Highlights of the Neo G9 include:
- Much clearer picture quality and enjoyable colours
- Improved HDR with good quality image
- Fast 240Hz refresh rate or 120Hz in PBP/PIP
- Local dimming settings lead to really decent blacks and HDR support
Lowlights:
- Eye care mode is a bit too bright to be comfortable
- It's expensive
- HDR still isn't perfect
- There are some shadowy blurry problems when working

Downsides of the monitor from what I've seen:
- HDR mode can be a PITA and problematic with some games
- If you have two DP cables plugged in adaptive sync can cause Windows to think there are two screens

    • @@miltona891 I picked up the Neo G9 and I can no longer imagine life without it. I use PowerToys FancyZones to split my screen into three sections, allowing me to multitask more effectively. It's so useful as a programmer because I can have my IDE, docs & running app all on screen together. Gaming is also amazing. I play a lot of Forza and having an ultra wide view for in-car camera is super immersive. I personally don't care about HDR at all so I don't mind that it doesn't hit the advertised peak brightness. I also work from home, so having my personal computer and work computer on different inputs and being able to use the Picture-By-Picture feature is an added bonus.

  • I was considering both. After watching your review, I'm kinda in the same situation. I would be using my monitor for about 75% work and 25% gaming. So, it sounds like the best choice for me is the original G9. I like the new tech in the NEO. However, I've read about QC issues with the new one.

      @dannggg@dannggg Жыл бұрын
    • @@dannggg The issues of G9 Neo have been practically solved with the last firmware upgrades (even scanlines at 240 hz are practically invisible, at 120 hz there are no any issues at all). HDR (G9 Neo) delivers around 20000:1 (contrast) in the worst case vs 2300:1 in G9. It's a huge difference and because of that in games or in movies HDR is quite different. Also no distracting bars in movies/youtube because they look absolutely black. By working the local dimming zones can be switched off (maybe they weren't turned off in the review and because of that G9 seemed to be preferrable in that situation, not sure). $1600 at a promotional price vs $1250 G9 it is not that big difference for this kind of quality at present. If you want to buy uniquely G9 for work, maybe Odyssey G9 is an OK display but some grey bars in youtube will be a little bit distracting (especially in the evening or at night).

    • @@socialreport2836 So you think the Neo G9 is better?

      @PantojaManuel@PantojaManuel Жыл бұрын
    • @@PantojaManuel Yes, I am having it. It's definitely considerably better (with local dimming off it looks much worse, not absolutely bad but worse and the grey bars become distracting). HDR 800 nits or higher in the real scene (rtings, hardware unboxed) is excellent, much better than in any LCD monitor, even G7/G8 Neo (and they are 16:9) because of having a lot of mini leds 2048. Games/movies look amazing. Odyssey G9 doesn't have any true HDR (the contrast 2300:1 and the black colors look like grey in most scenes, for HDR the contrast must be at least 8000:1 in the chequerboard test but the higher the better). If you buy G9 Neo without dead color pixels, I suppose that you won't regret it. Even in 9 months when I play a modern game, I think about many moments that they look incredibly beautiful and I wouldn't see them like this by using any other technology (in most cases they would be much paler and less interesting). 32:9 is an incredible format and it makes a player feel that he/she is inside a game (even 21:9 doesn't do that). Any OLED can't replicate 32:9 because G9 has got 5120 but TVs have got 3840 in most cases and in bright scenes G9 Neo will be brighter than OLED. OLED will be better only in dark scenes but G9 Neo 32:9 and better looking HDR bright scenes vs OLED better looking HDR dark scenes, I would definitely prefer G9 Neo for entertainment and work.

  • Love your videos. The one you made for the original G9 has made me buy my own, and all i can say is that i absolutely love it! I'm gonna keep it for a few years, and until then maybe they'll make a mini-led G9 and after i can sell mine and upgrade. But until then, i'll be keeping my little beast :X. I also work a lot of the time on it with editing and just basic office work, and it's wonderful. If you have one, keep it, enjoy it, and maybe sometime later, upgrade to a better newer one :X.

I live in NZ & was looking to upgrade from a dual monitor setup which has served me well for the last 12 years (2x Dell 24" 1080 16:10) I was gonna buy the Neo G9 for $2800 NZD, but after watching this & your other video on the G9, I purchased the G9 today for $1800 NZD (ex Demo) & saved myself 1000 bucks. I do CAD / Multitasking 70%, Casual gaming 30%. I'm running a RTX 3070 so hopefully that will be sufficient, but otherwise I will put the $1000 I saved towards a GPU upgrade. @echnaton192@echnaton1922 жыл бұрын
    • @echnaton192 I don't know why anyone would say that it's not good for productivity when it's truly amazing. It's like having two 27 in 1440p monitor's size by side, and it's just unbelievable for productivity. The curve matches the distance when looking left to right. Also, for gaming, you're totally immersed like no other monitor. I have a 3440x1440p, and the G9 just does it better. It's a great monitor, and no monitor I've ever had was 100% perfect either. Both the G9 and Neo G9 with better HDR, either one would be great for productivity and also gaming. Hopefully, this helps out.

      @nickm8651@nickm86512 жыл бұрын
    • @@nickm8651 It does. The lg 38uc99 I own at the moment sucks at gaming as its highest refresh rate is 75 hz with bad gsync compatibility making it a bad match for my current high end rig. And it sucks that it does not have two full hd panels side by side, making it a pain in the arse for the software on one side of the screen that only runs without scrolling at full hd. I will watch out if the G9 will be available as a tax deducted rent to own from my employer. Sadly, unlike the gaming rigs the monitor selection aside from the model I rent to buy before the actual rig suck. But if the G9 neo is offered next spring I will upgrade from this monitor, mounting my “old” monitor above or at a 90 degree angle to the new one with an arm, making it adjustable. But that would mean I would also need to upgrade my current iPhone 7 for tax reasons, which will be necessary anyway to being end of life soon (last iOS it gets might be the next one). Ah well. It will overlap with my current rent by a few months, but then I will have a good setup, good monitors and the biggest iPhone money can buy at that moment. Then I will not upgrade for a few years, except maybe the GPU. A 3080 just doesn’t cut it with raytracing and ultra wide resolutions. Thanks for your reply, will watch for the best solution via my employer or swallow the pill and shell out the full price with no income tax deduction. Depending on how much gaming I will do in the near future and on the software at work that replaces the current full screen hogger, maybe I will upgrade sooner then planned.

    • @echnaton192 I think that there are two different regular G9's where one is a 120hz and the other is at 240hz and the "Neo G9" is a 240hz monitor. So make sure to check the detailed description of the monitor before purchasing. If your not worried about HDR, then the regular G9 at 240hz is the way to go but you'll need a solid GPU and a Diplay Pory cable to get the 240hz.

My question is, if I was to turn off dynamic contrast/auto dimming (and/or use Win 11 in SDR) would the issue you mention then not exist? I'm just trying to find out if at the very least I can have it so its no different than what I have now. I've been told that yes this can be done and it should be no different so I'm hoping you might be able to confirm that.

  • Really appreciate the comparison! I was stuck between the two, mostly just due to price difference. I just don't want to feel like I'm wasting money for a far inferior monitor. I'm looking for a GPU upgrade soon too, so that + a Neo is a bit much. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the original G9. $799 vs it's launch price is a bargain, especially when compared to the Neo. HDR isn't as important to me, and while not as good it still looks like a great upgrade to my 3840x1080 CHG49 for gaming/browsing.

  • Great review, the side by side really baffles me though. In the first games, the G9 seems to be producing a more realistic image, which is what I'm aiming for, whereas the Neo makes colors pop a bit too much and distorts them (gray looks green-ish for example). But then in the last game (is it Control?) the exact opposite happens. Grey is grey on the Neo and green on the original G9, the colors pop so much on the G9 that the carpet, skin and wood tones are all messed up and cartoony looking. Are the monitor settings the same between all clips?

  • The normal g9 goes fpr around 1300$ while the neo g9 here goes for around 2300$. So I wonder if its really worth the extra 1000$

    • I have the G9 and I don't really see any reason to upgrade.

    • @@Dire_Hit I just got the G9 and id only get the neo g9 as a second display in a year or two if the price drops down considerably. But looking into samsung tech if they end up releasing micro-led monitor that would be the ultimate monitor hands down and id skip the neo G9(mini-led) for that.
