This video shows how to remove a pilot bearing from a flywheel using bread instead of an expensive puller. We use a 1.3L Suzuki Samurai engine as our example but it will work just as well on other engines. This procedure will work not only on pilot bearings but pilot bushings as well. Please visit us a www.lowrangeoffroad.com for all your Suzuki and Toyota parts needs.
Stuff with bread, hammer, and repeat. Sounds like my last 20 relationships.
yikes
Almost fucking choked on that one - kudos..
Lol
That was funny.
Wish I had seen this 50 years ago. So simple but so effective! Thanks!
Is this for real, and does it work? Gotta try this😀
@@edwin9859 Works on any 96-2007 Manual Audi and Volkswagens. Used it on my 97 A4 1.8t 5 speed and my 2002 S4 2.7tt 6 speed
F-ING GENIUS!!! This alone made the entire internet worthwhile
Can’t wait to buy some Snap-On Whole Wheat bread! 🍞 🔧
Only 599.99 a piece!!!
They would still charge an arm and a leg for it.
Are you almost done paying it off?
Instablaster...
🤣
This actually worked! Bread is much cheaper than a slide hammer. Made my day
Unbelievable, huh? I was so relieved when I finally had enough bread jammed in to finally see the bearing move. Yeah, this is the way to get your pilot bearing out..
Thanks. I saw this video a while back and hadn't really thought about it again. I ran into the same situation earlier this week. I work in plant maintenance and the line was ready to go back up soon. I was trying all kinds of stuff. I was starting to get worried until I remembered this video. This bearing was oxidized bad too. I thought there was no way this could work. I did it and it worked like a charm. You really helped me out of a bind.
Thank you so much for this tip, I tried it on a pilot bearing that is pressed into a crankshaft, and it worked like a charm! Amazing technique. Grease would never work, it would just be pushed out through the balls without doing anything. Great tip, one of the best I've seen in the automotive world.
Grease does work ive done it plenty of times. Spiggot bearings are sealed. Not saying that bread doesnt work though.
You can use candle also.
I tried it and can't believe it. IT WORKS! saved me a trip to the tool shop and 69 bucks. only took a whole 3 min. WOW thanks for the video
Just pulled a knackered pilot bearing out of my old Volvo with this method, thanks so much for posting.

Old techniques are the best very good demonstration
Might work be a cheap try.
Mate i have to thank you. This video is absolutely brilliant and sorted our problem yesterday removing this bearing from a Subaru. Genius. Keep these types on f videos coming...
This works 100 percent. You just need a TIGHT fitting bolt, or an old clutch alignment tool works wonders. I broke 2 pullers from autozone, and tried a grease gun...this was the best thing...since sliced bread.
haha nice ^^
Very clever technique, my father taught me that twenty-some years ago. Nice and helpful video, very rare on youtube.
This freaking works! Thanks for the video. Although I was so excited I told my wife about it and she said oh yeah I've done that before making this highly accomplished mechanic feel dumb but in all fairness she used to rough in electrical on houses and lay tile!
Dude - I owe you a beer! I have been struggling to get the pilot bushing out of my 1950 Chevy (engine in the car, bushing in the crank not the flywheel). Without success I tried two different pilot bearing pullers and even tried threading a bolt into the pilot bushing to use a homemade puller, bushing didn't even budge. I was skeptical when I watched your video, but I was also out of ideas. I ground the threads down a bit on a 7-inch long 5/8-inch bolt to match the ID of the bushing (I could easily rotate the bolt in the bushing but not wiggle it l back and forth). I think I pounded an entire slice in and then switched to a bigger hammer. Low and behold after a few hard blows with the bigger hammer it started coming out! And to top it off now my engine is fortified with 8 essential vitamins! In all seriousness thanks for a great video!
I've actually done this and it works even better than the old grease trick. Definitely worth the piece of bread 👌
Me to in the old days grease worked.
Thanks, this just saved me a trip to the parts store.
Worked for me, easily got the bearing out. No sweat, thanks a lot.
I tried the same thing with grease and couldn't get it. Watched this video and switched to bread. Worked just like the video! Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it!
gotta love these old mechanic tricks- thanks for sharing!
I've learned something today. Thank You!
Never saw it done with bread before, cool. The cavity also looks very clean after the bread was out
As long as they're double sealed/shielded bearing. I've tried this bread method (or grease, wet paper, etc) on single shielded bearing (shield facing up obviously) and the bread just push the metal shield off the bearing.
Tried it on my sons scooter, was going to buy a set of blind bearing pullers ££££££ but the bread worked great : ) nice vid.
Works GREAT on pilot bearings that are too small for pilot bearing pullers. Also, it’s much easier to fill it behind the bearing with bread than it is with grease.
Anyone that thinks this might be crazy, it absolutely works. I remember my brother calling me for help finishing up a clutch job on his Jeep. We then realize we don't have a puller for the pilot bushing. I do some quick Googling, find this method, and my brother was like "I don't have any bread." I look over at the remnants of the Arby's sandwich I had lying there and pull the bread from it, and within a few minutes the bushing was out and we were going back together.
This works GREAT. Used this method today came out like a champ
Who ever came up with this idea is a genius 👏
Sitting here eating bread while watching this vid 😂
Crank shaft under fly wheel bearing open helpful tips , I like sir
That was awesome. I've been a tech for over 30 years and never seen anything like this.
Brilliant !! I used this idea as far back as 1955 yes I'm an old dog. But so good that you have taken the time to explain it to the next generation If and only if you had a very accurate pilot you could use grease as I once did but cleaning it up away from the plate was a drag. Bread is good Thanks for the upload
there's another trick in a similar vein to this video, extremely useful for loosening or tightening crank pulley bolts: wrap the longest old v belt you have around the accessory pulley that's the shortest distance from the crank, then shove the excess slack in between the pulley grooves and the belt in the direction you need to turn the breaker bar in. you can then loosen or tighten pulley belts without needing any special tools besides a breaker bar, or a floor jack handle on top of a breaker bar.
@@edbo10 Can you link to a video of this trick?
@@AmosHayes kzhead.info/sun/dbiyo9F5r4eVoa8/bejne.html skip to 0:27 though, it has an insanely long intro. when loosening with a breaker bar, try to jerk it, instead of applying constant force. Nuts and bolts are much less likely to break or strip with shock loads, which is why hammering/jerking/yanking a tool that's on a fastener is better than just trying to twist it off like you would a screw cap container.
This is brilliant. I'm doing a clutch in two days, and will try this.
If you look at that pilot bearing it looks like it's brand new it was just installed so it might be easier to come out but I've done it many a times and I had to buy the tool cuz it's the easiest way that breath it doesn't always work
Did it work for you?
What kind of bread works best? The bread my girlfriend makes can be used as sandpaper.
Use dempsters lmao I cant help but laugh
so when you do a clutch job. just cut the crust off the kids lunch sandwich. Or your own. Thats recycling.
the more chemicals that make it soft the better
Self raising !
This video just changed my life !
Yep. Works a treat. Just did it to a 1995 G16B Vitara. Didn't even need a whole slice of fresh bread. Thanks very much.
Old fart here, helping a youngster. I told him about the bread, he didnt believe me, so I showed him this, and filmed him accomplishing same. I told him to pre chew his bread a little...it was a fun day. thanks. your vid much better than mine. its amazing how cuss words find a camera.
I'm an old fart too...done this in 1955..but its good to show others how to do it
been wrenchin on engines for 30 years and had never seen this...now I bring an extra sandwich in my lunchbox just in case.
Doesnt work
Damn this has got to be on of the best videos i’ve ever seen, and i just tried it and it works really well!! thanks for saving me a bunch of money!!!!
great to have some old school skills for our young generation, great job
Pack with bread, then bake at 350°F for twenty minutes. The bearing will slip right out and your work space will smell wonderful!
Kat Deville lmmfao!! Thats a good one
But the clutch will be toast.
I tried this but just ended up with a flock of pigeons tormenting me while I worked.
😂😂
Just when I thought that I had heard everything this guy comes up the idea of removing a pilot bearing with bread of all things. I take my hat off to you.
This worked flawlessly for me, thanks!!
What is the purpose of brea? Diplacing the bearing by exercising reverse presure in out???
Pretty much. Bread, grease , paper towels all same concept gets behind it and as you pack it in the center it pushes the bearing out.
Didnt have a bearing puller and snap on truck didnt have bread :(
Hehe
Do not worry,if they find out the trick, will sell and the bread to the garages for 1000$ a piece with 10 slices, that's 100$ per slice. plus you get a lifetime warranty,
I will see snap-on making bread... $200 a pound! 😂
Try Cornwell next time.
Damp paper towel or napkin works too
Amazing! Havent seen an useful video like this for a long time
Used grease before but this worked grate and alot less messy Thanks alot man!
Very clever
Thanks , Old trick we thought we would share and hopefully it helps someone out.
I thought this was a joke hahaha going to use this tip later on
Thank you sir. You saved us some time and money today!!!
My uncle showed me this today, it worked great!
Can the bread still be eaten when you are done?
Yes.
J Smith lol
Yes, best served with differential oil dip.
J Smith why bread use grease
J Smith can the boiled cassava still be eaten whe you are done
Plasticine or play-dough does the job if there is no bread. Don't let the kids see you do this or every hole will be rammed!
Who has those items but doesn't have bread tho?
" ... or every hole will be rammed!" My kids did so ... ... but they didn't fill them with bread
Why do I feel that you learnt that "not letting your kids see" part the hard way?
100% worked for me, just did it! Other mechanics in my shop said it wouldn't work.
Thanks for your sharing about how to full out pilot bearing, very nice master
Just when I thought I had seen it all 🤣😱
That was awesome ! Which works best ? White or whole wheat ? lol
Doesn't really matter as long as it is moist. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Whole, because it goes into the hole easier!
I think white bread works best. It's a bit softer then wheat bread.
or a flour tortilla
Wheat bread so your engine can lose some weight
Creates a 'hydraulic' effect to push bearing out! Ingenious!
Dear sir!Truly useful Technic, hope all the trainee mechanic must watch it,isn't it right!!!!!!
The same working principle as the brake systems have.
only if it's expired bread. I hate wasting food. This can be done using wet paper as well. soak em shred em and pack the hole and repeat the shown process
Great tip. Thanks.
Да хлеба жалко
Ya can't afford to spare a 5 cent piece of bread? Were you raised in the depression era lol, STHF hasn't happened yet.
Not sure about you but i can go to my local grocery store and get a loaf for a dollar. Pretty cheap if u ask me
this actually works, I used a cut off 1/2" drive extension and bread to remove the pilot bearing on my SBC. Alot cleaner than the grease method
Brilliant tried my own home made puller waste of time bread and a bolt 15 min had it out thanks for the info keep it coming. Used 1 wholemeal crust
I understand why the upload is needed. To educate those that DONT know this. Any technician worth their salt would have known this trick already. Good production though otherwise with clear instructions for the noobs.
Unfortunately a lot of new technicians don't know some of these little tricks because they are spoiled with always having the right tool for the job.
Ernesto Lugo It’s totally obvious that you never heard of this before! Nice
Well chances are if you do this kind of stuff for a living after awhile you’re going to invest in the right tools.
In your comment you established a foundation of argument so that you could pat yourself on the back for allegedly knowing this "trick". You have a self-esteem problem.
Ernesto Lugo Its not that Im not worth my salt its that I work on every car truck tractor catterpillar john deere peterbuilt equiptment you can think of and guarantee know more than you but the thing is I have a tool for every fucking thing you can imagine and can afford to keep it that way.
still have to remove the flywheel for resurfacing
Agreed that should be done, but some people are just changing the bearing also this tip can be used on pilot bearings in other locations like we did here. kzhead.info/sun/lZSrhrWIbnhseYE/bejne.html
dennis doroshenko naa let it "develop".
dennis doroshenko the bearing is in the crankshaft not the flywheel.
David's Favorite Videos looks like it's on the flywheel to me.
The last time I had to do this job I grabbed a handful of paper from my shredder and put it in a bucket of water. I used the bread for my sandwich and when finished I packed the bearing cavity with soggy paper and followed the rest of your instructions.
This is amazing. You just saved me $80
I use old wet newspapers, works just as good. 🤣🤣
Now i know why my mechanic friend always have a loaf of bread on his tool box.
I have had some epic battles with that dam pilot shaft bearings , i cant wait to try this out thanx
Damn I've been doing it wrong for more than 25 years!!! That's wayyyy less messy than grease!!! Thanks for sharing! 👍😎
soap is better than bread
but soap has such a bad taste ;)
Some countries consider bread as Holy-stuff. But this way to pull out is interesting
I tried it but dawn dish soap just squirts out...lol
Candle
Тряпку нарежьте на полоски , смочить в масле и забить !!! Зачем хлеб портить. Можно мыло в место хлеба!!!
Обычная мокрая газета
пластилин
Best video on KZhead.
Lol this is awesome! I usually use greaze, but never thought about bread 😂
Did Jesus Christ give you this solution while you were on your way to the light and sent you back? Because no mortal could've come up with it.
Alvarez Eduardo " i am the bread of life "
Jon Mall “I AM” not i am
Jurietto Mitshi Kunai Move forward.
@Yard Sale Dale I bet that was a powerful experience.
Remove the bread after and tell yo gal to make you a damn sammich.
Amazing tips broo i haved try it with bread and it works!! thanks mate.😄
Very useful and amazing information to know. Thank you.

this method is known even before your birth
Free Soul قصة حب
it's amazing how it simple, good work :)
Bar soap works well too. Plus it leaves the motor smelling fresh and clean!!!!
Ha! Real engineering! Excellent work.
Thank you, the bread worked !
haha love it, I tried this with grease years ago and failed as the grease was too thin and it just squirted out, I can see that moist bread is much thicker and doesn't escape when hit like the grease can! Using bread as a hydraulic fluid is pretty cool and I can name another use for soft bread for auto repairs which is pushing it into a LEAKING RADIATOR, it can stop the leak and get you home and I heard a story from someone who continued to drive the car for a few thousand miles without it leaking before the rad was replaced :-)
Used to use wheel bearing grease , works good . Never tried with MP grease
Great vid!!! I'll be trying this if my puller doesnt work!
Worked like a dream thank you
Thanks for the heads up on the way to get that done
Great trip - I’ve been told that grease can be used for blind bearing removal but I’ve never tried it, I think the viscosity of the grease i normally use is too thin but the bread ‘paste’ as we can see just the thing and easily obtainable!👍 do you think windowpane putty would do the same job?🤔 John🇬🇧
The wax of a candle too... cheers from México city
Years ago these bearing was called a spigot bearing, nothing as solid as your one but how we got the bearing out was fill the hole up with Greece same thing get a good fitting bolt and hit with a hammer, and the grease would push it out as the same as the bread, good video and nice to see different ways kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍
Same here - I remember using heavy grease to remove the spigot bearing on my Morris Minor.
Used this trick the other day, with an oversize bolt grind down to right size and some exhaust repair paste :P worked like a charm ;)
This is dark magic and I love this
Practical genius!
This is amazing! Thank you! 😃👍
VERY VERY CLEVER!!! thanks man!!!
Golden knowledge !
It helped me so much Thank you....😁
