Everything GREAT About Godzilla King of the Monsters!
Godzilla 2! Or is it Godzilla 2, Kong 3? To be honest I totally forget this was also a sequel to Skull Island...sooooo that's still on the list. Makes sense more now with the Godzilla vs. Kong Trailer out. King of the Monsters did better with audiences than critics so it's a perfect reason to find everything right with Godzilla!

What confuses me about critics liking 2014 more is that KOTM from a character perspective technically had better characters in terms of actually showing development. 2014 has the vast advantage in acting due to an amazing opening performance by Bryan Cranston, and having a generally more serious tone all around, but none of the characters actually did much or experienced much in the way of character development. They didn’t change or learn much to anything from their experiences, and besides Serizawa, they didn’t even have much in terms of static character arcs either. Meanwhile Mark in this movie actually has meaningful development in this movie that gives this movie meaning. He starts with a massive amount of trauma and baggage from Godzilla’s initial rampage, seeing Godzilla as nothing more than a threat, a waiting enemy to be feared. But as the movie progresses, he begins to see Godzilla more and more like he views his animals, learning from talks with Serizawa and Dr. Chen, and actually observing Godzilla, that Godzilla is not explicitly an evil menace. He’s the apex of nature, neither entirely a friend, nor explicitly an enemy of humans. He is an entity to be respected, treated with care, but not to be viewed with complete fear or disdain. As a side note, I love the analogy of Dr.Chen in this movie when she compares western and eastern mythology around dragons. The idea that western mythology often viewed dragons as monsters to be slain and conquered, whereas the east revered them as special spiritual beings, kinda feels like a commentary on the overall perception of godzilla across different audiences across the globe. And it even brings into question the perhaps hubris of many of the hero-centric man vs nature tales that spread in western stories over the centuries. This being a very on the nose environmental movie, it makes me think there was an intention to link such stories to the disregard of nature by many modern civilizations, who like with the analogy of the dragons, saw nature to be conquered rather than revered.
So 2014 had mostly static characters while KOTM had a share of dynamic characters. Agreed. And neither types of characters are bad.
@@kasaibouF29 Yes, but ones are better than the others
People liked 2014 so much just because Godzilla wasn’t prancing around the streets of New York and laying eggs
@@kasaibouF29 i don’t really think there were any really effective static story arcs in godzilla 2014 to be honest. Rather than say an emotional position of the characters in godzilla 2014 being challenged and them holding fast, the characters just kinda have stuff happen to them. They’re more witnesses than active characters I found.
@@maureenobrien4968 lol, I want a new movie in this modern godzilla franchise where godzilla has several tons of fish in front of him and he just rejects it. … wait, is THAT why there’s a scene explicitly showing Kong was eating a shitload of fish in godzilla vs kong? Yep. they aren’t my favourite, but they’re still Awesome.
keep *everything* crossed for a Mothra solo movie that introduces Battra and has the twins Zhang Zhi plays as lead characters his design in the Monsterverse should be particularly interesting - aesthetically he was always the "edgier" and fierce looking one compared to Mothra now that SHE has some edge to her (but no less beauty) I'm curious what direction they'd take Battra
Pretty much the same: Mothra and Rodan were always my favorites in the original movies, so to see both reimagined/updated and on the big screen was amazing. I got teary eyed almost every time Mothra was on screen. And the fact that they snuck in her song but also bits of her original sounds was so nostalgic but also so new and beautiful. Watching my two favs fight at the end was also pretty spectacular, even if Rodan was usually a good guy it was cool seeing the tag team monster showdown. I really do hope they bring Mothra back more because yes.
Exactly I love cgi
Critics have to understand that sometimes people just want giant monster action. I mean does anyone get invested in the characters in John Wick? No, we just love the badass, creative, and scary ways John kills the people who ruined his life.
This isn’t a critics need to understand moment, this is a misunderstanding, of course no one cares about the characters in John wick because they’re not the appeal, the appeal is the action which is made satisfying by the context, without that context there’s no reason to be engaged, Godzilla lacks this necessary context which is why they have to have 10 different characters constantly spout exposition of context we’ve never seen, and that makes the build up to the fights slow and monotonous and the fights themselves lacklustre and non engaging
Yes? I mean he’s no Atticus Finch, but when you watch his dog get murdered, yeah, I absolutely want him to shoot those assholes in the face. It’s not peak character writing but I absolutely do care, which is more than I can say for KOTM.

Problem is critics don't look at this from the perspective of a Godzilla fan. Or even from the perspective of someone who just likes a fun movie. As a Godzilla fan this film was great. Sure I have minor nitpicks in a few places. But I could tell this was made by people who appreciated and respected the source material. Which is about all I ask from a US Godzilla film. Which I felt this film went above and beyond that with it all. Just so many perfect moments for me as a fan. Especially due to the music. I got teary eyed just hearing a lot of it. Watching this made me appreciate some moments a bit more. Like I never caught that you can see the pattern of Mothra wings in Godzilla Nuclear pulse. Even the ending was perfect as someone who loved System of the Down growing up.
This isn’t a problem of critics or fans it’s a problem of misunderstanding, critics don’t care about the opinions of fans because that isn’t their job, it’s to analyse a films positive and negative merits from their own perspective and to share it to allow people who care (particularly film buffs) to make an informed decision about what they watch, a fan will obviously ignore and spout the films praises whereas a critic can give a more broad and overall look. Just enjoy the movie if you enjoyed it and stop obsessing over the thoughts of others, or if you’re gonna maybe try to understand their reasoning and don’t just go with the “they don’t understand it” message
@@wilddagz140 Well my main issue is them not reviewing the film based on the type of film it is. Like yea I understand that they want review it from the POV of a fan. But most all of them didn't even review it from the POV of them seeing a big popcorn monster flick. Most of the reviews I read were coming from people that were reviewing the film like they would The Shawshank Redemption or films similar to that. A lot of the reviews were them bitching about the film having to many Monster Fights and focuses to much on the Monsters. Which is just a dumb thing to bitch about in a Godzilla film. Hell I even went back and read the reviews from the 2014 Godzilla film from the same critics and in those they bitched about the film not having enough monster scenes in them. So these critics don't even know what the hell they wanted out of the film in the first place. All I'm asking for is for them to be consistent. Don't have a problem with one thing only for the next film to do exactly what you were bitching about. Only to then turn around and bitch about that as well.
@@wisewolftony I think the complaints about how much of the film Godzilla is in is particularly valid though, Godzilla films have never really been about Godzilla but more so the symbolism behind him, the original is obviously and well-documented to use Godzilla to emphasise the fear Japan had of atomic annihilation to foreign audiences through this unimaginable monster(etc etc I’ve got to assume someone as passionate about the character as you seem to be knows all this), and then the most recent Japanese film uses him to criticise the Japanese governments responses to disasters such as 2011 tsunami which occurred in Japan, both of these films had a clear and consistent message and where able to balance the character of Godzilla as a threat whilst writing compelling human scenes to engage us further in this threat. The issue comes to this film not really having a good thematic purpose for Godzilla, whether he’s an antagonist or protagonist I think this is a necessity for making a great Godzilla film and by spending so much time on this now pointless character instead of focusing on the messages the film wants to convey, ie a pro-climate activism message. I’m not sure which reviews your referring to and therefore I can’t gauge the relevancy of any of this to those reviews, but my point is there is certainly validity to criticising the amount of time we spend with this character depending on whether or not he fulfils a role, which I don’t think he does in this movie.
@@wilddagz140 that's why someone would go and see Shin Godzilla, not Godzilla fighting another giant monster. It'd be like going to watch a Transformers movie and expecting a great story, it was never about that. It's about watching a CGI extravaganza of giant robots beating the hell out of each other. Likewise with Godzilla. People don't go to watch Godzilla King Of The Monsters or a Godzilla vs movie for a poignant story with a message. They go watch em to see giant monsters beat the hell out of each other. For someone to not understand that is for them to have their heads so far up their own asses that they can't see the big picture. If someone's job is expressing the merits and critiques of movies, then that's a problem they shouldn't have.
@@propheinx2250 I understand that, but there's parts of this movie that really hold back the cgi spectacle. When comparing this film to the one that came out in 2014, people criticise how the movie cuts away from the action frequently, and it's true that this movie definitely has more action, it's just that it too cuts away from the action throughout in service of the human characters that are weaker. In the climax of both films, Godzilla fights the MUTOs and Gidorah, cutting away from both fights to show the human perspective, but in this film instead of offering a perspective that shows the scale of the fight going on in the surroundings, this film puts the drama centre stage and it takes away from the film imo. I doubt that people are saying there are too many monster fights when criticising this film (and if they are then that is pretty dumb), but the human drama that this movie centres around is pretty bad. It's better to rewatch the fights on youtube basically, while at least in the other films the tension and atmosphere built up, or the allegories for war or natural disasters adds to those films as a whole when the climax does happen. Sorry for the long rant but I think it's a non argument when people say that "critics don't like it because there's not enough humans" or not enough plot or whatever, because there are too many humans and the plot is heavily emphasised in the film, and both these things make the big monster fights less enjoyable. Still like the film though, but yeah I never cared for the whole divorce plot.

So, the line from Serizawa, "Sometimes, in order to heal our wounds, we have to make peace with the demons who created them.", is a throwaway line coming from anyone EXCEPT A JAPANESE MAN. Because they had to make peace with the nation that created the concept of Godzilla. Such a good line, in such the right place.
This, right here, this line was a nod to through-line that runs all the way through the movie, capped off by Godzilla charging into battle against a great ecological threat flanked by US military power. The (to some) radical idea that the same elements of the US and mankind as a whole that created these problems could work to correct them is the idea this movie puts forward, corny villain monologue or not. We CAN do something to help slow human-linked climate change. It will take massive effort, on a Titan-esque scale (heh) and take a fundamental change in how we as humans see our role on Earth, but it CAN be done.
Did you just make that up?
@Trevor Hensley No. He got it from an Omni Viewer video. A really _long_ Omni Viewer video. xD Honestly, I'm pretty sure that was just sarcasm on Serizawa's part.
@@BalthusHomewood Yeah, in their world I kind of agreed with the villains in large part. It all worked out in the end but how could they possibly have known it would? Also that Serizawa sacrifice scene is a play on the original where in that Film Serizawa sacrifices himself to kill Godzilla using the Oxygen Destroyer. In this one he sacrifices himself to save Godzilla
Who was almost dead from the Oxygen Destroyer. "Sometimes, the only way to heal our wounds is to make peace with the demons who made them." So gooooooood.
Wow what a twist in the monsterverse.
FTS Vectors Godzilla died in the original from the Oxygen Destroyer which Serizawa created. After Godzilla destroys Tokyo he uses the weapon to kill Godzilla but kills himself and destroys his notes on the weapon so no one will know how to make another
Benjamin Howard I am aware. I was basically finished your last sentence. In this one he sacrifices himself to save Godzilla... ...who was almost dead from the Oxygen Destroyer.
FTS Vectors I’m pretty sure he did actually die because his heart stopped. My guess was that he was near a tunnel and was dragged into the hollow earth and ended up in his lair and was revived but barely. I could be wrong though
I'm gonna point out a little detail I came up with; at the end, when Emma sacrifices herself for her family and is mortally wounded by Ghidorah, it calls back to earlier conversation that Chen and Mark had about Eastern Dragons vs. Western Dragons. Mark jokingly asks if Chen has any knowledge of slaying dragons, and she responds that is a western concept. Eastern dragons were benevolent, god-like creatures that brought about redemption. Back to the scene where Emma takes the ORCA away from Ghidorah, she does it to redeem herself from her deeds from the movie. It's a call-back and a merge of both dragon concepts: Ghidorah is a traditionally western, evil dragon that must be slain, but at the end brings about the redemption of a character (with the aptly-named track 'Redemption' playing in the background).
this is pretty good
Great video. Here is an additional win: During the final battle, as Mark just entered Boston to find Maddison, we stop and the camera makes a circle around Mark, showing Godzilla and Ghidorah fighting right behind him and all the chaos that ensues around him. That little scene is not only an example of this movie's absolutely stellar cinematography, but it also helps us get into Mark's shoes and understand the confusion and agony he is feeling as he tries to find his daughter.
I always have to cry when Serizawa dies, its just such a beautiful scene
2:11 Holy shit I didn't even realize that was the house from Endgame LOL I'm shocked you didn't mention Godzilla's original roar when he first shows up in Boston, or when Millie Bobby Brown is in Fenway Park, the radios are playing Ghidorah's original roar

I love the touch that the Monsters are the stars, so it very much is "Mothra as Herself"
One of the greatest things I love about this movie is that, instead of adding things that the producers might think will be better, they just took what they already had (from the original movies) like soundtrack and names and remake it. They didn't need to be original and add new "cooler" things because they understood that what the audience wanted was the old Godzilla fighting. Critics might think that a movie with such "unoriginality" might not be what people want but, as a fan, coming to a movie where all my favorite parts have been respected (not everything but nothing's perfect), feels good.
Also, as someone from Massachusetts, and who used to work in Boston, it was pretty cool seeing Boston be the big battle instead of the cliché New York or LA.
That and they’re trying to stay as far away from ‘98 Zilla as possible.

I’m so glad we have channels like yours that really excel at finding the great things about a movie. Critics were way too dismissive and I even think audiences didn’t appreciate the simplicity of this film, but ultimately it’s about giant monsters duking it out. It’s not a complicated story. The human storylines should be well written, yes but I’m not here for them - I’m here for Godzilla.
