I've hoped all my life for this wingsuit kind of flying. Now I'm 87, so I guess it's too late for me. But it's nice to know my grandchildren will be able to fly.
Go for it.
Not too late unless you're too scared... What do you want to do, Live Forever???
Never say never!
If not this, perhaps skydiving for you?
@Brian Mitchell I figure I'm close enough... Being 65... And I don't want to live forever! As far as I, and my similarly aged friends, can tell the so called "Golden Years" AREN'T! So might as well have fun while we're here.
0:53 "I was able to jump higher and higher until it started to hurt and then I had the idea I have to go start skydiving." This guy is hilarious! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
"It's a bird!" "No, it's a plane!" "Actually, it's Peter."
Even though I don’t see myself wing suit flying of any sort, it makes me feel wonderful that advancements such as this continually evolve changing the landscape of what can be done.
I'm not sure which one is stronger: my will to flight like a bird, or my fear of heights. That must've felt amazing. What an achievement. Congratulations!!
Remember, it's not the fall that scares us, it's the sudden stop at the end.
I imagine once you do it once there's no going back. You'd probably do it for as long as you can after that is what I mean.
Just don't fly higher than a couple feet off the ground. But odds are, you then might find you would prefer the height after all.
A fastest way to de.
I'm not scared of heights because I'm not scared of falling. It's really just the sudden stop at the bottom that I don't particularly like.
This is one for the history books. I’m serious. How long has flight like this been in man’s imagination?
sure, we'll see once we're able to take off with this. otherwise, flight doesn't mean all that much if you have to jump from a very high place first lol
@@thefolder69 you’ve got to understand that this kind of tech is JUST being invented of course it’s gonna take time until we make it efficient, this is one of the first few prototypes and as time progresses we’ll get better parts
@@thefolder69 Well between this and the "iron man" jetpack system, I think it won't be long. I imagine a lightweight but powerful exoskeleton to prevent your arms and legs breaking from the forces being applied by the electric jets. Combine it with a wingsuit and probably this chestmounted thing too and you could fly from hover and also high speeds like this.
@@GamePhysics The limiting factor is energy consumption, not propulsion. This is also why we don't see many electric variations of jetpacks.
@thefolder69 there's already jetpacks with wings that people flew like 8 years ago like the jetman in dubai. Can take off from the ground and fly alongside airplanes
The evolution of flight keeps expanding
Hilarious 😂
These dudes that are willing to do these types of things are truly badass.
As someone who has been skydiving, I can only imagine what it must feel like! With new technology comes new inventions! Really awesome!
Seriously cool stuff
One day learn how to control gravity!
You skydiver people are brave. I just can’t do it. I’m a pilot and I’m sticking with the plane….
glad you could grace us with your vast experience and wisdom
With new technology comes new horizons.
Having dreamed of flying like a bird all my life, I love this, while far too old to try it, tonight I shall dream again .
It would be beautiful to fly
This thing will be in the metaverse in no time.
fk🤮 i really don't want to get old 😫
Get an ultralight airplane. Aerolite 103 or something like that no license required, you aren't too old!
John, in dreams you are free to fly anywhere your Heart/Soul desires, I'm sure you know !!!
Wow, I'm an aviation enthusiast and I always wanted to become a pilot but to see what Peter has invented with the assistance of BMW is truly remarkable engineering!!! I am a big cheerleader when someone thinks of the impossible making it POSSIBLE! I am very proud of you Peter and your entire team and I look forward towards your next leap in your extreme adventures! So, from one inventor to another Touché my friend! Herzlichen Glückwunsch Peter!
WOW! Watching him climb so fast! That was wonderful.
It's really an amazing flight and a huge milestone of humankind against the gravity by using electric power. Congrats Hr. Salzman!
'Fer sure, and so cool that we live in such an incredible time... when within our own lifetimes, we can go to Mars, custom design our DNA, and truly fly like a bird!

I love how he went from "falling down from high heights hurts" but then turns around and says let's go skydiving 😂😂😂
Right - They show he was jumping off buildings into cardboard boxes and he wanted to go bigger - From here I think he was thinking - "How do I jump from ever increasing heights without getting hurt like I do when I jump from a 4 story building into cardboard boxes??" - Answer - "how about a Parachute!?!?"

I have been skydiving ever since I was 19 and getting to witness such innovation is mind bending. It is not easy to maneuver swiftly in that suit and adding that electric jet can even make turning a little harder as your speed increases hence you get little time to take sharp turns. I don't know how he would manage it but this surely seems incredibly amazing to me.
Add a wing chute for slower flight o it looks like you have already nevermind.
Amazing accomplishment. It would have been really cool to actually have an unclipped video of the entire flight. :-)
Great achievement so far. Pilot must felt like Superman power. Love to see more advanced developments
Who say there's no such thing as Superman.
@@sootuckchoong7077 well there isn't, but science helps bridge the gap to be LIKE superman, in a way.
Those "impellers" are called ducted fans and they've been around since the 60s. Still an amazing design.
1932 was the first "ducted fan" aircraft flight
Thank you, this bugged me so much. Not to mention impellers exist but he didn't create them.
they are also called impellers and they have been around since the 1910s actually
The wind tunnel they tested it in was an impeller
Yes, we also use impellers to pump water. That has been around for a super long time!
The dream we all had as a kid, thanks for your courage and determination
Incredible technology. Love to see its development. Hope they gather more aviation engineers to make it run longer and better.
What a time to be alive😃 amazing!
Haha we get the best and the worst all at the same time 🤣👍
What a way to die 👀👌
I was gonna say the exact same thing. Lucky to live in this age of technology. 💪😃
Same words when men invented the wheel or discovered the fire.
Yeah The pandemic and failing economies rock
The speed with which technology moves ahead will surely bring higher speeds and more time in the air. It is just amazing how curious people in the world, with dreams and determination, can achieve such great things that not many years previous were considered impossible. Congratulations Salzmann and team. Keep pushing forward.
Li-ion battery technology hasn't progressed overly much in the last two decades. Not sure what crack you are smoking. The energy density of batteries is still about 1% of gasoline. Long story short, this is just a PR stunt.
@@thengine7 I think you're missing his point being that people have deemed a human flying like a bird impossible (vehicles don't count). Wingsuits are the closest we have gotten, and there are even people making jetpack prototypes but they are still very limited to what they can do. To be able to not just glide but actually fly like this is incredible, it's like a real modern day Icarus (except the whole flying too close to the sun part).
@@skulkingrogue7472 the point is that it's flying regardless of the motor. The motor adds next to nothing.
@@thengine7 you're joking right? this is the first version of it, he said at the end of the video that there were improvements to be made. And it did help him, you can clearly see at 3:51 he gained a decent bit of height on the third mountain compared to the other 2 flying to his left, He also doubled his speed.
some man no wahn live to bumbo claat
It makes total sense to have the power unit mounted below the chest. This puts the centerline of thrust below the centerline of drag and naturally causes a pitch up moment under power which is easy to modulate through the thrust control. Pretty cool!
That was a great idea. Congratts
The first step to some kind of free flying suit. Can't wait to see how far this design and product goes. Would be crazy to see a system where the thrusters are built into the wing suit and have the whole suit be more like a vehicle you could wear
There is jet wing suits. They have hard wings though.
@@themiddleman9376 Hard is propably much better for efficiency. Way less problems with constant misaligment of the trust vector relative to the aerodynamic surfaces surfaces. Also having an actual wing instead of an (suboptimaly shaped human) lifting body is prop also good for efficency.
@@TheShowdown16 yeah I know. I just said that because technically it is not a wing suit in the traditional sense. More like an airplane strapped to the back.
Jetman is on KZhead and it's exactly that, but still needs the initial drop to reach flying speed.
"Vehicle you could wear." You mean an ultralight airplane, maybe. Except that an ultralight would be much easier to fly and probably a lot safer. And you wouldn't need to be dropped out of a helicopter. You could just take off from a runway. Or you could get one of those powered paraglider things.
Amazing! The feeling must be incredible to be this close to flying with arms out as we did as kids. Thanks for sharing.
I didnt have the ability to fly as kid
:*(
My friend had the ability to fly as kid but he didn’t live very long. I believe he could fly though no one ever saw him do it but… what tf is my comment haha
Апа1могопАпа1рогп О$Т👎💩🖕🤢🤮💩
I had a more strange experience, as a kid I could fly but one day I woke up with all my limbs amputated leaving me with only my third leg and I thought I would never fly again. As I got older I could produce more thrust with my third leg and trained with women until I could fly again taking advantage of a helicopter type movement. That’s my story. Never give up kids. 💯😤
Absolutely amazing and for someone who's been skydiving, I want to start going again!!!
Can you imagine how excited he was? I'm pretty sure his heart was ecstatic
I've got one thing to say about this..... Awesome!!! Technology sometimes makes me wish I were younger but only until I look at what Technology has enabled our world to become, then I'm glad to be on the old side of life.
oh Jesus, the tech is crap ! do some research before foaming at the mouth over something you clearly know nothing about !. here's a hint-battery energy density versus chemical fuels, eg; a miniature jet engine, like the ones they use for model planes and jet's

This ISNT the first elected suit. A guy in Kentucky made a BADASS one a couple of yrs ago that would leave this one sitting still. Why he's not being recognized as having the first is crazy but im sure he has a reason. I guess he didn't think anybody else would come up with one so quickly who knows. I just know I saw the videos 2 yrs ago and it blew me away. I'm sure the videos are still here on KZhead. If you see those videos you too will be impressed and see how much faster it is then this one.
Lol...I LITERALLY basically said the same thing. The guys name was Ken something. I also agree that it much faster then this one. It is kinda sad he not going to be recognized for having the 1st one. I'm actually kinda curious why. Unless he's no longer with is. But still he should be recognized as having the first and best electric jet pack suit. Kinda sad....lol
I'm sure its a typo but you ment electric suit not elected...😄 I didnt know he was from Kentucky but you are correct about him being the first. Looks like he isn't going to get the props he deserves for some reason. These guys may take the spot. Unfortunate because its slower then the dude from KY.

Insane! Thanks for sharing, good piece.
fantastic - I was wondering if anyone would ever improve on the wingsuit design, and I'm glad to see it happening. good choice to improve the handling and making it lighter BEFORE making it more powerful. get the most out of the current design before making it faster.
That frame of thought is absolutely the most reasonable ! Safety first !
I wonder if it gets made with a shark fin on the back as well as wing tips on top of the wrists would turn you into an airplane
You forgot to mention that this is the worlds most deadly sport, but still cool
I don’t doubt your statistic, but by what measure? Total deaths or percentage of deaths? If it’s the latter, it could mean if there are 5 deaths a year out of 100 wingsuit flyers then that’s a 5% mortality rate. Versus skydivers where that might be 10 deaths out of 5000, giving a .2% rate.
@@jsonlee01 that’s not the statistic tho for that just so everyone knows, that’s just him asking about the statistic
Vague statement lol.
Idk, maybe so. But don’t count out unlimited power boat racing or free solo rock climbing. I think I’ll stick to couch surfing.
And forgot the most important. This was achieved in 2020. Old news...
Thats crazy. He flying like a real life superrman.
One time when I was a kid at middle school we had this medium size hill that was pretty steep on the playground. And it was covered in grass. It was really really windy one day and I was pretty small and young and I stretched out my coat and used it like they were a makeshift wing suit without even realizing it. and I didn’t fly or anything like that but I had air resistance as I was falling and it made me kind of glide down the hill. It was a lot of fun and I imagine this is a ton of fun.
That is really incredible. Those speeds are crazy 180...wow! I fly hang gliders and that speed range is 15-35 mph most days but any type of flying with just you out in the breeze is pretty incredible.
if you pop a couple edf fans like this on you could speed that up a bit.. definitely not without increased risk though.
What mph is? any old fashioned unit? Metres needed.
@@josefgrombir4796 186 mph is right at 300 kilometers an hour.
I wonder about using actual proper turbofans with jet fuel. Power output will be much superior and will get you a longer flight time.
What are you flying? A Moyes Lightspeed can reach 65 to 75 mph.
Awesome. I would have loved to do this when I was younger. Wow way to go Peter.
Amazing and terrifying at the same time
Love the powered wing suit. Well done to Andy on the design and implementation of it.
Impressive technology, would love to see it developed to become more efficient and to be able to provide power for longer than 5 minutes. It is intriguing to see the different designs and concepts people come up with for powered flight.
inb4 everyone flying on jetpacks
Well you obviously have never been in a wing suit before because after 5 minutes contorting your body like that with those g-forces you're pretty exhausted so I'm not sure what anybody would need longer than 5 minutes for but you should get out there and get off of KZhead and go do it you probably like it then you can talk about getting one of those jetpacks and maybe you could be the person that gets it longer than 5 minutes
The weight of the batteries is the real issue. For the past 12 years, I've been flying and testing RC airplanes using the same system he is using. The one limitation has been the weight of 12 cell LiPo batteries. But in the last 7 years battery technology has improved. The size of his fan units are similar to the 120mm fan units I fly with.
Ditch the power pack parachute there's room more for another minute of battery space.doing 180 by the skin of your....LOL
Imagine military with integrated technologies in their gear, instead durable pants and long sleeve, they get a wingsuit attachment with propeller to their lightweight exo-skeleton suit.
Amazing!!!! I loved it when he turned it on, the other regular wingsuiters were just left to the dust and kept on going downards, and he went on a crazy climb!! It seems to me a more rigid wingsuit could improve flight combined with the electric engine.

I gotta say, I think this video underplayed this achievement. Since davinci, and likely before, people have dreamed of flying, and this is the closest to unaided flying we've ever gotten, and likely ever will. props to your props, mate.
Falling and gliding isn't really flying.
@@amanryan6803 "It's falling with style" xD to be fair, this is propelled flying as an airplane would, without the airplane, however short it lasts.
Until atigravity packs get disclosed of course.
We could also create mechanically-assisted wings that allow us to actually use our arms to fly, with out current biological set up this is clearly impossible but we have mechanical lifting exoskeletons that could be modified for such a purpose. You should have at least mentioned the Jet Wingpack and its creator Yves Rossy out of respect. Yes this is the first electric powered wingsuite but not the first time someone have done this sort of thing.
exactly, the title and general tone of the video are a bit misleading. At the very least they should follow up with a video on Yves, and maybe even do a compare and contrast and even maybe sponsor a "Ford vs Ferrari" type analysis.
Yes, and there are multiple versions of powered personal flight devices already in use, wingsuits and otherwise, using different propulsion technology. Electrically propelled parachutes / paramotors have been around for several years, and they can certainly climb above their release altitude just like other powered wingsuits can. The piece is quite misleading in those respects.
I saw Yves Rossy flying in France 3 years ago, great experience.
Aviators and those aspiring to become same know the difference, the jet pack was an entirely different aircraft, wingsuit is the ultimate expression of human flight.
@@flightographist Not with electric fan packs and battery packs attached. That puts the form factor on the same spectrum. A wingsuit is basically just adding webbing, like that of a flying squirrel.
He's on the right track. More power not only provides more fun but increases the margin of error and flexibility in flight options. Great idea.
I think we will see more of this. I had an idea of using a bike for momentum and then popping out some sort of back mounted glider while you quickly fold the bike up.. There are folding wheels out there which would probably be the biggest hurdle. A back mounted glider that could quickly open and shut would be another. Then how to fold the mid jump. Honestly though....freaking cool. If people can't do that now, they soon will be. Or found something better.
Ya I'm sure that would fold up very efficiently.

If you can mount a vector thrust pipe at the feet exit, folding at knees, instead of the chest thrusting drag over legs, one can freely navigate, doing scissors, loops, even rotation by hip, we tried that with a low fuel level flare booster, so electric would be dynamic, longer, perhaps much safer.

Serious military application for special forces jumping from safe zones into operational areas. Also if the battery capability could be extended, it would be even more incredible than it already is. Great work!
Only thing is, it would be a pricey program due to its weight. Soldiers can’t carry one of these home, unless it somehow broke down into pieces. They’d likely have to scuttle a dozen or so every time they deployed a team with it.
*laughs in us military budget*
Great application if you jump from the sky in your shorts and t shirt without personal kit and weapon
@Ready For Anything I'm thinking more spec ops small team infil light gear QRF missions or recon type stuff, not so much for full scale drops. If you think how much dropping bombs cost per bomb, a few disposable jet suits is a drop in the ocean
The military and the Military Industrial and Intelligence Complex would be way ahead of this. They would of known he was working and developing it from the start, and there wasn't any mention of the military contacting him which just re-enforces that its obsolete to them.
Absolutely fantastic!

what a great video ! I love the whole engineering behind it and the final results are excellent !
Just imagine how this tech will just get better and better, as battery technology continues to improve ...
5 minutes of battery is already pretty impressive. Think about it, you're not keeping this thing running for the whole 5 minutes. Instead, you're only using it every now and then to adjust and when you want to go higher. The use time to do that is far less, so your potential flight time ends up being much more than 5 minutes total.
battery tech is not going to improve as much or as fast as you think. the more energy dense, the more unstable it becomes. just like Musk's vaporware claims about a battery 2x as powerful by doubling the size only.
It's amazing this is a living dream thank you
That was pretty cool
