How to Protect a Village! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.18]

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
Villagers are very useful to keep around, so let's make sure we can keep them alive! In this tutorial, we explore how to defend villagers against the threat of zombie attacks.
First we build trading booths for our recently cured Zombie Villagers. We look at how to keep them safe from zombie variants while still keeping them open for trading, and discuss how having villagers around actually prevents pillager patrols from spawning - within a certain area, anyway.
Then we head out to the first naturally generated village we discovered in this world, and spend a few days setting it up to be protected against zombie attacks - using approaches like lighting, fencing off the area, taking advantage of the village's Iron Golems, or just sleeping for the night!
We also protect the villagers from environmental threats like nearby caves and, in some cases, their own farms.

  • Hey folks! I'm very happy I demonstrated how to back up your world in this episode, because this morning I had to use that backup. My PC crashed during gameplay, the world got corrupted, and I now have to rebuild all the progress I made for the next video! While we're on that topic, please read the latest community post, because the upload schedule for Survival Guide is going to change while I send my PC off to be repaired. kzhead.infoUgkx6xkLHjLMqPBCELYXuFR0EOMf-1L6J7_j

    • Sorry to hear about that. 🫂 I hope you have a good backup system for your computer. I learned early in my career the importance of backups and redundancy, which is why my system has RAID-5 storage to guard against disk (now SSD) failures plus LTO backups I run weekly to guard against corruption or data loss, which I have had to use a few times both for software upgrades that didn’t work out and mistakes I’ve made.

  • Two things I've learned the hard way about village perimeter fences. If the ground and the fence line forms a 1-block-deep "trench" between the ground and the fence, an iron golum will walk right over that trench and then go over the fence. He probably won't be interested in getting back inside the perimeter fence. Make sure any "trenches" between the ground and the fence are at least 2 blocks wide. Second, if you enclose too much area inside the perimeter fence, a raid can spawn inside the fence! That mistake cost me all my traded-up villagers. :-(

  • Remember that on Java edition, Zombie Sieges can happen inside villages starting at midnight regardless of light level as long as the player is there, so try to go to sleep by midnight if you're in a village or just leave before that point.

  • Making the backup of your world is only half the solution. The backup is typically made on the same hard drive as the world itself. To avoid losing the world and the backup, you should open your backups folder and copy the backup/s to another drive altogether. Perhaps a second drive in your PC, or an external drive.

  • Time for the Bedrock tips!! First, villagers don't move towards you when you interact with them, so the best thing to do in that situation is put blocks where you can and if you shift over them you might be able to push them! Second and last thing, you have a preview of a villager's next trade, and when they unlock it, it happens immediately, youcan just go ahead and do those trades. This is different, because on Java, if it wasn't clear enough, you need to close the trades window before they can upgrade, and it takes them a few seconds to do so! Actually, there is one more thing for me to say! There is no in-game way for us Bedrock players to check the light levels, or at least no practical ones. What we can do is wait to see if a mob spawns or place a lot more torches, so yeah!

  • I don't build a starter base, I take over villages and remodel them until late game, so there are some more tricks I like to do: (a) Confiscate all the beds as soon as you get there, put them all in the biggest house, and let the villagers go in at dusk before sealing the entrance. Guarantees their safety while you work. (b) Since the villagers are confined to a smaller section of the village, you could start just by securing that small part and take your time doing the rest to avoid errors in the defense from rushing. (c) Instead of fences, you can use sweet berry bushes. Mobs won't pathfind through them and they grow crazy fast. In early game is a lot easier than fences. (d) If you want free-range villagers, make sure to put a lightning rod nearby as well. (e) Villagers are 2 blocks tall, so even something as thin as a carpet in front of a 2 block tall doorway will prevent them from going through it. Although, they will still try and also open the door if they can reach it. (f) Sweet berry bushes with carpets on top will also block pathfinding over the carpets as well, making it easier to control villager movement while not interfering with the look of builds or player movement through it.

    @Kamorzy@Kamorzy10 ай бұрын
    • I do the same thing, in transforming and adding onto an existing village rather than building a base from scratch. I'm going to have to play with these suggestions and see how much of them apply to bedrock because they'd be super useful. I struggle to find different ways to block area and control mob path finding thats not a wall or fence (at least inside the village, I still use walls inside my crop farm area because it works esthetically)

      @RedSeabird96@RedSeabird9610 ай бұрын
    • Just 1 simple carpet in front of a doorway blocks them? I didn't know that, lol. What I usually do is when I build my house in the center of the village, I put a trapdoor to the front of my doorway to block villagers and it works until I use a pit with a string and carpet trick to disable mob pathfinding.

      @karkovb1522@karkovb152210 ай бұрын
    • @@karkovb1522 Yeah, I typically put a berry bush beneath the carpet for the same thing. I dislike that they continue to open the doors even though they can't fit through it with just a carpet, bc they don't close them again.

      @Kamorzy@Kamorzy10 ай бұрын
    • Sometimes the differences between Java and Bedrock bug me. Lol I tried these methods of blocking pathfinding on my bedrock world and so far only the berry bushes on top of the grass blocks works. The carpet allows them to pathfind over it and it doesn't stop them from fitting through doors unfortunately. 😑 dang it,I was hopeful. Lol

  • If you have plenty of pumpkins, you can make jack-o-lanterns which provide 15 light instead of 14. You could then place those into a 1 deep hole, and then put carpet (or moss?) over it to hide the light source. When you mentioned the block light of 1 is enough, I thought a light level of 7 was low enough to allow spawning but apparently that changed in 1.18, sweet! Fewer torches to spam in my village!)

  • I like to take my time with the villages. I repair "enderman" looking potholes, reshape the dirt paths, clear all the grass, trim the trees so the leaves can all be walked beneath. Then I make all the fields larger and put down all the grass seeds, pick the crops and replant all that. If I have enough material to give them all beds and and chests and work stations then I'll do that too. Then I try to secure the nearby caves so nothing crawls out of them, and put torches all over everything: tree trunks corners of houses, corners of fields, along the sides of the pathways. I spend a good in-game week or two fixing it up like Animal Crossing and try to make it feel like home. I gather as much wheat as I can during that time period, and before I leave the village I turn it all into bread and distribute it amongsr the villagers. They have to worry about jobs by day and monsters by night, so the least I can do if I am going to raid their chests is to repay them with kindness.

  • Instead of building these outdoors villager traps I did one rather nifty thing! For the fletcher villager, I made a small room for him under the staircase, since there was just enough room for a basement there. For the farmer, I simply put the workstation and the bed in the original wooden viking house (I didn't destroy it and I built the main house a bit further to southeast) so it ended up being perfect for a beginner villager house :)

    @dragonrykr@dragonrykr3 ай бұрын
  • Pix, baby zombies riding chickens can still glitch through the trapdoor setup by your house. I found the best way to deal with that is to close the trapdoors. You also need lightning rods for storms in both places, I don't know how many for a space the size of your second village, and you need to make sure lighting strikes 5 blocks away from a villager, or lightning will turn villagers into witches.

  • One of my favorite things to do when protecting a natural or custom village is to surround it with fences to keep the villagers inside, and then place a wall of leaves, two or three blocks high, just outside the fence to keep the monsters out and block their view to the inside. Players can see mobs moving around outside the 'hedge' but the mobs outside can't see the player or villagers inside. Be aware that skeletons will attack iron golems, if they can see them over the fence. A tall hedge or wall will help prevent that. When fencing a village, be careful to place the fence far enough away from the center of the village so that iron golems spawn inside the fence. Also make sure there are no points inside the fence where iron golems can cross over.

  • About PC-resets: Do not think your minecraft worlds are safe with in-game backups. I had to re-set my PC a while back, and lost all my worlds. Even those backed up in-game. Re-setting windows removes MC worlds as well as other windows files. You still need to back up your worlds by manually copying them from your appsdata folder to a different drive (than C:) to make sure you'll get to keep your worlds.

    @Kjotleik@Kjotleik10 ай бұрын
    • Better yet, copy them to offline storage or at least another computer. I use LTO tapes, but that’s a bit advanced for most people. An external USB drive or cloud storage would do as well.

  • Something I personally like doing is to have a redstone lamp to light up the villager, also a piston with tinted glass at the one opening to close and to let you see into the set up. This makes the light in there toggleable and if you're building or afk near the area chances are it'll get converted for you to cure for better trades and the zombie would just despawn. This works best if all the caves near your trading hall are well lit. Its only downside is that you don't know if it's gonna work in ten minutes or an hour so it's really for the casual single player world that has all the time to spare.

I hate trying to work with villagers, they're such a pain. That's why I transform an existing village, I don't have to move them anywhere and its way easier. 😅
