Yemen facing world’s “worst famine in decades” - BBC News

2021 ж. 22 Ақп.
79 019 Рет қаралды

Yemen is at risk of the worst famine the world has seen in decades according to the United Nations.
The UN is warning that 16 million people will go hungry this year, including 400,000 children, who will suffer from severe acute malnutrition and could die without urgent treatment.
Yemen was already the Arab world’s poorest country before its civil war escalated in 2015. Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, control most of the country.
A Saudi-led coalition which is backed by the UK has been carrying out a bombing campaign, in support of Yemen’s internationally-recognised government.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by international correspondent Orla Guerin.

Doctors without borders/Medicions San Frontiers, are stripped down and the money goes to only two things, Doctors travel expenses to and from the area they are sent and medical supplies. They do not decide where to help people based on politics but instead on where it is needed. Many large charities have been investigated for fraud but Doctors without borders have nowhere to hide money fraudulently as they only have two responsibilities. These other charities use fraudulent and unbelievable expense funds to syphon the money away from its true cause. The only other transparent charity is the Disasters Emergency Committee.

    @MrNoobidoobidoo@MrNoobidoobidoo3 жыл бұрын
    • Wasting food isn’t the issue. Food is abundant, even in Yemen. The issue is that the war completely ravaged the country and economy and they can’t afford food. And no one is really helping those who can’t afford it, at least not enough. In this case, Saudi Arabia and Iran are the main players to blame, not richer countries wasting food. How would you expect to get all that “wasted” food to these people anyway? Most of it is fresh, aka highly perishable, and would not last the journey, even if it were viable to ship everyone’s leftovers over there (which it’s not). It’s amazing to me how people still blame eachother (your average everyday civilians) for “inaction” instead of the governments that are not only blatantly allowing this to continue, but who caused it in the first place! But that’s exactly what the ones in power want you to do. 🙄

Also they all hope that their children aren't going to be affected. Its very much 1840 when the industrial revolution happened. You see it happening everywhere there's poverty. The children eventually get work to help the family. We should be thankful for the luxuries we take for granted.

  • BBC news, thank you for covering this topic. I want to give financial help but I don’t trust any of the NGOs anymore. Nor do I have faith in any of the well-known charities who claim they give aid during such crisis. So what am I do when I see news like this? I can’t go there in person and I can’t provide financial means to help those people out of lack of trust for those claiming to be helping them. It really hurts my heart.
