I took seven ant colonies and placed them into a single arena. The results of this ant introduction experiment was shocking! I didn't know what to do next. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

  • Im pretty sure that the first scout filled the arena with its scent. Thats usually a good idea if you want to bring foreign animals together - use neutral space for meeting the first time. Since ants are pretty much always marking their territory it would have been a good idea to let them all in the arena at the same time.

    @sleepingcity85@sleepingcity8510 ай бұрын
  • I have a theory as to why the other colonies are so shy. You introduced the first colony way before the others and the first had time to send out scouts too which likely filled the space with foreign smells and that is probably why the other colonies are being so very cautious.

I think the fact that the scout regurgitated food and was then let go is a good sign that neither colony is in a position to be hostile. Personally I'd like to see a mixing of queens since it's not put of the realm of possibility that sister queens would choose to stay together. • The other colonies probably smelled the pheromones laid down by the first colony and regarded it as 1s territory. It would've been better to start off with 2 or 3 exposed to the arena at the same time. Maybe the later colonies would feel emboldened to explore territory that already has multiple scents. Basically like the difference between private and public property.

  • The problem was that by giving colony #1 so much advance time, their scent from the vial filled the arena, which then made all the other colonies hesitant to enter, thinking it was the territory of colony #1. It would be better to release all colonies as close to the same time as possible so they all have a shot at entering the area before the arena fills with the scent of any particular colony. Edit: Thanks for the likes and the replies! Appreciate the humor too. In other words, the other colonies are probably detecting 'outside' as already the territory of colony 1. I am fascinated how this one has played out after these few days. If there haves been no changes, may I suggest removing colony 1 (leave others as is - thus rest having 'equal' starting point)?

  • Two hypothesis. First is that the opening of colony one was different than the rest. Second hypothesis is that colony one's scent already claimed the common area so the other colonies didn't want to enter another colonies area. A better experiment would have been to connect all the colonies at the same time rather than allowing the first colony to claim the central area beforehand.

    @PeterSedesse@PeterSedesse2 жыл бұрын
    • Literally all I could think as well. Colony 1 definitely had the advantage by being first.

      @revirdkcalb@revirdkcalb2 жыл бұрын
    • To prove that the scent was the cause we could repeat the experiment letting the first colony to get out before others (as he did here) and see if the other colonies get out at some point (would be interesting also to understand when they get out and if they do it all at the same time). Then do another experiment synchronizing the opening and compare the results. I don't think the difference in holes matters, all colonies except the fist acted the same way and they had different openings. Do you know if he continued with the experiment?

      @simonepozzoli@simonepozzoli2 жыл бұрын
    • Yep as soon as the holes were connected to the 2nd-7th colony the first thing they would notice is a foreign ant’s scent. If you release all of them at once I suspect no ant would reach the jelly. Some might take a few steps outside the hole right away but then smell 6 different scents and retreat

  • How fascinating was the ending bit??!! I mean, incredible. We rarely see colonies interact in a great quality video, but when we do, its hundreds of ants everywhere. There is no way for us to trully understand what if going on and the voiceover is usually more of a storytelling ,rather than a real description of event. But here?? Here you can see its not chaos at all, there is intent and reason for everything that happens, the ants dont really stand around waiting or being stupid, they react instantly and with purpose. The grab, the steal of the nectar, the escape, the run aways, the emergency quick cleaning... everything. Trully amazing and, while I had huge appreciation for ants and all other animals for that matter - this is just another piece of the puzzle that makes me understand and appreciate them even more. Thank you! Amazing work!

  • Colony 1 had a very defined opening but the other colonies had their entrances partially covered by the cotton, which might had influenced them into staying inside. Another factor is that when #1 was opened, there were no traces of pheromones in the environment. By the time the other colonies were opened, #1 had already laid several pheromone paths and the other ants did smell that when exploring the possibility of venturing out, so they stayed inside as a natural safety. Really interesting insight into the lives of ants, thanks for sharing!

We'll never know for sure why they didn't come out at first lol

  • I have to believe that they didn't kill the interloper because they knew that she wasn't a threat. If they had wanted her dead, she would have been killed right off the bat. They wanted information, primarily where she got that full gastor from. Keep them together! This is going to be VERY educational! Besides, letting all but one go would leave me wondering how they turned out. This is a new epic story that HAS to be told!

    @tlee656@tlee6562 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, this is probably the start of co existence since like you said, the interloper would of been killed if the other colony wanted her dead and was seen as a threat, so yeah I agree.

    @0lmec@0lmec2 жыл бұрын
    • It’s not actually cruel tho look at ants in the wild, some shove worker ants into the entrances of the colony to block invading ants weaver ants routinely send thousands of workers to their deaths, their primary fighting strategy is ripping their limbs off and letting them die from lose of bodily fluids ants are cruel this is tame compared to the wild

      @1Fatherlesschild@1Fatherlesschild2 жыл бұрын
    • @@1Fatherlesschild but the thing is that would you let lions hunt live pray at a zoo of course not because that’s cruel and the animals have no way to escape forcing your ants to fight each other and not allowing them to build up their colonies is why mixing ants is considered cruel

      @hannothestupid2064@hannothestupid20642 жыл бұрын
    • @@hannothestupid2064 many places still do though... and sometimes it's just good for your animal... in nature mothers will usually bring injured prey to their babies to teach them to hunt... it's also why young animals will playfight with eachother so much... People like farmers with cats for pests and dogs for herding and predators... or hunters that use dogs would probably benefit most from using live bait to train their animals
