Exploring an Abandoned Mineshaft! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.15]
The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
In this tutorial, we introduce Abandoned Mineshafts - a maze of tunnels featuring minecarts and rails, cave spider spawners, and exposed veins of ore!
Digging into the mineshaft in our starter cave's deepslate levels, we explore how to navigate abandoned mineshafts, the loot you can find in minecart chests, how to disable cave spider spawners, and we even run into multiple spawners within range of each other!
Having looted enough diamonds from the mineshaft to upgrade our armour, we enchant a diamond chestplate and leggings, completing our diamond armour set - and this gives me the confidence to explain how to fight Endermen safely! With that done, we look at another example of an Abandoned Mineshaft, generating on the surface in a Badlands (or Mesa) biome.

You handle cave spiders with such composure, I start shaking when I hear spider sounds in mineshaft
Honey wake up, it's Survival Guide time
Early squad!
Wow, this meme has really caught on quick. It's like the new "I'm a simple man..."
I'm awake, do you have the tea?
Ok my love 😂
Cave spiders are smaller than regular spiders and can squeeze through smaller gaps. Be careful
(butthole puckers) O.o
It makes multi-spawner farms much easier at least since they can funnel through smaller spaces as well.
Can we talk about the sheer amount of luck that Pix has had? Double cave spider spawners, the spider dungeon spawner, dropping his portal in to a nether fortress last episode… I’m almost jealous. Lol
I think multiple cs spawners are common, i found 4 in a single mineshaft and they were near each other too so potentially a 4 spawner farm
Oh coincidentally i also spawned near a fortress yesterday when i made my first portal, only the thing is i spawned on top of a huge lava lake with a cut off fortress
He really found an amazing seed here. I usually end up using spectator mode or Chunkbase to find spawners and hardly ever encounter mineshafts.
@@imperfectimp that's not fun
@@imperfectimp using chunkbase for biomes is fine but using it for every single location just ruins the game
It's worth noting that the cooldown of monster spawner blocks only ticks down while a player is within activation range. As such, combining spawners that are out of range is always worse than making individual farms for them. But as far as mineshafts are concerned, -each of them only generates two cave spider spawners. If you find more spawners, that means multiple mineshafts generated overlapping each other.- [edit] Not sure where I got the "only 2" part from, probably got things mixed up with nether fortresses, which definitely have 2 blaze spawners. It actually looks more like any corridor section that doesn't have rails (which is a 1 in 3 chance) has a 1 in 23 chance to contain a spawner.
Wow I didn't know the fact about the 2 spawners/mineshaft thing. Thanks for sharing!
Is the y value for the 16 block activation range the players head or feet? I recently found blaze spawners just within range of each other but not sure I'll be able to still be in activation range after including the usual 8 block drop to have them clear spawner range.
@@sambuma I'm relatively certain it's the feet. An entity's position is the bottom center of its hitbox. That's where distances are usually calculated from.
source on the 2 per shaft thing?
@@zooms7889 Thanks for questioning that, I had to look it up and found it to be wrong. The code doesn't actually suggest any kind of limit, aside from the structure size itself.
Worth mentioning that you can’t put both mending and infinity on the same bow, thus the discussion of which Pix has a preference for. Thanks for brightening my morning commute!
But bows that you made before the rule change in Java 1.11 still work in the current versions. I've been playing in the same survival world for years and stocked up on Infinity + Mending bows before the change, still have two full shulker boxes full of them that should last me until the end of time.
@@Raskolnikov70that's crazy
@@Raskolnikov70 The terrain in your world must be atrocious from all the updates to generation!
@@JacksonOwex Oh yea, it's worse than you'd think because I've been erasing and resetting chunks for a while now using MCA Selector or NBT reader. Created it in 1.9 or 1.10, began resetting in 1.13 to re-do most of the oceans around the base, then redid most of the villages after 1.14, wiped most of the nether in 1.16 when that update dropped. It's in 1.17 now and my current long-term project is to finish loading up most of the central area of the world (roughly 20,000 x 10,000 blocks) to permanently preserve it with the old MC terrain before updating to 1.18 where the terrain generation changes drastically. I hate the look of that seed (and MC in general) with the C&C switchover. The caves are nice, but the new overworld is icky now, looks like an old-school amplified world in too many places. So - lots of chunk errors like straight line cliffs cutting through terrain, odd biome placement, etc... that I usually clean up as I expand my base which covers thousands of blocks in every direction. No hurry, I never want to reset this thing but improve it as the game expands.
Pixlriffs mentioned elsewhere recently that some eagle-eyed fans noticed what appears to be part of a desert fossil in this video. If you pay close attention to the mine tunnel ceiling at 22:52 to 22:55, you'll see a few smooth, pale blocks that are obviously not sandstone overhead. Those might be the underside of several bone blocks. Hopefully, Pixlriffs will come back to this at some point to discuss the fossil structures that can be found in deserts and swamps.
It also has coal
“Spiders, whys it always got to be spiders? Why can’t it be a trail of butterflies or something?”
I'm with Ron Weasley on that one. 😂😂😂
At this point the survival guide is apart of my daily routine.
Oak trees that generate with the leaves 2 blocks up can fill the same role of keeping an enderman at a distance Very useful in a panic when mining is a bit much 😅
quick tip: if you have honey bottles, you can drink them to counteract the poison
A bucket of milk works too since beehives generate less frequently than cows would
@@ElmW00ds oh yeah but honey can stack
@@qSolid21_ true! lol; literally forgot about that 😂
Even though I have many years of Minecraft experience, I am enjoying this iteration of the Survival Guide with the v1.20 content integrated. You found a winning format with the dual sections of each episode
Constant refreshing for the new episode pays off! Love this series!!
Hearing, "Stick around for ___", makes me pretty excited, because I know there's still a good amount of the episode left.
Thank you for this series. I have not played since 2013 and am excited to log back on and go through my own world with you
Wow. That must be some pretty big changes from what you played before.
I know many people have said as much, but damn do you know how to do this stuff! You're not only a competent Minecraft player, but a really professional content creator who is incredibly enjoyable and educational, even for people like me who have been playing since the 1.7 days.
Waking up with a pixlriffs video is the best way to start your day. I don't know how much more I can communicate that I love this content creator
Oh man you made my day when you said the spiders were venomous and not poisonous! Thank you!
Always pushing out great content! You're an inspiration to me and a pillar in the community! Even though I might not be in the target group for this series, as I've played since early-to-mid beta, I love watching you play in a slower tempo than regular Let's Play series. Also, your voice is a treasure.
These videos have been the highlight of my day since it started. I keep learning new things
I'm late to the party on this series so I'm just hitting this episode now... Funnily enough I'm just about to start zombifying/curing my villagers so need a source of spider eyes for the weakness potions.... Great timing! Already have the brown mushroom farm, sugarcane farm, gold farm and 3 farmer villagers to supply me with apples so a reminder on how to turn a spider spawner into a farm is very nice right now.
14:40 but you can change the type of protection, just not with books, but if you have another enchanted armor with a different protection, depending on which one you place first it will add one or the other to the combined item. Same thing with silk touch and fortune.
Really enjoying playing along on this world in bedrock edition. The seed is great. Unfortunately, the structures generate in different places so you won't find all these spawners... however, a skeleton spawner generates on the surface within 50 blocks of spawn! Further, the villagers beat me to Pix's fishing lake, a plains village generates on the far side of it extending into the valley behind. Also Pix is there anywhere I can share some screenshots with you?
Would love an episode on incompatible enchantments such as infinity and mending, since those sorts of things have always confused me, or just in general an episode that goes into detail about all the different enchantments and the pros and cons of each :)
For me personally, mending makes more sense when you get a piglin bartering system; infinite spectral arrows, which doesn't work on an infinity bow. Same thing applies when you have tipped arrows from villagers.
If you’re keen to use tipped arrows, then of course it makes sense. I’ve just never seen the appeal of spectral arrows when a powerful enough bow can one-shot most standard mobs, so the glowing effect outlines them for the brief time it takes their death animation to play - and half the mobs it’d actually be helpful for, like the Wither and the Ender Dragon, are immune to potion effects and don’t end up glowing anyway 😅
@@Pixlriffs Yeah I guess it comes down to personal preference. Both choices make sense, I just choose to farm arrows than continue to combine bows.
One thing about cobwebs, they'll break your fall and set you down easy. That can sometimes come in handy if there's nothing right there waiting to kill you.
It is possible to replace incompatible enchantments like the protections (at least in Bedrock edition but I'd be surprised if there wasn't parity here). You have to combine two of the same item to do it, though, and can be expensive XP-wise. If you take a new set of boots and put Protection on them you should be able to replace the Blast Protection in an anvil.
Another lovely episode. Love to see it Although I need to admit, too many cave spiders to my taste, lol
Aaaaand this kinda thing is why I always build/explore in Peaceful difficulty. Much less stressful. You handle it like a champ, though.
that just removes the fun out of the game though, if youre going to do everything in peaceful, might aswell just go into creative mode
@@brxnqtbut in peaceful you still have to acquire resources, and you can take fall damage, lava damage, suffocation damage etc. Creative is just everything handed to you in an infinite supply, peaceful you still have to grind for items
I am totally blind, playing with mods, and I go really slow right now because there are things I'm still getting used to. When the accessibility mod's good enough I might try a straight survival run. Until then, I'll continue playing in the way that makes it fun for _me._ :)
Also useful is the chain of Logs->Charcoal->Torches
I was really busy this week so I just now get to watch all the survival guide videos from this week
Idk if people know this tip, but I'll kindly give it for free as someone who has been playing since the old school days of 2013. Not one of the first to play, one of the most fun times. If yoy hear most cave noises are random, if you hear minecarts banging, brakes screeching, a get other particular noises, that means their is in fact a mineshafr nearby. Though it won't always be easy to find. I've on occassion built a surface base above one, only to start hearing said noises even when my base has been lit, and in fact did find a mineshaft underneath.
love that we are getting so many episodes so quickly! Thank you sir!
Love the videos. Was so glad you picked the series up again!😊
I love watching these video's I've watched every series you've done not so much for the tips any more although the first series was very helpful as I was a new player way back then... I watch them for the excitement of the exploration and to see you have such good luck with all your finds today was great
Loving this series! I'm getting excited every time the notification goes off!
I may have missed it in an earlier video of this season, but could you go over some of the "shortcuts" like moving items from inventory to a chest and the like. Enjoying the series!
This video is from Season 2, but all the keyboard shortcuts I explain here still apply in Season 3 :) kzhead.info/sun/lc-KodWwp6N8omg/bejne.html
@@Pixlriffs That video and all the other related intro videos to your Season 2 run are great and are still very relevant to Season 3. I don't think you mentioned those "basic" videos at the beginning of Season 3. Might be worth mentioning that the videos exist for the people that started as Season 3 and are unaware of the other useful beginner videos you have.
My friends always bully me for picking up the rail in the abandoned mineshafts. I feel so seen in this episode lol
It was much easier when you could just drop a water bucket to sweep up the rails. But then waterlogging rails became a more valuable mechanic 😭
Thanks for showing Bows. Im loving this slower teaching play though. (I belive alot of Major players need to watch and learn...cough Hermitcraft...lol)
I gotta say instead of placing torches on the left, I think it’s always better to place them facing towards the way back. That way you don’t get confused in complex intertwining caves or mineshaft systems
How will you get confused if you ALWAYS place torches on the same side? If you put them on the left and you happen upon torches on the right then you know that you are now going "out", so the torches DO "point" the way out!
Pix knocking out gems everyday. Fantastic!
You can also find chain mail armour in treasure chests in bedrock at least
i love getting a notif everytime theres a new survival guide episode :D
On bedrock you can also find chain armor in buried treasure chests. I once got a full set from one chest. Each piece has a 1.7 chance to be in there, so I guess it's rare
Watching you explore caves feels kind of uncomfortable ... because I place my torches on the right hand side. It feels just more natural to me to place them on the side closest to my main hand so seeing you do it on the other one is a little uncanny. Obviously, neither method is superior as long as you are consistent with it, at minimum per world you play on. Because trust me, you *will* run into a previously explored cave where you put the torches on the other side if you swap.
Hey Pixl, thanks for the share and can't wait to see to the spidy farm in action.
I found three cave spider spawners close to each other and I had no clue what to do with it now I’ll check your video on a triple cave spider spawned thanks!
I found a 5-spawner setup in my solo world, definitely going to get around to setting up an XP farm there some day.
I found a similar setup in my own world - two spawners close enough I could activate them both by standing in between, and a third just few steps further out. Thanks to Pix’ earlier series I turned it into a spider farm which was a great source of XP until I built a gold farm in the nether.
@@trevinbeattie4888 Yep, after building a gold farm, an enderman farm and a guardian farm, there isn't much impetus to get a spider farm built no matter how cool it might be. Still want to do it eventually though, just for the challenge :)
Abandoned Mineshafts are some of my favorite features of Minecraft. The Survival Guide seed has some really good ones close to spawn. You can live off the local resources in a mineshaft. Fenceposts are fuel. Free minecart rails and chains are everywhere. Setting up a mini-base inside one is very handy. You'll easily get multiple chests of resources to haul back or process locally. If you want a more convenient spider spawner than the Badlands, checkout the cave on the South ("left from the house") side of the mountain outside the starter house base. Just walk up the mountain to the normal tree between the Cherry Trees and light up the small cave.
I have so many things to comment on that I don't know where to begin. lol :) I think, combined with last episode's accidental Nether Fortress find, I have to say, based on the first mine shaft explored, that you just have the most incredible luck with these things. :) Spawners next to each other, heaps of ore, it's like the Minecraft worlds just get giddy when you seed them and then dance out with their cornucopia of resources. And I mean this all with the greatest of respect. :) The minecart loop you mentioned in passing caught my attention as I did find a mine with 3 spawners in it, but one was just out of range of the other two by a few blocks. Knowing now that there is a wind up and cool down time on them I might try that to see if I can make my third spawner work with the other two. I'll need to finish watching the rest of the video now. :) Thanks for the episode.
As this is more of a tutorial like series, I wouldn’t be surprised if the seed as well as the episodic path and content, such as the spammers side by side you speak of have been previously searched to both help make the content more exciting but also help new players strive for something a little more exciting. There is no I’ll moral about it, it’s just good content.
Just completely overlooked the Spider Dungeon's two Otherside discs in roughly the same spot of each chest. That might be a rarer occurrence than the Enchanted Golden Apple in the Desert Temple.
I think chainmail also spawns in some woodland mansion chests! And in bedrock, you can find it in buried treasure
Great episode!! Thanks for the tip about gold generation!
This has become a big part of my mornings.
Collecting all those grass blocks from the endermen without Silk Touch was a nice little early-game win.
A very chobblesome mineshaft
I completely forgot that that is a word
Hey, I get that reference.....
Finally figured out the time you upload your videos in my time zone! 5:00 am!!! 😅
Gets inspired to play survival Spawns near powerdered snow on top of a mountain
I swear the last abandoned mine I was in had a TON of cave spider spawners!!
After watching Minecraft videos for a literal decade, today I learned you can deal with spiderwebs with a water bucket :0
Nice. So much information! Thank you
I was watching your videos and I had been up all night with my oldest Schnauzer Woofie - he had a terrible seizure and nearly died. He's doing awesome today. Yah. But, I fell asleep and slept through several videos as I had a play list on - so I am going back and watching today. And no, they ae def not boring - I had been awake for over 24 hours and am fairly "old" LOL I love watching your vids - was excited to see you were doing another survival guide. :-) Yah.
i love the outro song so much! they really added another banger to the game🤌
15:30 well not really, since you have a skeleton spawner, you have an infinite supply of arrows ;)
Shouldve added mineshaft/dungeon armor trims "Geode" or "Ore" armor trims would be cool
Another great video. Here's hoping you hit 1million soon. You deserve it.
12:02 I believe that chain mail armor is a loot item in buried treasure chests, as well, at least in Bedrock Edition.
When down here… if you hear chirping or see any black-blue pulsating substance… get out as fast as you can because that's the Deep Dark where the Warden spawns.
One of the big projects i want to do in my world is replace all the oak wood in a mineshaft with cherry wood.
I started watching this series yesterday and started a new world on the same seed and I'm really enjoying it! I did find a spider dungeon right near your house in the mountain!! I would post a pic there's no way on youtube lol
Is there a discord I could join?
One Datapack I use is craftable bundles after you did the video on bundle organization
i prefer to make cave spider spawners to just make passive killing farms. With magma blocks and a minecart to get string. The hitboxes are just not worth the effort to kill it with a sword. xD
Spider Eyes are one of the most desired crafting ingredient for Potions, and also have significantly more xp than their larger spawner counterparts. So multiple Cave Spider Spawners are well worth having in your world. And while Honey Blocks do not keep them from climbing the walls, they do keep them from jumping up. You may also want to invest into making a Bane of Arthropods Looting Sword, which will cut through them like butter.
@@_Abjuranax_ i prefer using normal spider spawner for that purpose. Until now i tend to get lucky with spawners near my bases. But it's more a personal preference then something i would advise for everyone yeah.
I wish they added trims to mineshafts. I actually thought It'd be an obvious structure to make a trim for??
Loving this series as I’m new to Minecraft. Learnt so much. Are you going to be covering villages and what you can do with them in future episodes?
he will dw... if you still want to learn rn you can refer to survival guide 2
i never really understood why mineshafts in a badlands biome generate with dark oak wood when normal oak trees grow on the plateaus there naturally. It looks nice tho. i wish there would be other wood types for mineshafts, for a bit of variety. or, different "colored" mineshafts have different rooms and challenges/loot or something... i kinda like that idea o:
I think the dark oak wood has a better chance of standing out against the mid-range terracotta colours. Oak mineshafts might blend in too much :)
@@Pixlriffs makes sense, never thought about it like that o:
I really dislike cave spiders but I love exploring mineshafts 😮
Great episode
I've a simple and, maybe, dumb question : With a skeleton farm, providing an incredible bunch of arrows, and fighting mobs along with the adventure, why the infinty enchantment is requested ? I see it like an emergency enchantment. This is why I've both... It's my emergency bow that I call, usually, "Halp" 😅. Back in the days, we've had the infinity/mending warbow. Nowadays, the mending one is my first piece of choice. It's so easy to gather ammunition/craft arrows/gather xp... The infinity one is "almost" useless, unless you're in early game... imho I may be wrong. Thanks for the video !
Eve nwith a farm it's still rather easy to run out of arrows when you are out in the world exploring, especially large exploration trips like end city raiding. Your Bow won't break for hours, but arrows run out quickly. Finally Arrows also take inventory space. If we add a second emergency bow in a Enderchest, you will have thousands of arrows in 3 inventory slots.
@@tehSunBro I can't disagee... The infinity is an emergency weapon. As you said. But I agree also that is a challenge to never run out of arrows. With my really poor experience and I'm not a snipper for sure, I'm half a stack almost all the time. The flame Enchantement can drive me almost out of ammunitions surely... 😅
chainmail armor can be also found in treasure chests!
Another double cave spider spawner :D Shame that the zombie spawner is so far away
Video excellence! 🏆🏆🏆 thank you Good Sir 🎩
Great series Pix. Any chance of seeing Pixandria make an appearance when you go after camels?
As an Addition, you can actually trap an enderman in a boat evem before you agro it, its kinda inconsistent but there's almost no risk in doing it
Wake up babe, new survival guide episode just dropped.
Okay why did I have NO idea that water could break cobwebs! I’ve been playing this game for 10 years 😭
I had no idea you can play freeze with an enderman! I’ve been terrorized by them for so long
7:13 that jumpscare tho...
Already in my word with you
One of these days I’m waiting for Pix to remind us “my name has been, and will always remain, Pixlriffs…” Cuz like…well…it hasn’t changed yet…🤷🏻♂️😅
My anxiety watching him ignore the diamonds at 10:01 til 10:49 : 📈📈📈📈📈
[v1.20.41] One day in minecraft, I typed a random seed (and no I did not use the seed templates). When I was doing my creative world, I went down a ravine and found 2 mineshafts about 30 blocks apart from each other. I found 3 cave spider spawners (3595, 26, 3585 / 3592, 27, 3525 / 3505, 26, 3572) and a skeleton spawner (3500, 26, 3553) on the first mineshaft. Then on the second, I found a zombie spawner (3563, -39, 3653), a cave spider spawner (3586, -17, 3637) which I can literally see, 2 CAVE SPIDER SPAWNERS (3551, -21, 3657 / 3551, -22, 3634) LITERALLY 15 BLOCKS AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, and another cave spider spawner (3562, -16, 3657) about 40 blocks away from those 2 spawners. Those 3 cave spider spawners were insanely close. Seed: 10284928493652 Coordinates: Around 3600, 26/-17, 3600
Episode 15 already? wow felt like just yesterday😃

my friends once found a mineshaft that was just a roughly 10 block long, 2 blocks off the ground "mineshaft" in our world
This is my therapy
And if you keep eye contact with the enderman in a staring contest they will lose agro and just walk away!
Just woke up still watching Pix
You could’ve combined the flame bow with the infinity bow and it would’ve been even better
