Vince McMahon's name has been pretty much everywhere these days and with his connection to the UFC through TKO, one might assume they'd wanted to work together for a long time. Not so much. Over the years Vince himself has seen to it that the UFC would struggle with TV deals, commentators and even championship-level fighters. These are the times Vince McMahon personally went after the UFC.

One of those twins went into theater, the other one was the Uber competitive jock, but they’re both badasses. This very channel has actually done deep-dives that showcase how both industries share the same DNA. 2.) Vince McMahon is fucking insane.

    • It's weird to me that Vince considered the UFC a threat because I've long enjoyed both. If I want to see real "pro wrestling" I watch the UFC. The WWE's product is built more on storytelling in and out of the ring so even if it's "fake" it can still more than hold my attention.

    • I agree on their lineage, but I feel like as kayfabe has gone away and the embracing of the 'sports entertainment' slogan has come around in the several decades since, those old shoot days are almost entirely gone and it's pretty solidified. The entertainment facet is much more defined in WWE, UFC is less bloodsport and now actual sport. Feels like two totally separate lanes. But that's me speaking from my perspective as someone who really enjoys the nostalgia of the Attitude era and feeling like the modern stuff pretty distinctly isn't for me. (Nothing against WWE, I don't enjoy action movies much either) I know a lot of older fans feel the same way.

I don't follow WWE anymore haven't for 20 + years, maybe it's bigger than ever (plenty of things grow over time) but I am guessing there are a lot of people who stopped watching WWE once the UFC became more prominent. He didn't put them out of business, he bought them. He did the same thing with WWE. Then with the WWE Network, he went after the libraries of other promotions. He even partnered with certain indie promotions. If Vince McMahon sees you as competition, he will try to hurt you until he owns you or out of business.

  • UFC made WWE pretty much obsolete. Not just because of the fact that WWE is only scripted, but also because UFC is also simply way more entertaining. WWE and pro wrestling itself just doesn't feel authentic anymore (and mind you, I say this as an oldschool wrestling fan). UFC got the characters, the entertainment aspect, the competitiveness, the drama (only that it's not scripted, which makes it even more interesting), the press conferences... Why bother watching the "fake" version of it, if you got a much better alternative, that is on top of that also real, and authentic? UFC and MMA simply conquered this century so far. And they'll continue to conquer, while WWE and pro wrestling will continue to decrease.

    • WWE is trying it's best, they kinda are trying to emulate UFC a bit (with all the press conferences, which is pretty cool). They're doing better now compared to a few years ago, but it still won't change the outcome. The signs of the times have changed, even Vince couldn't change that. Finally, he lost this one. And even better to see, that he fucked off for good, for all the awful things he did behind the scenes. Dude might be a “genius”, but an absolute scumbag as a human being. Always was! Also destroyed pro wrestling by killing the territories, and making it a monopoly. No wonder this industry sucks today in general, since besides WWE there's nothing interesting to watch.

  • There is something you missed, but also kind of referenced. There's a Paul Heyman / Ariel Helwani interview from 10-15 years ago where Paul claims that he warned Vince about letting the UFC follow RAW on Spike. Vince had the ability when RAW was on Spike to approve of or veto any programming that lead-in to or followed Monday Night RAW. Heyman claims he warned Vince about the UFC potentially stealing the audience, because "that's more interesting".

    @Crayfish3D@Crayfish3D2 ай бұрын
    • It'd weird because I think there is at least some overlap in the audiences but watching one has never made me dislike the other. MMA is basically pro wrestling if the in-ring action was "real" but actual pro wrestling is more about the story (in ring and out) than the "fight" itself.

  • Fascinating video, and really just a sign that Vince has ALWAYS been like this. From destroying the territories in the 1980s, the Monday Night Wars and beating WCW in the 1990s, this BS with UFC and taking shots at TNA in the 2000s/2010s, his obsession with inter-show rivalries with the Brand Split/trying to make RAW and Smackdown out to be rival promotions even though they're both WWE shows, blowing up the super popular NXT show just to try and compete with AEW when they sprung up...the list goes on, and on, and on. And this is BEFORE mentioning him trying to compete outside of pro wrestling altogether - remember how the XFL was going to stick it to the NFL? How the WBF was going to revolutionise bodybuilding? 'Competitive maniac' is definitely one accurate way to describe VKM.
