You’ve seen VTEC on cars, but what does VTEC mean? VTEC has to do with the valves in your engine that help dictate airflow, horsepower and fuel consumption. This Science Garage gets into Cams, lobes, lifters and more before narrowing in on how VTEC works. Cars have single cams, overhead cams, dual overhead cams and even triple overhead cams to help them do their jobs. VTEC is a unique variable cam design that has changed the way we think of engines… get ready, because VTEC just kicked in!
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

He misses a very important part amd was wrong on a part. Vtecs middle bigger cam lobe simply kicked in at 5200 rpm regardless of if the pedal is all the way down or not and stays that way until rpms drop below 5200 rpms no other variables matter like this guy said. He said engine temp and oil pressure have to be at certain points too lol nope sorry bud I've tuned Honda engines with hondata for the last 10 years and the only thing that the ECU reads to click that pin in to use the higher lobe is simple that 5200 rpm point. @@seekdiscomfort4746 great info! why is he talking about multiple parameters then, any idea?
@@seekdiscomfort4746 i have an ap1 s2k and its also interesting that the vtec has a protection mechanism when the engine is too cold which completely makes sense (shouldn't be romping on it when cold anyways) but just thought that was cool
@@seekdiscomfort4746 I own a FN2 Civic Type R with the K20z4 i-VTEC engine with some basic bolt-ons and a Hondata tune that has lowered VTEC engagement to around 4000 rpms from the stock 5600ish and you are wrong! If my throttle is less than 25-30 % depressed VTEC will not engage even if I go all the way to the 8600rpm limiter. @@seekdiscomfort4746 with a hondata u can make vtec work at whatever RPMS the tunner decides.mine is also set by TPS. Soo I don't have to be @(5200) assume at TPS register the decided % of trottle it would kick.

@@seekdiscomfort4746 am also a Honda tuner. Many Hondas under our belt at our dyno here. And your both right. While yes, if you set the high cam and vtec kicks in at 5200, then higher lobe is activated at 5200 BUT Vtec also has its own parameters. For example, you have to usually be at a minimum of 140*F coolant temperature that your engine needs to be at before Vtec can activate. When it comes to oil pressure, you cannot set Vtec to low or there won’t be enough oil pressure. So yes you can set Vtec to kick in at 5200 you also have to meet the parameters to safely be in high cam (engine temp and oil pressure). Obviously Once the car is started and warmed up it’s fine- it’s not like anybody is going WOT as soon as they start their car. But he isn’t wrong either.

Back in the the mid 90s I had a 91 JDM integra xsi vtec sedan with a b16a engine, 2 engines in one. Loved this shit back then, timing was key when up shifting at the rev limit to keep vtec engaged. Tuning for these in NZ was still in its infancy, had done basic mods, full exhaust, extractors and air intake, but still a car to be reckoned with, with what we had lurking our streets back then. Cruising, someone pulls alongside wanting a race pop into 3rd revs touching 3500 to 3600 vtec engaged then GO! Instance power see ya! Just thinking about then puts a smile on my face from some fond memories yeah!
One of the best videos ever, on any topic.
What's the science behind why cars have "New Car Smell"?
The "new car smell" is mostly adhesive fumes from the vehicle assembly.
TheFerrariKid its glue and plastic. i kinda hate it, every new car i buy i drive for like 2 months with the windows open, my head just hearts becouse of that smell.
Are you really confused on why that happens, have you ever owned anything new, everything has a "new" smell from production.
I work for a car manufacturer and I always smell the new car smell every day when I roll them off the production line.
