ever heard. It really does make you feel better when you get into a vehicle that you enjoy driving.
Improves my mood
exactly many people forget they will be more time inside the car than outside
I just really deep cleaned my car for the first time since I got it and i felt like i was driving it for the first time again. Can't explain it but it's just a thing.
1 coilovers 2 wide wheels/tires 3 steering wheel/shift knob 4 seats 5 clean interior

Keeping my car clean is literally the most important thing to me, I hate driving it when it’s dirty lol
Same here. I’ll let it get bad from time to time but not for long
Then you are a germophobe lol
Agreed bro!!
The most I can tolerate my car being dirty is having some dust on the dash and soil on the carpets when it's the rainy season or during a week where I'm active on my mountain bike. I absolutely despise food debris in my car that turns into mold and stains. This isn't being a germophobe, this is being a hygienic normal human being.
mines unregistered and unplated still because i just bought it the other day. so the only place i can drive it is on gravel roads where the snows melted off and super wet. its pretty muddy right now.
You've got good taste man! Great content. Appreciate how you recommend upgrades while keeping the looks subtle. Your car is probably one of the cleanest Hondas I've seen.
This video is so on point. - Clean Interior -The difference between someone who enjoys driving and someone who goes from point a to b. - Yonaka Exhaust - Had to replay my OEM due to rust. Went with this option. Its PERFECT. I cant recommend enough.
imagine doing all of this to your civic and then getting it stolen. Don't forget, 2-way alarm first!
I got the Demon V2 you set a "password" to start the car.
This comment hit a little to close to the heart...
And it’s really depends on where you live!!! Right around where I live , there’s definitely nobody around 😂😂😂😂
Im planning on buying a Honda Civic as a first car, is it common for them to get stolen in the US?
@@TheWaffleston I have an EK hatch, theft doesn't happen frequently but it happens enough to keep it in mind. I keep mine in a garage.

I've always told people my favorite mod in my 93 hatch is the Momo steering wheel. It changes the feel completely. But a clean interior is important in any car. Great video

coil overs are good but lowering the car when its not meant to isnt it will put lots of stress on bushings and ball joints etc, the added spring rate from the coil overs is most likely enough to keep the light weight chassis from rolling more than stock so if you want it to be more reliable and sporty id recommend stock ride height and if you want less body roll just put in a bigger roll bar and some polyurethane bushings too edit:also speed bumps or steep driveways will be a pain in the ass with a low car
So many people need to hear this. Worry about the foundation before throwing mods at it. Spend your money making sure everything is well maintained and clean first. Respect the vehicle for what it is.
I think ChrisFix Bought a Honda Civic and Opened a New Channel for it, and Here we Are ;)

Carlos Rojas cause they are a immature dumb ass people lol i hate my 07 does it especially cause people think I’m trying to race I have a stock muffler no mods to the car everything is stock besides my rims and MOMO tires I don’t even like how deep and loud it is
I had a DA Integra, when I first got it, it was straight piped. Took a few months to save up for an oe exhaust..I was so glad when the noise was gone. I dunno how anyone can daily a car with a stupid loud exhaust.
Dope how these were things that everyone can do, not some over expensive mods that no one can afford! Great video! 💪🏽
Yep that’s the idea!
I really appreciate your point about upgrading the things you actually TOUCH. I never really thought about it that way.
Love this build. Been watching the series since roughly the beginning. Very clean build, nothing obnoxious. This is the book on how to do a tasteful civic build without dropping 10k on a swap and all that. Keep it up. Love the content.

This changed my view for performance mods, 100% next month I’ll get steering wheel and a shifter, find some CRX seats and be ready to go. Love that ❤️

I noticed how clean your interior was right off the bat! Nice video!
Your civic has to be my most favourite car ever keep up the good content👍
I ended up liking this video more than I expected to. I definitely agree with all of it; especially keeping a clean car. You ever consider upgrading your gauges for a different color like white or silver?
Great video, one thing I would add is to upgrade the sound system and head unit. Good sounding music makes every drive a bit more fun!
Great video. I remember Chrisfix videos now. Keeping a car clean is the hardest thing. But it sure makes a big difference
Love the driving vlogs keep up the good work!

EXTRA 1 INCH CAN GO A LONG WAY "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID" - OFFICE
Thank you for posting this!!!! I bought a 2000 Honda Accord and I am wanting to make it a fun daily driver. Your list is probably one of the best lists I’ve seen for Honda fans! I do plan on putting an exhaust and an intake on my Accord, but it’s not gonna be anything too crazy. I do wish I would have bought a Honda sooner. But I will say it’s fun driving one!
Watching your videos makes me want to buy a project honda, keep up the good work!
You should!
My RSR exhaust sounded perfect on my grey DB1 I had. I lived in meridian too!
The twin loop mufflers sound really good just a touch of loudness and a deeper tone that's the best muffler I ever had on a honda
Had DC Sports TCS in my first RSX, Comptech RH, CAS, Hondata - Sounded like a 2.0 sport bike! Rips!!!
I had the original Spoon sports street muffler.. They dont sound noisy like the ricers use.. It just sounds good.. Deep rich sound, and not too loud. Made difference to your acceleration too.. Unfortunately i crashed my civic. 😭
I like the twin loop cause it was only like 100 and I loved the sound cause everyone else just has fart cans on their hondas this actually had some class to it but I sold the car due to having a kid now I'm building my 2018 civic hatch and love it wanna do something with the exaust soon
Agreed! Your interior is clean af. Nothing like going into a clean car inside and out.

Hello! I have a Ciciv 98 and I hope in the future, my car will look like yours! Good video Saludos desde Mexico! x)
The clean interior is definitely what I first noticed when the vlog started. Looks really nice lol
The EM1 in my opinion is Honda's better looking car that they've made.
Intake down pipe and a good exhaust absolutely make a car more fun.
Love your civic channel. Big fan. This channel literally inspired me to buy a Honda civic. Short story I got my 1998 Honda Civic EX at the beginning of 2020 for $4000 flat from an old couple who had this car garage kept for almost 8 years. The seller did say he kept good care of the car and drove it twice a month and did regular maintenance. I personally thought the price was so-so, but the best thing about buying my civic was the fact that it only had 65K Original Miles with no forms of rust but little dings there & there, and the interior was in pristine condition.
Sounds exactly like my car. An older women owned it and hardly drove it but her mechanic kept it in perfect condition
I had a 98 EK Hatch, previous owner polished it so the black paint was shiny. I got all kinds of comments on how clean it was, seriously understated. You see a lot of beat up Civics on the road, a clean one is a beacon of hope. I loved my EK so much.
Agreed! I think in a way the D series Civics are fun to drive BECAUSE they are underpowered. I have a D17A2 powered 05 Civic and a K24A2 swapped 04 Civic (both 5 speed sedans) and I love the power of the K24, especially the low end torque. It's nice to be able to keep the RPM really low and not have to downshift all the time. However, I also like that I can really push the D17 Civic on the streets and floor it all the time without exceeding safe and legal speeds. Being able to drive it like I stole it without breaking any laws and still get 40+ MPG is great!
Hot air intake is a must in a slow Honda. Bwahhhhhhh I had an Injen on my 09’ Accord i4. I was hitting vtec all day long. I bought it with 30k miles and drove it to 240k miles. I still hit vtec the day I sold it.
I agree and like your taste in driver experience. Hopefully you keep that car around for a while. Most of modern vehicles today no matter what brand, make & model is all part of Planned Obsolescence.
Quick nice and easy video! You got a like from me man!
Glad you liked it!
News seats add about 10hp, confirmed. Steering wheel adds about 20hp. The more mods, the faster Hondas go.
NUMBER 6: Add a rear sway bar! A rear sway bar will help mitigate the understeer characteristics of these cars. If you have a coupe you will have to get Civic sedan or Integra rear control arms (or aftermarket ones) to accept bolts for the sway bar.
If you have a 7th or 8th gen corolla an aftermarket sway bar is apparently a MASSIVE improvement over the stock bar for handling.
Super clean car and amazing video! Subbed!
I just went back through and liked all of the civic videos in hopes of new civic content!! :P
An exhaust makes a difference too, makes it feel like your going faster 😭
Haha I can agree on that
Plus who wants an ugly dinky stock pipe!
or just have an exhaust leak itl sound faster lmao

Love your car! Hey, I would disconnect that airbag. Airbags are designed for a specific model and won't work well in another. Things like the volume of the airbag, the speed of actuation and the shape of it are carefully designed taking into account the interior design of the car: the seating position, the steering wheel position, seatbelts, etc. Putting another car's airbag in your car can be as dangerous (or even more dangerous) than not having an airbag at all. I highly doubt that the Civic and the s2000 share the same airbag design. Just in case you didn't considered that.
Never considered that, have the same model car and considering doing something similar thanks for the heads up
steer bags are all very similar only a few companies make them i pull them off every dy
I’m just subscribed for the clean interior, trust me, ur car make the real difference

Man this is exactly what I’m looking to do. At the moment I have a 99 lx. So far I have installed a tein superstreet coil overs, polurethane energy suspension, toe and camber adjustment links for the rear and short shift kit. Looking at spar I ff1 rims and doing the integra disc swap eventually. The long long run is a k24 swap ( I already got the mounts, “used” for 100 in perfect condition) making around 250 to 300 naturally aspirated. Cool seeing a clean build. Good luck
