Jonathan's notes on the Living In The Shadows:
This piece is about the struggle of being separated from the people you love. I imagine the anime character being forced to walk a lonely path by an otherworldly force.The music reflects their struggle to find their way home by trying to understand this force that is holding them back.Through overcoming a series of challenges, they are able to find the strength to return home, but only after numerous failed attempts and dangerous encounters.

  • The five hour version is definitely the most well flushed out and feels coherent as an opener. The overall wistful tone of the one hour version feels more like an end credits theme, alluding to variations on one main theme introduced through the movie while a slideshow of stylized representations of stills from pivotal moments fades from one image to the next, recapping the story and growth of the main hero. It feels like the viewers already know the characters.

The last anime he watched was Tokyo Ghoul. We watched it together and never finished it together. Took me about 15 months after he died to even start Watching Tokyo Ghoul again so that I could finish it and not leave myself wondering anymore.... I couldn't even watch the rest without crying a bit because of the memories and knowing that my dog would never know the ending of it... Anyways it's a really good piece to listen to...

When I saw your videos I was really inspired and then I started taking piano lessons. I started playing at recitals and it was actually really fun. Apparently I'm the only one in our family generation that can play a musical instrument. I only have an electronic keyboard. I'm saving up money for an actual piano. We have this shop called Aldi in Australia and it just has a bunch of random stuff and my brother just decided to buy an electronic keyboard. You just really inspired me and I don't think you should ever give up.🙂 From your biggest fan, Tatiana😃

    • I do TBH. I came here to see what he’d do in an hour, not what he’d spend an hour starting then finish later with help from his friend. I have mad respect for his skills either way, but the repeated “cheating” makes it feel more like he’s just desperate to cover up his mistakes. When you write music with a strict time limit, it’s going to have issues. I don’t get why he wouldn’t embrace them, because that’s what’s so interesting about the time limit concept - not every goal is met, so you have the perfect chance to go over what worked and what didn’t, and how you could improve it.

Now just imagine taking what you hear when humming or what you hear in your head when day dreaming and putting it on your instrument. That's how people do it, that's how he does it in this video. • I spent five years on-and-off writing a book only to be told (from a fellow anime fan who had no idea I was writing at all) "hey have you watched Sword Art Online?" _I had written SAO_ *All over.* Main character was even dressed in black robe, had a blue sword and was stuck in a game. I had never seen anything related to it at all. One of the points when I hated life the most.

      @SpiralPegasus@SpiralPegasus3 жыл бұрын
    • @@SpiralPegasus I mean, let's be fair. This was the first draft of your first book. It was never going to be more than practice writing. Practice writing isn't a bad thing. For 15 years I have participated in Nanowrimo. I have finished several of my first drafts and attempted to publish 0 of them. :) It's only now, literally millions of words of practice writing into the game, that I feel like I understand writing and am talented enough with the written word to complete a novel worthy of publication and reading by a mass audience. Don't be depressed that you practised the craft of writing. One of my novels is also about people stuck in a game. There's tons of ways to take it in the redraft that will separate it from SAO, or, you'll work on a new novel and like it better because you've grown due to your experience writing this one! For a game about a VR entrapment, as long as the ending is different, the progression through the game is different, and the motivation of the villain and hero is different, it won't matter if the setting is the same concept. SAO isn't the only story about VR. Tad Williams has a damn brilliant book series that's more or less about people getting trapped in VR... and a lot of other things going on too. It's the "other stuff" that doesn't make me go "aww this is just Otherland" when I watched SAO. Prefer another anime comparison? SAO is really just the Greed Island arc from Hunter x Hunter too... but the different characters and game mechanics make them stand out as very different anime. The characters and everything surrounding them are If you love what you wrote, edit it to be a bit different in the redraft. You were always going to have to rewrite it. No one's first draft of their first novel's going to stick, it's just a foundation. Maybe you love the character you made. Great, SAO doesn't own black robes and blue swords. Give your protagonist a different hair style, different name. Maybe your video game was indeed a multi-levelled challenge where you die in real life if you ever die in game. You could change the feeling of the stakes by having characters not know how far the game goes, not know what happens after death... just that they appear to have logged out. You could give them access to the real world, working via a crack to the internet with the police to try capture their captor before it's too late, all the while convincing players to hold back and stay in safe zones. It could still be a multi levelled game, but the challenges come from more than just climbing the tier. Fool with your mechanisms, morality, and specific characters if they cross over too strongly. You can use the premise still, and likely even your protagonist, if you make sure they're surrounded in something new and refreshing. Just watch or read some of the media about people stuck in games. You'll come up with something to rework it if you try, and if you don't, well, don't be too depressed, you tried to write a novel, you will have learned something from it, your next try will be better. You can always share it on a fanfic site as 'that time I accidentally wrote SOA before ever watching it'. Merely starting to write was part of your battle that some people can never overcome and five years of practice isn't peanuts, so don't stop now! You're just reaching the point where your writing might actually start turning out good! Push through the sadness! Write more stories!

      @calthyechild@calthyechild3 жыл бұрын
    • @@SpiralPegasus I for one liked the ideas of SAO but hated the execution of it. Too many non-writers think that because the surface appears the same, two similar stories are identical copies. There's no such thing as 'owning' an idea. As for your story, if your goal is to write for yourself, there's no reason to stop- you can even read SAO to see what alternate choices can be made. And if you want to write for others, having it be similar to SAO brings intertextuality, which is a good thing. It's like having someone else do writing the boring parts for you.

    • @@SpiralPegasus to be fair SAO is an ecchi rip off of the dot hack franchise so it's not as if SAO is very original in its own right. You can tweak certain aspects and make it more unique.

All it takes is some determination and hours and hours and hours of practice, as this man has clearly done himself. He LIVES Composition and Piano; He has acoustic foam, a Shure SM7B (A $400 Dynamic mic), Bass traps Has an XLR cable visible in the background, a Beautiful Keyboard/Piano, and more. The only thing missing here is good lighting in some shots, and his camera has a lot of motion blur due to improper lighting of the scene. His camera gets over-exposed, and the White balance is off. His lights are very high Kelvin, so it gives everything a blueshift, But his audio is his craft.
