Raiding a Nether Fortress! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.16]

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
In this tutorial, we return to the Nether to explore the dangers and rewards of the Nether Fortress.
First, we dip back into Piglin bartering so we have some Fire Resistance potions on our side. We then venture into a Nether Fortress to loot some chests, discover the 'Rib' Smithing Template, and grab the Nether Wart we'll need to start brewing potions!
We encounter our first Blazes and Blaze Spawners, farming enough Blaze Rods that we can tackle future episodes on potion brewing, Ender Chests, and locating the Stronghold. We also run into Wither Skeletons and discuss ways to deal with them, how you can tell the inside and outside sections of a Nether Fortress, and what loot is worth leaving behind.
Then we return to the Soul Sand valley Nether Fortress to see how that one generated differently, why so many mobs spawn there - with a simple explanation of how the mob cap works in Minecraft.

  • I think this is the first time I've seen it properly explained WHY soul sand valleys specifically have the manipulated spawning rules that makes everyone look for them for nether fortress farms like wither skeleton farms. It makes perfect sense that they wouldn't want a high concentration of ghasts in an area, and yet it never crossed my mind until now. Well done.

  • The actual term for the lava well is the nether hub of a fortress, and as such it is point at which the fortress generates from, and will lead to to all points of the rest of the fortress. This does not mean that all parts of a fortress will generate (as you have seen), just that all parts of the fortress will lead back to the nether hub from which it spawned.

  • I use Skizz’s scumpus in the fortress to find my way back to where I came in and I break the chests I open. Bringing a few signs as well can help guide you back to a blaze spawner if you’re in a fortress where it’s not immediately obvious where they are. My current fortress is almost completely buried so you can’t see the blaze from outside.

  • I actually didn't know that there was reduced mob spawning in soul sand valleys! I knew that soul sand valley fortresses were good for wither skeleton farms but I didn't know why. The only explanation I'd heard was "because zombie piglins won't spawn there" which didn't make much sense to me as a reason for there to be more fortress spawns. But a reduced spawn rate makes so much more sense, and it also makes sense that the point was to limit ghast spawning

  • I hated it when I first went to that soul sand fortress because so many blazes were attacking me. But there is a huge upside to that fortress: so many witter skeletons spawn there so I went there yesterday and with just one 8-minute fire resistance potion and looting 3 sword I got three witter skeleton skulls. It was really fast.

  • Good introduction to fortresses, priority for loot management and the igloo cliff hanger. Ran that soul sand valley fortress for wither skeleton heads. I got ganged up by so many dropping from roofs and spawning behind me on unprotected paths it was crazy. I had to recover my armor from a team of wither skeletons that claimed them from my corpse explosion after that. It will make an easy wither farm for late game even with minimal intersections. Good find on the igloo in the flower forest. The next is 4k block south. The important part of that further igloo's generation got over written by yet another extensive abandoned mineshaft. Not everyday you see one floating mid-air, though.

  • I don't know if I already knew that blazes could deal melee damage, but either way a nice piece of information to keep track of. Also I see why you didn't go to the soul sand fortress, mostly being the walkways, would mean you needed to go to another to mention the potential loot from the chest from the inside parts. Would make a good wither skull farm through.

Sadly I didn't realize the zombie spawner was near until after I finished the skeleton spawner so I had to redesign. Normally I'd just ignore zombie spawners but i couldn't pass on this one as i had never done a double spawner before. Great content as always. Thanks!

  • I was running back with 2 stacks of blaze rods and a ghost shot the ground behind me, but the ground behind me was gravel and I fell into lava and lost everything

  • A piece of moss carpet will stop most mobs from passing through a 2 block space without slowing the player down. You only need to worry about the mini versions. Wooden doors wont stop a zombie or a Piglin, but a stupid piece of carpet will. Honey bottles are stackable up to 16 and will cure the wither skeleton poison. Very useful when head hunting. I destroyed the blaze spawners on my first fortress. It was getting annoying, and a ton of blazes were spawning without it. You end up with a lot of surplus blaze rods when you are making 4-beacon pyramids.

  • Hey Pix! Is it possible to make a blaze rod farm from a blaze spawner in fortresses same as we make farms with other spawners

    • Yes and no. Blazes have a tendency to go upwards everytime they see a player so you need to put vines to prevent that. Also water needs to be replaced by lava since water dosent work.

  • Will you be building a blaze farm in this fortress? I tried making one in my world using a couple of different methods after watching a few other videos about them, but couldn’t get mine to work effectively.
