Very good game

james, if youre watching, you were an awesome player and you very much deserve that 2 million dollars. Emma was a good player though, and nothing lasts forever.
The number of people in this comment section who can't appreciate James's calculated risk is astounding.
Correct.
Exactly, protect second and hope he misses. She didn’t. Good for her
Exactly. He's a professional sports better, which may seem like a fun, leisurely activity and potentially lucrative, but I can assure you (them) it's not. Very few succeed at sports better (as a living). This man knows calculation, risk management, odds, etc. and was hedging his bet.
Raise your hand if you don’t like Emma
His wager was absolute perfection. Exactly what he had to do in that scenario. People who think he gave up are so stupid it’s unbelievable. By wagering $1,399 he locks out the third place guy if he misses. He needs Emma to miss regardless, so why let the third place guy back in?
James did NOT lose on purpose. Everyone will be asking why James bet so little, but it was actually genius. James knew that Emma was going to bet enough money where if he had bet everything, she would still beat him by a dollar. The highest James could’ve earned, if he had bet his entire total, was $46,800, and she won with $46,801. That’s why James bet just enough where if Emma was wrong, and lost that money, AND he was wrong, he would still have beaten the middle contestant by $1. Even if Jay had bet everything and was correct, the most he could’ve won was $22,000. If James was wrong, he would’ve won $22,001.
Thank you for explaining this for everyone, I cannot listen to another person say he threw the game by betting so little... It was a smart bet by him.
Woah you copied the exact comment from reddit word for word. Nice.
He's a pro gambler, obviously he's going to wager correctly....ppl are dumb as f.
I don’t think he wanted to beat Ken Jenning’s record and wanted to go back to his house and kids. He knew it was his last day so he gave Alex a “Get Well Soon” card.
exactly. people just don’t understand wagering strategy’s
And James immediately congratulated her. Class act
Nah it seemed like he was overcompensating a bit.
@@47imagine he overcompensates alot He's incredibly insecure. Great champ and a beautiful mind nonetheless
He totally lost on purpose. He said the first and last name and only wagered that much? Didn’t want to do it anymore.
@@nitrofreak1992 - He wanted to win. He wagered a small amount because he plays by the odds. James knew that Emma would want to protect her lead by betting the maximum she could to ensure a win if he also got the answer right. The best that he could hope was that Emma would miss the final question. If she did, the he wanted to bet the smallest amount it would take to overcome her score.
ChristophProbst That makes sense. I was wondering why he wagered so low. I still feel he should’ve bet it all, she was ahead and was on a roll. I was hoping he would set a record. Well, we will see him at Tournament of Champions. Can’t wait to see him vs Austin Rogers!
"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life" - Jean-Luc Picard
True dat. I'm kind of glad I grew up in an era when they didn't hand out participation trophies or sugarcoat the fact you were going to lose a lot during the course of your life, no matter how much you tried not to. It may have sucked to hear at the time, but it was an incredibly valuable life-lesson to learn. It ranks right up there with Kirk saying "damn it Bones, you're a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with the wave of a magic wand. They're the things we carry with us; the things that make us who we are. I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain," for profound life-lessons summed up in a single quote.
And just like that Jeopardy's viewer number plummeted back to normal levels
Lol. That's what I told my dad. Ratings are gonna go way down now
BIG facts
Jeopardy has always had very high ratings. This definitely pushed it to #1 but I'm pretty sure they've been number 2 or 3 for a very long time.
I think a lot of people will continue watching to see how Emma does.
Henry Black naw they werent even in top 10 overall recently until james started winning a lot
Seemed like Alex was touched and quite emotional to have been saying goodbye to what ultimately was his final megachampion. Almost like he knew. Missed him today when Matt had his final game.
Sounds more like he was sick...which we know he was.
It was not the final megachampion during Trebek's run as host. Jason Z. won 19 games spanning from the end of the season to the start of the next! I call that a megachamp!!
The bet at the end makes perfect sense. So basically he knew if he bet everything and she did- if they both got it right- he was gonna lose anyway. But he knew if he was wrong, and she was wrong; she would lose cause of a large bet. His $1399 was to counteract if they guy in third place got it right in that scenario and would end up w 22,000 (cause he would still have 22001). Really great strategy
@@christophercarrigg3775 Even if he bet everything it wouldn’t have mattered. The highest James could have won this game is $46,800 if he bet everything he had, and Emma bet just enough where James can’t catch her if she’s correct, which she was. She finished with $46,801.
He played it the only way that made sense...
It's a shame you could tell Alex really liked him. He was hoping he was going to beat Ken's record too!
Possible! I think part of him was annoyed how James wasn't an orthodox player, i.e. going bottom top instead of top bottom, but he didn't grate on his nerves like Buzzy or Austin, that's for damn sure lol.

Betting $1300 gave him the highest chance of winning, because he would still win if if the middle guy gets it wrong, James gets it wrong, james gets it right, or they both get it wrong. If James responded incorrectly, he would have had $22,001.
Exactly...and if the guy in the middle won and bet everything, he would have had 22,000. What people don't seem to get is that the math behind wagering when you are in SECOND place (or even last) is totally different from first place. Second place has to try and win, while protecting his flank from a third place victory.

I disagree. Why would a guy who has gotten 95% of his final jeopardy questions correct over the last month's worth of games employ a strategy based on the assumption that he's going to miss the answer??
James is a smarter better than I thought. I would've expected him to go all in on FJ. Usually, he does bet big on FJ (which is why he averaged about 76K a game). He realized his ONLY hope was for Emma to miss FJ (but she didn't) so he had to bet strategically.

I heard that he lost because he was a bit distracted from finding out that Alex Trebek had been diagnosed with cancer and that threw his game off a little. I believe this is the first episode they taped after Alex shared his diagnosis with the world.(Remember the episodes are taped weeks before being aired) If you'll notice, James is wearing a cancer ribbon pinned to his shirt and during the contestant interview part of the show, James gave Alex a get well card that his 4 year old daughter made for him(Alex).
You know, is the first episode thing can be confirmed, that might actually be true then
Finding out that the host of the show you’ve been on for while has advanced cancer can throw your game off a little and he wasn’t his usual game playing self. It is almost as if, for some strange reason, James wanted to lose. It was just crazy in every way! For one, with as little as he wagered, the leading contestant would've beat him even if she hadn't wagered anything!
She would have bet that amount anyway; why would she wager nothing when she is in the lead, and James would almost certainly get it right. James bet so small, because even if he bet everything and she got it right, she would win by $1. So, he bet just enough so that in case both he and Emma got it wrong, the middle guy won't win by betting it all.
Then we agree to disagree, @@sayantanguha707. As a general rule, I don't believe in complicating that which is simple. That's one thing. The other is that there are far more important matters in this present world far more essential to debate & to debate properly to arrive the exact conclusions, e.g. "Who exactly was Jesus of Nazareth?"; "Who am I & why was I born & do I need to be concerned or is it a fantasy that there is an existence of my inner self when my physical body dies & that there are only two options for permanent residence in the eternal & which one I'll be going to can only be determined when I'm yet physically alive?"; "When my loved one dies physically, where will my loved one's spirit spend eternity?" (assuming arrival at the correct answer of that "Yes, there is existence after physical death"! has occurred); "Do I need to be 'saved,' & if 'no,' why 'no' when countless others have arrived at the conclusion that the answer is 'yes,' & if the answer is 'yes,' what must I do to be saved?"; "Are there really sinister invisible spirits lurking around with the sole intention of destroying me in whatever way they can & what's my defense against them?"; "Is what we have as 'Bible' today really 'the Word of God' & can it be verified either way?"; etc. Thankfully I've already personally confronted these questions & thankfully, by Christ Jesus the Almighty's grace & aid, I knew my Source Book to delve into with all diligence & soberness & honesty & a determination to encounter & come away with the truth, the whole truth, & nothing but the truth would need be the Holy Bible (KJV) & so I did exactly that from in my youth & have the answers incorporated into my personal existence. I know that my current life isn't being lived merely for this temporal world that is, in any event, deteriorating to the point that it would eventually cease to exist as a life-sustaining habitation as we know it to be today, anyhow. Moreover, if it weren't for the providential hand of the Almighty, the exceedingly evil members of humanity would have already homicidally & suicidally wiped out this whole Earth & living things with devastating inventions primarily invented for the purpose of causing disaster! And, by the way, these are the things that are in my mind as I watch a show like Jeopardy! & I watch the genuinely spectacular & intriguing performances of James Holzhauer evening after evening or that of those like him & I think with a measure of sadness to varying degrees in each case of "For what shall it profit a person if the person were to gain the whole world and lose their own soul?" So, yeah, on this matter of whether or not James deliberately caused himself to be unseated last night (& I believe there is far more evidence than what occurred in the "Final Jeopardy" round to prove he indeed decided it was -- at least in his mind -- time for him to go), we'll just have to agree to disagree. I still maintain that he knew the burden was more on him to do what would be necessary to secure the win & to move on far more than it could ever have been even with &, ironically, because of her lead over him going into the final round. I believe it is common sense to conclude that he speculated that it would have been unlikely for her to have wagered everything when she was in the lead with only a few thousand dollars ahead of him & that all he therefore needed to do was to wager, say, $22,000 & he would have been far more likely to have prevented her win. Better yet, him knowing he was right (after all, it was apparently so familiar a topic & line of thought that even his competitors got it correct &, moreover, seeming to further prove he knew full well he knew the answer, he even included the first name, whereas the two competitors may not have even knew or recalled that much), he could have confidently wagered all his earnings for the evening & know fairly certainly that she wasn't going to wager all she had & he would therefore have won. So, again, & I guess I'll not need or try to defend my position any more than this & will only need point back to these remarks of mine if my position is yet called into question in the future by you or whoever else, James decided it was time for him to go & even if he himself comes out & honestly says why he conducted himself the way he did last night & what his thought process was throughout some people aren't going to be satisfied that that's all it or it at all. But really it's really up to him to honestly say what happened, if he chooses to. And the reality is that, especially true of us who aren't his haters, we are just incredibly disappointed that he didn't keep on going, at least until he had unseated the arrogant Jennings, but preferably also until it was seen how long he could genuinely go until someone unseated him while he was playing at his best & with full intention to win.
I ended up watching the whole of yesterday evening's episode of Jeopardy! at Jeopardy!'s YT channel & this following is what I had to conclude in a post over there, this following being the exact post over there: "9:52" -- What an irony that Emma began to overtake & be on well on the road to unseating James by her correctly answering a question in which the name "JAMES" was featured integrally! By getting the $7,000+ & then the subsequent "Daily Double" for which she wagered everything, she pretty much gained enough footing to have been the real threat to him that she was & eventually proved in the end to be. Even with him having overtaken her again for a brief while, she still maintained enough of a proximity to him to overtake him yet again when it was critical for her to have maintained the proximity as well as to overtake him before the final round. Having really watched it in its entirety now & not running back & forth to get other things done simultaneously, I have come to a different conclusion than I did elsewhere. Indeed I have now come to the conclusion that James definitely wasn't playing to lose, at least not at the start, but rather Emma got fortune & opportunities to stay close to his earnings & to overtake him (twice) & she did so fairly. I say James wasn't playing to lose from the start because in the "Final Jeopardy" round that play of his was either deliberately unwise because he was just tired of the fight & just figured it was time to go or it was simply unwise by a somehow terrible miscalculation of what he needed to do to ensure that he won & that thing he ought to have done other than what he did was to have wagered every single dollar in the confidence that Emma wasn't going to likely have the nerve to wager every single dollar of hers when she already had the lead but only by a few thousand dollars. Well, it was a thrill while it lasted. I doubt it's the last we've heard & seen of James Holzhauer.
I just watched a video at Grunge's YT channel regarding James & his final match up in which he loss to Emma & this is what I commented there: "9:18" -- Yeah, one thing I did forget in previous comments I made regarding James' loss to Emma is that the contestants wager for the final round of Jeopardy! BEFORE they get the question of that final round. And, yeah, I guess Emma wagered just enough at that time to ensure that no matter what James wagered she was going to prevail. She did well in that, therefore, but there was a cockiness about her that surely didn't win her many fans & she had a weakness of almost getting some questions correct but failing to do so by managing to misremember a portion, which is exactly what axed her the other day.
I admittedly see the sense of the "$1" thing of Emma's wager now, @@sayantanguha707, & I also just remembered that the wagers are posited even before the contestants know what the question is going to be. My apologies.
I saw him on a podcast yesterday and he said he's gotta lose before he gets paid. So there's that ...
That would be dumb as fuck if he did it on purpose.. He also loses a lot in future money and a possible documentary on him and whatever else.... Lets say he got to 4 or 5 million. There would have been so much buzz on him being a genius etc..... if he truly was just wanting to get out.. losing right before breaking the record would be the worst possible time
Thank you! About time we got rid of that bore. James made Watson look like Austin Rogers
He was annoying and greedy. So happy he lost!!
@@denny1329...me too. I don't begrudge him his winnings, but I prefer a classier champ.
@@denny1329 How the hell is he greedy

Love and miss ya alex! R.I.P
Wow, even if he wagered all she would of won if she wagered all. It was a close game but not as close as the one he had already with Adam on the 18th game of James Holzhauer.
He wanted no more to do with Jeopardy he's never ever bet such a small wager in Final Jeopardy
Even if James bet all his 23,400 he would have still lost by $ 😉. This new champ is the real modest one ❤
His bet was smart. Had Emma gotten it wrong he would've won, even if he got it wrong himself
A rigged game, hired a person who studied Jeopardy for her masters and leveled the playing field making it so that James had no advantage over the other contestants.
yep
His loss occurred 15 years and a day after Ken Jennings' 2004 debut. Julia Collins lost on June 2, 2014, Exactly 10 years after Ken debuted. Ironically, Ken, Julia, and James all had huge winning streaks on anniversary seasons (Ken in Season 20/21, Julia in Season 30, and James in Season 35)
HE BLEW IT! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO ITS OVER :(
People are wondering why james bet so little, but it doesn't matter. Even if he had bet it all, he still would have lost
Actually he gave himself a chance to win, because he made sure to stay ahead of the middle guy no matter what. So if Emma went wrong, he would've won
Wow it’s good to see so many smart people on the internet at one place lol.
How did she stay so stone faced?!?!
Because she's sophisticated.
