But I really appreciate the content. I absolutely love ants, and your care and consideration for these fascinating creatures is not something I've seen from many other ant channels. A lot of the other guys I've seen don't seem to genuinely care for their wellbeing as much as you seem to. Also I'd love an update video on the other ant colony.

  • Hey your Messor colony looks amazing! I've been ant-keeping for almost 4 years now, so here's a few things I wanna points out: -The mold on the cotton is normal. Cotton will always mold when wet and as long as it's not 100% covered in mold, or the mold doesn't have any sporangiophores (google it), then it's probably safe for the ants. The soil ants live in is full of mold so as long as the cotton is moist the ants should be fine. -The tube still has plenty of water left in it. The ants can live in a that tube until the water literally runs out 100% and the cotton dries. -That nest is big for them. Ants should preferably fill about 50-75% of a brand new nest depending on the species. In the wild they aren't used to having so much extra space so something they can deposit trash in the extra space which can mold if the nest is humid. I don't think you need to move them out or anything but be careful that they don't deposit trash inside the nest. I keep Messor barbarous and they're pretty clean ants (although they poop everywhere) so you'll probably be fine. Anyways, I'm so glad you're enjoying keeping ants :) Our hobby needs more big KZheadrs spreading the joy of ants!

    @MinigunL5@MinigunL53 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for the tips! I don't consider myself a big youtuber but I do enjoy making ant content 😁 for now the ants store their trash at the top of the nest so I can reach it. Lets hope it stays that way

      @HomemadeEcosystems@HomemadeEcosystems3 ай бұрын
  • Okay a few notes here. The mould that forms in the test tubes is usually fairly harmless. Though it's better not to have it, the health risks for the ants is very small. Unless you get big fluffy white and/or yellow moulds. I think moving them to the formicarium is a bit too soon and risks creating mould outbreaks there. Since the colony is so small they can't keep the entire space clean and might use corners of the formicarium as part of their bathroom/junk/graveyard area. You might not want to move too quickly, especially in the winter periods Messor sp. isn't the most active sp. as it is and their growth is naturally slower. My advise would be to grow the colony in a test tube or a small 1 tot max 2 room formicarium until they grow bigger (or disconnect the pre-shaped one at least so they can build the size they need in the sand). At least until they reach 50 to 80 workers. Also my like is for Bob, just so we're clear!

    @daves2hd@daves2hd3 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for the tips and concern! This is messor angularis so they don't have a winter/slower period. The colony is growing very fast the past few weeks so the tube would have become to small soon. So far I noticed that they collect their dirt in the top far right corner of the right nest so I can reach it. Lets hope they keep that spot 😁
