Odysseus... the horse is here....
FINALLY, I HAVE FINISHED IT! Sorry to everyone who thought that I was dying, or at least I acted like I was when I was working on this. And I will give BIG thanks to my friend who was willing to pretend to drown in my bed so I could have some references.
I usually have a lot of references/easter eggs in my animatics. Usually, I have Disney, like Aladdin or Cinderella.
But this one, I used the short film "Augenblicken." That film is one of my pillars of why I became so interested in 2D animation! It's really good, but I must give a trigger warning that it's about SA. I actually had a plan that I would make an animatic similar/based on that short film, but it's about Hera and Zeus, and I scrapped it. But I couldn't help myself to be inspired by that film!
Thank you for watching!

    • Yeah, disproportionate retribution is kind of something all the Olympians are known for. Brutal as it is, killing all but a handful of Odysseus's men is pretty on-brand for someone like Poseidon. If it weren't for his desire to see Odysseus suffer that kind of loss, he probably would've just killed everyone and not given him the chance to open the bag.

By saying/doing something so unexpected Poseidon doesn't have the time to react before they're out. The way he delivers the line is jarring but that, I feel, is because it's intended to be. It needs to make a GOD go "??????" for a long enough moment that the remaining wind can drag them out of immediate reach.

      @michaeldeighton323@michaeldeighton3233 ай бұрын
    • @@michaeldeighton323 Lmao, using all those technical words to make a non-argument and then insult the quality. Bathos is used as an intentional anti-climax, a way of immediate subversion to segue into the next part where no clean transition exists. For Odysseus of all characters, it works the best. He's still a soldier. Everyone is dead. His ship is the only one that remains. But HE is still alive and he still has some men. He is an optimistic bastard by design. He remembers what he has, sees Poseidon's hubris as a weakness, then uses the tone shift to confuse the God enough to escape. With Poseidon DECIDING to let him go, with the sinister threat (Which is contained in the musical stings of the piano) that this escape is temporary and that Poseidon won't forget. Tone is carried by the instrumentation as much as the lyrics and their delivery. In comparison to the total piece, there's a more clear transition away from brief triumph to grief. It's only glaring because this is one song out of a series, so there's no continuation. You're condemning a part without the context of the whole. Would it work in a normal play? Probably not, but Musicals don't function the same as plays. They have different rules and standards. So take some time to learn those rules and standards before passing harsh judgement. These words are probably wasted and it will just get countered by semantics, grammatical mistakes, or just calling me a "Fan boy" or whatever like I've seen all around the criticisms that have been confronted. But I figured I'd throw them out there anyways for those who wish to either have a dialogue or see a perspective that goes into detail as to why these things work.

Very understandable that you would assume I was just ignorantly using them to try and sound smart, I do get that a lot, but that would I hope be a largely incorrect assumption in this case. To be clear, I just listened to the version sans animatic again (this song is really worming into my brain). Polyphemus likely already told Poseidon of Odysseus's gloating. Poseidon's face clearly depicts his disbelief. This mortal man, with his and his crew's lives on the line isn't taking the situation seriously. He's not showing fear in his apology, and appears to think that he worded it so nicely, so clearly he's safe from harm? Except he wasn't and he lost that smirk real quick. Amazing animation.

Which was a flat out lie since Odysseus literally shouted out his name to the Cyclops so he can always remember that it was he that blinded him. Also Odysseus never truly apologize about blinding Cyclops. Notice he never outright says he sorry, but rather framing it as a form of self-defense ('I only meant to disarm, I only want to run away'). • @@fbiuzz I don't even think this was why he did it. The entire song Poseidon is giving Odysseus a lesson on being ruthless because he is wanting to be good and merciful to everyone he meets. The entire song is Poseidon saying show no mercy to anyone. Then after all that he says to apologize? No. "The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible" Naivety is referring to a lack of wisdom or judgement that Odysseus thinks Poseidon will actually let him go. In Greek mythology Poseidon is the most petty among the gods. After that entire song, and with that background, why would Poseidon all of a sudden show mercy to the man that blinded his son, didn't kill him, and openly told him his name? Poseidon was never going to spare Odysseus or the fleet regardless of whether he apologized or not. It's only thanks to the bag of wind that Odysseus got his last ship away before they died as well.

Any gods associated with the underworld at all were given higher importance than those without underworld connections. Poseidon, being the underworld's king, was thus given top spot, while Zeus' domain of the sky, basically as far away from the underworld as you could get, left him with little authority in the pantheon. Things got shuffled around during the Grecian Dark Ages, and when we got to the other side, Zeus was now at top billing with the epithet Panhelle'nius, basically labelling him as king of everything, and Poseidon was split between his domain of the seas, and Hades as the new underworld king. However, Poseidon's reign of king of the dead wasn't fully forgotten, honored in his title of The Earthshaker.

Not saying this would make him free or stop Poseidon but it was still the only request Poseidon made for -maybe letting him live and Odysseus still didn't go through with it.

    @mariahmonica2001@mariahmonica20013 ай бұрын
    • There's an interesting pair of interpretations for this. The first is that Poseidon really doesn't want to go through with this, so he asks something simple on Odysseus in order to give him an out. Then when Odysseus throws it back in his face, going beyond mere pride (which Poseidon just called him out on and said 'that's what I hate.') and into full blown Hubris. So his lashing out and giving a 'cruel mercy' that cost nearly all his men their lives is entirely on Odysseus and a result of Poseidon's mercy being thoroughly run out. His line about how the world is dark and 'close your heart' is thus the give away that he really didn't want to, but now he truly must do terrible punishment. This lends itself to an interpretation of his lyrics about 'The line between Hope and Naiveté is often invisible.' where he is reminding himself that his hope Odysseus would take the lesson to heart and ruthlessly tear down his own pride to save his men's lives was Naïve. The second is that Poseidon knew exactly what kind of man Odysseus was and specifically crafted everything up to that point as a trap to get Odysseus to display Hubris to his face, where effectively no punishment could possibly be off the table. (See Sisyphus and Prometheus for examples) For the Olympian pantheon's universal rule is 'Do not disrespect the Gods to their face.' it's one of the very few things they all agree on, even the most merciful don't put up with that. The moment Odysseus failed to learn the lesson (that was presented in such a way as to prickle his pride) all those flowery words about how important the lesson was? That's him mocking Odysseus as hard as the dropped water baby did. It's 'This is you, this is what you sound like when you condescend to your betters.' followed up by the most cruel punishment Poseidon believed he could enact. (at least without someone else from the pantheon stepping in.) I lean towards the first, because it fits the theme and lesson going on here. Odysseus's pride is getting them all killed when they actually could have avoided that. But there is something compelling about the second, because the entire song is Poseidon expertly ripping into Odysseus, torturing him emotionally in a manner only a God's understanding could enable. Plus, this is a Deity, it can always be both. Poseidon came to smite and then had a second thought about it, so he offered Odysseus a chance to prove he wasn't what Poseidon hates so much. Odysseus promptly jumped up and down on that landmine in the worst way.

A moment that I love is at 1:47: in the brief second before he turns to Odysseus he looks so affectionate towards the baby in his arms - is this a memory of when Polyphemus was a baby? It's a good reminder that Poseidon was actually a decent divine parent compared to most of the pantheon. I also love 2:54, where he literally stops seeing Odysseus as a person. He's closing his heart to all the paperwork he's about to give Hades. Every god Odysseus has talked to so far - Zeus, Athena, Aeolus - has told Odysseus that he must walk a ruthless path. Poseidon, in all his eldritch equine glory, is giving him an object lesson in why he can't have his cake (remain unchanged by his experiences) and eat it too (return home).

      @ilyte1@ilyte13 ай бұрын
    • @@ilyte1I see your point. Personally, I think that it means more towards Poseidon's disgust. When he says the line you quoted I believe he is referring to Odysseus trying to be clever. The Gods in Greek mythology never go back on their word. At least not that I can remember. Usually they lay out a deal for the mortal with strict conditions, like with Hades and Orpheus. So, with that said, I think Poseidon genuinely would have let Odysseus go had he actually apologized. I mean, Odysseus is a prideful man, but he's earned it because he is actually clever. But Poseidon knows this. He's watching for it. So when he says "the line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible," seems like he's calling Odysseus out for trying to pull one over on him. In a very "You really tried that. With me. After everything I just showed you. I can't tell if you were being hopeful that I wouldn't catch that or are just so naive you don't truly understand the situation you're in." And when Odysseus didn't apologize, after Poseidon clearly laid out the terms of the deal, he followed through with what he said would happen. He sank the ships and drowned most of the men.

Powerful anyimal, and holy shit, somehow terrifying. The way he shapeshifts so fluidly too. The water arm as he grabs Odysseus, THE WAY HE CRAWLS ON THE RAILINGS, gives me the shivers. I love how rough he is with Odysseus, ruthless indeed. And the mocking of “killing a son” with Hector’s baby, dropping the baby the same way Odysseus dropped the kid over the wall. And the way he shakes Odysseus around, like the dude is being tossed by the wave, almost telegraphing what Poseidon is about to do to the fleet? Brilliant. Chef’s kiss. And Odysseus, clearly not in control probably for the first time in the musical, clearly being mentally thrown too, beside the physical. How he is trying to aim for manipulative with the apology (really well drawn, little exaggerations of expression and movement), and then yet again getting thrown by what happens. This is so good, it’s out of this world. This is the first animatic where i was actually afraid of the god depicted. It is so obvious that they are unequipped to deal with what is happening. The way you drew the fleed goinf down is, again, terrifying. Their wide eyes, the way their arms claw for the surface…freaking brilliant. I have no words for how amazing this animatic is. And how Poseidon just stands there at the end…chilld. Absolute chills. You are so good, holy shit, I love everything about it (and while writing this comment finished my 4th watch :) )

It's very clearly saying "I'm sorry, we didn't mean to cause any injury, this was all a misunderstanding" And further, Poseidon *knows* this I think a more fitting reading is that Poseidon wanted Odysseus to show "ruthlessness." Even after that speech and threat, Odysseus still was an upstanding guy who genuinely felt bad. Poseidon says he wants Odysseus to learn Poseidon's worldview, but instead he clings to "false righteousness," which is what makes Poseidon decide to go for the kill. Though, after the speech on "ruthlessness is mercy" ... He probably would've gone for the kill no matter what Odysseus did!

    • @@mr.alpaca2663Actually Odysseus never apologize for hurting the Cyclops. Noticably he is trying to frame it as a form of self-defense ('we only hurt him to disarm him', we only wanted to escape'). Which while true would only pissed off Posiedon more. Additionally the part of Odysseus 'taking no pleasure in his pain' is a downright lie, since the reason Odysseus shouted his name is so the Cyclops can always remember who blinded him.

    • @@fbiuzz I consider the explanation a valid apology because the song logically has to shorten the "actual" words of the characters. This is also noticable in "Horse and the Infant" where Odysseus gives commands to, like, 8 out of several hundred men or "Keep your friends close" when the explanation of the Bag of the Winds was kept to just a couple of lines. Hence, my interpretation of the apology is based on the tone as much as the words, which is definitely apologetic. The words themselves support this by being an explanation for the misunderstanding.

    • @@mr.alpaca2663 The names Odysseus mentions in Horse and the Infant are more or less the other major players in the Trojan War alongside Odysseus - frequently kings, princes and great warriors. Agamemnon was the _leader_ of the Greek army, Menelaus was his brother, Nestor was an elderly king but veteran warrior, Diomedes, Teucer, Ajax the Lesser and Neoptolemus were all princes. If Odysseus is commanding them, then it can be assumed that any of their own men would also be following those orders.

  • This is probably my favorite design/portrail of Poseidon across all media.

  • The horse form of Posidion is genius, especially when you look at how some mythologies like Celtic and Nordic have monstrous horses in some of their stories that actively hunt and drown travellers.

  • I love how you clearly do your research in this. Poseidon is in one moment a horse and moments where it's a horse/dolphin swirling in the ocean. Lots of thoughts and details, clearly a lot of hard work was put into this. Now I gotta check out more of your work.

    • I think he became more hippocampus once he submerged which is a cross between horse and fish. Like a merhorse.

  • I just adore how you even introduce Posideon making clear of his God of Horses as well before appearing as a man before the bow of the ship. His movements are so fluid and you get the sense he is the water himself as he constantly shifts and threatens Odysseus 's crew with death shoving his ships just enough to get the point. And the way Posideon shows the baby, 1:45 calling back to Troy where Odysseus did the exact same thing is genius! 1:50 Posideon knew he was capable of ruthlessness and the fact he didn't get the job done is hypocritical when Odysseus already crossed the line with Astyanax. Mercy had a price and Odysseus understood it then why shouldn't he understand it with Polyphemus? This is the god of the oceans and sea and he is making it very clear what he is and Odysseus and his crew are powerless to get in his way. I also love how you portrayed Odysseus it reminds me of another animatic with Polyphemus and trying to use his words to get his way out of it almost hoping he would. He even looks smug, and arrogant ( 2:41 - 2:46 ) almost like in the scene he revealed his name to the Polyphemus. 1:58 And the way Posideon ruthlessly puts an end to any semblance of that notion of mercy and the chaos, the rough drawings used to depict the drowning of the rest of his crew is WOW! It's brutal and great. I adore how mosterous Posideon is in the scene as the horse he first appeared as, killing hundred of men in seconds. you even used watercolours to emphasis the point. Smudging their lives in darkness It's amazing! And while Odysseus ultimately escapes you get the sense of how Posideon still shadows the journey, a dark reminder.

    • I’m still kinda focusing on the moment where Poseidon slaps and yanks Odysseus around. You can clearly see the many emotions that the guy goes through.

  • I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I absolutely love the contrast at the start. Odysseus and his men are shown on the ship, meanwhile as soon as Poseidon appears, he takes up the ENTIRE FRAME. It's just such a nice way to show how small they all are, compared to one of the prime gods of the Greek mythos. I mean this one being has complete dominion over the sea, so him swelling over the ship displays that immense power very well.

  • I kept trying to figure out why the part with the drowning men screaming "captain" kept sticking out so much. It's because the pattern is incomplete by one. Matching the song, it should've had one more "captain" but it was cut short suddenly like their lives. Great song. Also: Dude, please open your bag BEFORE Posidon kills everyone.

  • There is a brutal irony to not having killed the Cyclops after killing Hector's child back in Troy in order to avoid a future fate. Having Posiedon holding a shaow child as he sang that line was a brutal reminder of what Odysseus has already done, a demonstartably even more ruthless action than killing the Cyclops would have been.
